The Master of Science in Leisure and Sport Management helps prepare individuals to lead leisure and sport organizations, to support the expansion of the leisure and sport industries, and to conduct research that advances the body of knowledge in these disciplines. Students choose between two concentrations: Recreation and Leisure Services or Sport Industry. Master's students complete either a thesis or a professional project/internship. An advanced doctoral degree with a specialization in Leisure Studies is also offered by the Department of Health and Human Performance. A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships, research assistantships, scholarships, and doctoral fellowships are available in addition to other forms of financial aid.

A Master of Science (M.S.) in Leisure and Sport Management, with concentrations in Sport Industry and in Recreation and Leisure Services, is one of three master’s degrees available from MTSU’s Department of Health and Human Performance.

The Leisure, Tourism and Environment programme is one of the few leisure and tourism related studies worldwide that does not focus on management or marketing. It is an academic Master programme involving theories from many different disciplines; it critically reflects on current tourism practices and opens debates about innovative ideas. This combination together with a very international group of students and teachers is unique in the world.

Programme summary

Increasing numbers of people around the world are spending a growing proportion of their leisure time and money on leisure and tourism related activities. The economic and social impact of leisure and tourism services on the environment has grown dramatically in recent years, and this is expected to continue. What motivates tourists to visit remote destinations? How does this travel affect local cultures and economies? And how do issues on sustainability, authenticity, identity and commercialisation fit into the picture? During the two-year MSc programme Leisure, Tourism and Environment you learn the reasoning behind the transformation of certain locations into leisure and tourism environments. The programme pays special attention to concepts such as landscape, space, place, locality, authenticity and sustainability.

Fast growing and dynamic field
By joining the MSc Leisure, Tourism and Environment programme, you study the underlying issues of the fast growing leisure and tourism industry. You look at leisure and tourism from a historical and philosophical perspective, learning about social and cultural theory and how to apply these using advanced research methods and analysis techniques. The PGCE Sport, Leisure and Tourism (14-19)aims to support you to make the transition from subject expert to teacher/lecturer in the areas you are interested in.

The course will develop your practical skills and knowledge to enable you to relate this to the wider educational responsibilities of being a teacher/lecturer. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools and to provide a strong foundation for working in the lifelong learning sector, especially further education.

On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.

• Professional Studies
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.

• Enhanced Studies
The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Suitability

This course is perfect for those who already have a first degree and potentially some professional experience in either sports, leisure, travel or tourism, and are looking to take their first steps into teaching.

This course might also appeal to those with teaching support experience or even teachers from other subject areas.

The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Format

Your University-based sessions are taught through a mix of seminars, workshops and peer teaching as there is an emphasis placed upon informed discussion and debate and knowledge exchange.

During your two Professional Practice teaching placements you will be working closely with and supported by teachers/lecturers and assigned to a designated Curriculum Mentor to oversee your developmental needs and progress.

Assessment

Your assessment on PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University is through formative methods with a final grading completed at the end of the PGCE.

Each of your three university-based modules (Curriculum, Professional and Enhanced Studies) are assessed through a 4,000 word small-scale research piece and with each of these modules offering you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits it is possible to gain a total of 60 Masters level credits through these three modules.

Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day to day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your university tutor.

There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.

What can I do next?

Having successfully completed the PGCE and been recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) you have the opportunity to work in various roles in different education contexts and sectors including physical education teaching, college lecturer in sports, public services and travel and tourism. Travel students have also been able to accept roles in geography and business.

In addition to being employed in an organisation and capacity which you find exciting there is also the opportunity for you to continue your studies in education through participating in Masters level programmes.

Should you decide to continue with your studies after the PGCE remember that the PGCE here at Canterbury Christ Church University offers you the opportunity to gain up to a total of 60 Masters Level credits which count towards a full Masters and can be taken onto other universities.

Employment

As a student specialising in Israeli Studies, you will gain competency in language skills and intercultural awareness and understanding. Familiarity with the region will have been developed through a combination of the study of language, literature and culture (which can include literature, film, music, art and religion) of various parts of the Middle East.

Graduates leave SOAS not only with linguistic and cultural expertise, but also with a portfolio of widely transferable skills which employers seek in many professional and management careers in both business and the public sector. These include written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to research, amass and order information from a variety of sources.

