Key Features of Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care

- According to the requirements of the commissioner this is a closed programme available only to NHS Wales Graduate Trainee Managers, recruited and selected by Academi Wales who lead on the NHS Graduate Management Scheme.

- This programme in Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care will utilise existing research, teaching and practice expertise in health care management, health economics, health service research and health and social policy within Swansea University and draw on local and regional associations and networks within the Health Boards, Local Government and the third sector to enhance ‘real world’ application.

- The MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is aligned with the NHS Wales Core Competence Framework for Managers and Supervisors (Welsh Government, 2014).

- It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

The MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care programme is designed to equip NHS Wales Graduate Management Trainees with a critical and analytical understanding of:

- the broad context of the NHS in Wales
- the complexity of public service environments and the challenges of enduring austerity
- demographic pressures
- increasing public demands and expectations faced by the NHS and other public services in Wales, the UK and internationally

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care course will reflect the imperative of making the most of scarce resources to deliver the best possible outcomes for all. This forms a cornerstone of Prudent Health Principles which are the basis of a cultural shift in health and social care in Wales (Bevan Commission 2015, Bradley & Willson 2014).

A comprehensive knowledge of theories, models and concepts of leadership, management, change and innovation will provide the graduates with the tools to reflect, analyse and critically review their own practice, bringing together academic and experiential learning. Inclusive and collaborative learning will be facilitated through participatory and interactive methods.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates will be equipped with a sound knowledge and critical understanding of health financing, resource management, improvement science and governance and the principles, methods and application of economic evaluation.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care Course Structure

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is a two year, part-time course (2016-18). There are six 20 credit modules, each run over eight weeks in part one. Students will have face to face teaching for 25 hours per module. The modules are taught over three residential days in week one of the module, followed up with webinars/seminars in weeks two and three.

Part two consists of a 60 credit dissertation module, and will be completed in the second year.

Careers and Employability

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care students will be employed as trainee general managers in Health Boards across Wales from September 2016 and will have access to a two-year work based learning programme delivered by Academi Wales that will build their core managerial capability, staff engagement skills, financial acumen, and ability to deliver change and improvements. This Master’s award is a component of the NHS Graduate Management Trainee Scheme: trainees will study towards a postgraduate level qualification, the MSc/ PGDip/PGCert Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

Successful exit from the training scheme will include the award of MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates from this scheme (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

In a world where managing and leading change has become critical, the Change Management Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) will set you apart from colleagues with standard management qualifications.

- Managing the Human Aspects of Change
This module is recommended for managers engaging with the challenges arising out of managing people during times of significant change. The module encourages engagement with the often neglected human aspects of managing change, informed by understanding the involvement of individuals and groups within all successful changes.

Organisational cultures, which are a reflection of the attitudes, values and beliefs of organisational members, can either aid or impede change. Participants will gain practical skills and tools both to analyse these cultures and influence cultural change. It helps managers make appropriate judgements in the absence of complete data and to reach meaningful conclusions as to the likely impact of global changes on their organisation.

- The Leadership of Change
This module is recommended for managers either involved in or anticipating leading change initiatives at all levels within organisations.

We now understand how successful change initiatives require a combination of effective leadership and effective management. The module will introduce you to leading change theories, models and concepts which inform these contemporary debates. It addresses how leaders communicate change, how they respond to and rethink resistance to change and how power and politics always informs leadership activities. By the end of the module you will appreciate the challenges of leading change and the potential positive difference that the effective leadership of change can make.

- Systems and Complexity Approaches to Change Management
This module is recommended for managers grappling with the unpredictable and repercussive effects of managing change under challenging circumstances.

Change initiatives are often couched in project methodology terms, yet controlled project outcomes may remain elusive. The module examines action, effect, feedback and impact on initial conditions from a systems perspective. This contributes to an understanding of how and why localised change management projects may often diverge from planned expectations. The module explores the explanatory capabilities of such academic approaches and their potential value to practitioners.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction management. This particular programme benefits from being rooted in a long 40 year history of delivery. The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. - People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

Research skills are important in business as well as academia. Post Graduate Major Project
This final module builds on the knowledge that you have developed through the course, giving you a chance to produce an in-depth academic study into a topic of your choice. This part-time, work-based course will help you develop the leadership and management abilities necessary to deliver high-quality health care services. It is aimed at experienced clinicians who want to combine study with full-time careers.

The Management (Leadership for Clinicians) MSc places emphasis on areas of management particularly relevant to the public services, and develops individuals who think innovatively, negotiate difficult situations and wish to enhance organisational performance. Who is it for?

The course is for high potential managers for international business and leadership roles. Objectives

The MSc in Health Management provides strategic insights and business skills for those working across the worldwide health sector. The focus is on innovation and implementation with client-facing learning emphasising forward thinking.

Learning on the course is interactive, developing student’s business awareness, leadership and management capabilities; skills in project management and working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Throughout the course students engage in client-facing activities applying taught health management skills in management consultancy, internships, technology transfer and commercialisation projects.

Practical and relevant industry discussions are born from an international student body, working across different management and professional backgrounds, alongside speakers from the professional and scientific communities who promote practical industry relevant discussion and insights.

The course aims to enable students to engage in cross-sector and multi-disciplinary working, improve their team working abilities and client facing skills to achieve careers at the highest level within the international health sector.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

The MSc Health Management is based in City’s Franklin Building close to the City of London, the School of Health Sciences, and Cass Business School.

Our course will equip experienced professionals with the knowledge and capability to meet the demands of data centre leadership.

Data centres are fast-moving, complex businesses that need decisive, knowledgeable leaders. Our MA course aims to give practising data centre managers the opportunity to develop and advance their leadership abilities.
