We are dedicated to ensuring your course suits your needs, so you will be able to tailor your studies to your career aspirations. Through live projects and competitions, you will be tasked with responding to the numerous environmental challenges facing today's landscape architects.

You will benefit from our multimedia studios equipped with drawing boards, computers and model-making facilities, a state-of-the-art library, specialist workshops and a Landscape Resource Centre, which features experimental gardens.

This course is accredited by the Landscape Institute and will enable you to become a graduate member of the Institute.

We offer two routes for studying our course. Firstly, if you have an undergraduate degree in a related area to landscape architecture we will give you a thorough grounding in the subject, including design processes, urban and rural landscape design and landscape technology.

You will undertake a comprehensive landscape architecture project and join specialist design studios in ecological, community and urban design as well as studying contemporary landscape theory. At the end of the course you have the option to join an advanced landscape architecture studio which when complete provides you with a fully accredited MA and eligibility for graduate membership of the UK Landscape Institute. This can take a further six months for full-time and 12 months for part-time students.

The alternative route is if you already have an undergraduate qualification in Landscape Architecture. Our course is an opportunity to enrol for a fully accredited MALA or to top-up your qualification into an MA when you have completed a postgraduate diploma. You will have the opportunity to undertake a project of your choosing, and relevant to your interests, in order to achieve this.

We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Your projects are supported through lectures, specialist workshops, small group seminars and one-to-one tutorials, together with UK and overseas study visits, including Amsterdam and Bordeaux. Our virtual studio (CAGD) provides a valuable learning environment particularly for part-time students and those studying at a distance. Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. In 1989 he set up one of the UK's first multimedia PC companies, 'Systems 2000'.

The MSc Degree programme in Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design offers the student the tools to become an Architect with a sound competence on theories, methods and applications of Architecture and of Landscape Design, highly skilled in the issues of contemporary territories: regeneration of productive landscapes; sustainable transformation of the architectural, urban and rural landscapes; transformation of the built environment and re-use of the existent soil; design of open spaces and infrastructures; protection of the territory; valorisation of the ecological and cultural resources; design strategies for new forms of sustainable inhabiting.
To this aim, this Degree Programme offers a complex view on the environment, dealing with all the landscape forms: from urban, to agricultural and to suburban areas, in line with the European Landscape Convention (2000) which “applies to the entire territory of
the Parties and covers natural, rural, urban and peri-urban areas”. More specifically, the landscape is seen as “represented”, “constructed” and “productive” landscape, with a specific attention to the aspects of sustainability (from a physical, economic and social point of view). The study involves the research, planning and design of landscape to create and maintain places to be functional, meaningful, sustainable and beautiful.

Programme summary

Landscapes form our living environment. Natural landscapes are often beautiful in themselves, however most of those we now live in are the result of our complex interaction with the natural world. The new generation of landscape architects and spatial planners understand the challenges we face when shaping and creating the landscapes that form a key component of our living environment. Your goal is to study and design sustainable solutions for important landscape challenges such as climate change, energy needs, health, food security and urbanisation.

Specialisations

The programme offers two specialisations: landscape architecture and spatial planning.

Landscape Architecture
Your primary focus as a Wageningen landscape architect is the design and construction of metropolitan landscapes situated in estuaries and deltas worldwide. Your goal is to create sustainable designs based on a thorough investigation of the ecological, behavioural and aesthetical disciplines.

Spatial Planning
As a spatial planner you develop scenarios for future landscape transformation and evaluate the effectiveness of these scenarios for many different stakeholders. You study planning processes and generate and organise the theoretical and practical knowledge needed for spatial interventions.

Your future career

Once you graduate with an MSc in Landscape Architecture and Planning, you are well-prepared for a career as a landscape architect, spatial planning consultant, project manager, policy adviser and academic or applied researcher. Many of our alumni hold senior positions at consultancy and engineering companies, planning and design bureaus, district water boards, government agencies and universities. A number work for large multinationals, while others have set up their own company or are employed by small and medium sized enterprises.

Students Ruud Tak and Jesper Borsje.
For their thesis, Jesper and Ruud investigated sustainable tourism development in coastal landscapes. They visited the Dubrovnik Rivièra in Croatia for their case study and explored and developed an integrated design strategy for tourism development. Their designs on a regional and local scale show how site-specific landscape identities can function as a base for future sustainable tourism development. “We visited our study area twice. We explored the area ourselves, participated in workshops, and held interviews with local people. This gave us unique insights in the issues that arise when working in a different culture and landscape.”

This MSc engages with a great challenge facing urban professionals: the decay of cities and their planned renaissance. It will equip you with the ability to critically analyse complex urban issues, the boldness to address those issues in a creative, strategic manner and the confidence to propose appropriate implementation plans.

