There will also be an opportunity to learn about research methodologies and undertake a project utilising your leadership and change management skills.

How will I study?

The programme will be delivered through lead lectures, workshops, seminars, master classes, Action Learning Sets, group work and critical debates to provide a framework to underpin the development of critical thinking and sharing in the learning process. The approach will be ‘flexible’ – blended learning where face-to-face sessions are the predominant delivery method supported by the University’s Virtual Learning Environment.

The aim across all pathways is to promote a values-driven, authentic approach to leadership and to develop effective change agents who are able to improve the quality of care. Throughout each pathway, reflection will be applied to determine the type of leader you are; the type of leader you aspire to be (and why); and the action that will be taken to further your leadership development. This will be supported by group work, debate, action learning sets, coaching, self-awareness tools, work shadowing opportunities, master-classes, coaching and student-led seminars. The aim is to create a learning community conducive to critical reflection.

The attendance is daytime, approximately three hours per module, however some modules incorporate online units of study. In addition we provide work shadowing and one-to-one coaching opportunities.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment strategy will focus on the synthesis and critical application of theory to practice in relation to your current or future leadership role. A variety of assessment strategies will be utilised to provide balance including essays, presentations, portfolios, a leadership development plan, reflective diaries, seminars, online discussion and the undertaking of a project. You will be assessed both formatively to support your development and summatively to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes.

Who will be teaching me?

The programme team comprises staff from the Faculty of Health and Social Care, the Evidence Based Practice Research Centre and Edge Hill Business School, many of whom publish in international journals and present at national and international conferences.

An additional network of executive/senior professionals within health and social care will provide you with opportunities to learn from their experience through coaching and work shadowing opportunities.

The module presents multiple opportunities to explore complex cause and effect relationships systematically and creatively. It helps managers make appropriate judgements in the absence of complete data and to reach meaningful conclusions as to the likely impact of global changes on their organisation.

The Leadership of Change

This module is recommended for managers either involved in or anticipating leading change initiatives at all levels within organisations.

We now understand how successful change initiatives require a combination of effective leadership and effective management. The module will introduce you to leading change theories, models and concepts which inform these contemporary debates. It addresses how leaders communicate change, how they respond to and rethink resistance to change and how power and politics always informs leadership activities.

By the end of the module you will appreciate the challenges of leading change and the potential positive difference that the effective leadership of change can make.

Systems and Complexity Approaches to Change Management

This module is recommended for managers grappling with the unpredictable and repercussive effects of managing change under challenging circumstances.

Change initiatives are often couched in project methodology terms, yet controlled project outcomes may remain elusive. The module examines action, effect, feedback and impact on initial conditions from a systems perspective. This contributes to an understanding of how and why localised change management projects may often diverge from planned expectations. Course details

The programme is structured into three components; six core foundation subjects (60 credits), one of four specialist pathways (60 credits), and a dissertation (60 credits). The MSc Management programme is assessed by individual coursework, group coursework, and examinations.

Coursework can take the form of short essays, extended essays, reports and presentations, through which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Taught modules contribute two thirds of the overall degree (120 credits). The final assessment is the 60 credit dissertation (10,000 – 12,000 words), where students conduct their own research aligned to their pathway under the guidance of a supervisor.

Students undertaking the Entrepreneurship & Innovation pathway will also have the opportunity to explore starting-up their own business.

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Completion of your final project takes place throughout the summer after teaching finishes. You submit your project in October and receive your MSc award in December.

International Study Visit

International management and leadership are at the heart of this course. You will work in small, multinational teams to develop international capabilities and build your global network.

Your tutor-led study visit to a European partner organisation will give you an international perspective to your study. Previous students have visited and heard from leaders at Xerox, Mercedes Benz, Carrefour and the European Parliament.

Careers and employability

With an emphasis on understanding the political context in which public services operate, the Management (Public Services) MSc will prepare you for careers in management consultancy, change management and some areas of functional management, for example in high-tech companies as well as the public sector.

The course will also prove valuable if you are interested in starting your own business or pursuing a career as a business negotiator, commercial interpreter, lecturer or researcher.

Course delivery is highly flexible and includes a mixture of classroom and work based learning, so you can fit your career development around your work commitments. The programme is structured into three components; six core foundation subjects (60 credits), one of four specialist pathways (60 credits), and a dissertation (60 credits). The MSc Management programme is assessed by individual coursework, group coursework, and examinations.

Coursework can take the form of short essays, extended essays, reports and presentations, through which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Taught modules contribute two thirds of the overall degree (120 credits). The final assessment is the 60 credit dissertation (10,000 – 12,000 words), where students conduct their own research aligned to their pathway under the guidance of a supervisor.

The MSc Health Management is based in City's Franklin building, close to the School of Health Sciences, Cass Business School and major centres of medical leadership.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is provided by leading academics in the fields of business and the health care sector as well as respected guest speakers from the health industry and scientific community who join us to share experiences, and insights on future trends across the health sector.

