You will be able to draw on expertise at both King's and Shakespeare's Globe, studying Shakespeare close to the types of theatres for which he wrote and just a stone's throw from where his plays were originally performed. 

At the Globe you will learn about early modern playhouses, audiences, performance practices and get to play on the stage and at King's you will cover early modern drama and other literary genres, examining Shakespeare alongside his contemporaries.

Description

The degree is offered jointly by King’s and Globe Education, allowing you to capitalise on the academic and practical expertise of both of these institutions. At the Globe you will take two compulsory module and at King’s you will take a critical methodologies module (‘Working with Early Modern Literary Texts’), which includes training in palaeography (the study of ancient writing systems and the deciphering and dating of manuscripts) and bibliography, along with one optional module. Through this degree you will pursue advanced study of the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, makeing use of the facilities and opportunities provided by Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and by King's. You will develop a detailed knowledge of early modern drama, particulary Shakespearean drama. 

Assessment

Our modules are assessed entirely through coursework, typically a 4,000-word essay for 20-credit modules and 8,000 to 10,000 words for a 40-credit module. There will also be a dissertation.

Teaching

You will also write a dissertation between May and September, supervised by academics at either King's or at the Globe, depending on the chosen subject. 

Teaching across the degree is delivered by academics from King’s and Globe Education, and complemented by visiting experts.

Description

Through this Classical Art & Archaeology MA you will examine painting, pottery, sculpture and mosiaics and explore the craftsmanship that produced archologically significant works. Traditionally, classical archaeology has focused on the art history of Classical Greece and Italy, but has more recently branched out geographically and chronologically. Archaeology has also become more theoretical in recent decades.

This course explores the relationship between humans and their material environment. We consider engagement in field projects as essential for the continuing health of the discipline. All trends are well represented here at King's. 

Classical Art & Archaeology at King's

Our expert staff cover wide range of specialisms including Bronze Age, Aegean, Byzantine Cyprus, Roman Britain, Persian monuments, Greek pottery and Roman mosaics, while many other staff members employ art historical and archaeological methods in their work.

London has been a centre for the collection and display of ancient art and artefacts for many centuries, a cultural engagement that has in turn had a great influence on British heritage. There is a strong commitment at King's to exploring the role that ancient art and archaeology has had and continues to have in this local context of a global capital.

MA Classical Art & Archaeology

The MA course consists of a wide range of optional modules and a research dissertation. The compulsory colloquium, Undertaking Research in Classical Archaeology, taken as preparation for writing the dissertation, provides particularly concentrated training in research techniques and methodology. Modules are taught both with texts in the original languages and with translated texts. If you intend to pursue further research in classical archaeology or art history, you may find particular value in the unique opportunities to acquire technical skills in the handling of documentary evidence provided by modules in Greek Papyrology, Greek & Roman Epigraphy, and Greek & Latin Palaeography.

As well as archaeological and art-historical topics, students can also choose modules from other MA programmes at King's, including Ancient History, Classics, and Late Antique & Byzantine Studies. Students also have the opportunity to study Latin and Ancient Greek.

The MA programme in Classical Art & Archaeology is organised on an intercollegiate basis, combining the expertise of staff in all three of the participating colleges - King's, UCL and Royal Holloway. Research seminars

In the Department of Classics we run a research seminar series (which MA students are encouraged to attend), where you will learn about the current research of our academic staff and PhD students. The Department regularly hosts major research conferences with speakers from around the world. There are also University of London research seminars organized through the Institute of Classical Studies, for example in Literature, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, where you will be able to listen to and meet leading scholars from around the world. There is also the Late Antique & Byzantine Studies seminar, which is organized by the Centre for Hellenic Studies.

Personal tutor

We will assign you a personal tutor in the Department of Classics, who will advise you and help you decide which modules to take, and can answer any questions or concerns you may have whilst at King's.

Dissertation supervision

During your first term at King's you will need to decide on your MA dissertation subject, if you have not done so before you arrive. The dissertation can be related to work you are doing for a taught module, or it can be in a completely different area. On the basis of your chosen subject area you will be assigned a supervisor within the Department of Classics who will discuss the topic with you, and oversee your work on it.

