This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course; one day per week until January; occasional week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days. A minimum of 120 days is spent in schools.
Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by your LJMU tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your personal tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.

You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.

The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.

The University element of the programme is based around six core modules focusing on:

-Professional Practice (a series of school-based investigations of current issues)
-Developing Reflective Professional Practice (enabling you to effectively evaluate your school-based practice)
-Pedagogy in the Early Years (in depth support and practical training in a specialist area, drawing on the latest research and classroom-based innovation)
-Pedagogy in Practice (focusing on the skills required for effective teaching and learning including medium-term planning and assessment)
-Learning Teaching and Assessment (developing your skills in school-based action research so that you can identify what works best for your learners)
-Inclusion (ensuring you are fully prepared to meet the diverse needs of your classes)

Why specialise in an Early Years PGCE?

The PGCE course qualifies you to teach any age group, but this pathway will allow you to experience the majority of your placements in Early Years Foundation Stage (nursery and reception) and Key Stage 1 (Year 1 or Year 2) and give you opportunities to develop your understanding of pedagogy with an early years focus.

Bursaries

The Government provides the following bursaries to be off-set against tuition fees, via the Training Agency. Tuition fees need to be paid by all students direct to LSBU. Students can use any bursary they receive from the Training Agency for this purpose.

As a primary teacher specialising in the early years, you could be eligible for a training bursary of £3,000 with a first, 2:1, Master’s or PhD.

You do not need to apply for bursaries. Once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer of a place on a Teacher Training course (and supplied proof of your degree grade) the University will liaise with the Department for Education to put your bursary in place.

Modules

H Level Modules:
- Key Stage 1 core curriculum
This module covers all aspects of the English, mathematics, science and computing national curriculum at Key Stage 1.

- Professional studies
This module covers theories of learning, planning, teaching and assessment, classroom management and employment.

- Foundation subjects
This module covers the national curriculum foundation subjects including: history, geography, art and design, music, and design technology and links this to progression from the early years areas of learning and development.

- School experience
School experience begins in week four of the course. During your Reading Mentor placement you'll be placed in a local school three times a week, gaining experience in the teaching of reading. You'll have opportunities to work with a designated child to develop an in-depth understanding of how teaching relates to pupil learning and progress. Your first block school experience is eight weeks and culminates with you leading a class. School experience 2 is a nine week block, and by the end of this placement you will be expected to teach the whole class for up to three days a week.

- Alternative education setting
In term two you will arrange your own placement following your interests in an Alternative Education Setting. This placement is designed to give you a wider view of education and develop explicit skills that you will then be able to take into mainstream practice. For example you may choose to work in a Special Educational Needs setting or in a Pupil Referral Unit.

M Level Modules:
- Equality, inclusion and citizenship
This module will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context. You'll undertake a small piece of classroom research.

- Early Years Education
This module provides you with the academic background that underpins key educational concepts and learning development theory in the Early Years. The module supports you in developing your understanding of how to plan and manage the curriculum across the Early Years phase and appropriately deploy resources and manage staff and home-school links.

Employability

The success of our PGCE courses has been recognised by Ofsted and we have been identified as a good provider of initial teacher training. Completion and employment rates for our PGCE are both above the sector norms (OFSTED 2014).

All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education) gained via further study after graduation.

Placements

During the course you'll spend 24 weeks on school placements which you'll undertake in at least two schools. There will be a specialised reading placement and a placement in an Alternative Educational Setting, allowing experience of working in the relevant age phases (Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1). Placement schools are chosen to provide different experiences including size, organisation and location.

Our partnership works with a wide range of nurseries and schools across London. Placements are allocated as best fit for each trainee, but if you live in outer London or beyond it may require careful planning by you so that you are able to work at assigned schools.

Teaching and learning

The university based sessions are taught through lectures, workshops, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials. The aim throughout is to encourage creativity, reflective pedagogy and sensitivity to educational issues, aims and objectives. We aim to provide a learning community that actively challenges inequality and injustice.

In particular, the module on Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context.

You will be encouraged to make links between the theoretical and practical elements of the course. We use an interactive model of teaching and learning and you will be encouraged to think critically about subjects to inform your understanding of effective methods of teaching and learning and how best to apply these in classroom situations.

What will I study?

The programme starts with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit, to identify your main strengths and weaknesses, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs.

