Master of Information Technology students will undertake a coherent programme of 180 credits approved by the programme manager and will follow one of two pathways.

Pathway 1

With an increase in the number of undergraduate degrees offering the MChem qualification, our Chemistry MRes allows BSc graduates to become equally competitive by studying for an enhanced qualification that will set them apart throughout their career.

Our MRes qualification is also a convenient entry point into the UK academic system for overseas students, and many of our MRes graduates go on to successfully complete a PhD.

Our academics are at the forefront of their field, having recently discovered a method for the rapid detection of drugs from a fingerprint; and a naturally sourced, environmentally safe chemical for the treatment of an important agricultural pathogen.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of three taught modules and a research project, which contributes 75 per cent of the final credits to the degree and includes the laboratory based research, library work, COSHH, record keeping and writing the dissertation.

We would normally expect the laboratory based part of the project to be, on average, two to three full days per week during the teaching semesters and five days per week during non-teaching times (for example, over the Christmas, Easter and summer breaks).

The Data and Knowledge Management pathway allows students to take specialist themes concerned with methods and technologies for the adequate management of data and knowledge. The Managing Data theme focuses on the design, maintenance, and query processing of both structured and unstructured databases. The Learning from Data theme covers principles, algorithms, and technologies underlying machine learning, probabilistic modelling, and optimisation, while exposing students to relevant applications. The Advanced Web Technologies theme provides students with a deep understanding of the technologies that are being used to support the continuing evolution of the Web, including Semantic Web technologies.

Course structure

This course is flexible so you can choose to study via a combination of evening classes and weekly blocks, depending on your specific needs. Part-time study allows you to apply the tools, theories and techniques learned during the course to your workplace, bringing an immediate benefit to your organisation.

It is possible to complete the course in two years, but most students spread the workload over three years. Should your circumstances change, you may suspend your studies and restart at a later date. The course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

Syllabus

You can start your part-time MBA in January or September, sharing core modules with managers from all our MBA specialisms. Once you have completed your first core modules you can choose to specialise in Leadership, Knowledge and Innovation Management or Public Service Management.

You can also choose from a host of optional modules that will allow you to specialise in the areas of management you are most interested in. Most MBA modules can be studied in the evening or in weekly blocks.

The MRes programme in Curatorial/Knowledge takes place within the world’s only dedicated PhD programme for advanced contemporary curatorial research. It provides a profound grounding in a variety of relevant theoretical knowledges and offers a unique meeting ground for a network of internationally active curators.

The MRes programme in Curatorial/Knowledge is a unique degree recognising that in order to function as a curator in contemporary globalised culture, one needs a far-reaching educational base, a range of diverse cultural references, and the ability to ask new questions.

The world of art today spans not only cultures across the globe but also activities that include social organising, publishing and disseminating, working with local communities, and linking to institutions of education and governance. How can we equip people for such diverse tasks? This is the question that Curatorial/Knowledge has posed to the rest of the contemporary art world.

Our specific area of inquiry is ‘the curatorial’ as differentiated from ‘curating’. While ‘curating’ as such deals with the mechanisms of staging exhibitions and their discursive sphere in or out of the remit established by the museum or exhibition space, ‘the curatorial’ explores all that takes place within the context of the staged exhibition, both intentionally and unintentionally, by curator or viewers.

The MRes programme is linked to the MPhil/PhD prgramme in Curatorial/Knowledge, to provide the highest possible level of exchange between different researchers. All of our participants are young curators or artists working either institutionally or independently. The students come together 6 times a year for intense 3-day seminars. MRes students have 1 year of study in London combining these seminars with a dissertation project supervised by a personal tutor.

This programme is generously supported by FICA – Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (New Delhi) and Magic of Persia (London), funding one-year scholarships for a researcher from India and a researcher from Iran each year.

Skills & careers

Students and candidates expressing their interest in Curatorial/Knowledge are often already professionally employed or active at a high level, including museum directors, museum or freelance curators, generators of self-organised spaces, artists and art critics. The programme also offers the opportunity for practising bridge engineers to update their knowledge of current design and assessment codes and guidelines, become familiar with developments in new techniques for the design, construction and management of bridges.

The Bridge Engineering programme encompasses a wide range of modules addressing the whole life-analysis of bridge structures from design to end-of-life.

Optional modules from some of our other study streams are also offered, covering structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, construction management, and infrastructure engineering and management.

Graduates are highly employable and may progress to relevant specialist PhD or EngD research programmes in the field.

Diplomacy and trade
Diplomacy and trade provides formal academic study across a range of disciplines relevant to the needs of organisations operating in the global environment. It provides high-level training in the fields of diplomacy, economics, law and contemporary politics. This specialisation is aimed at recent graduates who hope to work in the public and private sectors, or those who presently work in these sectors, and wish to increase their understanding of the international environment. It is designed to provide the knowledge needed to workin the government sector, implementing and providing policy advice on foreign affairs, trade, and business-related issues.

