The objective of the Master in Interior Design for Luxury Living is transmitting the evolution and expectations of Italian design excellence, from the house to the areas of hospitality and culture. The Italian living landscape is analysed in its narrative ability, grafting into memory the projection of a future of crafted interior dimensions, able to integrate the complexity of the environment with the needs of the client.

The pathway of study focuses on on the concept of Common Luxury Good in evolution, able to create new living environments, hospitality and entertainment areas, where the Italian style, even in comparison with other cultures, is enriched with new codes and languages without losing their identity.

The Master's programme is structured as an itinerary of research, with design experiences providing the tools to understand how to work and meditate on the meaning of their own work. To achieve these results, participants are encouraged to apply the operative knowledge acquired with an autonomous capacity to critically process and explore individual poetics with the elaboration of a personal expressive language.

The Course introduces participants to the reception and interpretation of the needs of the client. They learn to develop the ability of design direction, in order to integrate project choices that affect a space or a service in a broader vision of the planning and realization processes.

The Goal is focusing on a strategic plan including all tangible and intangible aspects (function, communication, service, identity, relationships) that perfectly meet customers’ expectations and market needs.

The theoretical lessons integrate aesthetics, anthropology, living culture, the history of interior design and design furniture.

There will be seminars of Interior Design on several themes including housing, retail, hospitality (hotels, resorts, spa) catering (bars, restaurants) for special luxury spaces (yachts, cellars, exhibition areas).

Through the project communication, participants acquire the tools for visual communication and marketing strategies, and learn about contracts and schedules for cost control.

The Master culminates with a Final Project realized on a chosen topic among seminars and presented in a personal portfolio, aimed at checking the skills acquired.

Domus Academy has always had a wide and multidisciplinary approach to design research and teaching, which makes it possible to have a wide vision on design. The Master in Interior and Living Design intends to focus on the need to explore all aspects that concern design: from the most technical to the most intuitive ones, and to combine them in order to contemplate the various nuances of meaning in the words to live, to dwell, to use.

Milan offers a wide range of historical and contemporary stimulating examples; its long tradition in experimenting and finding practical solutions to the problems of living and dwelling makes it unique.

AAL is one of the major emerging technology markets of the moment, offering the potential to enable and empower citizens in their daily lives using state-of-the-art technologies. Known as 'assistive technologies' in some areas, AAL facilitates everyday activities for people who require care and support, augmenting their quality of life and assisting their independence.

Thanks to advances in medicine and improved knowledge of the links between lifestyle and health, a large proportion of the world is living longer. Diseases like Alzheimer's naturally increase proportionally with life expectancy and this has huge implications for those affected, their family, the healthcare sector and society in general. Those using wheelchairs or with conditions such as autism and Down's syndrome can also benefit from AAL, as these novel technologies can be used to support independence inside and outside the home, when travelling or at work – stimulating socialisation and promoting more positive lifestyles.

Perhaps the most compelling case for AAL is the use of smart homes to support independent living for people of older age, but many other applications exist or are in development. Billions of euros have been invested in the technologies through the European Union's Framework Programmes since 2007, such as the three-year Poseidon project currently supported by Middlesex University. The course is inter-disciplinary, exploring different approaches to enhancing life engagement for people who have dementia and their carers. The programme and pathways have been designed to respond and contribute to the modernisation of mental health care delivery and service design.

Service development and evidence-based guidelines continuously highlight the need for multidisciplinary, multi-agency dementia care services that are accessible, flexible, inclusive and enabling. Importantly, such services and care must be driven by the needs of clients and their carers. It is vital, therefore, that such services are developed and delivered by staff appropriately prepared with relevant expertise, knowledge and skills.

This part-time, multi-disciplinary, practice-focused educational programme aims to equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to offer high standard, evidence-based interventions that promote the well-being, personhood and empowerment of people living with dementia and their significant others and to act as agents of change contributing to research, service development and leadership in this area of practice.

The programme is delivered by internationally and nationally renowned, published experts in the field, experienced dementia care practitioners, people who are living with dementia and former students, many of whom now operate at senior levels within dementia care services.

The programme involves attendance at the University for one day per week during term-time. Students are required to identify a suitable practice supervisor/mentor to oversee any clinical and/or practice work required for the programme and pathway.

Aims

This programme aims to equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to offer high standard, evidence-based interventions that promote the well-being empowerment and personhood of people living with dementia and their families/important others and to act as agents of change, contributing to service development, innovation and leadership in this area of practice.

