Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Adult Learning

Do you want to develop your knowledge and expertise in adult education? If so, this specialisation is for you. It focuses on ways to lead and develop communities of learners and their learning - in workplaces, communities and in local, global and virtual spaces. It offers ideas and approaches to enable participation and learning, through formal and non-formal means, and expand and extend practice and skill development in communities.

Through engagement with contemporary theories, approaches and concepts around lifelong learning and participation, you will identify local and global trends and practices around adult education. You will develop a repertoire of strategies to design engaging learning activities for adults.

You will explore how socially inclusive communities are developed and through practical case studies gain an appreciation of the transformative power of education in promoting community inclusion in global settings. You will learn how experiential learning and transformative approaches to teaching and learning can be used in community contexts to address core social issues such as poverty, racism and crime.

Graduates of this specialisation will be well positioned to manage, deliver and administer learning in workplaces, communities, tertiary and vocational sectors.

Digital learning

Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Digital Learning

Do you want to learn how to adapt digital technologies effectively in teaching and learning across school, tertiary, workplace and community settings? This specialisation engages with the key issues and debates relating to digital technology in education and the application of effective educational technology practices for learning.

It is suited to professionals across school, tertiary, workplace and community settings, who are grappling with how best to design, facilitate and assess the use of digital technologies in teaching and learning.

You will explore current and emerging trends in digital technologies being used in education and develop your understanding of the social, political, economic, cultural and historical issues surrounding their adoption. Your expert practice will develop through engagement with contemporary theories, models and practical strategies for understanding digital technology in education and society. Key issues such as identity, cyber safety, globalisation, equity and emerging forms of social practice will be examined.

Early childhood education

Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education

If you want to develop your expertise and advance your career in early childhood education, then this specialisation is for you. It develops the expert practice of early childhood educators, leaders, policy makers and others interested in advancing their understanding of young children's learning, addressing the emerging need in global economies to build capacity of professionals in the early childhood sector.

This specialisation focuses on leadership practices and policy development within educational contexts. It is suited to those who are interested in leading educational initiatives and institutions and extending their knowledge of how to lead, manage and administer capable educational organisations.

You will explore the concept and characteristics of a capable organisation, and evaluate factors that contribute to maintaining and sustaining capable organisations including human intellect, knowledge, values, emotion, learning and organisational culture and climate.

As a result you will acquire a suite of effective leadership strategies for capability building and develop your understanding of how organisations build organisational resilience when confronted with change.

This course provides a route into teaching in the post-compulsory education and training (PCET) sector, which includes vocational training, sixth form colleges and adult education.

Course overview

The PGCE (PCET) is a professional teacher education programme that will qualify you to teach in the post-compulsory education and training sector which includes sixth form colleges, further education colleges, vocational training and adult education.

The PGCE (PCET) is popular with graduates whose degree subjects are not widely taught in secondary schools, such as sports science, health and social care, psychology and dance. Our course equips you to educate adults and young people, sharing your knowledge and helping others fulfil their potential.

The full-time pre-service PGCE (PCET) is a robust, stable and popular provision with a great reputation. The programme benefits from its direct link to SUNCETT, one of the only 10 Centres for Excellence in this Sector. The programme is directly informed by both the national and international education research and development work of the team.

This pre-service course is for graduates who don’t have previous experience of teaching. If you are already employed in the PCET sector, we also offer an in-service part-time PGCE (PCET). The University, through its dedicated Placement Office, will help to arrange a minimum of 100-hours teaching practice placement in the Learning and Skills sector. This is a valuable opportunity to design, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning in the sector, under the guidance of a mentor in your subject specialist area.

Please note you will be expected to pay travel and subsistence costs relating to placements.

According to the 2015 Ofsted inspection, “the training of good-quality Further Education and skills teachers enables them to make a valued contribution to the colleges and settings in which they work”.

For some English-pathway students, bursaries may be available. Bursaries are reviewed by the government on an annual basis.

Teaching and assessment

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, seminars, tutorials, directed learning and group work, as well as a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice placement. In each module, we encourage you to reflect upon your initial and continuing professional development.

The programme is led by a highly qualified team who are research active and lead on a number of national sector research projects. According to the Ofsted (2015) report, “in university-based training, trainees benefit from highly qualified research leaders in further education who enable trainees to focus on academic rigour to improve the practice of teaching”.

On successful completion of the course you will have a PGCE PCET, the full award for teaching in the post-compulsory education and training sector. This course consists of three modules:

- Professionalism in the Lifelong Learning Sector
You will have the opportunity to examine in depth the context of professional practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector and to relate it to your own values and experience. You will consider the historical backgrounds of the sector and how these, along with recent initiatives, have shaped current understandings of professional identity and practice. You will examine the pressures for professional status and recognition for teachers in the sector, the drives for regulation and subsequent deregulation.

