Overview

Domus Academy has always had a wide and multidisciplinary approach to design research and teaching, which makes it possible to have a wide vision on design. The Master in Interior and Living Design intends to focus on the need to explore all aspects that concern design: from the most technical to the most intuitive ones, and to combine them in order to contemplate the various nuances of meaning in the words to live, to dwell, to use.

Milan offers a wide range of historical and contemporary stimulating examples; its long tradition in experimenting and finding practical solutions to the problems of living and dwelling makes it unique.

In this perspective, the department has created a training project of excellence able to reflect on the changes and transformations of the built space, promoting a permanent research activity for design models and solutions that are appropriate and innovative.

The program includes an internship in a company working in the disciplinary field.

This postgraduate research degree provides the opportunity for students who wish to undertake an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) research project on any one of a wide range of interdisciplinary disciplines, under the supervision of our team of experts.

AAL is one of the major emerging technology markets of the moment, offering the potential to enable and empower citizens in their daily lives using state-of-the-art technologies. Known as 'assistive technologies' in some areas, AAL facilitates everyday activities for people who require care and support, augmenting their quality of life and assisting their independence.

Thanks to advances in medicine and improved knowledge of the links between lifestyle and health, a large proportion of the world is living longer. Diseases like Alzheimer's naturally increase proportionally with life expectancy and this has huge implications for those affected, their family, the healthcare sector and society in general. Those using wheelchairs or with conditions such as autism and Down's syndrome can also benefit from AAL, as these novel technologies can be used to support independence inside and outside the home, when travelling or at work – stimulating socialisation and promoting more positive lifestyles.

Perhaps the most compelling case for AAL is the use of smart homes to support independent living for people of older age, but many other applications exist or are in development. Billions of euros have been invested in the technologies through the European Union's Framework Programmes since 2007, such as the three-year Poseidon project currently supported by Middlesex University. These projects are bringing a proliferation of new systems, requiring a combination of new equipment, software, interfaces, and services.

Possible Projects:
The architecture of a space as an enabler for AAL
Inclusive design
Context-aware reasoning for intelligent environments
Software engineering of AAL systems
Adaptive AAL systems
System personalisation
Measuring effectiveness of AAL systems
Companion robots
Reliable AAL services
Security issues
Ethics in AAL systems,
New areas of application for AAL systems (offices, shopping, leisure, education, etc.)

Your programme of study

If you are fascinated by protecting the environment across all areas that impact pollution control and health of all living things in sea/water, earth/soil and air this programme will be of real interest to you. You understand how to regulate and control harmful pollutant effects on all life on this planet and you learn how to ensure the polluter pays. You could decide to work for an energy company or any industry within its environmental regulation and protection area.

There is a balance of growth and just how harmful that growth can be without regulation and control. You could be the regulator and work in central government or local government or you could be the gatekeeper to pollution control to ensure it complies with regulation for your company. You could also work for NGOs and activist organisations such as Client Earth to clean up industries that appear to be affecting our potential future life on earth or consultants assisting individuals and groups to seek environmental justice.

The programme is ideally situated in the heart of the energy industry in Aberdeen City where regulators and energy providers work alongside. For the wide ranging environmental aspect you also benefit from highly protected environments nearby such as National Parks and restrictions on planning and development specifically to protect environment. In every day life you can be assured that there will be a constant demand for your skills as a consultant to work with business, groups and individuals to protect environment with the 'Polluter Pays' principle in terms of protecting basic rights relating to environment. There are many instances where our environment needs protecting in our daily lives from poor planning decisions to poorly regulated polluters.

At Aberdeen you get a full range of experts in energy law, drawing from historical and close links with the energy industry in the city and environmental law experts covering renewables, corporate environmental responsibility, and regulation. The programme can lead to teaching and further research or you can be involved in bringing the past alive and re-inventing traditions in new events for the future. Examples of traditions which contribute significantly to their economies are Uphelia on Shetland and The Fireballs ceremony in Stonehaven which is also replicated in towns in Northern England such as the Tar Barrels ceremony at Allendale. You can take this knowledge into niche areas of interest to you, extend it into local festivals and raise awareness of lost areas of culture or those which are at risk of being lost. You can either research or teach or use this knowledge to enrich tourism and local community experiences.

Your programme of study

Are you passionate about films and all things visual or on screen? Do you want to work in the arts or do you want to find a way to do this?  This programme gives you cultural contexts across a range of different genres and history of film to understand why films depicted what they did and how this contributed to the world around us and the way we live. It is well known that film has shaped other disciplines like fashion, the way we think, cultural identity, how we are able to express ourselves or understand something better we previously didn't know about. It is an opportunity to put the record straight on history and get to the root cause and effect of different periods in history through characters. Film is also about getting to the truth in documentary films.  Film also follows many other arts disciplines in interpreting them and bringing them to our attention in a way that theatre and performance cannot in terms of scale and reality. Much of what has been successful on the West End Stage, Opera, ballet, the life of a famous painter or other creative is often successfully depicted in film due to its ability to portray several art forms together successfully.

Film isn't the only art form to transform our lives but it probably reaches more people than any other art form around the world. It probably has more of a profound influence in people's lives around the world to change the course of their life in work, interests, style, imitation and more. Different ages of photography have been monumental in transforming our perceptions and getting us closer to reality such as old film and photography of the 19th century, war in the world and celebrities being the first fashion icons of the 50s, without the need for script.

You study and analyse film across the recent past and you look at animation and digital from the days of the Walt Disney team making up each frame to its evolution into digital animation and speed production. You also look at how changing tastes and cultural styles have changed the way in which we view film and by what method, plus you look at living overseas in the context of your own cultural identity.  From this you gain useful skills and knowledge to critique contemporary film, curate exhibitions work in museums, become and expert in a specific theme or age of film.