Teaching and learning

Students participate in a range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, small-group work, student-led seminars, group-work, problem-based learning scenarios and online learning.

Students will undertake independent study in order to further develop and consolidate their learning. The dementia pathway aims to involve people with dementia and their families in the delivery of sessions where possible.

Coursework and assessment

A variety of assessments are used within each course unit and across the programme as a whole. All assessments require students to integrate knowledge and understanding and make application to their own area of practice relevant to the outcomes of each unit and the focus of each pathway.

Assessment methods may include essays, case studies, assessed seminar presentations and literature reviews.

The dissertation for the MSc requires students to undertake an extended written piece of work (12,000 - 15,000 words) which focuses on a specific aspect of Mental Health Practice in the form of an extended Literature Based Review/proposal for practice development.

On completion of the taught units of the programme (PGDip), successful students who meet progression requirements are able to continue onto their research dissertation for the MSc. This Comparative Literature MA is based in both Canterbury and Paris to offer the study of literature beyond national and linguistic borders, enabling you to spend one term in each location.

After a term at our Canterbury campus, you move to Kent’s Paris centre to study modules with a specific focus on this city, allowing you to benefit from the experience of living and studying in another European culture. All classes in Paris are taught in English. The programme can also be studied at Canterbury only.

Comparative Literature involves the study of literature from two or more national and linguistic traditions, allowing students to gain an intercultural and transnational understanding of diverse cultural and literary practices. The MA programme explores three main areas: themes, genres, movements and major literary figures; the interactions and exchanges between national literary traditions; and the theory and practice of comparative literature. These complementary strands encourage comparative analysis in a variety of contexts, ranging from the study of national literatures to the exploration of different genres, periods, media and literary theory.

The programme is offered by the Department of Comparative Literature and benefits from staff expertise in a range of areas, including European modernism, postmodernism, postcolonial literature, literature and medicine, literature and sexuality, literature and psychoanalysis and literature and the visual arts. Our programme also draws on additional expertise in the School of European Culture and Languages particularly from colleagues in the departments of French, German, Hispanic Studies and Italian, as well as from colleagues in the School of English.

You begin by studying a choice of four modules across the Autumn and Spring terms, before writing a 12,000-word dissertation over the summer, supervised by an expert in the department.

This programme is for those wanting to pursue detailed literary and cultural studies and also wishing to benefit from the experience of living and studying overseas.

This programme enables you to study in Canterbury in the autumn term and in Paris in the spring term. The autumn term modules are the same as those for the standard MA in Comparative Literature. The spring term modules are taught by staff from the University of Kent and occasional guest lecturers, ensuring consistent academic standards and assessment throughout the year. These modules are designed to be specifically relevant to the experience of living and studying in Paris. You are encouraged to make full use of Paris’ cultural resources and to integrate these into your studies. The MA in French and Comparative Literature offers an excellent environment for the postgraduate study of literature beyond national and linguistic borders with a particular focus on French culture, with the complementary experience of living in Paris for a term.

Comparative Literature at Kent involves the study of literature from two or more European cultures, to gain an intercultural and transnational understanding of cultural practice. The programme aims to:

•provide the opportunity to obtain a postgraduate qualification (MA) in one year, and to allow, if required, a smooth transition to doctoral studies

Autism is a spectrum of lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions that presents various challenges for those people living with Autism and the services in place to provide care, education, training and support. There is an emphasis on the need to increase general awareness and specialist training for all professionals involved in the delivery of autism related services. However, it has been recognised that Autism and its related conditions are prevalent globally, and this programme explores the international context to highlight best practice initiatives.

The Master's in Autism and Related Conditions, which is also available at Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate level as well as on a part time basis, is a unique training and development programme leading to a postgraduate qualification for those professionals who are seeking to advance and specialise their knowledge and practice in Autism.

Key Features of the Autism and Related Conditions Programme

In response to the Autism Act (2009), the UK government produced statutory guidance for health, social care and educational organisations, which highlighted the strategic need for staff training at all levels, service planning and the creation of local leadership. Part of this guidance places an emphasis on the need to increase general awareness and specialist training for all professionals involved in the delivery of autism related services.

The Autism and Related Conditions programme is modular and structured in three levels, each building on the next. You can elect to take either the full Master's programme or the Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma, depending on need and circumstances. The programme is designed to allow you to complete either as full time or part time study. For part-time students, each of the three components are scheduled to take a year each to complete.

Who should take this course?

