Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Adult Learning

Do you want to develop your knowledge and expertise in adult education? If so, this specialisation is for you. It focuses on ways to lead and develop communities of learners and their learning - in workplaces, communities and in local, global and virtual spaces. It offers ideas and approaches to enable participation and learning, through formal and non-formal means, and expand and extend practice and skill development in communities.

Through engagement with contemporary theories, approaches and concepts around lifelong learning and participation, you will identify local and global trends and practices around adult education. You will develop a repertoire of strategies to design engaging learning activities for adults.

You will explore how socially inclusive communities are developed and through practical case studies gain an appreciation of the transformative power of education in promoting community inclusion in global settings. You will learn how experiential learning and transformative approaches to teaching and learning can be used in community contexts to address core social issues such as poverty, racism and crime.

Digital learning

Do you want to learn how to adapt digital technologies effectively in teaching and learning across school, tertiary, workplace and community settings? This specialisation engages with the key issues and debates relating to digital technology in education and the application of effective educational technology practices for learning.

It is suited to professionals across school, tertiary, workplace and community settings, who are grappling with how best to design, facilitate and assess the use of digital technologies in teaching and learning.

You will explore current and emerging trends in digital technologies being used in education and develop your understanding of the social, political, economic, cultural and historical issues surrounding their adoption. Your expert practice will develop through engagement with contemporary theories, models and practical strategies for understanding digital technology in education and society. Key issues such as identity, cyber safety, globalisation, equity and emerging forms of social practice will be examined.

Early childhood education

Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education

If you want to develop your expertise and advance your career in early childhood education, then this specialisation is for you. It develops the expert practice of early childhood educators, leaders, policy makers and others interested in advancing their understanding of young children's learning, addressing the emerging need in global economies to build capacity of professionals in the early childhood sector.

It will equip you to respond to complex issues around children, their families and communities and initiate inclusive teaching and learning practices among young children.

You will develop your awareness of the features of leadership that engages critically and ethically in working with children, families and communities, and apply this to your professional practice.

This specialisation focuses on leadership practices and policy development within educational contexts. It is suited to those who are interested in leading educational initiatives and institutions and extending their knowledge of how to lead, manage and administer capable educational organisations.

You will explore the concept and characteristics of a capable organisation, and evaluate factors that contribute to maintaining and sustaining capable organisations including human intellect, knowledge, values, emotion, learning and organisational culture and climate.

As a result you will acquire a suite of effective leadership strategies for capability building and develop your understanding of how organisations build organisational resilience when confronted with change.

Importantly, you will add to this the capacity to assess organisational capability and develop capacity in particular contexts. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Through online delivery of content, our Higher Education MA offers you the flexibility to create a programme that suits your professional development needs in the field of university teaching, and is offered on a part-time basis over five years.

The programme allows you to construct your own developmental pathway through a choice of optional modules. You will do this by engaging with the explicit pedagogic framework that underpins the programme, emphasising the connections between concepts, theory and practice, teaching and research, disciplinary methods, and teachers and students.

On the programme you will analyse issues relating to your everyday teaching practice, share practice and explore solutions with your fellow participants and tutors.

This programme is studied over three academic years and is part-time via distance learning. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE

As part of induction to the programme, you will have a discussion with a personal tutor to help you make the appropriate choices for your professional learning journey based on your previous teaching and learning experience in the higher education context and your developmental aspirations.

A personal tutor will work with you to develop a personalised plan to ensure you get the most from the programme by developing your professional knowledge and skills.

REGISTRATION

As we recognised that you will be working within your own higher education institutions while you study, the programme is offered as part-time registration. It is anticipated that the Diploma would be completed within two years of registration and the Dissertation would normally be completed within an additional year.

You will be registered initially for the MA in Higher Education (180 credits). However, you can choose to step-off at Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) or the Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) Level.

You can decide to study for a general MA in Higher Education or a MA in Higher Education with a specialist pathway. Specialist pathways are only available for the MA in Higher Education (not at the award of Diploma).

