Logistics is the management of this end-to-end supply chain that provides the means to achieve strategic goals.

Course Overview

The MSc in Logistics is designed around three themes: logistics, business management and research. The programme is underpinned by the study of logistics strategies and operations. Future developments in logistics is the focus of sustainable logistics. The management of complex scenarios is the rationale for modelling logistics.

To deal with suppliers it is necessary to have an understanding of financial management and the law relating to contracts. To make logistics changes happen requires skills in managing human and organisational resources.

Connecting these two themes is an overall emphasis on undertaking research: learning and using qualitative and quantitative research techniques which culminate in an individual research project.

Gain the skills to become a professional occupational therapist, able to deliver and evaluate occupational therapy services in a range of traditional and innovative settings.

We place an emphasis on understanding humans as occupational beings, and the relationship between occupation and health. As a result, you will explore topics such as occupational science, the history and development of the therapy, the complex nature of human occupation, the impact of illness, and the relative detrimental effects on health and wellbeing. You will learn to develop methods of assessing and enhancing occupational performance.

Your learning experience will include problem-based tutorials, journal clubs, creative and practical sessions, self-directed learning and research. Practice Placements

Humans as Occupational Beings
This is the first module in which students learn about the nature of human occupation and how this links with health and well being.

Occupational Therapy Toolbox
In this module students learn about the core skills of occupational therapy; theory, practice and issues related to occupational needs of people in a variety of settings. There is an integrated practice placement in this module.

Contributing to Professional Knowledge 1 & 2
This module runs throughout the two years of the course. Students learn research methods and approaches and conduct their own research project.

Occupation & Health: Individual Perspective
Students revisit occupational therapy practice in this module and focus on how they might work with individuals with a range of conditions and occupational needs. There is an integrated practice placement in this module.

Occupation & Health: Groups & Communities
This focus of this module is how occupational therapy can contribute to the health and well-being of groups and communities nationally and internationally. The practice placement is in a role-emerging setting where they have to demonstrate the unique contribution of occupational therapy or an occupational perspective.

Transition into Practice
This is the final module and students make the transition from student to practitioner and focus on management, supervision and working with individuals with complex occupational needs. There is a 10 week final practice placement.

Occupation in Context
The focus of this module is occupation in the broader context on a local, national and international level; and how occupational therapists might contribute to organisations and society.

It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices.

You also again gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included working with participants in our cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.

Course structure

The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MSc.

You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked in organisations including a cardiac rehabilitation programme and fall prevention classes with Albion in the Community. Many students have started their professional careers with the organisation that provided them with work experience.

Areas of study

In taught physiology modules, you'll experience and discuss the responses of the human body to various stimuli, including effect of environmental changes (heat and hypoxic chambers) and of ergogenic aids which can be used to simulate peculiar clinical conditions and help students understand better exercise tolerance. This novel approach to teaching integrative physiology will help you to develop a host of laboratory skills. You will be introduced to the latest in the research field of exercise physiology and will have an opportunity to write your own paper from your research project.

• a biomechanics laboratory with motion analysis equipment, various EMG systems, and immersive screen

• an environmental laboratory with purpose-built environment chamber where we can simulate different climates by controlling the temperature (-20 to +50°C) and relative humidity (20 to 95%), and a 1.13m x 1.13m x 1.5m water immersion tank

Students also have the opportunity to take appropriate vocational qualifications and work placements as part of the programme.

Course detail

In addition to the demand for vocational qualifications there is also a need for strength and conditioning practitioners to develop advanced skills and understanding in the field. This programme provides the opportunity to develop research, academic and practical skills that are
highly relevant to the discipline of strength and conditioning. The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in strength and conditioning who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform strength and conditioning practice.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Training Intervention module this could mean use of highly controlled laboratory based endurance training or field based repeated sprint conditioning with larger numbers of participants.

Format

How the programme is delivered is just as important as what is delivered for the development of appropriate Masters level skills and understanding. The teaching and assessment on the programme aims to actively engage students in a variety of learning activities.

The delivery model is based upon a single, all day study day per week. This model of delivery is aimed to support students who are in employment while undertaking the programme. The study days will be designed to engage you in interdisciplinary debate, professional practice, critical review of research, generation of feedback, presentations and data collection.

