To qualify for the award of MSc, it will be necessary for you to complete seven modules, four compulsory 20 credit modules, the dissertation (60 credit module), together with two optional 20 credit modules which tailor the programme to your particular needs and interests.

Each 20 credit module will take approximately 200 hours of independent study (the dissertation 600 hours). Compulsory modules cover the fundamental areas pertinent to lift engineering including the codes and standards to which lifts and their design must adhere to. Optional modules allow you to pursue your own particular specialisation within the industry.

Course content

The course will benefit lift engineers and consultants as well as members of senior management in the lift industry. You will gain an in-depth understanding of advanced technical issues arising in lift design, maintenance and contract management. The course teaches the skills required in electrical and mechanical science, together with mathematics and other engineering areas associated with the lift industry.

The course aims to provide a detailed, academic study of lift engineering and related management issues, together with a higher level qualification for persons employed in lift engineering as well as allied industries.

Special course features

The MSc is delivered in a distance learning regime. In this regime the emphasis is on learning rather than teaching, and the tutorial team is staffed and supported by a combination of experienced educational practitioners, together with experienced practitioners drawn from the national and international lift industry.

At the beginning of each academic year students are invited to participate in the annual Symposium on Lift and Escalator Technologies, organized in conjunction with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Lifts Group. You will have an opportunity to attend this event at reduced registration fee. The symposium has become an annual event, is in its fifth year and brings together over 100 industrial and academic experts from within the field of vertical transportation engineering with peer-reviewed papers on the subject of their research being presented and published.

The programme holds regular online meetings through the WizIQ/ virtual classroom tools within NILE (Northampton Integrated Learning Environment). These are attended virtually by staff, student representatives and industry experts (including visiting professors and fellows). Students have an opportunity to attend open virtual (online) meetings to discuss their learning progress. This virtual environment helps to reduce the potential isolation of students and provides the opportunity for the tutors to supply additional learning and tutorial materials.

Careers

The broad range of skills, experiences and expertise developed during this course will mean graduates are better placed to progress in their professional career. The programme is in the process of accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The course was initially developed through collaboration with the Lift industry and is extensively supported by the industry. Its content is regularly reviewed by industry experts – including four visiting professors/fellows all of whom hold senior positions within the industry or academia.

These fellows also assume associate lecturer roles, and assist with the delivery and support of modules and dissertations on the programme. The School of Science and Technology has an active research programme in the field of lift engineering as well as well-equipped laboratory facilities for those wishing to pursue a research degree (MPhil/PhD).

The MA in World Theatres is one of the few freestanding taught Masters programmes in world theatres and performance in the UK and globally.

The programme aims to train graduates for professional employment in a range of positions in theatre, in government settings, in HE internationally and in the culture sector that requires solid intellectual preparation and knowledge of the field. Practitioners who come on the programme can use knowledge acquired to extend the articulation of their career.

Our location in London means that you'll be close to the one of the largest concentrations of performance practice in Europe.

And the Department of Theatre and Performance’s intercultural and interdisciplinary ethos has led to key international relationships, including with LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre), the large scale biennale international theatre festival, with on-going intercultural projects in London on a constant basis. The Department of Theatre and Performance's research culture is both interdisciplinary and intercultural. It's an ethos reflected across our staff, our programmes and our students.

As a research student, you may register either for research based on practice with a written element, or for research by written thesis.

If your topic is practice-led you should be concerned to contextualise your practice in relation to other cultural production and critical theory in your contribution to new knowledge.

Empirical research is essential to innovative practice and you will be required to propose how you intend to conduct this during the course of your studies, as well as present and document this as part of your final submission.

At research level, the Department’s aim is to encourage and support innovative thinking and approaches to praxis, both historical and contemporary and within a broad cultural frame of reference, and for this to be conducted within the context of live as well as academic sources.

