During the two-year MSc programme Leisure, Tourism and Environment at Wageningen University & Research you focus on themes such as landscape, space, place, locality, authenticity and sustainability. The increasing number of people that spends a growing proportion of their leisure time and money on travelling, causes new questions to arise: what is the effect of all this tourism on local cultures and economies?
By joining the MSc Leisure, Tourism and Environment programme, you study the underlying issues of the fast growing tourism industry. You look at tourism from a historical and philosophical perspective, learning about social and cultural theory and how to apply these using advanced research methods and analysis techniques. The PGCE Sport, Leisure and Tourism (14-19)is a nine month innovative, intensive and unique course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching the 1419 age range in both the secondary and lifelong learning sectors.
The PGCE Sport, Leisure and Tourism (14-19)aims to support you to make the transition from subject expert to teacher/lecturer in the areas you are interested in.
The course will develop your practical skills and knowledge to enable you to relate this to the wider educational responsibilities of being a teacher/lecturer. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools and to provide a strong foundation for working in the lifelong learning sector, especially further education.
The course is organised in partnership with schools and further education colleges where you spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching.
On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.
• Professional Studies
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.
• Curriculum Studies
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.
• Enhanced Studies
The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.
This course is perfect for those who already have a first degree and potentially some professional experience in either sports, leisure, travel or tourism, and are looking to take their first steps into teaching.
This course might also appeal to those with teaching support experience or even teachers from other subject areas.
The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.
Your University-based sessions are taught through a mix of seminars, workshops and peer teaching as there is an emphasis placed upon informed discussion and debate and knowledge exchange.
During your two Professional Practice teaching placements you will be working closely with and supported by teachers/lecturers and assigned to a designated Curriculum Mentor to oversee your developmental needs and progress.
Your assessment on PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University is through formative methods with a final grading completed at the end of the PGCE.
Each of your three university-based modules (Curriculum, Professional and Enhanced Studies) are assessed through a 4,000 word small-scale research piece and with each of these modules offering you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits it is possible to gain a total of 60 Masters level credits through these three modules.
Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day to day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your university tutor.
There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.
Having successfully completed the PGCE and been recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) you have the opportunity to work in various roles in different education contexts and sectors including physical education teaching, college lecturer in sports, public services and travel and tourism. Travel students have also been able to accept roles in geography and business.
In addition to being employed in an organisation and capacity which you find exciting there is also the opportunity for you to continue your studies in education through participating in Masters level programmes.
Should you decide to continue with your studies after the PGCE remember that the PGCE here at Canterbury Christ Church University offers you the opportunity to gain up to a total of 60 Masters Level credits which count towards a full Masters and can be taken onto other universities.

Important information: Future of the Cheshire campus
Manchester Metropolitan University has confirmed that it will be closing its Cheshire campus in the summer of 2019.
We are still pleased to receive applications for one year full time postgraduate exercise and sport science courses and research degrees, starting in 2018 on the Cheshire campus. Courses will only be delivered on campus until summer 2019, after this date teaching and research supervision will take place in Manchester. Our students and staff will be supported during this period to ensure that the impact on your studies is minimal.

MA Exercise and Sport (Sport and Leisure History) provides a focus for research into nineteenth and twentieth century sport and leisure, and is actively engaged in employing all historical approaches, including oral history, biography, and prosopography, to uncover the individual and collective lives of the men and women involved in sporting and leisure activities.
Intellectually challenging and discipline-focused, the MA Exercise and Sport (Sport and Leisure History) programme prepares students for a career in sports history, education and socio-cultural studies at an advanced level.
Taught by leading researchers within the field of sports history, an interdisciplinary perspective is encouraged to explore the past. This programme is highly valued by employers and the wider sport and leisure community with many of our graduates holding senior positions in research, Higher Education, and advisory roles within professional sports clubs, archival collections and museums.
Students will also have access to the Sports and Leisure History Research Archive. This archive contains over 1,000 books, journals and magazines dating back to the early 19th century. Based initially on an extensive private collection, purchased from a founding member of the British Society of Sports History, the archive has been expanded to include sporting newspapers and magazines that have been digitised with the support of funding from Manchester City Football Club.

New digital technologies have transformed the ways we share and distribute information, interact with each other and spend our leisure time. Digital media have had a major impact on our engagement with politics and with culture. At the same time, older media such as printed books, radio, television and film are still present and are evolving in complex interrelationships with digital media.
The master's programme in Media Culture combines theoretical reflection on these developments, research on user practices and training in basic media skills. To gain the MRes you must present a 60-credit research-based dissertation in an area of your choice. This piece of work is supervised by our staff and gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the skills you have learned and your understanding of the research process and philosophies.
This course gives you the skills needed to carry out independent research. You learn to consider the research problems and associated ethical issues, select a suitable approach, and design and conduct your study. The skills and knowledge you gain are in great demand by many organisations. The Economic and Social Research Council have noted that there is a significant lack of the high-level skills in statistical analysis provided by this course.