Course purpose

This programme offers advanced study of Greek and Roman archaeology and art; it is intended either as a further year's study after a first degree or as training in the technical disciplines needed to undertake doctoral research.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

We will typically provide you with six to eight hours of teaching through lectures and seminars each week, and we will expect you to undertake 35 hours of independent study. For your dissertation, we will provide five hours of supervision from a member of the Department, depending on your chosen topic, who will oversee your work on it. We will expect you to undertake 575 hours of independent study.

Assessment

We typically assess our modules through a combination of coursework and examinations, and the amount of coursework we expect you to produce will be greater for modules which are worth more credits. For your dissertation module you will write a 12,000-word thesis.

Our course combines the theory and practice of education. University based: you will work with other trainees and tutors in your subject area to consider the principles and practice of teaching your subject including curriculum design, the development of materials, classroom management and lesson planning. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and seminar groups to examine a broad range of educational issues.

During both secondary school placements there are additional days in college for tutorials to support and monitor progress towards the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are cross-curricular research tasks and assignments. School based: for 24 of the 37 weeks the training takes place in schools, mainly in two complementary secondary schools but with one short primary school experience. This introduces you to recognising key constituents of good teaching, helps develop your own teaching skills and gain an understanding of how schools work and how children learn.

School Direct Route offered: The School Direct Non Salaried teacher training route is composed of a partnership between King’s College London and a Lead School. Students apply to the Lead School for admission to the programme. The academic components of the course are delivered by King’s College London whilst the secondary school teaching experience is organised by the Lead School. 

Course purpose

For those wishing to train as teachers of pupils aged 11-18 in Latin with Classics. Our course will lead to the DfE Standards for QTS which are assessed through teaching practice observation, portfolios and written assignments.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. You can typically expect:

  • the equivalent of over 50 days of academic sessions at King’s (typically three hours in the morning and/or afternoon spread throughout the academic year)
  • approximately 120 days of teaching placement.* This includes a short primary school observation of four days.
  • five to seven tutorials across the year
  • two visits from a tutor whilst on placement to observe lessons and monitor progress
  • regular** meetings with a mentor, who will be a member of staff at your placement school, whilst on placement
  • written feedback on all credit-bearing assignments within four weeks of the deadline.

* This 120 day figure represents the standard number of placement days. In certain cases, following assessment by course tutors and mentors, students may be required to undertake a greater number of placement days to demonstrate their ability to meet the Teacher Standards.

** Typically each trainee will have a meeting with their mentor during each week they are on placement. In certain circumstances the frequency may vary.

The types of learning commitment encompassed within the course vary depending on modules. For this course one credit represents the equivalent of 10 hours of learning and engagement.

Assessment

  • The 45-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a combination of a written portfolio (equivalent to 8,000 words) and assessment of your teaching practice against the Teaching Standards as set out by the government’s Department for Education. Progress in meeting the teaching standards will be monitored through three progress reports that will be completed by staff at the placement school.
  • The 30-credit master’s-level modules will each be assessed by a written assignment of 6,000 words heavily based on in-school research that trainees undertakes.
  • The 15 credit honours-level module will be assessed by an assignment focusing on data collection methods in the school environment.

Location

Students undertake placements in secondary schools that work in partnership with King’s College London. Partnership schools are located across central London and the Greater London area. Whilst every effort is made to place PGCE trainees in local schools, due to the changing nature of initial teacher education and limited availability of placements in certain subject areas, trainees should be prepared to travel to their placement schools throughout the Greater London area and beyond.

Students also organise their own short placement at a state primary school. Further information on this short placement is provided during the course.

The Orthodontics MSc programme is based at King’s College London Dental Institute with clinical treatment clinics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which collectively with King’s College London form King’s Health Partners. Orthodontic trainees also rotate out to undertake patient treatment sessions at a number of peripheral hospital units within South East England.

The programme is based on the UK General Dental Council Orthodontic curriculum and is delivered through lectures, practical and technical teaching elements, clinical seminars, tutorials, self-directed learning, supervised clinical treatment of patients and attendance on diagnostic and multidisciplinary outpatient clinics.

