Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.
Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.
Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.
The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.
Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.
Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

Our expert lecturers will be able to advise you on the best elective modules to tailor the course to your own needs and interests. Full-time students can complete the course in a year, but most students undertake the taught modules in a year and conduct their dissertation in the second year. There is also the opportunity to complete the dissertation remotely.
The course constitutes 45 credits for the core modules, 75 credits for the elective modules and 60 credits for the dissertation. When it comes to the dissertation, you can choose your own area of interest and format, opting to submit a traditional research project where you source data and analyse it, or a literature review where you conduct a critical review of current practice.
The normal duration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for the dissertation).
The normal duration for a Postgraduate Diploma is one years' taught programme for full-time students or two years' taught programme for part-time students. Full-time students must complete their Postgraduate Diploma in three years and part-time students in five years.
Postgraduate Certificates in health and social care are not offered on a full-time basis.
Alternatively, students can take modules from this Masters degree as standalone Continuing Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) courses. In this case, course costs might vary.
Students have the opportunity to complete an additional five modules of 15 credits offered across the School of Health Sciences CPPD portfolio. There are over 50 modules to choose from including modules such as psychology for health and social care, leading and managing change, and infection control.
Students completing the two core modules plus one optional module totalling 60 credits can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate. On successful completion of seven modules (120 credits) students can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma. The completion of the dissertation leads to an MSc (180 credits).
Graduates from the Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care Masters course go into management consultant positions, teaching and research. Many work for the NHS or local authorities, but there are opportunities to work in other health areas. The course also qualifies you to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.
By successfully completing this course you will be able to enhance your skills in practice. You will also be able to apply your skills within posts in administration, management and health research in a variety of public and private settings.

The programme is designed to develop and equip critical champions and ambassadors for quality, safety and governance in health and social care. It enables you to apply your comprehensive knowledge, understanding, expertise and advanced skills to lead evidence-based enhancement of quality, safety and governance in your health and social care settings and evaluate the impact of this. The programme is suitable for individuals from the public, independent and voluntary sectors from any professional background, including clinical and support services.
Year 1 focuses on the transition to mastery and explores the context of safety, quality and governance in terms of policy, theory and experience, at a personal, local, national and international level. You also study different types and sources of evidence. You use these to identify a quality, safety or governance issue of relevance to your role based on an in-depth study of the principles, practices and tools of safety and governance in health and social care. You then develop and justify a business case for change based on this.
The modules studied in Year 1 make up the Advancing Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care, PgCert.
In Year 2, you plan and implement a change project based on your business case presented at the end of Year 1. To help you achieve this you study topics such as a human factors approach, strategic change management, action learning and leadership and evaluation methodologies. You then develop and critique an evaluation study proposal in Year 2 which you take forward during your dissertation module in Year 3. How you learn
In Years 1 and 2 the programme is taught in short study blocks spread across the academic year over a total of 14 days. We use a range of teaching methods including lectures and workshops, student-led seminars, action learning, real-life scenarios and case study analysis, interactive and online learning activities, directed and self-directed study activities. Year 3 is mainly guided self-directed study with the support of a dissertation supervisor. You are supported by module tutors with extensive experience in this subject area and the programme leader who is a member of the founding cohort for the NHS England and Health Foundation Q initiative.
How you are assessed
We use a range of assessment modes throughout the programme. These include an essay on the nature and use of evidence, analysis of a quality, safety or governance issue using a human factors approach, a business case and the final dissertation evaluating the change you have implemented.
Other modes of assessment include a poster presentation and defence, and an oral presentation with questions and answers.
The programme is supported by a critical friends stakeholder support forum which consists of service users and carers, employer representatives and academic staff. Members of this group participate in student assessment as well as supporting programme design and delivery as a means of ensuring the person-centred approach pervades all aspects of the programme and to maximise employer/organisational benefit.
On successful completion of this programme you are equipped with a range of knowledge, expertise and experiences such as advanced reasoning and decision-making skills. You are also able to work collaboratively, present and research. And you have strong ICT skills that are highly sought by employers. Our MRes Health and Social Care course is designed to give you an in-depth understanding of and skills in theoretical underpinnings and research methods relevant to applied research in contemporary health and social care contexts.
The course is designed for those who want to pursue a career in health and/or social care where research is a core component. Most of the units on this course are shared with other MSc and PhD programmes.
You will learn how to conduct and apply health and social care research to practice at both an individual and organisational level, drawing on the expertise of renowned lecturers and practitioners from fields including social work, nursing, midwifery, speech and language therapy, audiology, psychology and medicine.
