This programme has strong links with the RIBA North and the Liverpool Biennial which, every two years, delivers an international programme of exhibitions and projects that lead to a rediscovery of the city.

Based within the School’s Architecture and Urban Design subject area, this studio-based programme is nourished by the School’s burgeoning research in Urbanism and close association with the University's European Institute for Urban Affairs.

The curriculum has creative place-making at its core and we welcome applicants from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds such as architecture, planning, landscape architecture, art and spatial design.

Research & Practice 1

An introduction to some of the common principles of research in Art and Design, tailored to help you develop the skills required to become an effective independent researcher / practitioner.

Studio Practice (Urban Design)

Upon successful completion of an urban design project, you will acquire skills to analyse contemporary urban design themes through in-depth research and the intelligent development of a critical argument. You will also be able to evaluate innovative and visionary urban design theories and precedents in the context of the project work and synthesize knowledge and skills in the production of an urban design strategy for the redevelopment of a substantial piece of cityscape.

Research & Practice 2 (Urban Design)

You will be presented with an overview of urban scale sustainable design principles and objectives. You will then explore a range of contemporary sustainable best practice case studies. These principles will then be applied in practical project work, exploring urban design sustainability benchmarks and audit methodologies. You will thereby be provided with a range of theoretical tools to support independent conceptual and critical evaluation of sustainable urban design. Tools will be explored such as to enable students to understand and evaluate the environmental impact and ecology of urban design proposals

Collaborative Practice

Here you will be given the opportunity to think through, re-situate and re-imagine how the term ‘collaboration’ can affect and develop your own developing art and design practice in the broadest sense. A framework of teaching, study and assessment that will allow the student to develop a realizable collaborative project proposal that has the capacity to be developed into a fundable/sustainable project/collaboration.

Final Major Project (Urban Design)

Through a major project you will explore and apply a contemporary urban design theme through in-depth research and intelligent development of a critical argument or creative piece of work.

This MSc is Europe's long-standing specialist graduate lighting programme. It provides a holistic approach to lighting design considering the human response to light and lighting, the science and technology of the subject, together with the design of lighting, as an integrated component of architecture and the built environment.

Degree information

Students develop an understanding of a wide range of topics associated with the design of the lit environment including lamp and luminaire technologies, the impact of light on architectural form and the human reaction to light. The programme provides a holistic approach to light and lighting so that graduates have both the vision to design beautiful lit environments and the skills necessary to ensure that they are successfully engineered.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (75 credits), one optional module (15 credits), and a light and lighting dissertation (90 credits).

Dissertation/research project

There are also other visits to laboratories and other facilities associated with the subject. Assessment is through coursework (essays and design projects), written examination and a 15,000-word dissertation.

The majority of graduates have either continued to work, or have gained employment in the lighting profession either in the lighting manufacturing industry or in lighting design. A number of students have used the MSc as a foundation for MPhil/PhD research.

The focus of the MA Interior Design course is rooted in 'creative practice'. As a postgraduate student, you will be able to form a uniquely individual, tailor made programme of study. You may choose to work either within an established area of contemporary interior design practice or explore the potential for design diversity.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

Staff involved in teaching the programme are Chartered members of associated professional bodies such as the RIBA. They will endeavour to provide assistance in opening up opportunities to network with regional bodies appropriate to your study programme.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Practical work is carried out within our extensive and very well equipped studios and workshops. A programme of guest lecturers, visits to exhibitions and UK cities, workshops, manufacturers, and opportunities to study abroad further broaden, support and enhance the environment within which you will study.

A special feature of the MA programme is the blend of practice and theory which underpins the student projects. As a student on an MA course in the School of Art Design and Performance you will belong to a large and varied postgraduate design community. You will study some core modules alongside students from other design disciplines and through this participation in a common programme; you will experience a strong sense of community, sharing of knowledge and access to a wide range of staff skills and resources.

Practical and theoretical elements are assessed. Assessment strategies involve portfolio assessment, presentations and reflective diary summaries.