Academic and clinical teaching is supported by a local virtual learning environment and also through access to the British Orthodontic Society national on-line learning programme. Assessment is through written, oral and practical examinations, clinical work-based assessments, case presentations, patient logbooks and the submission of a research dissertation.

Students undertake a dedicated research project as part of their course and the Dental Institute at King’s provides an environment enriched with internationally recognized academics to facilitate this. In recent years, students have undertaken projects incorporating many different subject areas including clinical orthodontics, craniofacial biology, dental materials science, clinical psychology and dental public health.

Students are encouraged to register and undertake a King’s Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice to further develop their educational skills. The programme complies with the principles of Erasmus and supports the European Union directives on specialisation in orthodontics.

Course purpose

The programme prepares you for the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) of one of the United Kingdom Royal Surgical Colleges, currently under conjoint status with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Passing the conjoint MSc examination will be complemented by a pass in the MOrth of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Course format and assessment

The usual training period is a minimum of 4,500 hours over the degree (3 years) whole-time or agreed equivalent within the framework of a less than full-time training programme.

The programme content is apportioned approximately as:

  • 25% academic
  • 15% research

This time allocation is flexible and will depend upon the capacity of the trainees to complete the curriculum to a competent level.

This MA course provides you with training in global and transnational history, while offering you the opportunity to pursue a personally-tailored interdisciplinary education, through optional modules offered by any department at King’s College London, or from available MA courses at our London partner institutions. Teaching

If you are a full-time student, we will give you six hours of teaching each week through lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 34 hours of self-study.

If you are a part-time student, we will give you two to four hours of teaching each week through lectures and seminars in your first year and in your second and we will expect you to undertake 16 hours of self study in your first year and your second.

For the dissertation, we will give you six hours of supervision and we will expect you to undertake 594 hours of self-study both for full-time and part-time students.

The programme combines the theory and practice of education. We work in close partnership with schools in designing, delivering and assessing our course.

University based: You will work with other trainees and tutors in your subject area to consider the principles and practice of teaching your subject including curriculum design, the development of materials, classroom management and lesson planning. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and seminar groups to examine broad generic issues. During both secondary school placements there are occasional days in college for tutorials to support and monitor progress towards the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are cross-curricular research tasks and assignments.

School based: For 24 of the 36 weeks the training takes place in schools, mainly in two complementary secondary schools but with two short primary school experiences. This introduces you to recognising key constituents of good teaching, helps develop your own teaching skills and gain an understanding of how schools work and how children learn.

- Computer Science Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses -

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are intensive and flexible programmes for graduates in IT/computing who want to teach computer science but whose degree is not a direct match or whose specialist subject knowledge needs deepening prior to training for qualified teacher status (QTS). King's College London in conjunction with Queen Mary College, University of London, has designed a 12-unit SKE programme for computer science funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

In order to be eligible for SKE (for which you may also obtain a bursary) you need an offer of a place on one of the King's PGCE programmes: either computer science or information technology and computer science. At the PGCE interview we will assess your SKE needs and determine which units you should take. Our SKE courses are also open to candidates who have PGCE offers, conditional on SKE, from other institutions. The programme runs between April and September. Please note that it is not intended for graduates in non-IT disciplines who wish to retrain in computer science: for that we recommend a conversion MSc programme (eg http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduates/programme/view/21).

- Course purpose -

Our programme is for computing/ICT specialists wishing to train to be teachers of pupils aged 11-18 in computing (previously called ICT) to GCSE level and information technology to A-level. A parallel programme, PGCE Computer Science, enables computer science specialists to train to be teach computer science to A-level. The programme will lead to the Department for Education's (HM Government) Standards for QTS which are assessed through teaching practice observation, portfolios and written assignments.

- Course format and assessment -

The 45-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a combination of a written portfolio (equivalent to 8,000 words) and assessment of your teaching practice against the teaching standards as set out by the government’s Department for Education. Progress in meeting the teaching standards will be monitored through three progress reports that will be completed by staff at the placement school.

The 30-credit master’s-level modules will each be assessed by an 8,000-word written assignment.

The 15-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a 4,000-word written assignment.