If you decide, a pathway is right for you, you will need to take 60 credits from the specialist modules and conduct research within the Research Dissertation module on an area relating to the pathway. The following are the three specialist pathways available:
-Academic Leadership
-Technology Enhanced Learning
-Veterinary Education

If you decide to take the Academic Leadership pathway, you will be awarded for example, 'MA in Higher Education (Academic Leadership)'.

Postgraduate Certificate
The postgraduate certificate is built around the compulsory module of 'Teaching in Your Own Discipline'. You will choose three optional modules that help builds your own professional pathway and suits your needs.

Postgraduate Diploma
For the Postgraduate Diploma, based on your personal/professional development plan, you will choose three further modules that fulfil your personal and professional aims and which strengthens your activities, knowledge and professional values in your career.

You will also do the compulsory module of 'Researching in Higher Education', which aims to help you to start thinking about how to investigate and explore issues that intrigues and challenges you in the Higher Education landscape.

MA
For the MA in Higher Education, you will have to conduct a piece of independent research as part of the compulsory Research Dissertation module.

This allows you to investigate an issue that you have personally selected that will contribute to your growing understanding of your professional practice.

The Leadership in Education programme is designed to critically engage with current thinking and ideas about leadership relevant to all levels of an organisation, and in relation to all roles. There are opportunities to develop specific skills of coaching, mentoring and communication. The relationship between policy, research and practice will be explored and students will engage with approaches to evaluation in the workplace.

The programme is designed to be responsive to the specific cultural, historic and practical context of individual organisations, and of individual participants.

The programme will run as a UEL based programme which will be taught in the evenings following a traditional pattern of delivery. In addition, the programme can be run in schools, or for consortia of schools and other professional education organisations when there is a viable cohort.

The programme can be personalised or have bespoke elements for viable cohorts when delivered in schools or to consortia. Personalisation is through the selection of content, readings, case studies and policies specific to the school context. Bespokeness will come from selecting option modules from other relevant Masters programmes.

Learning, teaching and assessment are tightly aligned with content, learning outcomes and school context. The programme pedagogy is creative in its use of a wide range of strategies, activities and approaches to interaction, with a focus upon dialogic learning and teaching. Advanced standing

It’s possible to enter the programme with advanced standing through the Accreditation of Prior Formal Learning (APFL). Advanced standing can also be claimed through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). This course is flexible in that it offers several entry routes, choices for modular study and appropriate academic targets. Those who have already completed either the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent, if APL requested) or the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Simulation Studies, may enter at Postgraduate Diploma Level. These participants would then successfully complete a further three 20-credit optional modules to achieve a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education (120 M level credits). Normally these modules would be completed part-time within one academic year.

Participants wishing to progress to Masters level must include Module MDM 10 ‘Research Methods & Critical Appraisal’ in their choice of three. A 16000-word Dissertation (as well as a 3000-word draft paper for publication) in the academic field of clinical education completes the Master of Science degree (180 M level credits). This would normally be completed in a further year, but some students with busy NHS jobs find it can take up to two years to complete.

For those who have not yet taken any ‘M Level’ postgraduate study in this area, the normal route would be to take at least two of the the ‘PG Cert Med Ed’ modules in year 1 (MDM 28/140), and then proceed with the PG Diploma/Masters routes in years 2 & 3, as described above.

The overall aim of the course is to promote knowledge of and research into learning, teaching and communication in a clinical context, together with facilitating a reflective awareness of participants’ related educational skills and their ongoing development.

Course Structure

The format of assessment throughout the course is varied: some modules are assessed by more traditional 3,000 word written assignments, centred on a topic relevant to the student’s own practice or in-depth analyses of specific case studies or significant educational events. Others feature the development of specific educational tools (e.g. on–line learning or simulation-based assessment), focussing on more practical aspects of clinical education. Students will also develop a personal educational portfolio of about 5,000 words using an appropriate national professional standards framework i.e. Health Education Academy (HEA) or Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).The Dissertation module involves a personal research project and is assessed by a 16,000 word thesis plus a draft paper for submission for publication in an appropriate academic journal.