You will be encouraged to engage with a range of critical theoretical perspectives which will enable you to interrogate ideologies which operate through the discourse of 'professionalism' and to develop your own viewpoint.

The module comes together around two interlinked questions:
1. What is a professional identity?
2. How is this related to practice and the disciplinary regimes which shape the activity and subjectivity of the practitioner?

- Pedagogy in the Lifelong Learning Sector
You will focus on pedagogy in the FE context with the aim of expanding the repertoire of approaches to teaching and learning for FE professionals. This is informed by a range of theories of learning and models of teaching. You will explore key issues and challenges raised by the complex and fast changing environment of FE.

For example:
- Definitions of pedagogy and its role in effective teaching and learning with comparisons of different international approaches to pedagogical approaches.
- The importance of 'knowledge' in pedagogical practice
- A critical analysis of the way that theories of learning - behaviorist, cognitivist, constructivist and humanist inform pedagogical choice and practice.
- A critical analysis of a range of models of learning and their appropriateness to the FE context including experiential, inductive and problem based.
- Consideration of the theory of analogy and its place in FE teaching and learning.
- The role of technology in changing pedagogical approaches.
- The academic divide, vocational pedagogy and communities of practice and changing localities for pedagogy.

- Investigating practice
You will have an opportunity to develop an inquiry related to your own practice which can be assessed through either a report or a portfolio of work. This might include the development of pedagogical approaches or curriculum materials, or investigations into the achievement levels or opportunities provided for particular groups of learners. It could also include the development of professional practice through shadowing others or engaging in collaborative work across organisations. The syllabus will be determined by the focus of the inquiries selected by yourself adopting a 'learning set' approach.

The MA Education is designed to meet the needs of teachers, lecturers and trainers who are keen to extend and enhance their professional qualifications and expertise. It is a highly flexible programme enabling education practitioners to study on-site at the university as well as in the workplace. Taught modules can be combined with flexible and negotiated modules to accredit a wide range of professional knowledge and development.

Please note that completion of this course does not lead to qualified teacher status (QTS).

KEY FACTS
• Intended for those working in all education sectors, including early years; primary; secondary; further education; and higher education; the MA Education is also relevant to those in work-based training environments or those with a general interest in education.
• The programme is open to those without a Bachelor’s degree providing you have relevant professional experience.

ASSESSMENT

Some modules offer a choice of assessment methods, including a written account, a portfolio plus a written account and the opportunity to develop materials to disseminate findings.

Degree Information

Students gain understanding of the context for the emergence of lifelong learning, as well as its incorporation into policies for educational and professional development. They are also able to critically analyse adult learning policy at the national and organisational levels, and acquire the tools to analyse and plan their own professional development and that of others in their organisation.

The MA was adapted from the highly regarded London-based MA in Lifelong Learning to meet the needs of policy makers, researchers, managers, trainers, and others involved in the development of Continuing Education and Training (CET) in Singapore. It plays an important role in the building of research capacity and capability in CET, and forms part of the range of qualifications available to adult educators and others working in CET in Singapore.

In response to student interest, the MA will from 2015/16 include modules on leading and innovating in professional development, and analysing adult education policy and practice.

The PGCE PCET is aimed at graduates who want to teach in their degree subject or graduates with a further qualification in the subject area in which they aim to teach. They will also be teaching or actively seeking teaching in the post-compulsory sector of education and training. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

The PCE PCET is aimed at students with a Level 3 qualification (NVQ3, OCN 3, A Level equivalence) preferably in the subject they are teaching or want to teach. The programme is for students who have experience in their subject areas and who wish to further their experience by teaching in the PCET or lifelong learning sector. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

Graduate and non-graduate entrants will follow the same learning pattern but, in compliance with the requirements of QAA, be taught at the differentiated levels for undergraduate study in Year 2.

- Prepare to Teach
The Preparing to teach 10 week taster course is for students with a Level 3 qualification who do not wish to undertake a two-year programme of study but who want to teach. The Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) sector is an area of growing importance in a world of rapidly evolving economic and social change. As individuals face the need to upgrade their skills in order to meet the requires on the world of work, educators in the Post 16 sector have a key role to play in helping them to achieve their learning goals

The Cardiff Met PCET programmes have been devised to introduce you to teaching in the post compulsory education and training (PCET) sector including tertiary, further and higher education, adult and community education, vocational and 14- 19 education as well as training in the private sector or work-based learning environments. These two-year part time programmes will engage you in both academic and practical assignments.

The ethos of the programme is predicated upon student-centred learning which includes the interchange ability of staff/student roles, the pooling of intellectual resources and experiences and the structured opportunities for skills-sharing.

