The programme is designed for individuals of any professional background in international organisations, public administration, transnational organisations and private sector companies who are involved in the HRD, leadership and capacity planning aspects of organisations in developing and transitional countries. These may include managers/leaders of HRD/training/learning, HRD and education in government administration; direct trainers, staff of training centres, staff involved in human development planning in governments; HRD and Leadership consultants involved in change projects, change consultants involved in community development; NGO managers and line managers concerned with the development of their staff.

Course Content

Master of Information Technology students will undertake a coherent programme of 180 credits approved by the programme manager and will follow one of two pathways.

Pathway 1

The first pathway is designed for students who want to undertake more course work and consists of four compulsory components:

- IT801 Managing ICT Projects and Systems
The student will develop knowledge and skills in managing ICT projects and systems. The student will also research into established frameworks that are relevant to current industry trends.
- IT802 Researching ICT Issues and Trends

Central to all of this are information systems and knowledge management – the means or processes by which people and organisations, utilising technologies, create or gather, process, store, use and disseminate or share management information and organisational knowledge.

This programme introduces students to the effective development, use and management of these systems, and the information and communication technologies (ICTs) that support them. You will also learn to appreciate their strategic applications, and evaluate the implications of technology trends such as social media, cloud computing, business intelligence, big data storage/analytics, etc. for the nature of work and organisational competitive advantage. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

With an increase in the number of undergraduate degrees offering the MChem qualification, our Chemistry MRes allows BSc graduates to become equally competitive by studying for an enhanced qualification that will set them apart throughout their career.

Our MRes qualification is also a convenient entry point into the UK academic system for overseas students, and many of our MRes graduates go on to successfully complete a PhD.

Our academics are at the forefront of their field, having recently discovered a method for the rapid detection of drugs from a fingerprint; and a naturally sourced, environmentally safe chemical for the treatment of an important agricultural pathogen.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of three taught modules and a research project, which contributes 75 per cent of the final credits to the degree and includes the laboratory based research, library work, COSHH, record keeping and writing the dissertation.

We would normally expect the laboratory based part of the project to be, on average, two to three full days per week during the teaching semesters and five days per week during non-teaching times (for example, over the Christmas, Easter and summer breaks).

For example, imagine the huge amounts of genomic or patient data available electronically, and how the quality of their management can affect society.

The Data and Knowledge Management pathway allows students to take specialist themes concerned with methods and technologies for the adequate management of data and knowledge. The Managing Data theme focuses on the design, maintenance, and query processing of both structured and unstructured databases. The Learning from Data theme covers principles, algorithms, and technologies underlying machine learning, probabilistic modelling, and optimisation, while exposing students to relevant applications. The Advanced Web Technologies theme provides students with a deep understanding of the technologies that are being used to support the continuing evolution of the Web, including Semantic Web technologies.

Course structure

This course is flexible so you can choose to study via a combination of evening classes and weekly blocks, depending on your specific needs. Part-time study allows you to apply the tools, theories and techniques learned during the course to your workplace, bringing an immediate benefit to your organisation.

It is possible to complete the course in two years, but most students spread the workload over three years. Should your circumstances change, you may suspend your studies and restart at a later date. The course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

Syllabus

You can start your part-time MBA in January or September, sharing core modules with managers from all our MBA specialisms. Once you have completed your first core modules you can choose to specialise in Leadership, Knowledge and Innovation Management or Public Service Management.

You can also choose from a host of optional modules that will allow you to specialise in the areas of management you are most interested in. Most MBA modules can be studied in the evening or in weekly blocks.

Flexible study

Core modules will give you thorough knowledge in each key business discipline. You will then have the opportunity to tailor your MBA through a choice of specialisms and option modules.

Our part-time MBA typically takes one day per week over two to three years, or on a block basis. When studying in the block format modules can be taken in any order to suit your interests, apart from the final module.

If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go, exiting with a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, or an MBA.

Careers and employability

An MBA is an internationally recognised passport to a successful management career. It takes into account all the major aspects of business.

In a recent study by the Association of MBAs, those surveyed were earning on average, 33 per cent more immediately after their MBA, 92 percent more 3–5 years later, and 151 per cent more 6–10 years after graduation. Both in the short and long-term, an MBA can be considered a solid investment.

• Careers Counsellor

Christina Keiller is the Business School's Careers Counsellor. Students can speak confidentially with Christina to discuss their plans, have their CV reviewed and prepare for interviews. She works closely with course tutors to ensure that employability is included within academic study.

• Entrepreneurship network

Beepurple is the university’s entrepreneurship support network. They offer free support for any student or graduate with their business ideas, freelance plan or social enterprise project. Beepurple run events throughout the academic year, designed to equip you with skills that will improve your employability and help you grow a successful business. By taking part in beepurple activities, you will meet like-minded people, hear how other recent graduates have set up their own businesses and gain key enterprise skills that will help you stand out from the crowd.

• Mentoring scheme

Momentum is our award-winning mentoring scheme. It pairs students with professionals who wish to share their experience. Students and their mentors meet regularly to exchange ideas. The scheme helps students to develop new skills and enhance their career prospects.