Faculty of Languages and Cultures

Six of the academic departments are devoted to teaching and research in the languages, literatures and cultures of Africa, China and Inner Asia, Japan and Korea, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia, with the seventh teaching and conducting research in Linguistics. The Language Centre caters to the needs of non-degree students and governmental and non-governmental organisations. It maintains a huge portfolio of courses, including year-long diploma programmes, weekly evening classes in about 40 different African and Asian languages, and tailored intensive one-to-one courses. The Language Centre also offers courses in French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Their teaching is in three main areas:
- language competence acquisition;

- textual and cultural studies - both comparative and language-specific, and covering not only 'literature' in a strict sense but also visual media, performance, folklore, translation etc.;

- language studies with linguistics at its core - including the prestigious Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project.

With regions and countries fighting for land, water, and resources, how can we help people recover from conflict and war? How can we transform the right to food, water, and a clean environment into reality? These are just a few examples of issues relating to development studies.

The International Development Studies programme allows you to develop a critical understanding of development theories. You will learn to plan and conduct research. You acquire the skills to translate your finding into development policies, intervention strategies and institutional innovations. You will learn to include the diverging views of various stakeholders and to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Programme summary

This programme deals with worldwide processes of development and change related to livelihoods, agro-food networks and the environment in a dynamic international context. Special attention is given to exclusion processes, equity, unequal access to resources and sustainability. Social, economic, political, technological, and environmental change is studied from various perspectives and at different levels. You will develop a critical understanding of recent development theories, learn to plan and conduct research, and acquire skills to translate research findings into recommendations for policies and intervention strategies. You will learn to include the diverging views of various stakeholders and to work in multidisciplinary teams. Depending on your previous education, you can follow one of the specialisations. .

Specialisations

Students can choose one of the following three specialisations after consultation with the study advisor. The selected specialisation mainly depends on your academic background.

Sociology of Development
This specialisation focuses on social transformation processes, especially the local consequences of globalisation and environmental change, and the way people cope with uncertain circumstances. Themes studied include natural resource degradation, refugees, migration, post-disaster reconstruction, social unrest, poverty, and lack of access to resources crucial to the livelihoods of people. This specialisation applies sociological and anthropological perspectives to development problems with special attention given to understanding the differing interests and views of numerous actors. You can choose a major in Disaster Studies, Environmental Policy, Sociology of Development and Change, or Rural Sociology.

Economics of Development
The central themes in this specialisation are the role of agriculture in development, food security and the global food crisis, regional economic issues, sustainable use of natural resources, rural-urban income disparities, and issues related to poverty and the role of institutions. These themes are examined from a microeconomic perspective to gain insight into the behaviour of individuals and institutions, as well as from a macroeconomic perspective to obtain insight into development processes at regional and national levels. You can major in Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy, Development Economics, Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, or Regional Economics.

Communication, Technology and Policy
In this specialisation, social transformation and sustainable development are examined with a specific focus on communication, technological innovations, and policy processes. An important theme is how technologies and policies are developed in the interaction between various parties (e.g. governments, social organisations, and citizens) and the role of communication in these processes. Another theme is the relationship between technological change (in the agricultural and food sectors), institutional processes and social transformation. You can choose a major in Knowledge, Technology and Innovation, Law and Governance, or Strategic Communication.

Your future career

Graduates are employed in various (inter-) national organisations as a programme/ project coordinator, trainer, consultant, advisor, policymaker or researcher. You could work, for example, as policymaker in a government or semi-governmental institute, as programme coordinator or advisor in an international (non-)governmentalorganisation or (consultancy) company, or as researcher and/or teacher at a university or research institute. Euroculture is an interdisciplinary master's specialization of excellence, focusing on the key challenges of contemporary Europe. Its strengths are a job-oriented approach and training in substantive research skills.

The master's specialization Euroculture is a unique, interdisciplinary and international programme consisting of 4 semesters (120 ECTS) and offered by a Consortium (8 European and 4 non-European universities). The status “Erasmus Mundus Master of Excellence" was granted to the programme by the European Commission in 2005 and again in 2011 thereby confirming the programme's outstanding quality. In 2015, Euroculture was, for the 4th time in a row, considered to be a "top" Master Programme by Keuzegids, an independent Dutch guide ranking university Programmes. In fact, the Keuzegids considered the Euroculture programme to be the best European Studies Master programme in the Netherlands.

The mission of the programme is to provide graduates with the following:

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The English Literature MA programme will prepare graduates to undertake a PhD programme in the relevant field.

It will also provide students with the transferable skills of critical thinking, analysis, communication, and textuality that are attractive to a wide range of employers, from the cultural industries to marketing and advertising to tourism and leisure to the civil service and public/private partnerships.

Devoted to the requirements and complexities of textual analysis and critical reading, the programme also provides advanced understanding of the contexts, theoretical paradigms, methodologies and modes of interpretation that are vital in contemporary literary studies.

The main aims are to:
-Acquire sound knowledge of the major principles of literary criticism
-Develop the critical language and terminology to carry out in-depth analyses of literary texts from across the diverse range of periods, areas, and approaches to the study of English literature
-Reflect on their own practice as literary critics

The programme will help students to apply scholarly approaches to critically evaluate the major schools of literary criticism and literary theory in light of current and the possibilities of future development.

As a Master’s level programme, it also aims to instil in students the capacity for carrying out independent research in an area of literary studies.

Study on a course designed for social sciences graduates who plan to work or complete research in sociology, social policy, and governmental and commercial organisations. The fundamental research methodologies you learn give you the skills to develop or start your career as a researcher in these areas. The MSc (Kinesiology) program commenced in 2005. In its short history, 10 master’s students have continued on to doctoral programs. Graduate students have authored or co-authored approximately 20 peer-reviewed articles in that period. The laboratories are well equipped with 3 EMG acquisition systems, 2 metabolic carts, hypoxic air generator, force platform, muscle stimulation unit, immersion tank, accelerometers, lumbar motion monitor, and a variety of strain gauges among other equipment.

Memorial conferred its first degree in Master of Physical Education (MPE) in 1975. Beginning September 2008, the MPE program may be completed entirely online via distance education. The MPE program provides professional training to leaders in the fields of physical education, sport, and recreation. While some students concentrate in the areas of administration, curriculum, and supervision in physical education, others opt for studies in related professional areas. These areas include parks and recreation, sport and leisure administration and management, and sport science.

Students completing their MPE can focus on administration, curriculum, or supervision, while those completing their MSc can focus on exercise and work physiology, biomechanics/ergonomics, sport psychology, and socio-cultural studies of physical activity and health. Seven new courses have been introduced that reflect the present issues in the physical education curriculum. Graduates have moved on to a variety of professions and include university professors, lawyers, engineers, administrators, and teachers. Many graduate students have also gone on to pursue doctoral studies in a number of exciting fields. Graduate programs are offered in both full-time and part-time formats, with a number of different options available to students.

The MSc (Kin) program involves courses and a thesis, and can be completed in two years of full-time study.

The Centre for Research for Health and Wellbeing welcomes expressions of interest in postgraduate research degrees in areas of study related to health and wellbeing. The centre draws together expertise from across the University within an inter-disciplinary framework, and provides a vibrant and fertile environment for postgraduate research studies. We undertake research, evaluation and needs assessment into service user involvement, participation and innovation, 'hard to reach groups' and service improvement, drawing from areas such as sociology, social policy, leisure studies, nursing, physiotherapy, public health and many more.

We offer a number of research routes for those wishing to increase their research experience and develop their academic and professional profile. These include ‘traditional’ postgraduate programmes such as MPhil and PhD, as well as new routes to PhDs such as our PhD by Practice and PhD by Published Work (prospective and retrospective). Alison is an occupational therapist and NHS manager by background. Her research has been funded by a local PCT to develop a working model for world class commissioning. She spends three days a week in the PCT and two days a week in the University developing the academic framework for her studies.

Abdul – Social Policy

Abdul has been exploring questions and issues related to community cohesion. He has worked with members of a local Asian community and explored what some of the buzz-words around community cohesion mean to them. As a local Imam, Abdul is well-connected to the community within which he has undertaken his research and he has been able to gain insights into the experiences of those members of Asian communities that are often excluded from or mistrustful of other research studies.

Bimpe – Health Care

The University, in partnership with NHS Bolton and Bolton Council, is presently building a new Centre for Health and Wellbeing, known as Bolton One. Bolton One will provide a range of services to the people of Bolton, and Bimpe’s research project is focused on how service users’ views can be incorporated into this development. Bimpe has a masters in public health and a strong background of working with local community groups, including those from refugee and asylum seeker communities.

Susan - Physiotherapy

Sue is a clinical lead and consultant physiotherapist and is undertaking a PhD by Practice at the centre. During the course of her career, she has found that physiotherapists encounter patients who have a serious spinal pathology that has previously gone undiagnosed. Sue has worked to develop and identify case material and a schema of ‘red flags’ that can be used by professionals working in clinical settings.

Why this programme

-The programme is aimed at early and mid-career professionals who wish to explore how young people's lives are changing in modern societies and the ways they are affected by the processes of social change.
-You will be taught by researchers in the field of youth and young adults and have experience working with organisations such as the UN, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, UK local and national government and the Scottish Government.
-You will study the contexts and factors which impact on young people's decision-making related to for example education, training, work and leisure.
-The programme also provides a strong basis for further study, focusing on international and UK perspectives of youth.

Programme structure
