Course content

The focus of the degree will be a major project: working with a tutor, most of our students devise a music and management project to combine and reflect upon music management theory and practice. This could include, for example, organising an event, acting as a consultant during a work placement you organise, or managing a musical group. Alternatively, you can complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

A core module throughout the year will introduce you to research methods in music, equipping you with the skills to support the rest of your studies. You’ll also choose from optional modules to specialise in one of computer music, aesthetics, musicology, editing, psychology of music, performance, composition, artistic management or live music promotion.

In both semesters you’ll study core modules run by Leeds University Business School. These will introduce you to strategic management, marketing for managers and how businesses in the creative industries are actually run and managed, applying concepts and theories to understand the business models of media companies, as well as the impact of digital technologies and the rise of exciting new markets.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

This innovative programme combines expertise from the universities of Leeds and Southampton, both renowned for their Geographic Information Systems (GIS) teaching and research. It builds on the University of Leeds’ considerable experience in successfully delivering taught Masters programmes in GIS and draws on the University of Southampton’s expertise in teaching GIS in non-traditional settings.

The programme is designed to meet a wide range of requirements, covering areas of specialisation as diverse as business, environment, health and planning and is well-suited to an international audience.

It offers open distance learning for people working in commercial or public sector organisations, who need core training and skills development, as well as those who simply want to study in their own environment and at their own pace.

Course content

The programme runs over three years on a part-time basis, with study to Postgraduate Certificate level in year one, Postgraduate Diploma level in year two and an MSc achieved after three years.

The first year consists of four core modules, providing an introduction to theories and concepts that underpin GIS, skills in GIS software and database systems, knowledge of spatial analysis, statistical and mathematical modelling and the requirement to undertake a feasibility study of GIS in a workplace.

In year two you tailor your study to specialise in areas as diverse as business, environment, health, planning, remote sensing and GIS development. This is ideal for students already in full-time employment and looking to enhance their existing GIS skills to progress in their chosen career or make a career change.

In year three, you further build on your interests and expertise by undertaking a programme of independent research through the dissertation module. This gives you the opportunity to develop research in any area of GIS, expanding on work undertaken as part of the course, studying a problem of personal interest or researching a topic relevant to a workplace. This programme is studied entirely in China. It is jointly delivered by the University of Leeds and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and allows experienced Chinese TESOL professionals to gain a deeper understanding of how languages are learned and the strategies used to teach them.

You will explore current insights, issues and problems withinTESOL, and assesses the theoretical frameworks for the language learning,teaching and testing processes. You will have the opportunity to appraise the proceduresand outcomes of different approaches to pedagogy and evaluation in TESOL, andthe ability to explore how such issues and frameworks relate to your ownprofessional environment.

You’ll study four core modules exploring current theories of language acquisition, the complex context in which any language learning takes place, different approaches to and strategies for TESOL, and current theories around language assessment.

You’ll be taught at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies by tutors from both universities and be registered as a full-time student at Leeds, giving you access to all of our online library resources as well as those available at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

This programme is not suitable for those without professional TESOL experience.

Course content

This programme is jointly delivered and has been designed by academic staff from both the University of Leeds and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

All teaching and learning is influenced by the context in which it occurs. The programme begins by considering the components of an educational context, from visible features of the classroom to the less visible but influential educational norms that affect teacher and learner roles and behaviours.

You then explore current theoretical models of language acquisition, and consider the ways in which people learn, or acquire a second language. The course continues by deepening your understanding of learning and teaching integrated skills in TESOL, focusing explicitly on oral and written language processing and their implications for different teaching and learning activities. You’ll use this knowledge to design, adapt and evaluate language learning tasks, and to think carefully about methods of assessment that will be appropriate for your working context

At every stage of the course, you’ll develop your research skills and think about the relationship between research and TESOL practice. You’ll demonstrate this awareness when you complete your critical study: an intensive, small-scale, research project related to your own interests in TESOL education.

In March of the year after you successfully complete the programme, you’ll receive a MA TESOL degree from the University of Leeds at a graduation ceremony in Guangzhou.

This programme combines in-depth training in mainstream advanced statistical modelling with a specialisation in financial mathematics.

The MSc in Statistics with Applications to Finance is a focused degree programme which enables you to both broaden and deepen your understanding of statistics and financial applications. As well as the statistics expertise within the School of Mathematics, the MSc also draws on experience in Financial Mathematics, a joint venture between the School of Mathematics and Leeds University Business School.

If you do not meet the full academic entry requirements then you may wish to consider the Graduate Diploma in Mathematics. This course is aimed at students who would like to study for a mathematics related MSc course but do not currently meet the entry requirements. Upon completion of the Graduate Diploma, students who meet the required performance level will be eligible for entry onto a number of related MSc courses, in the following academic year.

On graduation you will be eligible for the Graduate Statistician (GradStat) status and after five years’ experience this can then be converted into the professional status of Chartered Statistician (CStat).

Being a chartered statistician provides employers, contractors and collaborators of statisticians a level of assurance that you are at the forefront of your field and is a mark of accomplishment to society.

Course content

The first two semesters of your course will consist of taught modules and in the third semester you will devote your time to a major dissertation. Within each semester you will take three compulsory modules. However, you can tailor the course to meet your individual needs through selection of a further module in each semester from a variety of options.