Structure

All students initially enrol on the MPhil programme and may subsequently upgrade to PhD status if their work is considered to be at the appropriate level. You can study full-time or part-time and can optionally apply to upgrade to PhD registration usually after 18 months (full-time) or 24 months (part-time).

All students are supervised by a full-time member of staff, generally agreed during the preliminary discussion regarding your research with the Department’s Director of Postgraduate Studies.

Research methodology seminar

All students enrolled on the MPhil programme are required to attend a weekly seminar in research methodology. This seminar is designed to bring together research students with diverse interests in a co-operative and stimulating environment.

Its objectives include training students for the Spring Review Week, written and oral presentations, preparation for upgrading procedures, and publication of articles.

Assessment

Through thesis and viva voce. If you are studying for a practice-based degree, you present a thesis in the form of a practical presentation and written dissertation, and have a viva voce.

Before you start at Goldsmiths, the actual topic of your research has to be agreed with your proposed supervisor, who will be a member of staff active in your general field of research. Who is it for?

Students interested in extending their knowledge and developing critical and research skills in ethnomusicology.

The course provides a rigorous training relevant to a range of professional careers, including further study at doctoral level.

Objectives

Combining academic rigour with a flexible course structure, the MA Ethnomusicology introduces students to new ways of thinking about music in its cultural contexts, with a particular focus on ethnographic work in urban settings.

Students consider current issues and debates in ethnomusicology and explore the complex interrelationships between music and other subjects, and between theory and creative practice. The course provides a rich creative environment in which to develop critical approaches to musical practices. The MA offers a range of options, with students able to focus project work on areas of individual interest. The course also provides training in fundamental research skills.

Placements

The professional work placement is an elective module giving you the opportunity to work in the cultural sector to apply the skills you have gained from the programme so far.

When it comes to the organisation, it is totally up to you. Previous students have gained experience with the Southbank Centre, The British Library, IMG Artists, LIFT, Arts Council England and the British Film Institute.

Academic facilities

Music students can take advantage of our advanced recording and composition studios, a professional performance space, computer laboratories, rehearsal rooms, practice rooms and world music instruments.

Our composition studios include three surround (8.1/ 5.1) studios, one of which is dedicated to film and live electronics work, and three stereo composition studios. All of the studios are equipped for sound editing, processing and mixing. As well as general software such as Logic, Sibelius and Pro Tools, these studios are equipped with Native Instruments Komplete.

The recording studio is equipped to deliver multitrack recording and mixing to a professional standard.

Scholarships

We are offering one full fee-waiver scholarship for entry to any of our MA pathways in September 2017.

The Robert Anderson Scholarship provides a full-fee waiver at UK/EU rates. International students are also eligible to apply and if successful will have the equivalent UK/EU fee amount deducted from the international fee. The deadline for applications is Friday 5th May 2017.

In addition to your main application, scholarship applications should include:
-A CV indicating your studies and achievements to date.
-A statement indicating why you feel you are particularly deserving of such an award and outlining the contribution you will make to the Music Department.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is through lectures, small group seminars and one-to-one tutorials in which students receive supervision from world-leading researchers.

In addition, we arrange off-site visits, such as to the British Library or to relevant conferences. Project work also involves engaging with external organisations, including local communities.

We use a range of assessment types, including extended projects, portfolio submissions and written examinations. Assessment will depend on the particular modules chosen by students.

We have a vibrant postgraduate community and there are plenty of opportunities for involvement in our many ensembles, including Javanese and Balinese gamelans, Middle Eastern ensemble and Latin ensemble.

We host a regular concert series and an annual summer music festival. In addition, there are regular workshops, visiting speakers and research seminars, and we also host occasional conferences.

Modules

MA Ethnomusicology students take two core modules (total 60 credits), two or three elective modules (total 30 or 60 credits), and also produce a final Ethnomusicology Major Project (60 or 90 credits).