Successful completion of a combination of research and practice modules leads to the MA award. Intermediate Diploma or Certificate exit awards are available should studies be incomplete.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The MA Interior Design course has been developed as a coherent part of the School of Art Design and Performance’s master's programmes and shares the same values and philosophies that unite them. At the outset of the programme all students are required to participate in an induction and diagnostic phase. During this three week programme student’s develop a proposed area of study and negotiate methods and topics for their research.

Throughout the master's programme students work simultaneously on both their research and practice modules. Research often helps students to re-orientate themselves in industry and to develop very personal design philosophies that inform their practice thinking. Upon conclusion of their practice studies students are expected to have achieved outcomes made possible through unique connections explored through their research.

In the second semester you may choose to undertake field studies and take a more outward looking focus and more rigorous validation of their ideas through professional networking or even external placement. You will have the opportunity to study abroad for a period of time and a regular feature of the course takes students to New York and Berlin.

Interior Design also encourages students to engage in internship positions as part of their studies that offer real design practice experience. These experiences can fuel the development of rich and varied CV’s ready to enhance your career.

By the end of the course all students should have completed a cohesive body of creative work to a professional standard and be able to clearly articulate a sound intellectual rationale and broad critical viewpoint.

OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to the employment opportunities we seek out for students we are keen to travel to explore and research realistic design contexts. These trips range from those close to home to more International locations. As a result we visit sculpture parks, local cities in the North West of the UK, London, Berlin and New York. We receive fantastic feedback from students about these experiences.

The MA will further your career opportunities within commercial design practice. Research has shown that graduates who have undertaken some form of work experience are significantly more likely to gain employment in relevant sectors than those who have had no work experience. The programme has strong a strong track record of internship success with students following leads provided by staff to take part time positions in practice during their studies.

The MA is, however, not seen as wholly vocational as it also recognises the value of personal development, satisfaction and enlightenment.

Overview

This dynamic new course will prepare you for the world of contemporary, global fashion design, improving your professional skills, your academic understanding and your industry knowledge.

You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the international fashion world, and the business-led factors that influence professional practice.

Our course mixes traditional and experimental fashion design processes with theory and practical work. This will encourage you to think about important issues and future trends in the fashion industry and how you could adapt or improve upon your design, styling, marketing or promotional work. For example, you might explore relationships between your design process, marketing strategy and psychological theories. Or you might look at the connections between mathematics and pattern-cutting; or sustainable design and production processes.

We'll investigate different markets and consumers, too. Having learned more about people's wants and needs, you'll use your insight to create innovative designs, along with branding and promotional strategies.

Throughout the course you'll be working closely with other students. Together, we'll share and debate our ideas and working practices, and learn to critically analyse our work.

Assessment

We'll measure your progress using a number of assessment methods that reflect the skills you'll need to demonstrate in the fashion industry. These include sketchbooks; reflective journals; technical files; brand, consumer and market research files; collaboration files; brand and promotion packages; portfolio work (visualisation and styling); 3D realisation and collection creation; presentations (audio visual and oral); written reports; your Master's dissertation; and Personal Development Planning (PDP).

Cambridge School of Art has been inspiring creativity since 1858 when it was opened by John Ruskin.

Engaging with current debates surrounding contemporary practice and with the state-of-the-art facilities, Cambridge School of Art houses light, bright studios, industry-standard film and photographic facilities, and 150-year-old printing presses alongside dedicated Apple Mac suites. This course provides education and training in selected weapons systems. The course is intended for officers of the armed forces and for scientists and technical officers in government defence establishments and the defence industry. It is particularly suitable for those who, in their subsequent careers, will be involved with the specification, analysis, development, technical management or operation of weapons systems.

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and will contribute towards an application for chartered status.

Overview

The Gun System Design MSc is part of the Vehicle and Weapons Engineering Programme. The course is designed to provide an understanding of the technologies used in the design, development, test and evaluation of gun systems.

This course offers the underpinning knowledge and education to enhance the student’s suitability for senior positions within their organisation.

Each individual module is designed and offered as a standalone course which allows an individual to understand the fundamental technology required to efficiently perform the relevant, specific job responsibilities. The course provides students with the depth of knowledge to undertake engineering analysis or the evaluation of relevant sub systems.