The general aim of the programmes is to produce teachers or trainers who can demonstrate competence across the range of roles and tasks related to the design, delivery, management and evaluation of learning. Students will leave the programme equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge that underpin the performance of those tasks expected of the professional educator or trainer in the post-compulsory sector.

The programme aims to provide a high quality and professionally appropriate experience that offers the opportunity for students to develop their abilities to plan and undertake projects related to practice; further to link their practice to theory in a critical and evaluative way. Learning & Teaching

The programme team recognises that adult learners bring with them experiences which can be used as a resource for learning. Consequently formal lectures are not a feature of this programme. We expect all sessions to involve students actively participating in their learning.

The overall emphasis will be on working together and effectively utilising the experiences and skills that the individual learners bring to the group. This student-centred approach allows students to take responsibility for their own learning. Tutors are seen as facilitators of learning, providing resources, supporting, stimulating and challenging where appropriate.

To this end the teaching methods on the programme will include:

Input from tutors. These can be useful in providing new or up-to-date information to larger groups provided there is an ongoing opportunity for questioning and participation. They will be used sparingly on the programme to generate interest in new subjects and provide information for future discussion, analysis and evaluation.

Small group work. This will be one of the key strategies utilised. The major aim of these activities will be to develop skills relating to thinking, discussion and the presentation of information. Students will be able to practise their communication skills, listen to other group members, support weaker peers and observe group dynamics in action. They will have extensive opportunities to develop their presentation skills in a safe environment and learn how to give encouraging and constructive feedback to their colleagues. Methods utilised will include:
- Ice-breaking exercises
- Team-building exercises
- Workshops
- Buzz groups and brainstorming
- Simulations
- Case-studies
- Role plays

Seminars. These will be led by programme members and will allow them to further develop their presentation and delivery skills. They will be designed to allow group members to explore issues relating to their own institutional settings or their academic specialisms.

Individualised learning periods. Directed self-study allowing programme members to learn at their own pace outside the framework of class activities. The number of hours of self-study varies for each student and it would be worth discussing this with your personal tutor at the start of the year.

Tutorials. Group members will meet with their individual tutors at regular intervals to reflect on their learning experiences, share concerns and problems and set learning targets.

Moodle is Cardiff Met’s virtual learning environment and you will be able to use this to access materials/information relating to the programme from a networked PC. Moodle will also be used for academic and social online discussion forum, blog discussions and for online learning resources.

Assessment

You may be assessed by a combination of assessment methods appropriate to the PGCE and PCE programme levels and may include:
- Written assessments (WRIT) such as reports, self-reflections, analytical documents, case studies, online blogs, peer assessments, essays;

- Presentations (PRES) and Microteaching sessions which may be individual and/or group; seminar; (non)-interactive; with audience;

- Practicals (PRAC) such as individual and/or group; coaching; mentoring;; performance;

- Portfolio (PORT) that includes a collection of evidence, frequently including a contextual statement; poster; website;

- Placements (PLAC) such as a fieldwork placement; school placement; experiencing the world of work.

The programme is continually assessed through module assignments and two hundred hours of supervised teaching experience to include 130 hours of direct teaching over the two years.

Students will undertake four observed teaching hours in Year 1 and four in Year 2. Each of these will require written preparation and also a self-evaluation report following the observation.

Employability & Careers

The PGCE and PCE PCET will qualify you to teach in Further and Higher Education, youth, adult and community education, 14- 19 sector, work-based education, training in HMForces, prison, industry and commercial training departments.

Students who have completed this course have gone on to part or full-time teaching in the post compulsory sector of education and training, usually teaching their subject and other subject related areas. All graduates leaving the course are signposted to Cardiff County Council and Cardiff Met’s Widening Access department as potential adult education tutors for outreach and summer school activities. .Some students are offered teaching opportunities by their mentor once they have graduated.

​Progression Routes:
Non-graduates successfully completing the PCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4 and 5. Students would be able to progress on to a degree programme in their specific subject discipline.

Graduates completing the PGCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4, 5 and 6. Students can then progress onto Masters programmes within their particular subject area.

Areas of Study

There are two pathways available within the MA in Career Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education: Route A and Route B. It is not necessary to finalise preferred route at the time of application as this can be confirmed later. Both pathways enable direct entry to the MA.

Route A
Route A includes the 3 x core 20 credit modules (including the Research Project module), a choice of 3 x 20 credit optional modules from the table below and a 60 credit module completed via a 15,000 word Dissertation (A). There is significant support available through the extended course team consisting of Phil McCash (Warwick), Gill Frigerio (Warwick), Sharon West (Warwick), Linda Byrne (AGCAS), Jan Cornish (AGCAS) and a large group of highly experienced AGCAS Trainers and Mentors. Dissertation students are allocated a dissertation supervisor. Supervision is provided to assist you with undertaking an initial literature review, constructing research questions and designing a methodology. There is considerable experience available within the course team and most topics connected with higher education careers work can be pursued.

