STUDENT´S TESTIMONIAL

"Joining Católica's Masters in Economics has been a challenging and extraordinary experience. The professors' excellence and their close relationship with students along with the opportunity to attend interesting conferences with the best economists (e.g. Sérgio Rebelo and Joseph Stiglitz) created an amazing academic environment for my development as an economist. In addition, Católica also offered me the opportunity to grow as a person through its exchange program. Looking back, I know I made the best choice."

The Masters Programme aims to develop students’ mathematical and computational skills, and also those in financial modelling.
The curriculum includes such subjects as probability theory, stochastic calculus, numerical methods, optimisation and control theory, stochastic finance, interest rate models and credit risk. It thus provides a thorough training in modern mathematical finance. In studying for our Masters, students are put in contact with the most important technical and quantitative topics of finance, both theoretical and applied, which range from mathematical background to the latest trends in the financial sector. Increasingly, the financial sector demands a Masters degree in Mathematical Finance from a prestigious university as a prerequisite for recruitment. Our students have often been recruited by prominente companies whilst still preparing their Masters’ thesis, at both a national and na international level. Amongst others, such companies include: EY, Mercer, KPMG, Deloitte, CGD, the Bank of Portugal, BNP Paribas, BPI, Banque Européenne d’Investissement (EIB), Banque Centrale Européenne, Lloyds Bank, and Santander bank. ISEG - Lisbon School of Economics and Management, of ULisboa, has well established departments of Mathematics, Economics and Management, which enables our students to benefit from the consequent synergies, and it provides excellent conditions for hosting the Masters in Mathematical Finance. This fact, together with the high quality of the academic staff of this Masters, all of whom hold PhDs from
prestigious universities (such as the Stockholm School of Economics and the Universities of Oxford, Edinburgh and Barcelona), makes it unique in our country.

Course Description

As an MSc International Business single award student, you will have several study options, so you can shape your experience around your ambitions, interests and commitments.

Our standard master's involves rigorous core studies here at the Business School, followed by a term studying abroad at one of our partner institutions (ISCTE in Lisbon, Portugal; KEDGE in Marseille, France; ESC Clermont in France, or Brescia University in Italy). This is followed by a major project, at home or abroad.

International travel is a key element of this qualification, but we know some students may not be able to leave the UK for so long, so we also offer a stay-at-home route, involving more study here with us. All students are offered the chance to go on a two-week study tour, so it's hoped that stay-at-home students will take this shorter opportunity to gain international perspectives up close.

See the website https://www.ntu.ac.uk/study-and-courses/courses/find-your-course/business/pg/2017-18/international-business-single-award

Study tour

The study tour takes place each year, meaning that all students, whether they start in September or January, will have the opportunity to take part. The cost of the trip is covered by your tuition fees, and all students will be provided with help and support in applying for the necessary visas.

The destination and style of the trip varies each year, but previous destinations have included Lisbon, Brescia and Venice.

While abroad you will have the chance to take part in a number of activities, including industry visits, networking opportunities, attending lectures and seminars at a summer school, and of course some sight-seeing. The trip is also normally linked to your consultancy project, giving you the opportunity to meet the organisation you are working for, and present your ideas directly back to them.

The trip has proven itself to be a key factor in the success of the programme, with students benefiting from the business and cultural aspects of it. Some students have also been successful in securing internships with organisations involved.

Study and support

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participated in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

Interactivity is key to our teaching and we are committed to providing courses that adopt teaching methods that are appropriate to the student cohort and the specific modules.

We ensure that support and guidance is in place, especially during the early stages of the course and assessment periods, to help you become comfortable with operating in a student-centred learning environment.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research-based projects.

The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.

Induction

All our courses begin with a comprehensive development programme that will help you prepare for your studies and develop key academic and transferable skills. A key feature is a short residential team-building course, normally in the Peak District.

You will also have opportunities to meet members of the teaching team and other postgraduate students, receive detailed programme information, and gain valuable support and guidance from the library, careers service, international office and Student Support Services.