Learning and teaching

This programme is research-led but is also informed by professional perspectives in international education. Throughout the programme your prior (international) education experience will be valued as a source of evidence.

Learning and teaching takes place through lectures, workshops and seminars blended with on line learning opportunities and group/ individual study. You will become increasingly independent as the year progresses and as you work towards your Dissertation with the support of an expert supervisor.

Methods of assessment

A variety of formative assessment methods will be used throughout the programme to review your progress and support your further learning. You will have opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and skills using a range of assessment methods.

The Dissertation unit is assessed by a 15,000 word research report.

Assessment of other units will include:

Educators are provided with the opportunity to further their qualifications through professional development. This coursework program aligns with the requirements and specifications of the Australian Quality Framework (AQF) and provides three major areas of expertise relevant to professional educators. This course explores the unique challenges facing educational leaders in the 21st century as they learn to cope with uncertainty and adapt to evolving conditions.

The MA Education: Leadership and Management is designed for those who are interested in becoming, or presently working as, middle and senior managers and leaders in schools and other educational organisations in the UK and internationally. Drawing on internationally based research this course offers a critical and culturally based understanding of leadership as a social and ethical practice.

This course promotes the development of leadership competencies through practice based inquiry in which theories may be applied, or developed, within the workplace. The course will develop individual leadership skills and competencies as well as the capacity to lead and manage change

The course is structured over three trimesters (thirds) and totals 180 credits (90 ECTS). It is available in campus-based mode, low-residency mode or online-only. You can start in September or February and will study for 60 credits per trimester. In your first trimester you will study the MA Education core module Education: Economics, Politics and Society (30 credits) plus your award core module (30 credits). In the second trimester you will study the core module Social Science Research (30 credits), plus two 15-credit elective modules, one of which may be a shared elective from another MA award. In your third trimester you will research and write your Dissertation (60 credits) on a topic relevant to your award. If you take the low residency option, the face-to-face teaching of all modules will take place during two 2-week intensive blocks (typically in September and February).

Core Module:
Education: Economics, Politics and Society (30 credits) explores how education can be understood in a complex and globalised world where it is seen by many governments as a significant factor in economic growth and competition. You will learn how to question the policies and organisations involved in defining the purposes, content and outcomes of education.
Award Core Module:
Leadership in Practice: part 1. (30 credits) explores how leadership is exercised in your own educational setting through analysing a specific example of improvement and change. Taught sessions will provide an understanding of the ways in which leadership impacts on the climate and culture of a school or educational setting you will explore theories of organizational change. You will then undertake a work-based action research project in order to critically evaluate a chnage initiative and your impact as a leader.
Trimester 2
In your second trimester you will study one compulsory core module, and two 15 credit elective modules, one of which may be a shared elective from another MA award. This will total 60 credits.
Compulsory Core Module:
Social Science Research (30 credits) sets educational research within the broader context of the social sciences and introduces a range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and methods from which you can select the most appropriate for your dissertation.
Elective Modules:
Leadership in Practice: part 2. (option 15 credits). An important aspect of leadership development is concerned with the way that our life experiences influence our values, beliefs and practice as a leader. This module explores the narratives that we tell as leaders and how our educational vision is shaped by our past experiences. Drawing on research into ‘learning lives’ you will be supported to write a reflective case study of self that articulates the influences that have shaped your professional identity and will inform your future development.
Leadership principles: context and challenges. (option 15 credits). This module will develop your critical thinking and practical understanding of the principles of leadership. Time will be spent in sessions exploring current international research and thinking in order to challenge and develop an understanding of what consittutes effective leadership within particular contexts.
Leadership and coaching. (shared option 15 credits). Coaching is recognised as a significant, and distinctive, leadership style. This module will help you to gain an understanding of the differences between coaching, mentoring and leadership. You will have an opportunity to develop your coaching skills in your school or setting. These experiences will enable you to reflect critically on what constitutes effective coaching and its value as a leadership style.
Trimester 3
In your third trimester you will research and write your Dissertation (60 credits) on a topic relevant to your award.
Dissertation (60 credits) enables you to study and research an aspect of education theory, policy or practice in depth, guided by an expert to arrive at your own synthesis of a topic to take forward into your career.