To develop the technical requirements and characteristics of armoured fighting vehicles and weapon systems, and to examine the interactions between the various sub-systems and consequential compromises and trade-offs.

- Application of systems engineering practice to an armoured fighting vehicle and weapon system.
- Practical aspects of system integration.
- Ammunition stowage, handling, replenishment and their effects on crew performance and safety.
- Applications of power, data and video bus technology to next generation armoured fighting vehicles.
- Effects of nuclear, biological and chemical attack on personnel and vehicles, and their survivability.

On successful completion of the group project the students should be able to –

Undertaking both self-directed and industry-driven projects, you’ll learn to challenge preconceived thinking and develop innovative approaches to your design work. You’ll also develop your creative thinking around the professional, business and social contexts of graphic communication.

Throughout the course, your project work will be supported by collaboration and dialogue with staff, visiting professionals and fellow students.

Objective of the course is teaching first the design methodology that, by analyzing the codes of expression and conduct of the contemporary consumer, the identity of the customer, current trends in design and materials technology, allows students to capture an important wealth of experience. Students learn to create their own expressive language and to include in it, enhancing it, their creativity. They are taught to create project layout particularly accurate in the colors, materials, finishes, lighting effects, that can offer new sensory and emotional experiences.

The main activity of the course in the classroom is the development of strategic value projects, able to meet the diverse needs of the design industries. Under the guidance of a faculty, consisting mainly of professionals and designers, projects take place according to an open system, in which participants are invited to collaborate with Italian companies of international reputation and brand with young people, looking for an innovative and sustainable design .

The programme is made up of four weeks of introductory workshops, which serve to examine the knowledge and methods of design students from all over the world. After these four experiences students will support the three main projects through Project Laboratories, of different length and complexity, the difficulty gradually increases during the year.

The classes alternate with the three projects that examine some of the areas of interior design: retail spaces, hospitality and wellness facilities. The projects are developed simulating a real professional situation: brief, development and presentation.

Students examine the environmental issues in parallel with natural and recyclable materials, environmentally-friendly production processes, in collaboration with specialized companies. Classes involve also the issue of indoor, natural and artificial, through the knowledge of the light sources, new technologies and systems of light control.

The Master organizes seminars conducted by design practitioners, visits to leading manufacturers of materials and showroom, participation at events (most notably the Salone del Mobile in Milan), workshops and interdisciplinary laboratories.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students submit a 10,000-word report on a topic related to the main themes of the programme. The topic can be chosen to enhance career development or for its inherent interest.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of interactive seminars, individual and group tutorials, site visits and a residential field trip. Assessment is through unseen examination, coursework, and the built environment report. Joint coursework, including two major low-energy architectural design projects, is carried out by students in multi-disciplinary teams.

Fieldwork
Students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips and site visits including a residential trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology in north Wales. There are no additional cost to students for the field trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology.

Most students who complete the programme move into, or continue in, a building-related profession, such as architecture, low-energy design consultancy, or building services engineering. As the awareness of global environmental issues increases, the demand for people with expertise in the health and energy performance of buildings is expanding rapidly. This programme is very "close to market" with many students finding jobs even before their studies have finished: the skills students gain are those that employers need. For example, we teach several tools used by commercial companies including the thermal analysis software IESVE and SAP. Design
-Understand the nature of the engineering design process
-Investigate and define a problem and identify constraints, including environmental and sustainability limitations, and health and safety and risk assessment issues
-Understand customer and user needs and the importance of considerations such as aesthetics

-Use creativity to establish innovative solutions
-Ensure fitness for purpose and all aspects of the problem including production, operation, maintenance and disposal
-Manage the design process and evaluate outcomes
-Have wide knowledge and comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and be able to apply and adapt them in unfamiliar situations
-Be able to generate an innovative design for products, systems, components or processes, to fulfil new needs

Project management
-Be able to work as a member of a team

-Be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment
-Know about management techniques that may be used to achieve engineering objectives within the commercial and economic context of engineering processes