The PGCE consists of four main elements:

- Personal and Professional Development – you will develop your learning skills and will learn how to reflect upon and take charge of your own development as a trainee teacher. Gaining knowledge of how children learn and how their needs differ, you will also develop strategies for the core skills of planning, assessment, teaching and class management, along with an understanding of the education system, and of the wider professional role of a teacher in school. A critical appreciation of theoretical perspectives, philosophies and research-based findings will also be conveyed;

- Curriculum – you will learn about the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 for each subject and how to plan, teach, and assess it across the whole primary age range. You will also learn about the Early Years Foundation Stage and the areas of Learning and Development within this;

- Specialist Strand – you will follow this both at Edge Hill University and in school. The aim is to enable you to pursue your own particular interests in Early Years and prepare for an eventual leadership role in schools or settings;

- Research Specialism – you will be immersed in the contemporary key theories and principles of early years education and undertake a relevant small-scale research project.
The importance of play-based learning will be examined in each element. Cross-curricular themes are also considered as are the practical skills of planning for learning, promoting positive attitudes and working in an extended team and with parents and carers.

One of the most important elements of this programme is the practical teaching experience you will gain through placement in one of our partnership schools or nurseries. This hands-on approach is combined with tutor-led sessions and self-study so that you can increase your ability to plan, teach and manage the learning of children aged 3-7 years. You will learn how to teach pupils across the ability range, how to assess pupils’ progress in learning, manage behaviour and maintain a happy learning environment.

The programme will develop your understanding of how children learn and also consider behaviour management, child development and other important professional issues related to the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. You will be encouraged to develop as a reflective and well informed professional.

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, practical and work-based learning in the classroom will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become an excellent teacher. You will be supported by online and distance learning materials and encouraged to develop key skills, including the use of ICT, to support your own learning.

The course involves a significant amount of time in schools and settings. You will complete a series of placements in Early Years Foundation Stage classrooms (age range 3-7 years) and Key Stage 1 classrooms (age range 5-7 years). Here, you will work alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development.

In schools and Early Years settings you will undertake a range of differentiated training experiences which will be closely linked to your individual targets. Your teaching timetable will increase in relation to responsibility, as your training progresses and you become more confident and competent in the classroom. You will progressively assume the responsibility for the children and their achievement and progress, involving excellence in teaching, learning and assessment.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against the Professional Standards for QTS.

Before the end of your PGCE you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

Our Primary PGCE develops effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers. We will help students to acquire the skills and expertise to support children’s learning, prepare them to teach in an inclusive urban environment, provide professional development in all national curriculum subjects and ensure that students show a concern for professional values and demonstrate the positive attitudes and behaviour expected from pupils.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules as part of the PGCE, with a total of 60 Master’s credits on successful completion.

The programme consists of three core modules, two at Master’s-level (level 7) and one at Undergraduate-level (level 6) and three school placements.

Where less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) - including a QTS recommendation - will be awarded. Students who complete the level 7 modules but fail the Professional Practice module will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) which excludes the QTS.

An additional pathway is available for those who wish to study full-time. There are no optional modules for this programme.

Placement
As part of the programme students will spend time on placements at schools or Early Years Centres, during which time their teaching experience will be supported by a tutor and mentor. Students will spend 120 days on placements.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and self-study. Students will be supported though a virtual learning environment and will participate in school placements. Assessment is through assignments, presentations, audits, feedback and tutorials. A final assessment is based on a range of evidence including observations of teaching, assignments, subject knowledge development, professional conduct and responses to self-study.

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Most are working as classroom teachers and mentors to PGCE students, while others have jobs as deputy and assistant headteachers. Graduates in this area can also be found working as headteachers and educational consultants.

Employability
The Primary PGCE was rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2013. IOE student teachers are in rated highly by headteachers across London and beyond.

Course content

This intensive one year programme is designed for graduates wishing to teach children aged three to seven (Early Years and Key Stage 1). The programme supports Early Years teacher trainees in developing the skills, knowledge and understanding required to demonstrate the professional standards for teaching required by the Department for Education. On successful completion, trainees are recommended for and awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Teaching approaches are highly interactive, being delivered by a team of tutors with expertise in both the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and at KS1. The programme prepares trainees to teach the EYFS and the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1, with an emphasis on national priorities, including systematic synthetic phonics and early mathematics. Trainees will also study professional issues including classroom organisation, the role of play in learning, behaviour management, planning, assessment, equal opportunities and inclusion.

