Our course takes an informative, critical and reflective stance in relation to the key texts of Jung, the diverse contexts from which analytical psychology emerged, and the core concepts developed by Jung, post-Jungian scholars and clinicians. ABOUT MA DRAMA AND MOVEMENT THERAPY (SESAME)

The MA Drama and Movement Therapy is an intensive course providing professional and vocational training in drama and movement therapy and the Sesame approach, and is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The course offers a particular pedagogic approach to learning the craft of dramatherapy, which is underpinned by Jungian psychology and the importance of practice-based learning. The combination of intensive movement-based studio practice, collaborative facilitations, seminars, and a shared research unit with other MA students creates a learning environment that encourages personal exploration, collaboration and critical reflection. Particularly in the first term, there is the opportunity for immersive practice in the key subject areas of Laban movement, myth, movement with touch and sound and drama. This is allied by study into key psychological concepts, which can inform the theories and practices of dramatherapy. The group process is central to the student experience and supported by a weekly session across the first three terms that explores interpersonal dynamics between members and draws from group analytic theory.

PLACEMENTS

The placements are at the heart of the training and begin in the second term with the hallmark apprenticeship model. This offers well-supported early clinical practice with a specialist and qualified supervisor working alongside groups of two or three Students in different placement settings. All apprenticeship placements are arranged by Central and will normally include working with adults with mental health problems, elderly clients with dementia, people with learning disabilities, children
with challenging behaviour and people on the autistic spectrum. The apprenticeship model is used for placements in the spring and summer terms. In the extended fourth term, students will work more autonomously and have the opportunity to specialise
their clinical practice. All placement work is closely supported throughout the course through group and individual supervision.

All graduates are eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council for membership as an arts therapist (drama).

ASSESSMENT

By a range of methods which include viva voce exams, written assignments and assessment of clinical practice and ongoing group work. There is ongoing tutor, peer and self-assessment.

Course summary

This course is designed for experienced artists and professionals who have worked within a clinical setting and would like to build a rewarding career as an art psychotherapist.

You will be taught by leading experts who will equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as an art psychotherapist in challenging, yet rewarding environments. Our graduating students are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Registered practitioners work in a variety of different settings including psychiatric hospitals, social services departments, special education, prisons and the voluntary sector.

Our comprehensive programme is divided into three areas covering theory, experiential learning and work placement experience. The theoretical aspect covers child developmental and psychodynamic principles alongside art therapy theory and Jungian analytical psychology. This perspective is located within the larger field of analytical psychotherapy and provides you with an in-depth theoretical underpinning that informs clinical practice. 

A vital part of the programme is a supervised clinical placement which allows you to complete one hundred mandatory days of practice during your training. Placements are available in a variety of settings that include mental health (both in the NHS and other psychiatric hospitals and day centres), disabilities services or in hospitals or social services, special education, or a range of other settings. 

Content

The course is divided into three distinct areas; theory, which will develop your understanding as it relates to clinical practice, experiential learning where you will engage in art therapeutic processes to develop an understanding of the discipline from the inside while developing your identity as an artist, and lastly, a work placement. You will also get the opportunity to collaborate with the other students within the arts and play therapies in workshops and shared modules.

Our full-time course starts with an intensive week followed by two taught days, two further days of clinical placement and one day for studio practice per week. The part-time route starts with an intensive week followed by one day per week in University and a minimum of one further day on clinical placement. You will need to complete one hundred days of supervised clinical practice over the duration of the programme. You will also attend weekly personal therapy which is compulsory to become a professional registered practitioner.

Our unique MA in Management and Organisational Dynamics, offered jointly by the Essex Business School and the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, aims to equip you with powerful tools to support your development as a future leader, manager, organisational consultant, researcher or executive coach.

Drawing upon both critical management theory and the developing field of systems-psychodynamics, this innovative course will be of particular interest to anyone who wishes to understand the complex processes that impact on change in organisations.

The integrated approach provides a deep analysis of the way organisations function, the nature of leadership and the way organisational structure and dynamics contribute to the operation of groups and systems.

Learning is through taught and experiential elements, providing a platform for both further academic study and creative intervention in organisations. There are five taught modules, including an organisational observation and a residential group relations event. Those who are new to psychoanalytic approaches are required to attend a short pre-sessional course on Freud.

The course is offered one year full-time, two years part-time or modular (up to five years). Teaching takes place on Wednesday during term-time in the first year and Tuesday in the second year for part-time students. Full-time students attend both days for one academic year.

The Studies in Philosophy and Religion MRes Distance Learning Programme is scheduled for a duration of one year (full-time) or three years (part-time). It is tailor-made to suit your interests in consultation with the areas of expertise offered by the School. It is designed also to suit the needs of those who are unable to attend time-tabled sessions at Bangor. It comprises two parts.)

Part 1:

Students will write two essays, each of 5000 words (30 credits each). The essay titles and content will be decided in consultation with your supervisor. The Professional Doctorate in Intercultural Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy programme consists of substantial taught and research components (50% each), and requires supervised clinical practice of two patients (one for 18 months and one for 24). The candidate needs to be in personal analysis with a clinician member and/or approved by the RTC of at least twice a week for one year prior to seeing patients.

Students learn the application of theory to innovative clinical practice; acquire the skills, knowledge and experience to practice as independent Intercultural Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists after full qualification and registration with the RTC.

This exciting and innovative programme is aimed at clinicians and senior professionals working within health and social care settings. The programme has been developed as a partnership between Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the Refugee Therapy Centre (RTC). Completion of the course will lead to a QMUL degree, and registration with the RTC as a fully qualified Intercultural therapist. RTC is an organisation member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Council for Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis (CPJA).
