Description

Through our Leadership & Development MSc, you will investigate various forms of leadership from key individuals to institutions, including states and key international development organisations and networks. You will study the various patterns of development in developing societies, with some references to emerging economies and the developed world, in great detail, through the perspective of leadership. In addition to the focus on development and leadership, our course investigates area studies as it cross-references various developing regions including Africa, Asia and Latin America. Our course provides you with high-quality postgraduate training that builds your critical analysis skills and your independent judgement on leadership and development.

If you have an interest in understanding how leadership patterns interact with historical factors, local cultures and global influences as they inform and are informed by development outcomes and processes across the world, or if you are interested in the debate which surrounds the interaction between leadership and development globally, particularly in the global south, this course is ideal for you.

Course purpose

Our course provides high-quality postgraduate training that builds the capacity for critical analysis, independent judgement and engagement with critical audiences on leadership and development.

It will appeal to students with an interest in pertinent debates on the interaction between leadership and development globally, with an emphasis on the global south. As such, you will develop your skills for a career in academia, public and private sectors as well as with non-governmental and international organisations among others.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

For every 20-credit module we will typically provide 20 hours of lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 180 hours of independent study. For your dissertation, you will usually have 10 hours of discussion time with a tutor, and you will undertake 590 hours of independent study.

As part of their two-year schedule, part-time students typically take the Leadership & Society modules and 40 credits of optional modules in Year 1, and the Dissertation module and 40 credits of optional modules in Year 2. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Assessment

We assess our Leadership & Society module through two essays and one seminar presentation. We assess our 20-credit modules through two essays each. We will assess your dissertation through a 1,000-word dissertation outline and a 14,000-word piece of writing.

Career prospects

Our graduates use the skills and knowledge that they develop over the course of this course to build careers in further academic research, teaching, public and private sectors, transnational corporations, international organisations (UN, EU, AU and worldwide regional organisations) and non-governmental organisations.

AIM

This innovative programme has been designed in consultation with employers and academics to provide students with:

• in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of leadership in the context of sustainable development and an ability to identify and critically evaluate the role of leadership for sustainable development within a range of organisational contexts

• knowledge of the principles and core themes associated with sustainable development and an ability to critically evaluate best practice within a range of organisational sectors

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Course Content
The innovative programme embraces action based learning, facilitated through a series of work placements and group project to foster critical thinking and promote the use of initiative for problem solving and decision making. The course is a full time programme comprising seven modules over twelve months.

The course structure is as follows:

Semester 1:

• Leadership for Sustainable Development: to explore theories and practices of leadership in the context of sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:1 to consider core themes underpinning sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:2 to consider policies and strategies for sustainable development



Semesters 2 & 3:

• Sustainable Development in NGOs (Placement 1): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Non Governmental Organisations

• Sustainable Development in Governance (Placement 2): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Governance

• Sustainable Development in Business (Placement 3): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Business

• Effective Leadership: Group Project: to engage in a project to promote sustainable development through ‘experiential learning’.
Assessment

A range of assessment methods are used including research projects, group work, presentations, reports and essays, exam and seminar contribution.

CAREERS IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Graduates from this programme have developed successful careers upon completion of the MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development. For example, past students have gone on to gain relevant employment with a range of organisations in the public, private and non-governmental organisations sectors. The programme is targeted at healthcare professionals working in a clinical role (e.g. allied health professionals, clinical scientists, nurses, doctors) and those working in a non-clinical role (e.g. social workers, patient advocates, voluntary sector).

Three specialist pathways are available which enable you to tailor the programme to meet your individual needs:

What will I study?

The programme will provide you with opportunities for in-depth self awareness, critical reflection on your own style of leadership and leadership skills and learning to be dynamic in decision-making. It will provide you with the knowledge and skills to effectively implement change and inform your practice with an evidence base. There will also be an opportunity to plan a research proposal and undertake a project utilising your leadership and change management skills in the final year of your study.

In addition you are able to access optional modules from the existing postgraduate portfolio from the Faculty of Health and Social Care or from the MSc Leadership and Management Development programme (delivered by Edge Hill University’s Business School). There is a close working relationship with the Business School, with the intention to maximise opportunities for accessing appropriate expertise across the University.

How will I study?

The programme will be delivered through lead lectures, workshops, seminars, Action Learning Sets, group work and critical debates to provide a framework to underpin the development of critical thinking and sharing in the learning process. The approach will be ‘flexible’ – blended learning where face-to-face sessions are the predominant delivery method supported by the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The attendance is daytime, approximately three hours per module, however some sessions will be online.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment strategy will focus on the synthesis and critical application of theory to practice in relation to your leadership role. A variety of assessment strategies will be utilised to provide balance including essays, presentations, a leadership development plan, reflective diaries, seminars, online discussion and the undertaking of a project. You will be assessed both formatively to support your development and summatively to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes.

The different ways in which systemic leadership and consulting practices respond to organisational challenges and personal, relational and development issues is a key element of this course, which will help you develop insights into systemic organisational practice and theory.

