Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a powerful methodology for achieving process efficiency and effectiveness which results in enhanced customer satisfaction and improved bottom line results. It aims to achieve improvements in the most economical manner possible and is focused on reducing waste in business processes.

Our MSc Lean Six Sigma for Operational Excellence programme will build understanding of the tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and demonstrate the tangible and quantifiable results these bring to the bottom line. Students will learn state-of-the-art concepts, methods, principles, tools and techniques, relating to quality and process improvement for a broad range of organisations, such as manufacturing, service, public sector and third sector, set within a global context.

Programme modules

- Manufacturing System and Process Modelling
The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of manufacturing and its management that recognises breadth and depth of required resources and information. This is done through developing an understanding of the hierarchy of computer based modelling relevant to manufacturing, ranging from the detail of material behaviour in processed parts, through macroscopic process models to the integration of processes within manufacturing systems and higher level business processes.

- Lean and Agile Manufacture
This module allows students to gain an understanding of lean and agile concepts in the manufacturing business, including its distribution chains. Students will learn to specify, design and evaluate an appropriate lean or agile business system.

- Engineering Management and Business Studies
The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company. Students will learn to evaluate commercial risk, plan and organise engineering activities for improved company effectiveness and communicate technical and business information to ensure maximum impact.

- Product Information Systems – Product Lifecycle Management
The objectives of this module are for students to understand and critically evaluate the emerging product information systems for designers in the form of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Students will learn to use modern information and process modelling techniques to define the information integration and workflow requirements of a PLM configuration.

- The Innovation Process and Project Management
Students will establish a clear overview of the innovation process and an understanding of the essential elements within it. They will learn strategies for planning and carrying out innovative projects in any field.

- Sustainable Development: The Engineering Context
This module provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

- Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Automation
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, processes and technologies. They will learn to understand and critically evaluate advanced manufacturing processes and technologies, assessing their advantages and disadvantages.

- Additive Manufacturing
The module will introduce and develop the concepts of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and demonstrate the different AM techniques available at Loughborough University. The module will emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies and highlight applications and case studies from the AM industry.

- Projects
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research. Following eight taught modules, students pursue an individual project typically based on the diverse range of industrially focused manufacturing research strengths within the School. Part time students may base their projects on particular needs of their current employer.

Examinations are in January and May / June with coursework throughout the programme. The project is assessed by written report, presentation and exhibition.

Careers and further study

Within national or multinational manufacturing industry companies working as a Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Systems Analyst or Software Development Specialist. Graduates may also study for an MPhil or PhD with the School’s research groups.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union. These scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

What you will study

The course consists of nine modules with a key theme throughout your studies including the ethical dimensions of decision-making and interpersonal relations. - Aircraft Systems Design and Optimization (10 Credits)

Facilities

The aerospace industry has become increasingly competitive and in recognising this, the University has recently invested £1.8m into its aerospace facilities.

Facilities available to our students have been fully approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). With access to an EASA-approved suite of practical training facilities, our students can use a range of industry-standard facilities.

Our Aerospace Centre is home to a Jetstream 31 Twin Turboprop aircraft, assembled with Honeywell TPE331 Engines and Rockwell-Collins Proline II Avionics. It has a 19-passenger configuration.

The EASA-approved suite contains training and practical workshops and laboratories. Each area contains the tools and equipment required to facilitate the instruction of either mechanical or avionic practical tasks as required by the CAA.

Students use the TQ two-shaft gas turbine rig to investigate the inner workings of a gas turbine engine by collecting real data and subsequently analysing them for engine performance.

Our sub-sonic wind tunnel is used for basic aerodynamic instruction, testing and demonstrations on various aerofoil shapes and configurations.

The single-seater, full motion, three axes Merlin MP521 flight simulator can be programmed for several aircraft types that include the Airbus A320 and the Cessna 150.

Research Methods: Gain an understanding of the academic research process and the differing techniques, strategies and methods used to undertake research in the built environment. This module is studied before the Dissertation module.
Dissertation: The dissertation submission is usually between 15-18,000 words depending on the subject area. It allows you to develop an area of interest in depth and to critically analyse this area.
Project Management Fundamentals: To explore and promote contemporary project management principles and concepts. Also to examine processes, tools and methodologies of project management through a problem based learning approach using industry case studies.
Project Planning, Executing, Controlling and Closure: To develop the requisite project management skills and knowledge necessary to manage the key processes of planning, executing, controlling and closing a project at appropriate stages in the project life cycle. Industry standard project simulation software is used to apply the theoretical knowledge in a context.
Production Management and BIM: Will provide an in-depth understanding into the production management of modern, complex and fast paced construction projects. It also provides an appropriate awareness and expertise about key aspects of Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the Construction Management role
Sustainable and Lean Principles within Construction: To identify and critically appraise how environmental sustainability and lean principles can be incorporated into a more modern and innovative construction organisation and industry
Collaborative BIM Project: Allows students to follow BIM protocols and practice in a collaborative multidisciplinary project team to achieve project success. Real life project simulations are worked on using industry standard software
Prince 2®: To develop the requisite skills and knowledge needed in order to apply the PRINCE2® method to the management of different stages of the project life cycle

Structure

The full Master's course comprises 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

Format

We usually hold taught modules over three to five consecutive days. In some cases we use other teaching methods, including distance and work-based learning. You'll organise your work-based learning with your module leader, this ensures it's tailored to your needs and the learning outcomes are achievable.

Assessment

Assessment is normally by assignment. At this level, we do not need to test your understanding, but rather your ability to implement your newfound skills and knowledge. Assignments will normally be about a real industrial case study, or a live project in your workplace.

Careers / Further study

The MSc Aerospace is excellent for developing technical and business knowledge and skills for the Aerospace sector. The breadth of optional learning allows you to steer your own academic progress, develop personal career objectives and show competencies required for professional recognition.

The course covers how to plan construction projects, how to manage supply chains, how to keep people working together, and how to use Building Information Modelling (BIM) for a more efficient construction process.

Strong demand for construction project managers means there will be significant opportunities for you to take up a well-paid, challenging and international career. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), which gives it additional credibility in the eyes of potential employers.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

The course is particularly aimed at people with at least some background in the construction industry. If you have a different background you may wish to consider our MSc Project Management.

The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

Learning Environment

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material.

You’ll have access to industry-standard software such as Microsoft Project, Asta Powerproject, IBM SPSS and NVivo. You will have access to the most up-to-date versions of Autodesk BIM software and other BIM-related learning materials including the ‘White Frog’ system.

Our library, which was ranked #2 in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey for 2015, has excellent digital resources with over 100 databases for independent learning as well as half a million electronic books and another 500,000 print books.

To facilitate group projects there are dedicated student working spaces, such as ‘The Hub’, an area that is well equipped for meetings and working with IT. The Zone is another area that’s popular with students undertaking group work or individual study.

Research-Rich Learning

As a Masters student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will support you in your final independent research project, where you choose to produce either a research paper or a dissertation. COURSE SUMMARY

The construction industry is facing unprecedented change that is being driven by digital transformation. This course focuses strategically on these changes, and is designed with the aim of educating and supporting professionals in responding to current and future challenges in client expectations and  wider  societal needs.

This programme aims to provide extensive knowledge in the fields of BIM, Lean, and integrated design and project delivery approaches to deliver better whole life value through digital built environments. It is intended primarily for practitioners and graduates in the fields of architecture, engineering  construction,  and built environment, who wish to specialise in this area of industry digital transformation.

This course provides the skills and competences that will enable you to support integrated design and delivery approaches as well as equipping you with the skills necessary to coordinate roles and responsibilities for the financial, environmental and social performance of built environment assets. Building  upon  leading edge research and practice, you will be able to up-skill and take a principle role in the digital transformation of practices in work settings, delivering better whole life value through integrated design and project delivery approaches.

The School of the Built Environment enjoys excellent links with the local, national and international built environment industry. This course meets the needs of the industry by providing formal postgraduate level education and technical knowledge in the highly advanced and emerging area of BIM and Digital  Built  Environments. Guest lecturers from industry with expertise in relevant areas are invited to provide lectures throughout the duration of the course, enriching your learning experience. Field trips and site visits to innovative projects will allow the analysis and critical evaluation of cases in  which  high quality design and the adoption of technology has led to benefits for clients, users and/or communities.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied (a) full-time on campus, (b) part-time on campus or (c) part-time by online distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September.  

The Masters award consists of three core taught modules and one elective module, followed by a dissertation.  The PgDip requires the completion of three core taught modules and one elective taught module.  The PgCert requires the completion of two of the core taught modules.  All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed through coursework.  

For the full-time study option:

You will study two 30 credit modules in each of your first two semesters on campus; these are designed to give you the core knowledge and experience required.  In the final semester you will progress to the dissertation. 

For the part-time on campus study option:

Part-time students attend the university one day per week, usually on day release from employment in industry.  A 30 credit module is studied each semester.  Throughout the final two semesters you undertake the dissertation.

Distance learning study:

A 30 credit module is studied each semester.  Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role.  Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions.  In the final two semesters you progress to the dissertation worth 60 credits, which is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support. You have the option to attend the university for specific activities like field trips, Salford study days and summer schools, which enable face to face interaction and knowledge exchange.

TEACHING

On campus study is delivered by a variety of learning and teaching methods.  Lectures introduce new material and provide the core knowledge base for each module.  Tutorials offer the opportunity for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors.  Design project work is an important aspect of the course enabling you to initiate and control research and design techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks.  

Distance Learning uses an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support.  Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors with student interaction.  Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience.  Learning is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role.  

Additional learning support will be provided through optional study days for both on-campus and distance learning students along with a summer school which will include seminars, group working, presentations and guest speakers from industry.

Distance Learning: Two to three hours online contact time with up to five hours personal study time per week
