The programme integrates theory with work-based clinical placements with adults and children with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. The programme has an excellent reputation, and over 90% of graduates are working in SLT-related posts within six months of qualifying.

Degree information

Students learn to apply knowedge from a range of academic subjects to speech and language therapy practice. Innovative and authentic learning methods develop necessary skills such as team-working, assessment and therapy, self-evaluation. The research-based curriculm promotes strong research skills, enabling students to evaluate and add to the evidence-base for the profession. The programme prepares students well for future leadership roles.

Students undertake modules to the value of 360 credits.

The programme comprises twelve core modules. Students register for six modules in year one (totalling 165 credits) and six modules in year two (195 credits, including a 60-credit research project). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 8,000–10,000 words. Students also present their project orally to a group of peers.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials, workshops, supervised clinical placements, practical classes and self-directed learning. Collaborative peer-working features strongly throughout. A variety of assessment methods are used, including coursework, presentations, clinical vivas, written examinations and practice-based assessment on placement.

Placement
Students attend both weekly and block placements, from the start of course working alongside qualified SLTs in a wide range of settings including hospitals, community, schools and charities. Placements are organised such that each student gains a breadth of experience. Students undertake over 700 hours of supervised clinical practice over the two year course, well above RCSLT recommendations.

Careers

Most graduates work as speech and language therapists with adults and children with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties, such as people with autism spectrum disorder, specific language or learning difficulties, people who have had strokes or head injuries. They work in the NHS, for example in hospitals, community health centres, specialist centres or domicilairy services. Many graduates work in education settings, such as mainstream or specialist schools and children's centres. Emerging areas of work are youth justice and dementia services. Graduates are well placed to take up further research and to develop into specialist SLTs.

This course is for people with a relevant degree seeking to refocus their studies into the area of speech and language therapy. It will enable you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) to practise as a speech and language therapist in the UK.

As a speech and language therapist, you will assess, diagnose and treat children and adults with a wide range of
communication difficulties. This will include developmental disorders and speech and language problems resulting from injury, stroke and disease. You will also develop strong practical skills as well as a sound understanding of the theory of speech and language therapy.

There is a major clinical studies (ie placement) element to this course and clinical work is underpinned by modules
in linguistics, psychology and biological and medical sciences. Although every effort is made to arrange summer
block placements to suit students’ circumstances, this is not always possible and students must be prepared to be
flexible about placement location and timing. Students are responsible for any travel and/or accommodation costs
incurred during placements.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching will include a mix of lectures, tutorials, student-led seminars, clinical placement experience, case study analysis and individual project work. Emphasis will be placed on integrating clinical and university based learning opportunities and on independent study. Your performance will be assessed by a combination of course work including essays, reports, presentations, vivas and examinations, as well as clinical practical assessments.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance at placement is compulsory and your attendance at QMU-based modules is expected.

Classes will be spread over the whole week, except for placement days when you will be off campus. This is a full-time course, with the expectation that classes, independent study and placement together require 35-40 hours of dedicated time each week.

Links with industry/professional bodies

The course provides graduates, including those who complete the PgDip, with eligibility to register with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Health and Care Professions Council to practise in the UK.

Speech and language therapists work with people of all ages who experience communication and swallowing difficulties, enabling them to maximise their independence in their social, academic and working lives. Successful completion of our course leads to eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a speech and language therapist; a pre-registration course is essential to begin a career in this area of therapy.

This is a two-year fast-track programme for graduates with a related degree (psychology; language and linguistics; social science; biological sciences; medical sciences or equivalent). It is a client-focused programme which uses problem-based learning methods to integrate theory and clinical practice. You will undertake day visits and blocks of practice education with speech and language therapists in the workplace.

Our course is continuously developed to reflect contemporary health and social care practice, and clients and voluntary groups, other allied health professionals and speech and language therapy clinicians and service managers continue to be involved, in order to ensure that changes in speech and language therapy practice are incorporated.

You will share some learning experiences with Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Adult Nursing and Mental Health Nursing students on similar two-year accelerated pre-registration programmes. Our Language Pathology MSc is designed for those wanting to develop a career as a Speech and Language Therapist in the National Health Service. This practical course is accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council.

In year one you will cover modules in psychology, linguistics and anatomy/physiology that underpin the discipline. You will also begin to work on speech and language therapy (SLT) cases and have your first experiences of working clinically under supervision.

Year two is more specialised with a focus on motor, head and neck and cognitive impairments. With academic and clinical supervision, you will carry out and write up a clinically-based research project (an extended case report), based on a therapy programme that you will deliver to one client.

Course structure

The course is offered in both full and part-time modes. It is normally one year duration in full-time mode or the master’s can be completed in up to six years in part-time mode.

The three SPLD/Dyslexia modules (TT7364, TT7365 and TT7369) comprise taught sessions and assessed projects.

