Our two-year Research Master's programme focuses on the art and architecture of the Low Countries (present-day Netherlands and Belgium), and spans the period from the late Middle Ages to the present day. You will study Netherlandish art and architecture, taking into account their international context. We invite you to critically reflect on the production of art and architecture, and the role of patronage; investigate the reasons why so many artist went abroad and how they became agents in the international diffusion of styles and themes; and explore how artworks testify to the Dutch encounter with the wider world from the Golden Age to the present day. Furthermore, the programme will acquaint you with the innovative approaches of global, technical, and digital art history.
You will also have the opportunity to study other specific subjects that align with your own personal interests. Our close ties with major art museums and other cultural organisations both in the Netherlands and abroad mean that the academic and practical work are closely linked.
Dutch students will spend a semester in a major art museum abroad while students from other countries intern at a major Dutch or Flemish art museum. You may also wish to study at another university for one semester. To date, our students have undertaken placements at approximately twenty institutions in eight different countries. Whatever your choice, your internship or study abroad semester will be tailored to your own individual interests.
The Research Master's programme in Art History of the Low Countries will prepare you for further research by specialising in the art and architecture of the Low Countries. Many graduates have gone on to undertake PhD programmes in the Netherlands or abroad.
Graduates can also apply for curatorial positions requiring specialist skills in art history at museums and research institutes. A number of our graduates are currently employed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, the Municipal Museum of The Hague, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Printroom of the Royal Library in Brussels, the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, and in the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague.

The Liberal Arts (Latin liberalis, free, and ars, art or principled practice) can claim to be the oldest programme of higher education in Western history. In medieval culture this became formalised as the trivium, with the quadrivium of arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Essentially, these subjects laid out the uniform laws of what could be known and achieved in the natural universe. These broad areas of enquiry are better known now as philosophy, the humanities, social science, natural science, and the fine arts. This programme offers the possibility to explore ideas across the wide range of these intellectual areas. You decide the content of your studies through discussion with tutor(s) working within the broad range of intellectual areas which constitute Liberal Arts at Winchester.
The programme offers training in postgraduate employability skills and enables those in mid-career to return to higher education around your own interests. It also provides rigorous preparation if you wish to pursue a career in research in higher education or intend to take a PhD.

Travel agencies, governments, heritage centers and publishers are increasingly looking for academically trained professionals who can creatively and critically reflect on tourism as a cultural phenomenon, and who are capable of nourishing the cultural interests of tourists with enticing ideas and well-informed stories.
There is a growing need, both among young adults and older generations, to include new types of travel experiences in mass tourism. For example a journey in the footsteps of Harry Potter or Marcel Proust. Or think of battlefield tourism or 'dark tourism' to former Nazi camps.

In Philosophy of Humanity and Culture we go into the topics dealt with in classics from the European tradition. Topics we will be discussing include the difference between ‘nature and ‘culture’, ‘humans’ and ‘animals’, ‘being’ and ‘appearing’, ‘Enlightenment’ and ‘Romanticism’. In this, we put particular emphasis on the importance for our identity of history, religion, art, language and psychology. We also pay attention to the role of memory, gender, the relationship between literature, film and philosophy, war, art and remembrance, and that between religion and secularization. Together, these all contribute to our understanding of human existence, culture and society.
In modern times, from the seventeenth century onwards, widely differing answers have been given to the questions raised in classic works. Answers that resonate in present-day philosophical, scientific, religious and political debates. As a philosopher, you are not easily satisfied with answers given.