Course delivery is approximately:

  • 40% Interactive learning in teams

The assessment strategy reflects the management task, with a wide range of assessments allowing flexibility to tailor business knowledge to career needs. Collaborative group assessments emphasise communication and influencing skills as well as providing opportunities to address larger inter-connected challenges. Written assignments emphasise the principles of management and the core business functions and develop skills in organisation analysis and preparing business reports. Exams focus on specific applied skill sets for managers and leaders.

The health management consultancy project embodies the client-facing emphasis of the course, and the approach to assessment.

Modules

The MSc Health Management comprises seven modules and a 12-15,000 word health sector dissertation.

The emphasis is on practical and applied business skills, looking across the health sector. The outlook is international. From health services to pharma, to management consultancy, the course develops a wide range of industry relevant business skills.

There are opportunities to participate in technology transfer and commercialisation projects. A health management consultancy project applies MHM skills in a client-facing project. The Intern Development Programme offers further opportunities to apply learning.

In this role, you will be responsible for some of the most exciting, dynamic and inspiring developments across a range of industries. Open to business, management or economics graduates, this MSc will build on your existing skills and knowledge and develop them to Masters level.

The programme introduces students to advanced management concepts through a combination of core foundation subjects before selecting one of four specialist pathways. Students also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to their requirements.

Course details

The programme is structured into three components; six core foundation subjects (60 credits), one of four specialist pathways (60 credits), and a dissertation (60 credits). The MSc Management programme is assessed by individual coursework, group coursework, and examinations.

Coursework can take the form of short essays, extended essays, reports and presentations, through which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Taught modules contribute two thirds of the overall degree (120 credits). The final assessment is the 60 credit dissertation (10,000 – 12,000 words), where students conduct their own research aligned to their pathway under the guidance of a supervisor.

Students undertaking the Entrepreneurship & Innovation pathway will also have the opportunity to explore starting-up their own business.

Learning and teaching

The home of Birmingham Business School is University House, conveniently situated on the edge of the main campus opposite the main gate of the University. To the elegant old house of 1908, that houses staff rooms and social space, a new multi-million pound state of-the-art teaching and learning complex has been added giving a unique combination of historic elegance and cutting-edge facilities.

Our students benefit from advanced teaching technology. All fifteen lecture theatres and seminar rooms contain comprehensive audio-visual equipment and sound systems, as well as wireless connectivity and data projection. Three large PC clusters add to computing facilities already available to students across the campus. The main lecture theatre, seating 200, is often utilised outside term-time as a conference facility for local industry.

Birmingham Business School’s brand new Postgraduate Teaching Centre opened its doors to students in autumn 2016. The building is called the Alan Walters Building after the noted economist of the same name. The high quality facilities provide a dedicated space for the Business School’s postgraduate students, and includes communal areas for studying and group work, which will look out over the Green Heart when completed in 2019.

We know that effective leadership and management does not happen by chance. This practice-related course is aimed at all health care professionals who want to develop the knowledge, skills and qualities to be an effective health care leader. This leadership and management course is designed to give you the confidence to try new and creative approaches to the workplace, deal with complex leadership situations and provide effective patient and service outcomes.

COURSE STRUCTURE

TEACHING

This course is delivered on a modular basis. You will attend study days throughout the duration of the module. You will be provided with opportunities to contextualise all leadership learning to your own health care organisation. You can study the course on a part-time or full-time basis (international students are only able to apply for the full-time route). If you study full-time, you will study more than one module at a time.

ASSESSMENT

The course allows for a variety of assessments, depending on the module you will be undertaking, and include:

  • Written assignments
  • Patchwork text assessment
  • Presentations
  • Writing of a business case
  • Vica voco (presentation and justification of the business case)
  • Critical commentary to understand own leadership and management personal development

Additional support is available through Blackboard, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which can be used via the internet. Not only will you have easy access to course materials such as handbooks, lecture handouts, and videos it will also give you the opportunity to participate in discussion boards and online exchanges with staff and fellow students.

Similarly the content of the course will assist you in providing quality care for patients and lead service improvement utilising recognised tools and techniques.

Students already studying on the course report how their leadership development went hand in hand with the work-based and work- related learning that they have undertaken. Students describe how their leadership skills have been enhanced through application of learning within their own organisation. Self assessment of their own role as leader has revealed an enhanced level of understanding about the context of the organisation, decision-making, strategy development and implementation. Furthermore they learnt how strategic planning is undertaken within their own organisations.

Students realised that networking with people who could assist them deal with a leadership situation was so important to their role that they then purposefully sought out individuals in order to establish relevant links. For others the networking activity increased the students’ confidence to seek out work-based relationships with people in the organisation that they would never have considered in the past.

This in turn positively influenced leadership development whereby the students developed a conscious awareness of their role, skills, skill level and style of leadership that gets the best result.