Admissions testing

Although the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is not a standard requirement of our admissions process, strong verbal reasoning and numerical abilities are critical for the MBA and we may ask you to undertake such a test.

Competence in English

The MBA programme is highly interactive and requires a high level of competence in English speaking, writing, reading and understanding.
A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS is required for applicants whose first language is not English. We may consider applicants who fall slightly below these standards if they're willing to undertake pre-sessional study.

Computer competence

In order to undertake the Diploma/MBA you need to be competent in word processing, the use of spreadsheets and in report writing.

Learning & teaching

A mix of teaching and learning methods are used. There is distance learning via texts, case studies, exercises and tutor support. There's also residential days at the Leadership Trust Foundation and intensive seminars at Strathclyde Business School.
The whole programme requires about 1,800 hours of course and workshop attendance, private study and project work over three years. You should allow five to ten hours a week for private study.

Sustainable rural development is seen as critical to survival of rural areas at a global level. Central to the success of any rural development programme, is a skilled team of experts to think strategically about rural development and ensure its delivery. This graduate programme will be of direct relevance to those interested in becoming leaders in rural development and promoting sustainability in the rural sector. It will also be of interest to those currently employed in rural development.

AIM
The Diploma course is strongly inter-disciplinary. It aims to develop an understanding of the underlying processes of economic, social and environmental practice with an emphasis on sustainability. Thus, as well as teaching the theories and concepts underlying rural development, the course places strong emphasis on the application of theory to development problems in rural areas, with an emphasis on the EU.


STRUCTURE AND CONTENT
Students on the full-time diploma course are required to take a total of four taught modules and a double module Work Experience Placement during the academic year from September to June.


Global Sustainability, Local Solutions and Rural Policy (single module)
This module explores the history of Rural
Development locally and provides an introduction to European Union, national and regional policies and strategies. Students will become familiar with key policies such as the Common Agricultural Policy, EU Rural Development Programmes, Rural Development Programme, and a range of EU legislation relating to rural policies.

Students will have had the opportunity to develop the following knowledge:

• CAP reform, Decoupling and Single Farm Payment
• Use of Community Initiatives such as LEADER
• Diversification of the rural economy
• Rural Champion, Rural White Paper and Rural Proofing
• Agri-Environment Programmes, Countryside Management, Forestry and Organic Farming schemes

Rural Development: Rhetoric and Reality (single module)
This module aims to provide students with the basic skills necessary to take responsibility for a project management process from start to finish. The following are the main areas covered.
• Fundraising and income generation
• Social inclusion: key concepts
• Rural poverty
• Physical Planning for Rural Areas
• Sustainable Rural Tourism
• Community Development

Foundations for Sustainable Development (i) (single module)
This is a broad ranging module exploring the major global issues in environmental sustainability, such as Climate Change, Biodiversity, Waste Management, Water Management, Renewable Energy. The module will introduce concepts and methodologies such as Environmental Economics, Ecological Footprinting and Environmental Impact Analysis as well as moral and ethical ways of considering sustainable development problems.

Methods for Rural and Sustainability Research (single module)
The purpose of this module is to provide students with a basic understanding of the various methods which are used in both rural and sustainable development practice and research.
The module is intended to complement other modules in the curriculum by providing students with a range of techniques which can be utilised in gathering knowledge, undertaking analyses, reporting findings and applying knowledge. Formal lectures are supplemented by case studies and visiting speakers.


Work Placement/Internship (double module)
Each student will work with a University tutor to identify and undertake a specific piece of work either in their own workplace or in a suitable co-operating organisation that has a rural or sustainability interest. The placement must normally be completed during years 1 & 2 of the degree and will be guided by an agreed set of learning objectives and work tasks. Assessment will be based on the student’s diary or log, a final report prepared by the student and an oral presentation to students, staff and the placement mentor. This internship will offer students the opportunity to combine theory with practical tasks and to develop professional work habits.

The aim is to ensure, by the end of the programme, adequate coverage of the range of disciplines relevant to sustainable rural development. All taught modules will be assessed by a combination of continuous assessment and written and oral examination.


PROGRESSION TO MSc
Students who attain the required standard in the six modules and submit a satisfactory research proposal may progress from the Graduate Diploma to the MSc by completion of a dissertation which is equivalent to three modules. This element of the programme involves original research including a literature review, data gathering and analysis. The research will be carried out under the supervision of a member of the academic staff from July to September (inclusive).

The Leadership for the Health Professions course is suitable for doctors, nurses, academic staff and other health professionals at all stages of their career (including trainees) with a leadership or management role or those aspiring to one.

The Leadership for the Health Professions is a modular programme and can be taken as a separate Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma as well as a full Master level qualification. It has been designed specifically for busy working professionals combining face to face contact days supplemented by online learning and tutor, mentor and peer support. The campus-based course is delivered in Swansea and Leicester.

The Medical School offers the following the M Level modules for the Leadership for the Health Professions programme as standalone opportunities for prospective students to undertake continued professional development (CPD) in the area of clinical and educational leadership:
