The PGCE Sport, Leisure and Tourism (14-19)aims to support you to make the transition from subject expert to teacher/lecturer in the areas you are interested in.

The course will develop your practical skills and knowledge to enable you to relate this to the wider educational responsibilities of being a teacher/lecturer. On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.

• Professional Studies

Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies

This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.

• Enhanced Studies

The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Suitability

This course is perfect for those who already have a first degree and potentially some professional experience in either sports, leisure, travel or tourism, and are looking to take their first steps into teaching.

This course might also appeal to those with teaching support experience or even teachers from other subject areas.

The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Format

Your University-based sessions are taught through a mix of seminars, workshops and peer teaching as there is an emphasis placed upon informed discussion and debate and knowledge exchange.

During your two Professional Practice teaching placements you will be working closely with and supported by teachers/lecturers and assigned to a designated Curriculum Mentor to oversee your developmental needs and progress.

Assessment

Your assessment on PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University is through formative methods with a final grading completed at the end of the PGCE.

Each of your three university-based modules (Curriculum, Professional and Enhanced Studies) are assessed through a 4,000 word small-scale research piece and with each of these modules offering you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits it is possible to gain a total of 60 Masters level credits through these three modules.

Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day to day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your university tutor.

There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.

What can I do next?

Having successfully completed the PGCE and been recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) you have the opportunity to work in various roles in different education contexts and sectors including physical education teaching, college lecturer in sports, public services and travel and tourism. Travel students have also been able to accept roles in geography and business.

In addition to being employed in an organisation and capacity which you find exciting there is also the opportunity for you to continue your studies in education through participating in Masters level programmes.

Should you decide to continue with your studies after the PGCE remember that the PGCE here at Canterbury Christ Church University offers you the opportunity to gain up to a total of 60 Masters Level credits which count towards a full Masters and can be taken onto other universities.

Employment

As a student specialising in Israeli Studies, you will gain competency in language skills and intercultural awareness and understanding. Familiarity with the region will have been developed through a combination of the study of language, literature and culture (which can include literature, film, music, art and religion) of various parts of the Middle East.

Graduates leave SOAS not only with linguistic and cultural expertise, but also with a portfolio of widely transferable skills which employers seek in many professional and management careers in both business and the public sector. Faculty of Languages and Cultures

Six of the academic departments are devoted to teaching and research in the languages, literatures and cultures of Africa, China and Inner Asia, Japan and Korea, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia, with the seventh teaching and conducting research in Linguistics. The Language Centre caters to the needs of non-degree students and governmental and non-governmental organisations. It maintains a huge portfolio of courses, including year-long diploma programmes, weekly evening classes in about 40 different African and Asian languages, and tailored intensive one-to-one courses. The Language Centre also offers courses in French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Their teaching is in three main areas:
- language competence acquisition;

- textual and cultural studies - both comparative and language-specific, and covering not only 'literature' in a strict sense but also visual media, performance, folklore, translation etc.;

- language studies with linguistics at its core - including the prestigious Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project.

MA Exercise and Sport (Sport and Leisure History) provides a focus for research into nineteenth and twentieth century sport and leisure, and is actively engaged in employing all historical approaches, including oral history, biography, and prosopography, to uncover the individual and collective lives of the men and women involved in sporting and leisure activities.

Intellectually challenging and discipline-focused, the MA Exercise and Sport (Sport and Leisure History) programme prepares students for a career in sports history, education and socio-cultural studies at an advanced level.

Taught by leading researchers within the field of sports history, an interdisciplinary perspective is encouraged to explore the past. This programme is highly valued by employers and the wider sport and leisure community with many of our graduates holding senior positions in research, Higher Education, and advisory roles within professional sports clubs, archival collections and museums.

Students will also have access to the Sports and Leisure History Research Archive. This archive contains over 1,000 books, journals and magazines dating back to the early 19th century. Euroculture is an interdisciplinary master's specialization of excellence, focusing on the key challenges of contemporary Europe. Its strengths are a job-oriented approach and training in substantive research skills.

The master's specialization Euroculture is a unique, interdisciplinary and international programme consisting of 4 semesters (120 ECTS) and offered by a Consortium (8 European and 4 non-European universities). The status “Erasmus Mundus Master of Excellence" was granted to the programme by the European Commission in 2005 and again in 2011 thereby confirming the programme's outstanding quality. In 2015, Euroculture was, for the 4th time in a row, considered to be a "top" Master Programme by Keuzegids, an independent Dutch guide ranking university Programmes. In fact, the Keuzegids considered the Euroculture programme to be the best European Studies Master programme in the Netherlands.

Your research skills will be developed via a reflective research portfolio in semester 1. Graduates of the MSc International Sports Management will have distinctive skill sets with the ability to critically discuss the concepts and key functions of international sport management as well as being able to analyse and avaluate strategy, organisational structures and design, plus organisational behaviour and operations in international, European and UK-based sports organisations.

You will be able to critically discuss the management of resources, the marketing of sport products, the strategic direction of sport organisations and the ethical, environmental and legal issues underpinning international sport management.