A typical 30 credit taught module involves two hours of lectures/seminars per week over a ten-week teaching term, plus a total of one-hour tutorial supervision over the course of the module (usually two thirty minute meetings). In addition, the MA involves a significant amount of self-directed study, including preparation between classes, and researching and writing projects, equivalent to about 18 hours per week over a fifteen-week period (from the start of teaching to the final assessment).

Students take two core modules in the first term, followed by elective modules in the second term (for part-time students the modules are spread over two years).

Dissertation
The MA culminates in a 60 or 90 credit Ethnomusicology Major Project, an extended independent project on an ethnomusicological topic running through the spring and summer terms, which students complete by the end of August. All projects will include an ethnographic component and can take the form of a 12-15,000 (60 credit) or 15-20,000 (90 credit) word dissertation, an ethnographic film and accompanying written commentary, or a lecture-recital and accompanying written commentary.

In over 3 decades there has been a creative surge in hybrid live performance worldwide. This has been the work of solo artists, ensembles, auteurs and performer-directors across creative fields, who have redefined boundaries and stretched the artistic and social imagination into new spaces, both literally and figuratively.

Within the vibrant environment of Goldsmiths, and with all the stimulus that London offers culturally, practising or emerging practitioners develop compositional, critical, technical and management skills and strategies for forging independent and self-motivated careers. Our graduates work as practitioners, teachers and cultural leaders worldwide.

On the programme you will conceive, research, construct and deliver your ideas and articulate what motivates these. Teaching is rigorous and interdisciplinary. You study with distinguished international artists as well as scholars within a praxis ethos where theory informs creativity and vice versa. The emphasis throughout is on encouraging collaboration across disciplines and cultures, and on contextualising practice within its social, political and architectural environment.

Skills

You will become conversant, confident and skilled in a range of methodological practices as well as compositional strategies for independent theatrical, dance theatre and live art creation.

Your critical and analytical skills in interpreting artistic practice will be tested in a range of verbal, written and oral ways. Your study of your own body as a creative instrument will be complemented by learning the principles of scenography and film narrative.

Format

Structure and content

This course comprises two 15-week semesters of taught modules, a winter programming assignment over three weeks in January, and the MSc project over three months at the end. Semester 1 concentrates on fundamental techniques. Semester 2 integrates, develops and applies these skills.
Practical work is a key component in this course. It builds from self contained tasks in the first semester, over the larger Winter programming assignment, to a group project in Semester 2. Finally, the dissertation project (possibly with a company) is the largest piece of work leading to your MSc dissertation. We usually place more than 50% of our students with a company for the MSc project duration.

Music students can take advantage of our advanced recording and composition studios, a professional performance space, computer laboratories, rehearsal rooms, practice rooms and world music instruments.

Our composition studios include three surround (8.1/ 5.1) studios, one of which is dedicated to film and live electronics work, and three stereo composition studios. All of the studios are equipped for sound editing, processing and mixing. As well as general software such as Logic, Sibelius and Pro Tools, these studios are equipped with Native Instruments Komplete.

The recording studio is equipped to deliver multitrack recording and mixing to a professional standard.

As well as the excellent library facilities at City and close by, such as the British Library, as part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is through lectures, small group seminars and one-to-one tutorials in which students receive supervision from world-leading researchers. We have a vibrant postgraduate community and there are plenty of opportunities for involvement in our many ensembles. We host a regular concert series and an annual summer music festival. In addition, there are regular workshops, visiting speakers and postgraduate research seminars, and we also host occasional conferences.

In-depth preparation for practice

You receive rigorous training on personal, professional and academic levels, which requires you to combine personal development with explicit psychological theory as a basis for mindful clinical practice.

Our links with practices and partner providers, such as LIFT, the NHS and the Avon Wiltshire Partnership, make this course highly vocational and popular with employers.

Based on the relational psychodynamic perspective, coupled with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, this course is designed to help you develop an integrative perspective based on these perspectives and any previous experience. For example, you may already have studied client-centred or existential perspectives as part of counselling certificate courses. The programme team is committed to the view that the therapeutic relationship is a key factor in promoting client change.
