Our course materials are based on real issues faced by contemporary businesses, covering topics ranging from creativity in business to global economics, strategic management and organisational change management.

You’ll learn to creatively address issues such as competition and sustainability and acquire knowledge of the global economic and business environment. You’ll develop leadership and team development skills and an understanding of management and organisational methods. Guest speakers add value to this course, which is updated regularly to reflect current business issues.

In response to this we have developed our course in Leadership in Healthcare to educate and equip current healthcare professionals with the management and leadership skills required to deal with the challenges within this multi-faceted industry.

The intention of our Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Leadership in Healthcare is to develop and improve capabilities amongst the students, thereby developing professionals who can:

1.      Have a better understanding of the organisational environment around them.

3.      Can provide organisational leadership and navigate in difficult circumstances.

This healthcare leadership course is ideal for doctors of any grade, and other healthcare professionals who wish to gain vital skills in leadership and how to lead teams effectively. The Leadership in Healthcare course combines theory and practice by applying the theoretical aspects to real life practice scenarios. During your time of study, emphasis will primarily be on the ethical aspects of leadership while gaining a fresh insight into the latest research surrounding the topic of Leadership in Healthcare.

Students may apply for the MSc in Leadership in Healthcare as a two-year course, firstly completing the Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), followed by the MSc (60 credits).

Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership in Healthcare

Diploma MSc is a collaborative partner of the University of South Wales. On successful completion of this course, you will receive a University of South Wales Postgraduate Diploma.

We have developed our Leadership in Healthcare Postgraduate Diploma to answer challenges faced by leaders in healthcare relating to decision making, healthcare management and ethics.

Developing a structure to prevent “harm” to the patients requires an organisational culture that, in many ways, is as challenging as it is varied. Individuals in healthcare management and leadership are required to be knowledgeable, skilled and capable within his/herself; will also need the capability and trustworthiness of colleagues around him/her. 

The philosophy behind the course is, to bestow the knowledge and capabilities amongst the healthcare professionals; thereby developing professionals who can:

1). Have better understanding of the organisational environment around them.

The Leadership in Healthcare Masters course provides a progression route from the Postgraduate Diploma course in Leadership in Healthcare.

The MSc in Leadership in Healthcare runs over 1 calendar year. Starting with an initial 12-week online module to develop skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies, students then choose either the professional project module which consists of a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional.

On completion of the Masters in healthcare leadership, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate.
  • Apply a variety of leadership and healthcare management theories and philosophies to complex situations in healthcare settings.

This one-year course can be tailored to suit your individual strengths and career aspirations, including the option of an additional semester to study abroad. Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

The MSc Leadership and Management will give you the opportunity to explore the behaviours and the role of leadership and how it may influence the individual, the team and the organisation. Theories of leadership will be discussed and applied to your own leadership practice and that of your organisation.

Organisational leadership themes relating to power, politics, ethics, gender and cross-cultural leadership will be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Course delivery is highly flexible and includes a mixture of classroom and work based learning, so you can fit your career development around your work commitments. Throughout the course you will undertake a number of bespoke work related assignments and gain additional support through our personal mentor/work based mentor scheme.

You will also be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning by completing guided reading, individual and organisational analyses, and written assignments.

Delivery is normally by blended learning using 3 day weekend blocks over two weekends on a Saturday/Sunday.