Teaching methods

For the campus-based mode of study, some lectures and seminars will take place during the day, whilst others may be in the evening or at weekends. For low-residency students the teaching will be concentrated into two 2-week blocks (typically around 6 hours per day). The course also makes extensive use of online teaching, particularly for the low-residency and online only modes. This will include a combination of individual and shared learning using the Bath Spa University virtual learning environment.

The MA in Education (Leadership) is part-time and aimed at developing your knowledge of leading change within organisations which have education as a key focus. This could include Schools, Early Years settings, FE colleges, local government, prisons, military and private training organisations.

The course provides a dedicated route to an MA in Education (Leadership) for those in management positions (or on a management career path). The course aims to develop both analytical and practical skills and will equip you to critically analyse current practices and processes as well as develop your ownapproaches to effective change.

The course is underpinned by staff research and capitalises on the expertise in education, leadership, management and our Institute for Educational Research (IRED). Assessment

Each unit in this course has its own assessment. Wherever possible, the specific focus of assignments is negotiated individually, in order to ensure that the assignment meets the personal and professional needs of the student. The course provides you with a carefully planned and coherent sequence of learning opportunities that facilitate your development through formative and summative assessments.

At this level the expectations, in terms of the quality of work produced, are high and you will need to take active control of your learning. At Masters level the expectation is that you are an autonomous and confident learner, that you will undertake assessments that are challenging and require mature argument developed from sustained research, and that you will demonstrate fluent and cogent presentation. You are encouraged in your assessments to draw upon an extensive range of sources to demonstrate a deep theoretical understanding and the ability to apply that to current issues and contexts.

The assessments test the ability to construct a reasoned, sustained and coherent argument, and to articulate it fluently, in a range of contexts. You are required to demonstrate an appropriate level of research, of independent argument, and to reference in an appropriate and accurate manner.

Through the assessments designed for individual units, you will practise and reinforce skills in researching, evaluating and synthesising materials with a critical eye; quantitative and qualitative data collection and handling, together with skills associated with conventional academic tasks. Unit assessment is based on specified learning outcomes and threshold standards.

The unit information forms state clearly the aims, objectives and learning outcomes of the unit, and delineate the criteria of assessment for each outcome. The unit assessment feedback offers detailed comment to the student on the assessment piece.

The taught stage of the course (stage 1) requires you to pass 120 credits before progressing to stage 2, the 60 credit dissertation. An alternative to this is if you already have a PG Certificate (60 credits) e.g. PGCE you would be able to complete your qualification with a further 2 x 30 credit units and our Applied Research Methods and Project for stage 2 of your study.

The Management of Special Education in Developing Countries is a full-time programme is for teachers, administrators and non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff who are working in special education in developing countries and who wish to develop their management or leadership expertise. Although most students are not from the EU, this course is also suitable for UK/EU students. The programme combines modules in Special Education with modules in International Studies in Education, using theory and practice from both in order to enable participants to improve management practice in the national context in which they work. A research dissertation also enables participants to put together management and special education in a uniquely relevant way for them.

This International Studies in Education programme has been taught at the School of Education for 50 years, and the School has one of the largest SEN departments in the UK. In consultation with tutors, you will choose modules totalling 100 credits from those available in the International Studies in Education and Special Education programmes, with a minimum of two modules from either field. Occupational therapy practice is concerned with enhancing the daily lives of individuals with a very broad range of physical, mental health or social needs. As an occupational therapist you will work with clients to improve function and enable them to fulfil the demands of their daily lives with greater satisfaction. You will work with people of all ages from all walks of life, in hospital, in the community, in their place of employment or in their home, and have the opportunity to work in a very wide variety of professional practice areas.

