Humber’s Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management graduate certificate program is designed to build on the knowledge you have acquired in your university undergraduate degree by providing in-depth, hands-on instruction in the areas of fitness assessment, health and lifestyle counselling, exercise prescription and delivery, health promotion, group exercise leadership, health and fitness management, marketing and entrepreneurship, ergonomic assessment, and functional abilities assessment. Students learn in small groups, instructed by expert faculty currently employed in the fitness and health industry.

Course detail

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
• Prescribe exercise programs that promote improved health status and/or improved physical performance.
• Perform a comprehensive consultation with a client and use the information collected to guide the development of an exercise training program.
• Provide appropriate instruction of exercise execution, including appropriate verbal and tactile cues.
• Utilize counselling skills to support a client in determining and meeting their fitness and lifestyle goals.
• Administer the CPAFLA protocol accurately, and interpret and communicate the results.

Work Placement

Experiential learning is an integral part of this program. The program features three unpaid internship courses, two of which take place on campus (semester 1 and semester 2) and the third of which takes place off campus in the spring, following semester 2. During the on-campus internship courses, students provide fitness assessments and testing, physical activity counselling and prescription services to Humber and partner employees as part of the Humber Centre for Healthy Living (Humber CHL). Students have the opportunity to run workshops for the Humber CHL and its partners, as well as providing healthy tips and videos for the Humber CHL website. Throughout the on-campus internship courses, students participate in seminars with their professors and classmates to critically analyze their experiences and develop the skills required for professional work.

The final work placement is a four-week block placement off campus with one of Humber’s industry partners.

It is in perpetual movement and the core ideas defining its framework are being dismantled one by one. Is it still accurate to equate luxury with rarity when 94% of Japanese Women in their twenties are said to own a Louis Vuitton bag? Should we still assume that Luxury brands invariably utilize a price skimming strategy when Hermes was forced to hold its first ever sale in Hangzhou China in 2014?

The matter at stake here is to understand if the structural changes faced by this prestigious industry push it to morph and explode into various different, and sometimes paradoxical, ideologies; or if those same structural changes are precisely pushing luxury to initiate a retrenchment to its traditional and secular values, back to its original core? Our Luxury brand Management course covers a wide range of modules clustered into five main module groupings:

Marketing and Management:

This grouping encompasses a series of modules that will be sequentially planned based on the structure of a marketing plan. The overall body of knowledge acquired by the students will prepare them to:

analyse complex marketing challenges based on practical case studies
allocate resources strategically to achieve pre-determined objectives
craft brand DNAs allowing for the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage

Business Issues:

The capacity to listen and interpret markets’ signals is a key component of today’s managers. It needs to be continuously cultivated. Within this module grouping students will discover the idiosyncrasies of the luxury industry from an economic and financial view point.

Luxury Environment:

The concept of rarity has traditionally been associated to the idea of luxury. However, while rarity is still an important factor in determining the value of a luxury brand, terms such as “exclusivity” or “space” are now strongly resounding within customers’ minds as alternative descriptors. In this module grouping students will study the historical evolution of the luxury industry and will explore macro trends that are structuring the different international markets.

Luxury Lifestyle:

The series of seminars comprised within the “Luxury Lifestyle” module grouping will allow our students to experience diverse industries and give them more specific insights on each of them. Topics such as Haute Couture, Jewellery, Luxury Watch Making…etc will be covered by specialists of the sectors who will guide the students through their discovery process.

MSc Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health

This is an online Master specialisation within the MSc Nutrition and Health.

Online Master

The online master specialisation is designed for part-time study (approx. 20 hrs/week) to combine work and study or in the context of Life-Long-Learning. A course-programme of 2 years will be followed by a tailor-made internship and Master thesis. The internship and thesis will together take up either 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time. During the courses, you will closely collaborate with lecturers, tutors and fellow distance learning students using a virtual learning platform. The course programme includes a short stay of one week on Wageningen Campus together with the other students in this programme. There are options to organise the academic internship and Master thesis in your own professional context, either parttime or full-time.

The master specialisation Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health addresses the design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological research, both interventional and observational. It focuses on the aetiology and prevention of diseases, with specific reference to dietary patterns, nutritional factors and lifestyle. Central issues are assessment of exposure, risk factors of disease, biomarkers for health status and analysis and interpretation of major study designs. Since you need expertise and competences in both nutritional epidemiology ànd public health to be able to fully understand this domain, the study programme consists of different courses and trainings combining these two fields.

Nutritional epidemiology courses focus on the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological research, both in the clinical domain and in free living population groups. Concerning health outcomes, the emphasis is on dietrelated diseases and conditions, such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and certain infectious diseases. Nutritional epidemiology is closely related to clinical research and causal inference in the biomedical domain, relevant to underpinning public health interventions in dietary patterns and lifestyle. The acquired evidence from epidemiological research has to be translated into public health policies and health promotion programmes, both at the local, national and international level. Public health courses address the design, organisation, implementation and evaluation of intervention programs that address the lifestyles of individuals (e.g., behaviour, food choice, physical activity, well-being) and/or societal context (e.g. work, school, media, policies). Public health has close relationships with methods and theories from psychological, social, economic, agriculture and political research.

