While the rate of deterioration and disappearance of heritage sites has accelerated due to acceleration of human progress, major technological breakthroughs have occurred to enable digital preservation, i.e. 3D digital capture has been developed allowing high definition, high accuracy, and high productivity associated with digital documentation. This technology has been adopted worldwide and over 3,000 international service providers are available to deploy this technology to facilitate the preservation of heritage sites. In addition, major innovations in digital image processing, 3D modelling software, broadband access, and computer hardware capabilities have allowed worldwide public access to voluminous data and information systems including 3D visualisation.

The

MSc in Visualisation (International Heritage)

is a specialist pathway in the realm of 3D visualisation at DDS. This course aims to develop the knowledge and skill sets required to deliver and conduct digital preservation of world heritage sites and to create a unique opportunity to combine architecture and heritage with state of the art digital technologies, including 3D laser scanning, digital reconstruction of historic sites and artefacts, interaction and visualisation using virtual reality facilities. It allows an ideal opportunity for documentation, maintenance, and preservation of significant cultural sites and physical heritage assets, and to reconstruct them in a real-time 3D environment for use in tourism, art, education, entertainment and science.

This pathway will enable students to understand the process of creating original 3D datasets of cultural objects and sites, to reconstruct and present immersive visualisation with interactive narratives and provide a novel approach to foster multi-disciplinary study in computer science, history, geography, culture study, archaeology, architecture, the build environment, art and design and tourist management.

The programme aims to develop the knowledge and skill sets required to deliver and conduct digital preservation of world heritage sites and to create a unique opportunity to combine architecture and heritage with state of the art digital technologies, including 3D laser scanning, digital reconstruction of historic sties and artefacts, interaction and visualisation using virtual reality facilities. The International Heritage pathway emerged as a result of successful strategic research collaborations between the DDS and a number of partners in cultural heritage. DDS has several long-term partnerships with industry and governmental organisations and a world-leading portfolio of work. DDS and Historic Scotland have formed the Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualisation (CDDV) which specialises in the precise documentation and 3D representation of heritage objects, architecture and environments using state of the art, high resolution laser scanning technology and 3D visualisation software. The CDDV promotes and celebrates Scotland’s cultural heritage at home and abroad and enhance Scotland’s reputation for developing world class and innovative research and development. It is delivering the digital documentation of the five Scottish UNESCO World Heritage Sites and five International Heritage Sites in a five-year project known as the Scottish Ten.

The MSc in Visualisation (International Heritage) provides a high level taught programme to those emerging from a wide range of disciplines. This places graduates in a leading global competitive position to advance in research, academia, governmental and commercial organisations, gaining a greater understanding of techniques that may assist in digital heritage practices.

Although just one intake per year in September, students can attend this programme on a part-time basis.

Key Information

As preparation for the MSc if you are offered a place, you will be expected to revise your knowledge of mathematics in certain topics such as trigonometry, geometry and differential calculus if you have not studied these for some time. The most comprehensive text to use would be "Engineering Mathematics" by K.A. Stroud (6th Edition), but many other text books covering an equivalent level of mathematics are also available.

Students are trained in the techniques and methodology of data acquisition, and develop skills to apply those techniques to specific problems and to analyse the quality of results. Emphasis is placed on understanding the principles that underlie the analysis and use of spatial data.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules in term one, followed by two core modules and two specialist options in term two, and a research project.

Are you interested in satellite positioning and laser scanning? The master's programme in Surveying, Planning and Land Management with specialisation in Surveying and Mapping is targeted at science and engineering students who want to work with methods and technologies used for positioning and/or mapping of objects on or near the surface of the earth.
This programme will provide you with theories and practical knowledge on how to use positioning/mapping technologies such as satellite positioning, photogrammetry, remote sensing and laser scanning. After completing the programme, you will be able to analyse and solve real world problems related to positioning/mapping.

It takes two years to attain a Master of Science (MSc) in Surveying, Planning and Land Management with specialisation in Surveying and Mapping, and during this time you will meet a wide range of teachers who will present you with new knowledge in key areas.

The educational programme is internationally oriented, and attracts Danish as well as international students. Furthermore the educational programme offers the opportunity of an internship or/and an external study as well as study trips inside and outside Denmark during the 3rd semester.