Completion of the first 60 credit module on the course (TT7364 – Identifying and Supporting Learners with SpLD/Dyslexia) leads to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in SpLD/Dyslexia, and subsequent completion of the 30 credit second module (TT7365 – Assessment Methodology for SpLD/Dyslexia) alongside the taught module (TT7369 – Identifying and Overcoming Maths Difficulties) or a 30 credit Independent study, leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in SpLD/Dyslexia. Successful completion of modules TT7364 and TT7365 alongside successful submission of research training (PR7101 and PR7102) and a Dissertation (PR7120) in the final part of the course will lead to the award of a Master's in SpLD/Dyslexia.

The course combines theory and practice through workshops, case studies, research, analysis, assignments and the justification of your professional practice and experience through the application and evaluation of research.

Modules

The MA in SPLD/Dyslexia focuses upon identification, assessment and practical support for learners of all ages with SpLD/Dyslexia. The modules can combine direct academic teaching and study at master’s level at the University to obtain the academci awards of PG Cert/Dip or Masters in SpLD/Dyslexia with the optional development of practical competence required to obtain AMBDA accreditation from the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) through professional practice supervised by expert tutors.

Alongside research training modules (PR7101 and PR7102; 30 credits) and a supervised dissertation (PR7120: 60 credits), the full time programme includes:

Identifying and Supporting Learners with SpLD / Dyslexia (TT7364):
The first phase of the pathway provides 60 M-level credits on submission of the academic assignments. It develops the ability to carry out assessments to compile an individual learning profile to underpin the development and teaching of individualised programmes for learners with SpLD/Dyslexia across a range of contexts. Methods and strategies to develop the inclusive practices which can support learners across the curriculum are also explored. The module consists of two master’s level units of 30 M level credits, each, amounting to 60 hours face to face tuition, assignments plus a commitment to independent study time. The total of twenty 3 hour sessions (60 hours) will run as twilight sessions on Tuesdays from 5-8pm at the Newton Park campus.
Semester One – October to December 2012 – will focus upon the identification of the learning differences underpinning SpLD / Dyslexia and their impact upon the development of literacy.
Semester Two – January to March 2013 - will focus upon the experience and evaluation of programmes and methodologies to support the development of literacy and cross curricular study skills for learners with dyslexia.

Assessment Methodology for SpLD / Dyslexia (TT7365):
This module will develop the ability to undertake full diagnostic assessments for dyslexia to inform programmes and appropriate support, such as Examination Access Arrangements. This module comprises 36 hours face to face tuition, professional practice based assignments, plus a commitment to private study. It is likely to be delivered through three full day workshops (two Saturdays and one weekday TBC) and seven twilight sessions on Tuesdays between October 2012 and January 2013. Places on this module are strictly limited for 2012-13. Submission of the (optional) professional practice portfolio alongside academic practice-based assignments will obtain dual accreditation enabling suitably qualified teachers and speech and language therapist professionals to gain the sought after BDA Approved Teacher Status (ATS), on completion of TT7364, or AMBDA (TT7365). Tutor support for the portfolio will cost £360 for each of the two modules (Total £720).

Identifying and Overcoming Maths difficulties
TT7369-30: The focus is upon developing an understanding of the difficulties faced by primary or secondary students with SpLD/dyslexia or dyscalculia when learning mathematics and how to help students overcome these challenges. It will be led by Julie Kay an international expert in maths and dyslexia. You will use observation, discussion, standardised and informal testing, along with the research of other professionals to identify the difficulties and develop the skills and strategies needed to overcome them using a multi-sensory approach. You will be helped to select suitable written and concrete materials to be used when teaching pupils with these learning profiles. You will learn to develop, deliver and evaluate individualised structured, multi-sensory numeracy programmes based upon interpretation of assessment data.

Course assessment

There are no written exams and each module is assessed by coursework. This typically involves 5,000 words for a 30 credit module. The dissertation is 15,000–20,000 words and worth 60 credits. It focuses on an area linked with SpLD/dyslexia mutually agreed with a specialist tutor who also offers guidance and support in the writing of the dissertation. To achieve the award you will need 180 credits in total.

The programme gives students a detailed understanding of the changes that occur and difficulties that can arise for the individual who seeks the help of a speech and language therapist.

Speech and language therapists work in hospital wards and outpatient departments, mainstream and special schools, day centres and clients' homes, and courtrooms, prisons and young offenders' institutions. Practice placements are organised to give experience of a number of these settings.

The programme aims to develop speech and language therapists who are autonomous, accountable practitioners, competent and confident to contribute their evidence-based profession-specific skills and knowledge in the delivery of health, education and social care for users of speech and language therapy services and their families.

