The Master's degree in Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management aims to equip health and social care professionals and others, including new and recent graduates who contribute or plan to contribute to the strategically important area of long term and chronic conditions management.

The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).
Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.
Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.
People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.
This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). These need to be optimally embedded with systems which actively promote and support sustainable stakeholder collaboration and patient empowerment.

The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.
This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.
The Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management programme offer students the flexibility to choose a “bespoke” path that enables them to develop personally and professionally relevant qualifications with a range of optional modules on offer.
Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students can ‘drill down’ within their specialist area, for example, health promotion, leadership or cancer rehabilitation.
Current and previous Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have roles as nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, Occupational Therapists, chiropractors, physicians and health science graduates.
Many have secured new roles in healthcare whilst studying or on completion of the programme, and others have or are considering progressing to doctoral level studies or further professional qualifications.
Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have presented work at national conferences and have published work or are in the process of doing so.
Programme Director, Dr Tessa Watts, has expertise in supporting self-management and has completed the Health Foundation’s Advanced Development Programme for Practitioners. Tessa is also co-chair of the Chronic Conditions Research group in the College of Human and Health Sciences at Swansea University, and publishes primarily in the areas of cancer, palliative care and healthcare education.
Dr Sherrill Snelgrove has expertise in chronic pain management. Sherrill is co-chair of the Chronic Conditions Research group, alongside Tessa, and publishes in the area of chronic pain management.
Dr Jaynie Rance is a chartered Health Psychologist with particular expertise in lifestyle behaviour change.

This Sustainable and Efficient Food Production postgraduate course centres on increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact within the extensive pasture-based production sector. The programme provides flexible, accessible, postgraduate level training for people employed in the agri-food sector. Training comprises distance learning modules and work-based research projects. These are accessible as CPD or as credit-bearing units, which can be built towards a range of postgraduate qualifications.
Taught by experts at both Aberystwyth University (AU) and Bangor University (BU), the Sustainable and Efficient Food Production course offers you a highly vocational option. In the most recent joint submission to the Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014), the department was placed in the top 10 universities in the UK for research intensity and 78% of our research was world-leading or internationally excellent.

Each topic comprises a 12-14 week distance learning module worth 20 credits which can be taken for your own continuing professional development or interest; or built towards a postgraduate qualification. The research elements of our qualifications are carried out in your work place with regular academic supervision. The training is web-based which means that as long as you have access to a reasonable broadband connection (i.e. are able to stream videos such as on YouTube), you can study where and when best suits you. Learning material includes podcast lectures, e-group projects, guided reading, interactive workbooks and discussion forums, as well as assignments and e-tutorials. By signing a re-registration form each year you will have access to e-journals and library resources for the full five years.
There are no exams within this programme. Taught modules are assessed via course work and forum discussion.
This scheme aims to facilitate knowledge exchange between academia and industry. Students must complete three taught modules including research methods and a 120 credit work-based dissertation / research thesis (approximately 20,000 words in length).
While the primary academic focus is on the completion of an advanced piece of research, the collaborative route provided by a work-based research project provides an ideal opportunity to embed new knowledge in the work place and ensure that research is relevant to industry. As such, it is crucial that a student’s employer is supportive of both their research aims and the time commitment that the proposed research will involve. Self-employed students should aim to undertake research which will be closely aligned to their business.
Students may build on the MRes to work towards a Professional Doctorate.
An MRes can be completed in 2-5 years but we would expect most students to spend 1 year on their taught modules and 2 years on their work based dissertation. 12 or 14 weeks for one module by distance learning. Three intakes per year (January, May, September).

This course provides you with the opportunity to develop the research skills you need to undertake clinical research within the field of health. The course focuses on preparing you to undertake clinically relevant research and develop your knowledge, understanding and practical skills within a range of primary and secondary research methodologies. You also have the opportunity to develop skills in project management, research governance and writing for publication and to gain an in-depth understanding of the context of health-related research and policy.

A flexible approach to course delivery has been taken. You can choose to study either by attending taught sessions, through distance learning or through flexible learning (a combination of both attendance and distance).
You study a number of modules throughout the course which aim to develop your knowledge, understanding and practical skills in quantitative, qualitative and systematic review methodologies and data analysis techniques. You also gain an in-depth understanding of the context of health-related research, managing a research project, research governance, applying for ethics and writing for publication. Towards the end of the course you have the opportunity to plan, manage and undertake a research study in an area of interest to you and to write this up for publication.

How you learn
A range of teaching and learning methods is used throughout the course. You can choose to study either by attending taught classes or through distance learning or through flexible learning (a combination of attendance and distance). Learning and teaching methods for taught classes include key lectures, seminars, group discussions, computer lab work to develop skills in searching for literature and analysing data, and a range of practical activities to develop your practical research skills. Teaching and learning methods for distance learning are supported through the use of a virtual learning environment, where learning materials are available in a range of formats such as written materials, narrated power points, and practical activities to develop your searching, data analysis and practical research skills. Electronic discussion forums also support your learning. Personal development planning is also a key aspect of the course to support your learning.
Supervision and support are provided throughout the course by the personal tutor, course leader, module leaders and dissertation supervisor.
How you are assessed
A range of assessment methods are used throughout the course. These include formative assessment, written essay, written report, proposal, oral and poster presentation, written project and an article for publication.
The course enhances your career progression by developing your ability to undertake clinically relevant research and will prepare you for either a clinical research career or a PhD.