Overview
The Master's in Monetary and Financial Economics (MEMF) is an international-level programme that follows the best European practices in the area. As such, the selection criteria of applicants are demanding and this exigency level is kept along the course. Thus, the MEMF is not compatible with a weak background and with a low-effort profile, as we expect students to be prepared to spend a minimum of 3200 effort hours in 2 years.
The effort required from MEMF students is strongly valued in the labour market. Employers especially recognise to MEMF graduates a strong background in econometrics and quantitative methods, competence in macroeconomics and monetary economics, and a large capacity to face new challenges.
Exigency, competence, and rigour. These have been the leading principles of the MEMF for more than two decades and so they will be.

Objectives
The aims of the MEMF are: (i) providing advanced knowledge in the monetary and financial fields, based upon the most relevant results achieved by the scientific community; (ii) initiating its students in scientific research, by practicing the appropriate techniques and methodologies; and (iii) preparing the senior staff in monetary and financial institutions linked to financing the economy and to monetary policy issues.

History
The MEMF started in 1992/93, after being a specialisation area of the Master's in Economics, which had been created in 1981. From its beginning until 2010, it was directed by Vitor Constancio, who had also been the coordinator of the above-mentioned specialisation area in Monetary and Financial Economics. Luis Costa joined the directing team in 2003/04 and Miguel St. Aubyn officially joined it in 2010/11 after Vitor Constancio left it to become the Vice-President of the European Central Bank. Nevertheless, Vitor Constancio kept his relation to the MEMF as the non-executive Scientific Adviser.
In 1996/97 the programme was reformulated and in 2000/01 it was reformulated once again, jointly with other M.Sc. programmes in the scientific field of Economics. A new and profound upgrade would take place in 2007/08 in order to adapt the course to the Bologna Process.
The MEMF has worked continuously since its first edition in 1992/93. In this period amost four hundred students were enrolled and more than one hundred graduated. Study tour

The study tour takes place each year, all students have the opportunity to take part.

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participative in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

European Law is a one-year Master’s specialisation at the internationally renowned Leiden Law School at Leiden University. Course detail

European law is an exciting and rapidly developing discipline. There are few areas of national law and policy within Europe that remain untouched by the influence of European legislation. The scope of EU law, however is even wider, as Europe is becoming an increasingly important actor on the international stage.

In this programme, you will focus on the various aspects of European Law, as well as the European protection of human rights. You will study topics ranging from EU competition law to EU external relations law, from European social policy to internal market regulations and EU institutional law. You will gain in-depth knowledge about these aspects, while at the same time developing the professional skills needed in a EU-related legal career.

Purpose

Our aim in this programme is to provide you with in-depth academic knowledge, and to equip you with the professional skills needed in a EU-related legal career. For this purpose, teaching is done in small, seminar-style classes, with ample attention for practical skills in special `privatissimum’ and `practicum’ classes. Our programme attracts students from within and outside of the EU, which makes for a truly international atmosphere.

Programme

The European Law Master’s specialisation is founded on the Europa Institute’s research, ‘Securing the Rule of Law in a World of Multi-level Jurisdiction’. This has three components (‘Trias Europea’): the institutional structure of the Union, the protection of fundamental rights in an integrated Europe, and the regulation of economic relations. These three topics are included in every component of this programme, addressing the question as to how the rule of law (i.e. democracy, protection of human rights, adequate legal remedies) can be maintained while the law is developed at several levels.

Treaty of Lisbon

You will study the institutional structure of the Union (looking at the present Treaty structure as well as at proposed reforms in the Treaty of Lisbon) and the manner in which compliance with the fundamental rights within the legal order of the Union is ensured. In addition, you will learn about the position of the European Union in the world, the relation between EU law and national law, and the way in which trade and commerce is regulated by the EU.

Careers

The European Law Master’s programme offered by Europa Institute at Leiden will provide you with the skills necessary for a successful legal career in the private or public sector. Our alumni have found employment in:
• European institutions, such as the Council of Europe;
• international organisations, such as the United Nations, the OECD and the OCSE;
• national and local government;
• governmental and non-governmental organisations, such as UNHCR, IOM, Amnesty International and Greenpeace
• corporate companies;
• major law firms in Amsterdam, London, Brussels and Luxembourg;
• academia.