Graduates of the Master Nutrition and Health greatly value the research skills they acquired in the programme. After graduation, many of them begin working as researchers or PhD students. Another group becomes advisors, trainers or take up other jobs in the private sector. But then he felt the need to obtain a master’s degree in public health nutrition: “This master taught me how to use the up-to-date scientific evidence for programme design and implementation. From the courses, I acquired the technical skills to do research and from my thesis and internship at the World Food Programme (WFP) I learned how to put research into practice. Now I work as an international consultant of the Policy, Programme and Innovation Division of the WFP at its headquarters in Rome.”

The MRes Health and Wellbeing aims to develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the social, biological and environmental drivers of individual health behaviours and interventions appropriate to develop health and wellbeing. It is designed to extend your understanding of the social science underpinning the development of effective interventions, strategies and policies aimed at sustainable improvement in health and wellbeing, and reducing physical and psychological health inequalities. The programme examines contemporary issues related to modifiable disease risk behaviours, and the determinants and correlates of these lifestyle behaviours across the lifespan. You should develop an understanding of the interdisciplinary skills and processes to translate scientific research into practical health and wellbeing applications.

The programme aims to prepare you for a career as a professional researcher in either academic or non-academic environments. Learning and teaching

The programme will adopt a range of small group teaching methods alongside the encouragement of independent study. An innovative element of the programme will be to integrate inter-institutional teaching through the ‘Contemporary Debates in Lifestyle Behaviours and Public Health’ interdisciplinary module aimed at providing an insight into the challenges of working across disciplines with staff and fellow students.

Course Content

The course has three possible exit points. Successfully completing 60 credits worth of modules gains the Postgraduate Certificate. Successfully completing 120 credits, gains the Postgraduate Diploma and the full Masters is awarded on successful completion of 180 credits, comprising six taught modules plus a 13,000 word dissertation of the requisite quality. There will be a time-commitment for 8 mid-week sessions per semester and 4 of these will require on-site attendance. Students will participate in regular on-line discussion throughout the course. An additional 15 day commitment is required for completion of the embedded work placement. A number of different work formats are available for the work placement and students working in relevant areas may be able to complete this in their current workplace. Assessment is by on-line discussion, essays, case studies, reflective accounts, presentations, practical assessment, evaluative report and research dissertation.

Career Prospects

Integral to all parts of the course is the development of skills and competencies in areas highlighted as a priority by Public Health England. This will include preventative approaches and tackling emerging conditions early, engaging hard to reach groups in the prevention and management of chronic disease, including males, ethnic minorities, pregnant women, the elderly and those from low socio-economic groups. They will be informed by the competencies put forward in the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework at Level 7. The course will include a work-based learning component whereby students are involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a particular project and this will place graduates in a favourable position to climb the career ladder in organisations with a chronic disease focus.

Programme summary

Nutrition and Health focuses on the role of dietary and lifestyle factors in human health and disease. This role is studied from a biomedical perspective at the individual and population levels. In addition, the mechanisms underlying beneficial and adverse effects are studied at the sub-cellular (DNA), cellular and organ/ organism levels. Human nutrition is a multidisciplinary field of expertise. To solve problems in nutrition and health, you must consider chemical and biochemical characteristics, physiological and biomedical aspects, the social and behavioural context of nutrition, and the relationships between these factors. Solving problems in this domain requires multidisciplinary biomedical knowledge and skills as well as an interdisciplinary approach to communication with experts in human nutrition and other fields.

Epidemiology and Public Health
Epidemiologists try to determine causal relationships in large groups of people, such as the elderly or people with cardiovascular problems; between food, lifestyle and the development of diseases. Research results act as starting points for health advice and lead to a greater understanding of cause and effect. Complete Online Master

Nutritional Physiology and Health Status
In this specialisation, you will study various age groups and situations, such as growth, pregnancy, and food consumption behaviour. You will also review special situations including serious diseases (clinical food), during sports and activity. You may also research the food consumption behaviour and habits of individuals and how you may be able to influence that, for example, through portion sizes. In short, you will review different aspects and will learn what the effects are of food consumption patterns and the physiological processes on the body and what that means for the status of its health and illness.

Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology
In this specialisation, you will learn to use techniques, at molecular and cellular levels, to discover the mechanism driving the relationship between food and health. In toxicology, you will learn to study the possible poisonous effects of substances present in food. For instance, new ingredients in food products and additives, but also natural substances present in our food. The relationship between food consumption, food and medicines can also be researched and through this research, you will find many new leads to improving our health.

Sensory Science
This specialisation is positioned at the interface of the programmes Food Technology and Nutrition and Health. Sensory scientists deal with the way humans perceive the world and act upon sensory input. They address how sensory systems function, from stimulation and perception to cognition and behaviour. You will work with humans and products in different contexts and study the way in which product properties affect, for example, sensory perception. The study always keeps a link to the application of this knowledge in the fields of human health and the design, production and consumption of attractive healthy foods.

Many of our graduates begin working as researchers or PhD students. Another group becomes advisors, trainers or take up other jobs in the private sector. Katie Peck is Course Leader and Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics. She is a Registered Dietitian and is a Senior Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. After practising as a registered dietitian in the NHS working across acute and primary care with a specific interest in vulnerable communities, Katie joined our University. Katie has held a number of professional and leadership roles within health and social care practice and education. Katie has a particular interest in the pre-registration education of dietitians and their professional development across academic and practice settings, and is currently undertaking a professional doctorate.