The programme is structured to maximise opportunities for learning how to work in an interprofessional and multi-agency context and within a changing workforce. A wide range of assessments are used including written assessments, presentations and assessment of placement education.

The MSc in Speech, Language and Communication Needs in Schools is jointly run by City, University of London and UCL Institute of Education. It brings together speech and language therapists, teachers and other graduate school-based practitioners for collaborative study. The programme is designed to enable students to:

Teaching and learning

Modules are facilitated by experienced clinicians, teachers and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive methods. Some modules take place in large groups supplemented by small group discussion or laboratory sessions that provide hands-on experience of statistical analyses. Specialist modules take place in small groups combining lecturing with student-led discussion and workshop activities often drawing on participants' professional experiences. Moodle, the virtual learning environment at both institutions, provides an online platform for sharing module information and interactive learning. These methods support and are supported by self-directed study.

Assessments

Modules are assessed through a diverse range of assignments that may include essays, literature reviews, oral presentations, poster presentations, case studies, and data analyses. Assessments require critical evaluation of the research on key issues; selective application of theory and research to a particular setting, group or individual in the student's experience; understanding of research methods; and skills in statistical analysis.

The taught programme comprises:
-Four core modules
-Either one elective module worth 30 credits or two elective modules each worth 15 credits
-A research dissertation.

Teaching takes place in three 10-week terms: autumn, spring and summer. Students will normally take one module per term part-time or two modules per term full-time.

Each module runs over 3-5 whole days, 10 evenings or 10 half days. In addition, students will be expected to spend approximately half a day a week reading around the taught sessions, preparing for discussion, or completing short exercises. Students have up to one year to complete the research dissertation.

Placement Educators work closely with University staff to ensure that academic and clinical aspects of the course are integrated.

Format

The Msc/PgDip Occupational Therapy course is designed to enable you to develop the required competencies, skills and standards of proficiency required to be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as an occupational therapist.

The accelerated design of the course allows the full-time professional training to be condensed into two years, rather than the traditional three-year route. This experience acts as good preparation for entering the stimulating and evolving world of health and social care as a qualified member of the workforce.

A key feature of this course is the problem-based learning approach which involves you working in a small group with a shared responsibility for meeting the learning outcomes for each module.

Occupational Therapy at LSBU has a dedicated team of tutors who utilise their wealth of knowledge, skills and clinical experiences of working in health and social care to inform the teaching programme. The team has a strong commitment to engaging with clinicians and service users in the teaching programme.

Modules

Year 1:
- Introduction to occupation
This module develops an understanding of the healthy individual across the age range. You will explore people's roles and relationships and their engagement in occupation/activity. The environments in which individuals participate such as; home, school, and community will be considered. Occupational therapy philosophy will be introduced and the scope of the profession explored. An understanding of relevant underpinning knowledge such as: human development, psychosocial theories, anatomy and physiology will be developed. Professional ethics and behaviour will also be introduced.

- Assessment of occupational performance
In this module the focus is on the assessment phase of the occupational therapy (OT) process. You will be able to appraise the concepts of assessment and evaluate standardised and non-standardised assessments. Occupational/activity analysis is introduced and evidence-based practice skills begin to develop. This module will explore common experiences associated with the ageing process.

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 1
This module focuses on the processes of problem identification, goal setting and intervention planning and introduces intervention strategies. You will continue to develop knowledge of theories and models influencing Occupational Therapy practice. Evidence-based practice begins to emerge more strongly.

Year 2:
- Enabling occupational performance and participation 2
This module will build on knowledge and skills in the intervention planning and intervention stages of the OT process. You will be able to draw on the evidence base when selecting and implementing intervention strategies.;

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 3
This module will build on knowledge and skills in the implementation and evaluation of intervention in the OT process. It will also consolidate knowledge and skills in relation to the whole OT Process. This module also develops understanding of environments and how they can be adapted to enhance occupational performance from the perspective of a child. These will be explored in the context of disability, inclusion, occupational identity and performance.

- Leadership and service innovation in occupational therapy
This module focuses on entrepreneurship, service innovation and development, it consolidates knowledge and skills related to personal management and prepares you to manage the complexities of a dynamic health and social care environment. The development of professional identity will also be explored.

- Research and scholarship in occupational therapy (MSc qualification only)
This is an optional module for the award of a preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy. Students who pass two out of three first year modules on the first attempt and achieve the required marks are given the option to enrol on Research and scholarship in occupational therapy module. This module is the equivalent to three modules and runs concurrent with other second year modules and a placement. Successful completion of this and the six postgraduate modules will result in being awarded preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy.

All modules are assessed by a mix of written assignments, case studies, critical review, presentations, examinations, practice placements and a research proposal (MSc students only).