Degree information

You will acquire the latest knowledge of the social, economic and spatial issues involved in regenerating urban areas and you will gain a case-based, multidisciplinary experience of real urban regeneration schemes. The programme provides a platform for informed reflection on the latest theory and practice and will develop your creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits in total.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). Dissertation/report
In order to develop your research skills and critical thinking you will undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through individual and group project work, lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. You will participate for free in a field trip to mainland Europe and in several site visits in the UK. You will be assessed through essays, individual and group projects, presentations, reports, an unseen written examination and the dissertation.

We make every effort to bundle teaching for the core modules on two days per week so that students studying on a flexible basis can attend lectures one day per week. However, due to timetabling and venue availability restrictions no guarantee can be given that we will be able to offer this every year. There is also no guarantee that the electives you may wish to choose will be offered on the same day as the rest of your classes. Your coursework may require you to dedicate more than one slot per week on fieldwork or study.

Fieldwork
A field trip will take place in the reading week of term two.

Students will learn how to acquire knowledge from a range of sources including history, horticulture, architecture, garden archaeology and other subjects, to develop an appreciation of the study of garden history as a cultural discipline.

Students will be able to appreciate the differences in garden-making over time and in different countries, from the 16th century to the present day in Britain, Europe and America. Emphasis will be on design and management, ownership, and the culture from which these examples have evolved.

This degree will provide an academically rigorous environment in which students will learn a range of academic research and writing skills. Teaching will be undertaken at the Institute of Historical Research (http://www.history.ac.uk/), with a strong emphasis on tutor/student interaction in class. There will be practical sessions at museums and libraries, as well as visits to gardens in London. There will also be an optional field trip to Italy in the spring.

Structure

The course will be run on a full-time basis over one year. Teaching will take place on Thursdays from 10:00 to 17:00 and will be divided between two terms. The third term will be dedicated to dissertation preparation and writing. Please get in touch if you would like to see the full timetable.

Students must complete core module 1, core module 2 (selecting three options from the six provided), and core module 3 - a 15,000 word dissertation in order to be awarded the full MA.

Module 1: Researching Garden History (60 credits)

The first term will showcase the huge variety of resources available to study garden and landscape history from archaeology, architecture, cartography, horticulture, manuscripts, paintings and other works of art, from the sixteenth century to the present day.

A 5,000 word report on the history of a garden chosen by the student and an accompanying presentation.

Module 2: Culture and Politics of Gardens (60 credits)

This module consists of six optional units of which students must choose three.

These sessions aim to:

Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of gardens and landscapes in different countries
Develop students’ critical analysis and judgement
Demonstrate the importance of context and the relationship of garden and landscape history to other disciplines such as literature, social history, film and visual media and the history of ideas
The module will look at Historiography, theory, the connection between culture and politics in landscape making and the expansion of the skills of term one across regional boundaries.

For instance, the influence in Britain of the Italian Renaissance’s new ideas on garden making, including architecture, sculpture and hydraulic engineering; iconography in gardens and landscapes; formality in garden-making as an indicator of the power of the owner, from the sixteenth century onwards, as in France; different aspects of the ‘natural’ garden from the eighteenth century onwards; conflict between the ‘natural’ and the formal in the nineteenth century between William Robinson and Reginald Blomfield in Britain; gender and garden making; and shifting boundaries between architect, landscape architect and plantsman relating to the status of those designing gardens and landscapes in the 21st century.

This course is a unique opportunity to qualify as both an architect and landscape architect. It is open to students with previous combined or separate degrees in both architecture and landscape architecture. The degree is awaiting prescription from the RIBA at Part 2, LI Part 3 and the ARB.

Your study focuses on a range of themed, design-based studios dedicated to specific areas of practice or research. There are compulsory modules in landscape architecture, humanities, management, building and plant sciences, and an integrated architecture and landscape architecture project.

To qualify as an architect, you’ll produce at least one comprehensive design project. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with local or regional groups on a real-life challenge through our Live Projects initiative.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Practice brings students to the final stage of their architectural training. Upon successful completion, students can apply to join the UK's register of architects. The programme is rooted in the description, explanation and analysis of aspects of current professional practice. It also demands that students examine and debate their own methods of working in the light of taught input. Consequently, applicants should normally be engaged in full-time architectural practice in the UK and be fully prepared to share their experience with their fellow students.

The viva included in this programme is held at the culmination of studies where the candidate demonstrates to examining professionals that they have fully benefited and learnt from their prior professional experience.

In the Janus paper ('Looking back, Looking ahead') students review their experience and reflect on what - and how - they've learned from it. They consider their needs for future development and their career plans. There are mechanisms to allow students, upon written request, to break their studies for personal or professional reasons. This can be done at certain milestones in the programme, provided agreement has been obtained from the Department.

Students usually attend lectures one evening a week during the autumn and spring terms, with occasional one-day specialist courses.