In the first semester you’ll be introduced to statistical computing with an emphasis on sampling-based methods including Markov Chain Monte Carlo. You’ll also explore financial investments such as stock and shares and develop the necessary probabilistic tools to evaluate risks within the market.

In semester two you’ll look at risk assessment in detail, gaining comprehensive knowledge of mathematical and practical approaches to financial risk management. Avoiding the disastrous consequences of badly managed risk requires detailed mathematical knowledge of how to quantify financial risk. Learning and teaching

This programme is taught jointly between the School of Mathematics and the Leeds University Business School. You will study a mixture of modules taught by specialists in each school though a combination of lectures and small group workshops.

Assessment

The taught course is primarily assessed by end-of-semester examinations with a small component of continuous assessment. The semester three project is assessed by a written dissertation and a short oral presentation.

There is an increasing demand for individuals who can manage and control the way data is used. These individuals require an understanding of computer science and mathematics as well as a range of sector specific skills which can be applied in a variety of business environments.

The Data Science and Analytics MSc is a highly flexible course which offers the opportunity to develop a range of skills, including analysing structured and unstructured data, analysing large datasets and critically evaluating results in context, through a combination of compulsory and optional modules. By choosing appropriate modules you can follow specific pathways, in business management, healthcare or geographic information systems (GIS), which will allow you to tailor the programme to suit your background and needs.

The course combines expertise from the Schools of Computing, Geography and Mathematics with that of Leeds University Business School and the Yorkshire Centre for Health Informatics. The programme will equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills in data science.

Students on this programme will be benefit from being taught by experts from different academic units: the School of Mathematics (SoM); the School of Computing (SoC); the Yorkshire Centre for Health Informatics (YCHI); the Faculty of Medicine and Health (FoM); the School of Geography (SoG) and Leeds University Business School (LUBS).

Modules are available from each of these areas and in addition there are three new modules available in the SoM for students who are not from a mathematics/statistics background, while modules in the SoC will be suitable for students on this programme who are not from a computer science background.

The programme will therefore expose students to different perspectives on data science, including the mathematical and computational underpinnings of the subject and practical understanding of application in a specific context. In particular, we anticipate many projects for the dissertation will span at least two units with joint supervision. As well as emphasizing the application nature of the programme, the dissertation will feature strongly data elucidation, analysis, and interpretation of real-world problems.

Learning and teaching

Teaching will be split between the Dental school on the main campus and the Wellcome Trust Brenner Building (WTBB) at the St James’s University Hospital. The WTBB is a modern purpose built research facility, housing cutting edge facilities in imaging, tissue and microbiological culture and next generation sequencing technologies. On the main campus students can benefit from all the expertise, facilities (such as the Leeds Dental Translational and Clinical Research Unit) and support provided by the Dental school.

Our course emphasises student directed and multidisciplinary learning. You can choose to study PGCE History via the following routes:

- The Leeds Trinity University PGCE Provider-led programme led by the University with placements in partnership schools. Trainees spend in excess of 24 weeks in schools, undertaking two contrasting teaching placements.
- PGCE School Direct programmes are a partnership between Leeds Trinity University and schools. Trainees normally spend most of their time in schools, with tuition provided by University tutors based at the school, and expert school teachers.

Course content

Throughout the year you’ll study core modules covering different aspects of advertising and marketing.

You will build your understanding of the ways in which brands communicate with their audiences with modules in marketing communications and PR and corporate communications. From there you’ll explore theories and practices of different types of advertising, and examine how organisations plan and develop their media strategies in a changing media landscape. In addition you’ll also gain an insight into important marketing functions of marketing which support brand communications.

Optional modules will give you the chance to shape the programme to suit your interests or career plans. You could focus on sales promotion, brand management and other fields such as social media, digital and interactive marketing.

The course culminates in a final project, which allows you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained while focusing on a single topic in-depth. Two options are available – you could complete either a standard research dissertation on a topic of your choice, or a consultancy project, allowing you to work with an external business on a real marketing problem.

You’ll look at micro and macroeconomics and the methodology of econometric research, whilst acquiring a solid grounding in corporate finance and the financial economics tools commonly used in financial services, quantitative investment analysis and research.

This course is developed and delivered by highly qualified staff with research and consultancy expertise. You’ll take an open-minded approach to economic problems, studying current mainstream theoretical and applied techniques alongside a range of alternative critical perspectives, equipping you to meet the growing demand for economics that can address and resolve real-world problems.

Our Economics department stands for a distinctive type of economics, which is realistic, interdisciplinary and policy relevant. We take an open-minded approach to economic problems, and draw on expertise from one of the major hubs of heterodox economics research in the UK.

Commentary and coverage in the media has highlighted the need for more philosophical discussion about how best to approach economics. Course content

Throughout the year you’ll study a set of core modules that develop your understanding of economics and finance. As well as microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and how it is applied to real-life problems, you’ll build your knowledge of international banking and finance and corporate finance as a whole.

This knowledge base will support your specialist learning when you choose from a range of optional modules. You could explore different areas of economics such as the economics of globalisation, or concentrate on financial topics such as international business finance or financial derivatives.

These different elements of your learning will give you in-depth knowledge of specific topics alongside your broader grounding in economics and finance. You’ll also sharpen your research skills and gain an awareness of different methodologies. All of these aspects will come together in your dissertation – an independent research project on a topic of your choice. You’ll undertake this over a period of three months with the support of an academic supervisor.
