Economics MBA

This exciting accelerated degree program offers a 21st century alternative to traditional business education. Designed for today’s interdependent world where economic forces operate in an increasingly complex business environment the 5-year program combines an undergraduate education in economics with a comprehensive MBA preparation in management, marketing, finance and world business. Upon graduation, students will be uniquely equipped for careers in investment banking, international trade and supply chain management.

To further their understanding of international economics, global economic forces and international business planning, students have the option of studying abroad for a junior-year semester at LIU Global’s center in China.

The B.A. in Economics/MBA draws on the strengths of LIU Post's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences renowned for its economics offerings and LIU Post’s College of Management, which is one of the elite 5 percent of MBA programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and is regularly listed in The Princeton Review’s Best Business Schools.

The master programme Economics consists of 120 ECTS- (European Credit Transfer System) Points and is designed as a 4-semester full-time programme. It is a consecutive master degree based on a bachelor degree within the field of economics.
The Core and Advanced Section of the master programme economics contains 48 credit points. This area covers content-specific and methodological basics of micro and macroeconomics, statistics, econometrics and mathematics. These competencies enable students to comprehend scientific literature of economic science and furthermore to independently analyse economic problems on an advanced theoretical and empirical level. Students will be able to select modules on a research- and methods oriented level (Research Track Modules), which allows them to assemble a course package following already acquired knowledge, interest and training objective.
In the specialisation section, students choose two out of six different subareas (fields). In each one, 18 credit points with 3 specialisation modules have to be obtained. These fields reflect research- and application focuses of the faculty in the area of economics:
• Design and Behavior
• Energy Economics
• Growth, Labor and Inequality in the Global Economy
• Markets and Institutions
• Macroeconomics, Money and Financial Markets
• Public Economics
• Statistics and Econometrics
Students also have the possibility to have credits acquired during a semester abroad accounted for at the WiSo-Faculty.

The Supplementary Section serves as an additional section to develop a more specific profile – either by deepening and specialising or by diversifying knowledge. Further modules of the extensive course offer of the faculty from economics as well as from social sciences or business administration are available to students. Examples for modules are e.g. finance, corporate strategy, economic psychology or economic geography. This area covers 12 credit points.

The M.A. in Economics program was established in the mid-1960s but has recently made changes to ensure that the program is focused on training students to conduct applied economic research and decision analysis using current methodologies. There is an emphasis on hands-on data analysis, making it possible for graduates to acquire the skills and knowledge for careers as consultants in private business and analysts for the government. The dedicated graduate faculty at MTSU have prepared highly qualified master’s-level economists who have gone on to continue their doctoral studies not only at MTSU but at numerous universities, including Chicago, Virginia, North Carolina State, and Auburn. Others have found employment in local banking, the Federal government, and the State of Tennessee.

COMPANY ANALYSIS AND PROFILE

Students will select a company with international business located in different national culture. The purpose is to evaluate the impact of organization design on human resources roles and responsibilities. The objective is to gather public and internal information to develop their own analysis of the situation.

The program encourages effective teamwork as the major part of modules expects students to work in groups. These groups will consist of students of different nationalities and rhythms, as some students attend courses part-time.

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND PROJECT PROPOSAL

A research techniques module has been created to provide the skills required to effectively work on the Final Management Projects and on future professional projects.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project, a written work of approximately 20,000 words, conducted under the supervision of a tutor from GGSB. Students will choose an aspect of International HR Management and are encouraged to link the chosen subject matter to their future career. The project can be completed in parallel with full-time employment or an internship based in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Operating in an international environment requires foreign language fluency and therefore a foreign language module is an option on the program for all students.

Non-French speakers may study French (beginner to advanced level). This option is highly advised for those who are looking to become professionals in France. French speakers may choose from a number of other languages at beginner level.

Graduates of this MSc program will be qualified for posts in both multinational corporations and companies experiencing rapid expansion in international markets.

Learning objectives

During the first year, students will study the foundations of economics and quantitative analysis, whereas the second year is devoted to field courses that will expose them to recent developments at the frontier of economic research in a variety of topics. At the end of the second year students will work on their final dissertation. The curriculum also offers an internship program with either economic research institutions located in the Milan area or within the University’s Department of Economics and Finance, where student are offered the opportunity to work as an applied economists on real world economic issues, as well as meeting prospective employers. The MSc Finance prepares students for careers in the financial sector such as investment and commercial banking, asset management, financial services and consulting, or for corporate finance positions within international companies at a managerial level.

The program provides an excellent preparation for the Chartered Financial Analysts® (CFA) exams, as it is based on the CFA Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and is part of the CFA University Recognition program. It also covers related fields such as management control systems, economics, corporate governance, and private equity investment.

Actuaries provide assessments of financial security systems, with a focus on their complexity, their mathematics, and their mechanisms. Actuaries quantify the probability and manage the risk of future events in areas such as insurance, healthcare, pensions, investment, and banking and also in non-financial areas. This course is taught by the Department of Mathematical Sciences and is intended for students with a first degree in mathematics, statistics, economics or finance who would like to acquire knowledge in actuarial science.

Our MSc Actuarial Science course is based on the syllabus of the majority of the Core Technical subjects of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, so you’ll cover Core Technical subjects as part of your course (CT2 or CT3, depending on the optional module selected, CT4, CT5, CT6, and CT8). This focus on up-to-date research findings in actuarial methodologies and actuarial applications means that you gain a solid training in actuarial modelling and actuarial analysis.