Graduates of this course are successfully building international careers in organisations including the International Paralympic Committee, FIBA (the International Basketball Federation), UEFA Euro 2016, Triathlon Australia, British Cycling, Pacific Sport, Basketball Bundesliga, British Athletics, Liverpool FC, the German Olympic Sport Confederation, the Rugby Football Union, the Hellenic Volleyball Federation and the Great Run Company.

The Centre for Research for Health and Wellbeing welcomes expressions of interest in postgraduate research degrees in areas of study related to health and wellbeing. The centre draws together expertise from across the University within an inter-disciplinary framework, and provides a vibrant and fertile environment for postgraduate research studies. We undertake research, evaluation and needs assessment into service user involvement, participation and innovation, 'hard to reach groups' and service improvement, drawing from areas such as sociology, social policy, leisure studies, nursing, physiotherapy, public health and many more.

We offer a number of research routes for those wishing to increase their research experience and develop their academic and professional profile. These include ‘traditional’ postgraduate programmes such as MPhil and PhD, as well as new routes to PhDs such as our PhD by Practice and PhD by Published Work (prospective and retrospective). We are also in the process of developing a Professional Doctorate in Health Research.

Alison – Health Services Management

Alison is an occupational therapist and NHS manager by background. Her research has been funded by a local PCT to develop a working model for world class commissioning. She spends three days a week in the PCT and two days a week in the University developing the academic framework for her studies.

Abdul – Social Policy

Abdul has been exploring questions and issues related to community cohesion. He has worked with members of a local Asian community and explored what some of the buzz-words around community cohesion mean to them. As a local Imam, Abdul is well-connected to the community within which he has undertaken his research and he has been able to gain insights into the experiences of those members of Asian communities that are often excluded from or mistrustful of other research studies.

Bimpe – Health Care

The University, in partnership with NHS Bolton and Bolton Council, is presently building a new Centre for Health and Wellbeing, known as Bolton One. Bolton One will provide a range of services to the people of Bolton, and Bimpe’s research project is focused on how service users’ views can be incorporated into this development. Bimpe has a masters in public health and a strong background of working with local community groups, including those from refugee and asylum seeker communities.

Susan - Physiotherapy

Sue is a clinical lead and consultant physiotherapist and is undertaking a PhD by Practice at the centre. During the course of her career, she has found that physiotherapists encounter patients who have a serious spinal pathology that has previously gone undiagnosed. Sue has worked to develop and identify case material and a schema of ‘red flags’ that can be used by professionals working in clinical settings.

Are you fascinated by digital media, especially social media? Would you like to investigate the new media landscape and understand its effects on society? Do you have your sights set on a career in the media world, with an emphasis on digital media and contemporary media practices? If so, Media Culture may be the right choice for you. The programme combines theoretical reflection, research on user practices and basic media skills training. Using an interdisciplinary approach, media studies is integrated with political philosophy, philosophical aesthetics, history and sociology of technology. This ensures that you develop the theoretical, analytical and practical skills that are essential to understanding and adapting to the ever-changing media world, whether you are working in a cultural organisation, a broadcasting company, a commercial business or a governmental organization

Why this programme?

New digital technologies have transformed the ways we share and distribute information, interact with each other and spend our leisure time. Digital media have had a major impact on our engagement with politics and with culture. At the same time, older media such as printed books, radio, television and film are still present and are evolving in complex interrelationships with digital media.

The master's programme in Media Culture combines theoretical reflection on these developments, research on user practices and training in basic media skills. You will be trained to become both a media researcher and an active player in today’s media world. You will also develop media expertise by investigating questions such as:

  • How do new technologies affect the media landscape and society at large?

You study a range of research methodologies throughout the course including • interview-based narrative and biographical research • case study and ethnography • media analysis • surveying and sampling • statistical analysis of large data sets. You critique current developments in research methodology then design and conduct your own pieces of original research.

The MRes includes a research-based dissertation, which may become a pilot study towards a PhD. Several recent MRes students have gone onto doctoral level study, in fields such as education and inequality, and activism and sport.

Course design

You need 180 credits for the MRes

You choose up to 120 credits from the following modules:

  • qualitative methodologies and interviewing skills
  • qualitative research designs and ethnography
  • discourse and linguistic theory and analysis
  • survey design
  • introduction to survey analysis
  • multivariate statistical analysis
  • philosophies of research and design
  • research philosophies in today's sociology

You may choose to substitute 30 credits from another course within our MRes programme.

To gain the MRes you must present a 60-credit research-based dissertation in an area of your choice. This piece of work is supervised by our staff and gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the skills you have learned and your understanding of the research process and philosophies.

Employability

This course gives you the skills needed to carry out independent research. You learn to consider the research problems and associated ethical issues, select a suitable approach, and design and conduct your study. The skills and knowledge you gain are in great demand by many organisations. The Economic and Social Research Council have noted that there is a significant lack of the high-level skills in statistical analysis provided by this course.