Any health care professionals (medical, nursing and allied health), educators (primary, secondary, FE and HE), social care professionals and psychologists who wish to develop their understanding, skills and leadership in Autism.

Attendance Pattern

Students are required to attend the University for 1 week (5 consecutive days) for each module in Part One (Taught Element). Attendance during Part Two (Dissertation or Portfolio) is negotiated with the supervisor, with a minimum of 4 supervisory meetings. You are also encourage to attend the Postgraduate Taught Induction Event during the induction week and any programme associated seminars.

Meet our Alumni

Elizabeth Clatworthy was the first person to graduate from the MSc in Autism and Related Conditions course in 2014. She had both a personal and professional reason to be the first person to gain a Master’s degree in a new course that specialises in the study of autism, as she fosters an eight year old boy who has the condition. Elizabeth said: ‘However a five year old boy came to me to be fostered, which resulted in him being placed with me full time. He was non-verbal and had behavioural issues, but now he talks, has learned to manage his own behaviour and now I feel that there is no limit to what he can achieve. This experience led me to apply for my Master’s degree and I have found that my learning has helped me understand more about my foster child, and equally my foster child has helped me gain greater insight into my studies.”

Rhys Jenkins, now aged 24, was diagnosed with Autism when he was 16 years old. He had successfully completed a Law Degree at Cardiff University prior to coming to Swansea University to complete the MSc in Autism and Related Conditions course.

Why study MSc Environmental Health at Middlesex?

We are the largest and foremost provider of environmental health education in the UK. Our close links with industry allow us to offer a course which is highly work-focused, with a strong emphasis on practical laboratory work and real-life case studies. Our excellent facilities include a microbiology laboratory and pestology materials.

Many of our teaching staff are chartered environmental health practitioners, and they have a wide range of specialisms and experience. Our inspiring principal lecturer Alan Page is a former principal environmental health officer at several London councils, while programme leader Michael Hewitt was a senior environmental health officer at British Airways. Collections and Visitor Management
Heritage professions involve working with a finite resource which must be managed to ensure its long-term survival. This module attempts to familiarise you with a range of heritage and public history settings and address key concepts such as stewardship and sustainability. The module will be delivered by staff from Dudley Archives service and Black Country Living Museum at these two locations, ensuring students gain the best possible experience

Public History Placement Project
You will be placed in a group in your chosen heritage sector and tasked to complete a real project (such as cataloguing an archival acquisition, putting on a museum display, organising an educational workshop or carrying out a review of visitor experience) which will last for at least 6 months of the course

Assessment

Assessment will be through a series of theoretical and practical tasks designed in collaboration with professionals working in the heritage sector. There will be no exam element to this course.

Attendance

The course will run on one afternoon a week over 9 months, with 4 to 5 Saturday sessions. The first module and the Saturday sessions will be taught at Newman University and all other sessions will take place at Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Archives.

Masters in Environmental Science and Policy

A flexible Master’s degree designed to develop a rigorous understanding of transformational responses to climate change. Taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), which pioneered sustainability practice and theory in the UK, this is the first MSc course to properly integrate and the social, political, economic and practical aspects of living with environmental change.

This Master’s degree tackles these themes through a combination of academic study, discussion and hands-on practical work. We give our MSc students the knowledge, skills and experience needed to develop a career in the environmental sector and make an impact. Hands-on learning

At CAT, hands-on learning takes place side by side with academic study. Residential on-site block learning weeks are taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), an inspiring learning environment. Nestled in a disused slate quarry on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, CAT is a living laboratory for practical, sustainable solutions. It contains some of the most innovative and renowned environmentally conscious buildings in the country, as well as one of the most diverse range of installed renewable technologies, on site water and sewage treatment, sustainably managed woodland and acres of organic gardens.

Flexibility

It is a flexible degree, taught in blocks taken either with an intensive residential stay of five or six nights at the centre, or by distance learning. MSc students are free to choose between these teaching modes for every module. There is a choice of modules, taken over one year or two – meaning the degree can be part time. It is a masters degree designed to give you the best possible experience whilst also meshing neatly with the pressures of modern professional and family life.

Immersive learning environment

Optional residential module weeks include lectures, seminars, group work and practicals. Applied work tends to dominate later in the week once we have laid the theoretical groundwork. These module weeks provide a truly immersive environment to escape daily life and apply yourself to new learning. Many eminent experts give guest lectures or hold seminars during these modules, as it is a course which seeks to draw on the expertise and learning of the whole environmental sector.
