It aims to achieve improvements in the most economical manner possible and is focused on reducing waste in business processes.

Our MSc Lean Six Sigma for Operational Excellence programme will build understanding of the tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and demonstrate the tangible and quantifiable results these bring to the bottom line. Programme modules

- Manufacturing System and Process Modelling
The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of manufacturing and its management that recognises breadth and depth of required resources and information. This is done through developing an understanding of the hierarchy of computer based modelling relevant to manufacturing, ranging from the detail of material behaviour in processed parts, through macroscopic process models to the integration of processes within manufacturing systems and higher level business processes.

- Lean and Agile Manufacture
This module allows students to gain an understanding of lean and agile concepts in the manufacturing business, including its distribution chains. Students will learn to specify, design and evaluate an appropriate lean or agile business system.

- Engineering Management and Business Studies
The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company. Students will learn to evaluate commercial risk, plan and organise engineering activities for improved company effectiveness and communicate technical and business information to ensure maximum impact.

- Product Information Systems – Product Lifecycle Management
The objectives of this module are for students to understand and critically evaluate the emerging product information systems for designers in the form of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Students will learn to use modern information and process modelling techniques to define the information integration and workflow requirements of a PLM configuration.

- The Innovation Process and Project Management
Students will establish a clear overview of the innovation process and an understanding of the essential elements within it. They will learn strategies for planning and carrying out innovative projects in any field.

- Sustainable Development: The Engineering Context
This module provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

- Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Automation
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, processes and technologies. They will learn to understand and critically evaluate advanced manufacturing processes and technologies, assessing their advantages and disadvantages.

- Additive Manufacturing
The module will introduce and develop the concepts of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and demonstrate the different AM techniques available at Loughborough University. The module will emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies and highlight applications and case studies from the AM industry.

- Projects
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research. Following eight taught modules, students pursue an individual project typically based on the diverse range of industrially focused manufacturing research strengths within the School. Part time students may base their projects on particular needs of their current employer.

Examinations are in January and May / June with coursework throughout the programme. The project is assessed by written report, presentation and exhibition.

Careers and further study

Within national or multinational manufacturing industry companies working as a Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Systems Analyst or Software Development Specialist. Graduates may also study for an MPhil or PhD with the School’s research groups.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union. These scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Residential weekend

A residential weekend takes place in Semester 2. It is essential for all DMS students and is focused on the development of management coaching skills.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by assignments, two per module. It is a requirement of the course to attend and contribute to the residential weekend.

As part of the ever evolving curriculum, all lecturers on the course strive to ensure that assignments are relevant and innovative, firmly linking them to the needs of you and your potential employers. As part of your studies, you'll take part in a weekend residential where you'll engage in various activities that have practical and theoretical use. As part of your learning you'll undertake an improvement project directly linked to your work. This project is guided by a lead management expert. These activities link across the entire curriculum.

Modules are assessed using two types of assessment: Formative and Summative;

Formative assessment is any process whereby we concern ourselves with the process of learning and academic progress in order to assist development and knowledge acquisition, but without conferring a formal mark. Throughout the course there are various formative mechanisms, including group-work activity, learning diaries, action learning sets and the day to day advice and support from tutors and colleagues.

Summative assessment refers to the formalised marking of work, through examinations and the assessment of assignments. Although it is ultimately the summative assessments which confer a result, we intend that the formative processes should enhance the prospects of that result, and its meaning. Present students tell us that this shared engagement with learning has added considerably to their knowledge and confidence.

Employability

If you are not already working in a managerial role, upon completion of this course you'll have certainly increased your chances of securing such position. This course provides a broad understanding of the organisation and how it works with clearer insight into the diversity of cultures and preferences within a team. You'll also posses a greater ability to assist others in development and address performance problems with a clearer understanding of the needs of 'customers' and stakeholders.

What you will study

The course consists of nine modules with a key theme throughout your studies including the ethical dimensions of decision-making and interpersonal relations. This means you can be confident that you will develop personally and professionally as part of the course, ultimately making yourself more employable. You’ll study the following modules:

- Aircraft Systems Design and Optimization (10 Credits)
This module will give you a comprehensive knowledge of the systems of the aircraft, including preliminary designing of systems primary and secondary systems, operation and maintenance concepts. You will be introduced to novel engineering design methods such as Multi Objective Design (MOD) and multi-disciplinary design optimisation. Part of the module will be delivered with the support of industrial partners and experts, which will bring real scale industrial experience and interaction with the industry.

- Aviation Sustainable Engineering
This module will explore the historical and contemporary perspectives in international aviation framework while looking at the socio-economic benefits of aviation since the Chicago Convention of 1944. You will analyse current and future design and manufacturing trends in the aerospace industry.