The programme promotes professional and academic development with modules at level 6 and 7. Trainees will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with QTS. Modules
The course is made up of modules which integrate experience in schools and nurseries with professional and curriculum studies. You complete two masters levels modules. One enables you to evaluate and reflect on your own progress as a teacher, and the second enables you to explore a chosen area in more depth in your school or setting and with colleagues in that setting.

The other modules assess your ability against the teacher standards. You are assessed in foundation stage and in Key Stage 1.

Assessment
Your academic work is assessed by written coursework assignments. Your teaching is assessed in schools and by school based mentors. You record evidence of your progress towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in a professional development portfolio.This course is assessed at masters level and we expect most students to achieve this. However, some students may not attain this level of academic work. These students may be awarded a Professional Certificate in Education, provided they have passed all elements of the course at undergraduate level, and have met all the standards for QTS.

Other admission requirements

You must also pass QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, and complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms. As a student on this course, you will study the foundation stage and the primary, and develop the ability to evaluate critically and reflect upon the principles of teaching and learning. You will gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of a range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, and learn how to use and adapt them to meet the varying needs of the youngest learners.

The course is taught at the university's School of Education, one of the UK's largest providers of teacher training with an excellent national reputation, and by tutors who are themselves all experienced teachers.

Professional accreditation

This course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which allows you to teach in England and Wales.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (POSTGCE) award includes masters-level credits which can be used towards a masters degree. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PROFGCE) award is available for students who do not achieve the masters-level elements of the course.

Course structure

This course is developed in accordance with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS) and the primary curriculum.

The university-based studies comprise group work and independent study, seminars and lecture sessions. Here you will study the newly revised primary curriculum as well as a broad spectrum of issues concerning teaching and learning. Your studies will encompass both area of learning specific sessions as well as integrated project learning that spans multiple areas. The links between theory and practice will be explored throughout the year. In addition to your university-based studies, the course includes two block school placements to help you gain an understanding of both the Key Stage 1 and the Foundation Stage settings. You will also spend an additional three weeks in an early years or primary school setting, focusing on classroom-based research and group teaching.

Areas of study

This is an intensive year, approximately half of which is spent in partnership schools/settings where the training of student teachers is a shared activity between the university and practitioners. Students take six taught modules (in addition to the two school placement modules). These sessions support and extend the school/practice-based study so that links between theory and practice are explored throughout the year.

The Education Studies programme develops students' understanding of the processes through which learning occurs, including an appreciation of individual differences and the study of the principles and practices of learning and teaching. Students study the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with modules that support the development of subject knowledge in curriculum areas as well as the themes and principles relevant to the Early Years.

The design of the course is underpinned by modules that facilitate students' engagement with subject curriculum areas (KS1) and the Early Years Foundation Stage 6 areas of learning as well as the skills and dispositions that encourage a confident, meaningful and creative interpretation of the curriculum.

A discrete Early Years studies module focuses on the distinct nature of the context and age-phase specific issues, eg transition, partnership with families and parents and leadership. Students learn about the role of play, the environment, the role of the Early Years practitioner and value of talk and sustained shared thinking as integral to all modules. The Professional Studies module provides students with the skills necessary for the role of the reflective and critical teacher and this includes some study at masters-level. All students are enrolled onto the Postgraduate Certificate in Education but an alternative exit award, the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, which also includes QTS, is available for students who do not achieve the masters-level elements of the postgraduate programme.

Bursaries

The Government provides the following bursaries to be off-set against tuition fees, via the Training Agency. Tuition fees need to be paid by all students direct to LSBU. Students can use any bursary they receive from the Training Agency for this purpose.

If you have a 1st Class or 2.1 Degree or a PhD you will be eligible for a bursary of £3,000

You do not need to apply for bursaries. Once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer of a place on a Teacher Training course (and supplied proof of your degree grade) the University will liaise with the Department for Education to put your bursary in place.

H Level Modules:
- Core curriculum
This module covers all aspects of the English, mathematics, science and computing national curriculum at Key Stage 1 and 2.

- Professional studies
This module covers theories of learning, planning, teaching and assessment, classroom management and employment.

- Foundation subjects
This module covers the national curriculum foundation subjects including: history, geography, art and design, music, and design technology.