Full-time students will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

Part-time students will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Training Interventions – investigation of training intervention and physiological adaptation for the enhancement of performance.

• Athlete Development – appreciate the inter-play between growth and maturation and use physiological and psychological markers to develop performance during growth.

• Research paper - Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Work placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards accreditation with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA). An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be strength and conditioning experience with York City FC/York City Knights RLFC or a British Weight Lifting Association qualification/UKSCA assessment preparation day facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

INTRODUCTION

Whilst there is probably not a serious shortage of theoretically oriented practitioners in mechanical engineering, there is a shortage of highly skilled practically oriented mechanical technologists and engineers in the world today, due to the new technologies only recently becoming a key component of all modern plants, factories and offices. The critical shortage of experts in the area has been accentuated by retirement, restructuring and rapid growth in new industries and technologies. This is regardless of the recession in many countries.

Many businesses throughout the world comment on the difficulty in finding experienced mechanical engineers and technologists despite paying outstanding salaries. For example, about two years ago a need developed for mechanical technologists and engineers in building process plants. The interface from the traditional SCADA and industrial automation system to the web and to mechanical equipment has also created a new need for expertise in these areas. Specialists in these areas are few and far between.

The aim of this 18 month e-learning program is to provide you with core skills in working with mechanical engineering technology and systems and to take advantage of the growing need by industry here.

In this course you will choose to major in continence and women’s health or manipulative therapy. In both majors you will study the philosophy of evidence-based practice and develop practical skills in identifying, acquiring, evaluating and using evidence. You will further your clinical decision-making skills through the use of statistical analysis, including the examination of various forms of statistical testing.

The rest of your studies will comprise specialised coursework units and clinical practice. During your clinical practice you will detail a variety of case histories and evaluate each as a reflective practitioner.

Continence and Women's Health

This major will provide you with the opportunity to become an expert clinician in women's health physiotherapy and its related areas of practice. In this major you will develop clinical skills in the assessment and management of conditions which are unique, common or serious to women, or require special interventions in women.

You will develop particular expertise in the management of pelvic floor dysfunction and its presentations, including bladder and bowel dysfunction, disorders of the pelvic organ and pelvic girdle support, sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain.

Manipulative Therapy

The Manipulative Therapy major is designed to enhance knowledge, skill and clinical competencies in muscoloskeletal physiotherapy practice.

In this major you can learn: advanced examination and treatment, advanced patient management and clinical communication skills through evidence-based practice and contemporary clinical practice methods.

Please note: Participation is obligatory in laboratory classes which require appropriate disrobing when acting as clients in the peer group, and physically manipulating patients including lifting and supporting people with disabilities.

Helping people to function in daily living activities and promoting well-being at home, in school, at work, and in leisure are of prime concern to the occupational therapist. Occupational therapists take a holistic approach and are involved in client evaluation and intervention as part of a health care team. They also play a role in wider health issues such as community development, health promotion and policy making.

This graduate entry master course offers you a fast-track option to becoming an occupational therapist. You will develop knowledge of four broad areas:

-Medical, psychiatric, orthopaedic and neurological conditions which affect the health and well-being of individuals.
-The theory and practice of occupational therapy including the study of occupation and analysis of the physical, psychological and social requirements of a variety of skills and activities.
-Human development covering normal growth and development within the life cycle along with problems which occur such as learning disabilities and the effects of ageing.
-Occupational health and management, including prevention, education and rehabilitation programs for a variety of workplaces.
-Your studies will be complemented with extensive clinical fieldwork practice. You will also have the unique opportunity to take part in the Occupational Therapy Abroad program, participating in a fieldwork placement in China, India, South Africa or Ukraine for four weeks.

Professional recognition

Graduates using the title of registered health practitioner or the title of occupational therapist must be registered with Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the National Board). Registration for practice enables graduates, once registered, to practise occupational therapy in all Australian states and territories. Graduates can also choose to be a member of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or Occupational Therapy Australia (WA). The course is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Graduates may also apply for registration in most countries although some countries may require sitting a licensing examination.

Graduates applying for licensure in the United States of America, United Kingdom or Canada will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.