In the private domain, the course is designed for individuals who are operating, or looking to work, in an international capacity in both the corporate or not-for-profit sector.

International business
This specialisation investigates inter-disciplinary contemporary international business. Students will be engaged with international management, law, finance, economics, marketing, and strategy, enabling analytical skills that can be applied in a variety of organisational settings. International business develops strategic and operational international business knowledge and skills, particularly for the complexity of contemporary environments. The specialisation prepares graduates for international business roles across the corporate, governmental and non-profit sectors.

The Master of Advanced Electrical Engineering will give you a broad introduction to advanced techniques in signal processing, communications, digital systems and electronics. The units have been chosen around the common theme of embedded systems: special purpose computing systems designed for specific applications. They are found just about everywhere including in consumer electronics, transportation systems, medical equipment and sensor networks. The course will mix theory and practice and will contain a significant amount of hands-on learning in laboratories and team-based design projects.

Energy and sustainability engineering

The Master of Advanced Engineering (Energy and Sustainability) is designed for qualified engineers keen to deepen their knowledge in the energy and sustainability area. The course provides foundations in general engineering through engineering analysis and entrepreneurship units. Students can major in this program by examining energy and sustainability area from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Students can also choose elective units such as environment and air pollution control and smart grids to further enhance their knowledge in this area or undertake a minor research work to pursue a topic of interest related to this area.

The Master of Advanced Materials Engineering encompasses practical aspects of the key classes of materials such as metals, polymers, biomaterials, nanomaterials and energy-related materials. This program particularly focuses on the most up-to-date aspects of the field, along with the utilisation of materials and their electronic, chemical and mechanical properties as underpinned by the microstructures that are revealed by modern characterisation techniques. This program is designed to prepare students to appreciate and exploit the central role of materials in addressing the present technical, economic and environmental problems involved in the design and construction of engineering structures, processes and devices. This course is ideally suited for new graduates as well as professional engineers who are eager to advance their applied knowledge in the area of Materials Engineering.

Mechanical engineering

Most modern engineering projects are multidisciplinary in nature and require a broad range of skills, proficiencies and perspectives to accomplish the task. The Master of Advanced Mechanical Engineering takes a systems approach to the design, monitoring and performance of complex mechanical engineering systems in the fields of renewable energy, aerospace, buildings, transportation, and biomedical devices. The systems approach also permeates the design of the course: four discipline-based core units are vertically integrated so that common problems are examined from different perspectives, culminating in a sustainable systems unit.

If you are enthusiastic about maths and would like to teach it but don’t have all the qualifications to begin our maths PGCE, this course is the ideal stepping stone. This full time one-year (36-week), DfE Teaching Agency approved, subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course helps you to deepen your knowledge so that you are ready to train to teach maths.

The government needs more mathematics teachers, so you might even be eligible to receive a bursary while on the course.

Successfully completing this SKE course enables you to enrol for our one-year PGCE in Mathematics (subject to passing the pre-entry tests in numeracy and literacy). To be accepted onto this course you need to have already been successful in your application for a PGCE course.

Learn in a variety of ways and settings

This SKE course involves studying for one year at our City Campus, right in the heart of Sheffield. We help you to develop your subject knowledge and your confidence using a range of teaching and learning strategies and school visits. You complete mostly subject-based study at degree level, with some work alongside pupils in schools. Teaching groups are small, between 15 and 35 students, and are conducted in a lively and supportive atmosphere.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses (SKEs) are about improving subject knowledge in preparation for a Teacher Training course. You will be taught by experienced teachers of mathematics, and will spend 2 of the 12 weeks in a school where you will have the opportunity to apply your subject knowledge. You will benefit from extensive use of interactive methods which will help you learn mathematics and form links with colleagues which will be invaluabe throughout the PGCE programme. This course is available to PGCE offer holders at London Metropolitan University or at other universities whose offer stipulates completion of subject knowledge enhancement.

More about this course

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

Modular structure

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. You will be following a course which focusses on the content of higher GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Euclidean Statistics, and Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy. There will be a 2 week placement in a mathematics department in a secondary school.

You will learn mathematics in a variety of ways including mathematics software, group work and by following targets tailored to your own needs. Learning mathematics in these ways will give you first-hand experience of the pedagogies which you will use in the PGCE course. The school placement will give you the chance to see mathematics teaching in a school and you will, by completing specially designed evaluation tasks, develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. Throughout the course there will be regular tutorials to monitor your progress and provide help and guidance to make the London Met maths enhancement course a successful first step in your teaching career.

Funding

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (SKEs) are 12 weeks long. Your fees are paid by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In addition, you will receive a bursary of £2,400 or £800 per month. More information on Enhancement Courses is available from the DfE.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.