- School experience
School experience begins in week four of the course. During your Reading Mentor placement you'll be placed in a local school three times a week, gaining experience in the teaching of reading. You'll have opportunities to work with a designated child to develop an in-depth understanding of how teaching relates to pupil learning and progress. Your first block school experience is eight weeks and culminates with you leading a class. School experience 2 is a nine week block, and by the end of this placement you will be expected to teach the whole class for up to three days a week.

- Alternative education setting
In term two you will arrange your own placement following your interests in an Alternative Education Setting. This placement is designed to give you a wider view of education and develop explicit skills that you will then be able to take into mainstream practice. For example you may choose to work in a Special Educational Needs setting or in a Pupil Referral Unit.

M Level Modules:
- Equality, inclusion and citizenship
This module will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context. You'll undertake a small piece of classroom research.

Plus one of the following module options:
- SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability)
This module discusses and explores how to enable learners with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to achieve in their learning. If you select this module your first block school experience will in in a Special Needs school and your Alternative Education Assessment will be in a main stream school.

- Connect, consume, create: ICT in the Primary School
Explore the most up-to-date research, knowledge and understanding that underpins ICT and the Computing curriculum in primary schools.

- Performing Arts
Prepares you to teach the performing arts subjects in a culturally diverse society.

- Raising Achievement in Mathematics (RAiM)
The RAiM module will help you gain knowledge and understanding to successfully teach mathematics with competence and confidence, and begin to develop as a specialist in this area. Part of your Alternative Education Setting placement will be in a mathematics department of a secondary school.

- English: Language, learning and culture
This module focuses on spoken language as a key area of the English curriculum in order to explore culture and deepen learning in the classroom.

Employability

Completion and employment rates for our PGCE are both above the sector norms and we have been identified as a good provider of initial teacher training (OFSTED 2014). Although we pride ourselves in providing teachers for London schools, successful students enter the teaching profession in a variety of schools/nurseries within the UK.

All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education) gained via further study after graduation.

Placements

During the course you will undertake placements in at least two schools. Placement schools are chosen to provide different experiences including size, organisation and location. Our partnership works with a wide range schools across London. Placements are allocated as best fit for each trainee, but if you live in outer London or beyond it may require careful planning by you so that you are able to work at assigned schools.

In addition you will undertake a placement in an alternative education setting. The choice of placement will depend on the option you choose and your interest in the education sector. Examples of placements include SEN schools, pupil referral units, hospitals, overseas etc.

A key element of the programme is to prepare you to work in multi-cultural, urban settings. In terms of school experience placements you will normally be required to do at least one practice in an inner or outer London state school.

Teaching and learning

The university based sessions are taught through lectures, workshops, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials. The aim throughout is to encourage creativity, reflective pedagogy and sensitivity to educational issues, aims and objectives. We aim to provide a learning community that actively challenges inequality and injustice.

In particular, the module on Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context.

You will be encouraged to make links between the theoretical and practical elements of the course. We use an interactive model of teaching and learning and you will be encouraged to think critically about subjects to inform your understanding of effective methods of teaching and learning and how best to apply these in classroom situations.

The Early Years Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1 full-time route will prepare students in line with the requirements of the Teachers’ Standards (2012) for the award of QTS. UCL works in partnership with around 350 primary schools, nurseries and children’s centres to enable students to fully prepare to be a primary teacher with an EY/KS1 focus.

Degree information

Students on this programme will have the opportunity to develop into effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers. On completion of the programme students will have a clear understanding of progression, since the QTS qualification applies to the whole primary age-range, whilst a student's teaching experience will be in early years foundation stage (EYFS) and KS1.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules as part of the PGCE with a total of 60 Master’s credits on successful completion.

The programme consists of three core modules, two at Master’s-level (level ) and one at Undergraduate-level (level 6) and three school placements.

This programme provides graduates with an excellent preparation for their first job teaching in a primary school, as well as moving on to key stage coordinator roles, other leadership positions and eventually headships. The aim of the PGCE Primary and PGCE Early Years course is to enable you to become a reflective, critical and enquiring primary teacher, able to respond flexibly to changing circumstances and to continue to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills throughout your professional life.

Whilst the PGCE is an academic qualification, the emphasis is very much on practical experience with approximately two thirds of the course spent in school.

We are able to offer applicants a choice of routes:

• Full-time 3-7 Age Phase - 1 Year Course
• Full-time 5-11 Age Phase - 1 Year Course

In addition to the age phase options, students on all routes will also be able to opt to take a specialist module in either a National Curriculum Core area, Modern Foreign Languages or another specialism depending on numbers. In addition students on the 3-7 route can opt to take a specialist module in Early Years, this combined pathway of study leads to the PGCE Early Years qualification.