The MSc by Research Laser Physics enables students to pursue a one year individual programme of research. The Laser Physics programme would normally terminate after a year. However, under appropriate circumstances, this first year of research can also be used in a progression to Year 2 of a PhD degree.

You will be fully integrated into one of our established research groups and participate in research activities such as seminars, workshops, laboratories, and field work.

Our two research groups, Particle Physics Theory (PPT) and Atomic, Molecular and Quantum Physics (AMQP), deliver impact with commercial benefits both nationally and internationally, complemented by a public engagement programme with a global reach.

Economic impacts are realised by the Department’s Analytical Laser Spectroscopy Unit (ALSU) which, since 1993, has worked with companies developing products eventually sold to customers in the nuclear power industry and military, both in the UK and overseas, and in the global aerospace industry. Computational particle physics work performed by the PPT group has spun-off a computer benchmarking tool, BSMBench, used by several leading software outfits, and has led to the establishment of a start-up company.

The AMQP group’s work on trapping and investigating antihydrogen has generated great media interest and building on this we have developed a significant and on-going programme of public engagement. Activities include the development of a bespoke software simulator (Hands on Antihydrogen) of the antimatter experiment for school students.

The Physics Department carries out world-leading research in experimental and theoretical physics.

The results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 show that over 80% of the research outputs from both the experimental and theoretical groups were judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent.

AMQP Group

The Atomic, Molecular and Quantum Physics Group comprises academic staff, postdoctoral officers and postgraduate research students. Its work is supported by grants from EPSRC, the EU, The Royal Society, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and various industrial and government sources. There are two main fields of research: Atomic, Molecular and Laser Physics and Nanoscale Physics.

PPT Group

The Particle Physics Theory Group has fourteen members of staff, in addition to postdoctoral officers and research students. It is the fourth largest particle physics theory group in the UK, and is supported mainly by STFC, but also has grants from EPSRC, the EU, Royal Society and Leverhulme Trust. The group recently expanded by hiring two theoretical cosmologists (Ivonne Zavala and Gianmassimo Tasinato). -The programme is split into two semesters and a summer session. One semester will be based in the Business School and is aimed at developing knowledge and skills of management principles and techniques. An applied approach is adopted, with an emphasis on an informed critical evaluation of information, and the subsequent application of concepts and tools to the core areas of business and management.
-The semester in Geomatics allows you to focus on land and hydrographic surveying, or GIS and cartography. Your programme will be customised depending on your background and interests.
-While taking advanced courses in Geomatics you will have benefit from access to the latest surveying equipment, including GPS and Terrestrial Laser Scanning, and industry standard processing software, GIS and graphic packages as part of this programme.
-You will attend either a week long survey field course or the three-day GIS Research UK conference as part of the programme (included in fees).

Career opportunities exist in both the private and public sectors and there are lots of possibilities for those with Surveying and Mapping skills. Positions include GIS specialist, ranging from support in large corporations (banking, insurance, retail), environmental consultancies, local authorities, utility companies, or mapping specialist with software house or geoinformation data provider. There is currently a very high demand for surveyors, especially in hydrographic survey, in support of offshore oil and renewable energy engineering and maintenance. In addition to the offshore energy industry, land surveyors are in demand in many parts of the world to support mining operations, major civil engineering projects and to provide surveying services for Land Registration.

A chance to study a top UK Masters in China

The course is designed for students who wish to develop the understanding and working knowledge of the principles and applications of a variety of surveying devices and techniques.

Versions of this MSc have been running at the University of Nottingham, UK for almost 20 years. This course runs entirely at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. This course provides students with the ability to appreciate and apply state of the art engineering surveying techniques within apractical context. The course includes the principles behind surveying such as reference systems, and geodesy, as well as the techniques and equipment used in engineering surveying, photogrammetry and satellite positioning systems such as GPS.

In addition to the formal part of the course, we run practical classes that allow students to see and learn how to use and operate a very wide variety of state of the art surveying equipment and software, including laser scanners, servo driven total stations, RTK and Network RTK GPS, digital and analogue photogrammetry, LiDAR, Sar and InSAR.

Students will develop:

Practical Field Course - the finale of the taught aspect of the course is the surveying field course, which brings together all the taught aspects through a week long series of practical tasks.

Individual Project

Once you have completed the modules, you will undertake a supervised research project over the summer term. Students receive dedicated supervision from staff members. This is a key component of the degree, affording students the opportunity to conduct independent research which maybe related to their employment.