- Condition Monitoring and Non-Destructive Testing
This module analyses condition monitoring and non-destructive testing, giving you an appreciation for the key concepts and tools in this subject. You will evaluate the use of these tools in different situations within industry and make recommendations on necessary adjustments.

- Advanced Materials and Manufacture
You will look at a range of modern engineering materials and develop an awareness of the selection criteria for aeronautical and mechanical engineering applications. You will also look at a range of “standard” and modern manufacturing processes, methods and techniques.

- Lean Maintenance Operations & Certification
This module will help you develop and understand concepts in Six Sigma, lean maintenance, operational research, reliability centred maintenance and maintenance planning. You will evaluate and critically analyse processes within highly regulated industries.

- Safety, Health and Environmental Engineering Management
Covering the principles and implementation of the safety, health and environmental management within the workplace, you will look at key concepts in human cognition and other human factors in risk management and accident/incident investigation. You will also gain an understanding of the role of stakeholder involvement in sustainable development.

- Strategic Leadership and Management for Engineers
This module will explore a range of purposes and issues surrounding successful strategic management and leadership as well as appraising a range of leadership behaviours and processes that may inspire innovation, change and continuous transformation within different organisational areas including logistics and supply chain management.

- Research Methods for Engineers
The aim of this module is to provide you with the ability to determine the most appropriate methods to collect, analyse and interpret information relevant to an area of engineering research. To provide you with the ability to critically reflect on your own and others work.

- Individual Project
You will undertake a substantial piece of investigative research work on an appropriate engineering topic and further develop your skills in research, critical analysis and development of solutions using appropriate techniques.

Learning and teaching methods

You will be taught through a variety of lectures, tutorials and practical laboratory work.

You will have 10 contact hours per week, you will also need to devote around 30 hours per week to self-study, such as conducting research and preparing for your assessments and lectures.

The dissertation has three elements of assessment: a thesis, a poster presentation, and a viva voce examination.

Facilities

The aerospace industry has become increasingly competitive and in recognising this, the University has recently invested £1.8m into its aerospace facilities.

Facilities available to our students have been fully approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). With access to an EASA-approved suite of practical training facilities, our students can use a range of industry-standard facilities.

Our Aerospace Centre is home to a Jetstream 31 Twin Turboprop aircraft, assembled with Honeywell TPE331 Engines and Rockwell-Collins Proline II Avionics. It has a 19-passenger configuration.

The EASA-approved suite contains training and practical workshops and laboratories. Each area contains the tools and equipment required to facilitate the instruction of either mechanical or avionic practical tasks as required by the CAA.

Students use the TQ two-shaft gas turbine rig to investigate the inner workings of a gas turbine engine by collecting real data and subsequently analysing them for engine performance.

Our sub-sonic wind tunnel is used for basic aerodynamic instruction, testing and demonstrations on various aerofoil shapes and configurations.

The single-seater, full motion, three axes Merlin MP521 flight simulator can be programmed for several aircraft types that include the Airbus A320 and the Cessna 150.

Dissertation: The dissertation submission is usually between 15-18,000 words depending on the subject area. It allows you to develop an area of interest in depth and to critically analyse this area.
Project Management Fundamentals: To explore and promote contemporary project management principles and concepts. Also to examine processes, tools and methodologies of project management through a problem based learning approach using industry case studies.
Project Planning, Executing, Controlling and Closure: To develop the requisite project management skills and knowledge necessary to manage the key processes of planning, executing, controlling and closing a project at appropriate stages in the project life cycle. Production Management and BIM: Will provide an in-depth understanding into the production management of modern, complex and fast paced construction projects. Sustainable and Lean Principles within Construction: To identify and critically appraise how environmental sustainability and lean principles can be incorporated into a more modern and innovative construction organisation and industry

Structure

We usually hold taught modules over three to five consecutive days. In some cases we use other teaching methods, including distance and work-based learning. You'll organise your work-based learning with your module leader, this ensures it's tailored to your needs and the learning outcomes are achievable.

Assessment

Assessment is normally by assignment. At this level, we do not need to test your understanding, but rather your ability to implement your newfound skills and knowledge. Assignments will normally be about a real industrial case study, or a live project in your workplace.

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

The course is particularly aimed at people with at least some background in the construction industry. If you have a different background you may wish to consider our MSc Project Management.

To facilitate group projects there are dedicated student working spaces, such as ‘The Hub’, an area that is well equipped for meetings and working with IT. The Zone is another area that’s popular with students undertaking group work or individual study.

Research-Rich Learning