The fundamental aim of the MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-registration) programme is to enable you to graduate with a master’s degree in occupational therapy and be eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK. The Degree does not provide eligibility to practice in any other country although the degree is WFOT recognised.

Teaching and learning

MSc in Occupational Therapy is taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy.

Pre-registration Masters students will be taught alongside the undergraduate students in all occupational therapy specific modules. These will be identified with different module numbers and names to those of the undergraduate programme. This dual level teaching in classroom will provide you with the opportunity to learn the core skills and specific attributes of occupational therapy alongside the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy students.

However, the pre-registration Masters students are provided with an enhanced level 7 learning experience with module specific tutorials to explore a more critical and evidence based approach to the subject matter and thus develop professional competence in academic, research and digital literacy, critical thinking and personal self-awareness.

Our approach will require you to actively engage in these Masters level tutorials and become self-directed, innovative, creative and critical learners. Teaching will assist you to construct knowledge through the analysis, synthesis and conceptualisation of your learning experiences, thus developing a lifelong approach to learning. This supports employability in a marketplace that demands adaptability, continuous development and leadership.

You will have the opportunity for face-to-face and virtual learning activities. Our inter-professional module is taken alongside other health and social care pre-registration master's level students, enabling you to prepare for the interdisciplinary work you will encounter in the health and social care environment.

Working at master’s level, you will focus on developing your knowledge in occupational therapy, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

This master's degree will:
- Enable you to be a reflective, proactive, innovative and adaptable occupational therapy practitioner, with the ability to critique research and evaluate the effectiveness of evidence in a wide variety of practice settings.

- Develop a critical understanding of the theory of occupation and teach you to challenge existing models and approaches used in occupational therapy from an informed perspective.

- Provide opportunities to develop your ability to work both independently and as part of a team in the context of social, technological, administrative and policy changes.

Careers

The majority of graduates from the occupational therapy degrees work as qualified and registered occupational therapists, but there are increasing opportunities to work in non-specified professional roles in mental health and community settings. There are also increasing numbers of employment roles that are not explicitly described or advertised as an ‘occupational therapist’ but match the skills specification of an occupational therapist. This is due to the changing nature of health and social care practice and the new and emerging roles and opportunities for occupational therapy.

The Centre for Rehabilitation within the Department of Sport and Health Sciences has strong leadership in the director, Professor Helen Dawes. The Centre brings together research, education and care. It is underpinned by a strong, well-published research group, the Movement Science Group, along with clinical expertise, rehabilitation, knowledge and care of adults and children with neurological conditions. The Master of Education is designed for educators who shall be admitted on the basis of their prior qualifications and who, in most cases, are working in educational roles across diverse settings.
Educators are provided with the opportunity to further their qualifications through professional development. This coursework program aligns with the requirements and specifications of the Australian Quality Framework (AQF) and provides three major areas of expertise relevant to professional educators. The Master of Education does not lead to teacher registration.
The flexible 18 month Master of Education coursework program entails four core subjects, including an enquiry-based project, and provides the opportunity to specialise in up to two majors.

Global Contexts Major

The Global Contexts major has been designed for professionals who are seeking to develop a strategic approach to global practices and strategies. It has been developed in response to the steady growth in globalisation and changing international employment relationships.
Studying this major will expand and upgrade your expertise in globalisation and transnational education. Interested parties include: international and national school employees, managerial and non-managerial global careerists, international human resource management staff, professional managers, self-initiated expatriates, cross cultural team members, foreign hires (third country nationals, and mobility managers).

English band level 2 - the minimum English Language test scores you need are:

If you meet the academic requirements for a course, but not the minimum English requirements, you will be given the opportunity to take an English program to improve your skills in addition to an offer to study a degree at JCU. The JCU degree offer will be conditional upon the student gaining a certain grade in their English program. This combination of courses is called a packaged offer.
JCU’s English language provider is Union Institute of Languages (UIL). UIL have teaching centres on both the Townsville and Cairns campuses.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2– Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.