Employability

As well as the practical skills required to work as an occupational therapist, this course course develops the employability skills needed for a successful career, including verbal and written communication, negotiation and liaison, team work, organisation and self-management, leadership and management, and personal resilience as well as the ability to work with a diverse range of people whilst demonstrating the values and attributes as described in the NHS constitution.

- Occupational therapy as a career
On graduating you are eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This allows you to practice as an occupational therapist within the NHS, community services and local authorities, as well as social enterprises and the private sector. Other settings include prisons, residential and nursing homes, schools and social services.

- Salary
Occupational therapists beginning their career as allied health professionals in the NHS typically as a Band 5 with a starting salary of about £21,692. Salaries in local government are at similar levels.

Career development offers opportunities to move to higher grades in team leadership, clinical expert, service management and consultant therapist roles. Within the NHS, this can mean salaries in the band 7 and 8 range.

- Continuous professional development
For graduates with a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy from London South Bank University awarded within the last three years, we offer a unique opportunity to 'top up' your qualification to an MSc in Occupational Therapy by completing the School of Health and Social Care dissertation module. Placements

During the course you are required to successfully complete over 1000 practice placement hours within a broad variety of health and social care settings, meeting the registration requirements of the College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

At LSBU, we work closely with a number of healthcare organisations to provide a wide range of suitable clinical placements. You will therefore gain experience of working with:

- Acute and long-standing health needs (including physical, mental health and learning disability)
- Services in a range of settings (hospital and community, urban and rural)
- People of different ages

Structure of placement learning:
Practice placements are in four blocks and are all full-time. You will work under the guidance of an occupational therapist (educator). The placements are developmental and occur at three levels, matching your knowledge and skills development whilst you progress through the course. Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be an occupational therapist.

Placement settings:
Placements will predominantly be within the Greater London area in the NHS, local authority, voluntary, social enterprise, charities and private sectors. Placements can be in existing services as well as emerging services. Applicants should be aware that they may need to cover travel costs and placements could require them to commute across London (up to two hours).

Occupational therapy practice is concerned with enhancing the daily lives of individuals with a very broad range of physical, mental health or social needs. As an occupational therapist you will work with clients to improve function and enable them to fulfil the demands of their daily lives with greater satisfaction. You will work with people of all ages from all walks of life, in hospital, in the community, in their place of employment or in their home, and have the opportunity to work in a very wide variety of professional practice areas.

The fundamental aim of the MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-registration) programme is to enable you to graduate with a master’s degree in occupational therapy and be eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK. The Degree does not provide eligibility to practice in any other country although the degree is WFOT recognised.

Teaching and learning

MSc in Occupational Therapy is taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy.

Pre-registration Masters students will be taught alongside the undergraduate students in all occupational therapy specific modules. These will be identified with different module numbers and names to those of the undergraduate programme. This dual level teaching in classroom will provide you with the opportunity to learn the core skills and specific attributes of occupational therapy alongside the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy students.

However, the pre-registration Masters students are provided with an enhanced level 7 learning experience with module specific tutorials to explore a more critical and evidence based approach to the subject matter and thus develop professional competence in academic, research and digital literacy, critical thinking and personal self-awareness.

Our approach will require you to actively engage in these Masters level tutorials and become self-directed, innovative, creative and critical learners. Teaching will assist you to construct knowledge through the analysis, synthesis and conceptualisation of your learning experiences, thus developing a lifelong approach to learning. This supports employability in a marketplace that demands adaptability, continuous development and leadership.

You will have the opportunity for face-to-face and virtual learning activities. Our inter-professional module is taken alongside other health and social care pre-registration master's level students, enabling you to prepare for the interdisciplinary work you will encounter in the health and social care environment.

Working at master’s level, you will focus on developing your knowledge in occupational therapy, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

This master's degree will:
- Enable you to be a reflective, proactive, innovative and adaptable occupational therapy practitioner, with the ability to critique research and evaluate the effectiveness of evidence in a wide variety of practice settings.

- Develop a critical understanding of the theory of occupation and teach you to challenge existing models and approaches used in occupational therapy from an informed perspective.

- Provide opportunities to develop your ability to work both independently and as part of a team in the context of social, technological, administrative and policy changes.

Careers

The majority of graduates from the occupational therapy degrees work as qualified and registered occupational therapists, but there are increasing opportunities to work in non-specified professional roles in mental health and community settings. There are also increasing numbers of employment roles that are not explicitly described or advertised as an ‘occupational therapist’ but match the skills specification of an occupational therapist. This is due to the changing nature of health and social care practice and the new and emerging roles and opportunities for occupational therapy.

Research highlights

The Centre for Rehabilitation within the Department of Sport and Health Sciences has strong leadership in the director, Professor Helen Dawes. The Centre brings together research, education and care. It is underpinned by a strong, well-published research group, the Movement Science Group, along with clinical expertise, rehabilitation, knowledge and care of adults and children with neurological conditions.