COURSE STRUCTURE

In your third trimester you will research and write your Dissertation (60 credits) on a topic relevant to your award. If you take the low residency option, the face-to-face teaching of all modules will take place during two 2-week intensive blocks (typically in September and February).

MODULES

Trimester 1

In your first trimester you will study two compulsory core modules totalling 60 credits.

Core Module:
Education: Economics, Politics and Society (30 credits) explores how education can be understood in a complex and globalised world where it is seen by many governments as a significant factor in economic growth and competition. You will learn how to question the policies and organisations involved in defining the purposes, content and outcomes of education.

Award Core Module:
Early Childhood Care and Education (30 credits) updates and extends your critical knowledge and understanding of how young children develop and create a foundation for all future learning and will develop your skills and expertise in creating high quality learning environments.

Trimester 2

In your second trimester you will study one compulsory core module, and two 15 credit elective modules, one of which may be a shared elective from another MA award. This will total 60 credits.

Compulsory Core Module:
Social Science Research (30 credits) sets educational research within the broader context of the social sciences and introduces a range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and methods from which you can select the most appropriate for your dissertation.

Elective Modules:
Outdoor Play and Learning (option 15 credits) supports you in leading and researching young children's learning and development in the context of outdoor play and the Forest School experience.
Including Vulnerable Learners (option 15 credits) explores the wider issues of vulnerability and the concept of ‘inclusion’, particularly noting the socio-cultural influences that might impact on children and young people’s engagement with education systems.
Leadership and Team Work (shared option 15 credits) extends your critical knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories of leadership in early childhood settings and will develop your skills and expertise in a range of leadership practices and effective ways of leading a pedagogical team.

Trimester 3

In your third trimester you will research and write your Dissertation (60 credits) on a topic relevant to your award.

Dissertation (60 credits) enables you to study and research an aspect of education theory, policy or practice in depth, guided by an expert to arrive at your own synthesis of a topic to take forward into your career.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

All modules are taught through lectures, small-group seminars and individual tutorials. For the campus-based mode of study, some lectures and seminars will take place during the day, whilst others may be in the evening or at weekends. For low-residency students the teaching will be concentrated into two 2-week blocks (typically around 6 hours per day). The course also makes extensive use of online teaching, particularly for the low-residency and online only modes. This will include a combination of individual and shared learning using the Bath Spa University virtual learning environment.

STAFF / TUTORS

Dr Janet Rose: Senior Lecturer and the Early Years Award Leader.
Janet has over 20 years’ experience of working in this specialist area of education both in the UK and internationally. Her publications include The Role of the Adult in Early Years Settings (2012) and her research interests currently focus on supporting children’s well-being and resilience.

Several colleagues co-teach on various modules and are all early years specialists with particular expertise in a range of aspects of early years provision such as symbolic representation (Lone Hattingh), social and emotional development (Hilary Smith) and leadership (Sara Layan).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Governments worldwide are now making early years education a priority and increasing their investment in early years provision. Therefore, you will acquire specialist expertise in an area of education that is rapidly expanding and opening up new career opportunities. You will be equipped to take on a leadership position or an advisory role in supporting the development of early years provision in your own country.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

There are no written exams on this course; each module is assessed through coursework. This typically involves an essay of 2,500 words for a 15 credit module or 5,000 words for a 30 credit module. For some modules assessment may be by verbal presentation or online activity. The dissertation is 15,000 – 20,000 words and focuses on an area agreed with a specialist tutor, who will offer guidance on structure and academic writing.

This popular programme provides student teachers with specialist training in the teaching of physical education so that they become confident and competent practitioners in a secondary school setting. It aims to develop teachers who are able to work effectively across a range of pedagogical areas and practical activities to provide them with essential skills and understanding in this important area of education.

Within school-based and university environments trainees will be supported in developing a range of transferable skills related to teaching, learning and assessment; understanding of inclusive learning environments that respond to the diverse needs of pupils; the ability to work with other adults in a variety of learning environments and an understanding of relevant professional, statutory and regulatory bodies and employers.

Concepts such as equity and inclusivity of practice are promoted as being important in nurturing the potential of children regardless of age, (dis)ability, gender or ethnic background. Such concepts, together with the notion of teaching children, holistically, through the medium of physical activity are important features of the programme.

- To develop understanding of how to bring about learning in physical education with secondary-age pupils

- To widen knowledge and understanding across the field of physical education

- To become confident, competent and effective teachers of physical education in schools