Career prospects

The majority of trainees go into teaching or other areas of education: many become heads of departments or members of senior management teams; some take up careers in educational administration in the advisory or inspection services.

They are fundamental for research and practice in fields such as the law and medicine. As individuals we increasingly communicate and record our lives and our memories in digital form. But digital information is fragile and complex and requires ongoing and active curation as we seek to ensure its longevity and innovate in its use, and exploit its social, cultural and commercial value.

This course will give you the core skills, knowledge and competencies you need to become a leader in the rapidly expanding field of digital curation. You will study a wide range of subjects including metadata, preservation, knowledge representation, digital libraries, ethics and rights management, and new digital technologies and methods, including cloud and crowd-sourcing technologies. You will also have an opportunity to undertake an internship to gain workplace experience. We want you to acquire a great deal of practical knowledge, but even more we want you to develop your critical and reflective capacities, and to acquire an understanding of the inter-dependence of developments in digital processes, technology and curatorial practice. This MA will also provide an excellent grounding if you are interested in going on to a PhD in Digital Curation or a related area.

Course purpose

The MA in Digital Curation is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in organisations and enterprises with significant volumes of digital information and knowledge. The course responds to the increasing demand for digitally literate professionals to work in education and heritage institutions, as well as wider industry by equipping students with a range of strategic, technical and practical skills to provide direction and leadership in the curation of digital information and assets.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

In your first year, Humboldt University will provide 300 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars, and they will expect you to undertake 1,200 hours of independent study.

In your second year we will provide you with 110 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 984 hours of independent study.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and exams.

Extra information

Students spend four semesters over the course of two years on the programme: two consecutive semesters at Humboldt and two semesters at King's, beginning the programme at Humboldt in all cases. 

All teaching will be in English.

This course will equip you with sufficient knowledge about the two regions to work in either of them or in international institutions. You will have the opportunity to study and understand a variety of political, economic and societal topics and to gain specialised knowledge on two topics of your choice and develop advanced research skills through two research dissertations – one for Renmin University of China and one for King’s.

Renmin University of China (RUC) is a leading research university focusing on humanities and social sciences. Its scope covers natural sciences, information technology and environmental sciences. According to the China Ministry of Education, Renmin is ranked first for the study of political science, public administration, economics, law, statistics, business administration and sociology. The School of International Studies (SIS) is one of the earliest institutes to engage in the teaching and research of political science and international affairs. Because of this, the school has established strong academic traditions and accumulated invaluable historical experience, making it a leading and influential teaching and research base in the fields of political science and international studies in China.

King’s is one of the top universities in the world, as well as one of the most recognised institutions for the study of politics, political economy and international relations. Our Department benefits from links to other departments via the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Law and Governance, making us an excellent place to study contemporary European affairs.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You will have regular contact with our staff, who are world-leading experts in their fields, through lectures, seminars and supervision.

In year 1, students are expected to successfully complete 28 RUC credits. In year 2, students will have six hours per week of teaching during term time as well as 34 hours of self-study per week.

For Renmin University of China, one credit equates to 16 class hours.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work at King’s.

Assessment

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations and may typically expect assessment by: 50% examination and 50% coursework in year 1, and 100% coursework in year 2.

Year 2: The majority of European and International Studies modules are assessed by a 4,000-word essay; other optional modules may differ. The dissertation module is assessed by a 10,000 word essay.

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect.

Career prospects

Students undertaking this course would be ideally placed to work in the public sector, in government and international organisations, particularly in departments working on European and/or Asian issues. The Public Health MSc, PG Dip, PG Cert provides a comprehensive and integrated education in public health through a multidisciplinary study approach which is both academic and vocational. It draws upon the wealth of research, education and clinical expertise in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and is delivered by the Department of Primary Care & Public Health Sciences which has forged strong international links, particularly with US and European research and teaching partners.

The course aims to enable you to develop a critical understanding of public health providing the foundations for pursuing a career in public health, or for enhancing existing practice and facilitating career advancement, particularly through contributing to the emerging evidence base for public health interventions.

Students study a suite of modules which provide a comprehensive understanding of public health.