All trainees are trained to teach across the range of subjects in the Primary National Curriculum with a strong focus on English and mathematics.

KEY FACTS
This course has very high employability rates and many of our trainees gain employment in local primary schools. Trainees are supported with the application process as part of their course.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership bursaries are available for trainees on eligible postgraduate courses in England who are not employed as a teacher. Bursary amounts will vary depending on degree class.

We work hard to ensure that we have strong relationships with more than 900 primary schools in the region. All schools sign a partnership agreement in which they pledge a commitment to the quality of experience they offer our trainees.

In the latest Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Survey (2011-13 aggregated data) 94 per cent of Birmingham City University trained primary teachers rated the quality of their training as 'good' or 'very good'.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will have (or expect to achieve before enrolment) a Bachelor's Honours degree, at upper Second Class level or above from a UK higher education institution or a recognised equivalent in a subject that provides the necessary foundation for work as a primary teacher. Trainees expecting to take a specialist module in a core subject, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) or Early Years must have an appropriate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent understanding and experience.

GCSE at grade C or above (or its equivalent) in English, mathematics and a science subject is also necessary at the point of application. For entry onto a teaching course from September 2013 you will also be required to pass the Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy.

It is essential for applicants to have spent time in British state primary schools and have some familiarity with the current National Curriculum before submitting an application.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for Initial Teacher Training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

COURSE STRUCTURE
Attendance on the full-time course is Monday to Friday, while faculty sessions for part-time students take place on no more than two days per week. However, the part-time route block teaching practice modules are full-time. The full-time course runs over three terms from September, ending in July the following year. The part-time course runs over six terms from September in the first year to July in the second year.

FURTHER STUDY
Our MA Education and Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) programmes are designed to serve the continuing professional development (CPD) needs of teachers. On successful completion of the PGCE course you will be entitled to enter these programmes. Master's level credits from the PGCE course will count towards the Master's qualifications.

Trainees qualify with QTS to teach across the five to eleven age ranges thus giving them access to a teaching career in Key stage 1 or Key stage 2.
The programme ensures successful outcomes for its graduates.

Work placement opportunities

We work in partnership with schools across Northamptonshire and its neighbouring counties. This enables us to work with a diverse range of schools, meaning we can give students a range of experiences. There are also opportunities for school experience in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school.

You must pass the National College for Teaching and Leadership Professional Skills tests in numeracy and literacy before commencement of the course. Teaching is a challenging, exciting and very rewarding career with a high level of job satisfaction. It is a great privilege, as well as a great responsibility, to be one of the first teachers to influence a child.

In this one-year postgraduate course you study the Foundation Curriculum and the core National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 (English, mathematics and science), and are particularly equipped to teach the Foundation Curriculum to pre-school and reception children and Key Stage 1. You also study theory surrounding early childhood learning.

Course detail

On this 38-week course, you spend 19 weeks in schools and 19 in the Department of Education at UWE. The course is designed so that your experiences in these two sites of learning are integrated. In school, you carry out directed tasks that support your learning in the Department of Education, and study in the Department of Education informs your practice in the classroom.

Seminars and lectures equip you to meet the standards to teach and assess the core subjects of Maths, English and Science and, with support, the foundation subjects of the National Curriculum. Trainees are also offered a subject specialism.

Format

We have a contemporary approach to teaching and learning, making full use of up-to-date technology. The course is conducted through lectures, seminars, tutorials and group tasks. The lecturing team has a wide range of recent teaching experience in schools.

With in the department there are workshop areas where you practise many of the practical and school-focused aspects of primary education.

You are allocated a General Professional Studies Tutor who acts as an anchor person during the course and helps with preparation for a professional career in schools.

Placements

Approximately half the course is school-based where you gain in-depth experience in three different types of school during the year. Each block of school experience is preceded by several serial days of observation and planning.

Assessment

Assessment is based on five professionally based assignments and the final block school experience.

Careers / Further study

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses now include 40 credits of assessment at Master's Level (Level M). If you opt not to attempt the requisite credit at Level M, a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education will be available as an alternative award.

The government are introducing a master’s loan scheme, whereby master’s students under 60 can access a loan of up to £10,000 as a contribution towards the cost of their study. This is part of the government’s long-term commitment to enhance support for postgraduate study.
