The Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) offers intensive, post graduate-level studies to students who wish to qualify as a barrister.

The BPTC is taken after undergraduate study and before the period of work based training, also known as pupillage, required for those training to become barristers.

This programme will prepare you for the 12 months of pupillage and ensure that you acquire the skills, knowledge of procedure and evidence, attitudes and competence required during your work based training. It will also provide you with a solid foundation in knowledge and skills for your early years of tenancy.

The BPTC aims to foster a professional and ethical approach to practice as a barrister, whilst giving you an informed view of a barrister’s working life.

Distinctive features

We have delivered a high quality and highly regarded Bar Professional Training Course/Bar Vocational Course since 1997. Distinctive features include:

• a guaranteed period of two weeks' placement (offering mini-pupillage with a local Chambers or other placement with the employed Bar, and marshalling with a local Circuit Judge and District Judge);

• a high level of individual feedback and support on performance in oral and written skills;

• a course strongly supported by the local employed Bar, the independent Bar and the Judiciary;

• the opportunity to practise all skills exceeds the Bar Standards Board’s minimum recommended number.

Structure

The BPTC is a one year course studied over three terms. All modules within this programme are compulsory and comprise knowledge areas, core skills and options. An attendance record is kept and 100% attendance at teaching sessions is expected.

During the first and second term you will be taught and assessed in the following areas:

• Civil litigation evidence and remedies
• Criminal litigation evidence & remedies

You will develop the core skills of :

Submission advocacy
Trial advocacy 1 and 2
Conference skills
Drafting
Opinion writing
Professional ethics
Resolution of disputes out of court

In the final term, you will select two optional subjects. As well as developing legal skills within the curriculum, you will have opportunities to acquire hands-on experience by taking part in:

• several pro-bono schemes run by the School of Law and Politics;
• other activities such as mooting, negotiating, client interviewing competitions and legal discussion groups.

Teaching

You will be taught through a mixture of lectures and small group sessions. Most teaching is delivered in small groups of 12 students with all oral skills teaching in smaller groups of six students.

You will have practice opportunities through your teaching that exceed the minimum indicated by the Bar Standards Board. The timing of teaching sessions and assessments has also been carefully considered to ensure that you have sufficient opportunity to practise and receive feedback. This is essential to enable you to refine your work and skills as a result of feedback received.

Assessment

The BPTC assessments are designed to be fair, rigorous, realistic and provide sufficient depth and/or breadth of coverage of the skills and subjects assessed. Individual assessments will cover a representation of the outcomes in the particular subject or skills area. A practical emphasis will appear throughout.

Each skills teaching session is a formative session; in addition you will undertake a practice assessment for each of the core subjects studied in terms one and two. These assessments will be undertaken in circumstances that reflect the arrangements for the summative assessments.

Three assessments, civil litigation evidence and remedies, criminal litigation evidence and remedies and professional ethics will be assessed by way of a centrally set paper produced by the Bar Standards Board.

For all Cardiff-produced BPTC assessments, the assessment criteria and, where relevant, guidance/explanatory notes will be made available to you from the outset of the subject. The assessment criteria for each subject are clearly aligned with its learning outcomes to ensure you can demonstrate you have achieved the learning outcomes for the subject through the assessment.

There are 12 summative assessments. Four are knowledge assessments, one in each of the following:

Civil litigation and evidence
Criminal litigation, evidence and sentencing
Professional ethics
Resolution of disputes out of court.

There are eight skills assessments, in each of the following:

Conference skills
Opinion writing
Drafting
Advocacy (one assessment with oral plus written components and two oral assessments; examination in chief and cross examination).
Option one (written or oral)
Option two (written or oral)

Career prospects

After completion of the BPTC you will be able to undertake a pupillage in preparation for practice as a barrister.

Alternatively, the BPTC may be lead to legal work in some other capacity, e.g. paralegal or legal executive, with the option of seeking pupillage at a later date.

Research in the department primarily focuses on solving real world problems, ensuring that our theoretically strong work has an impact outside academia. The programme runs as a series of four distinct and assessed courses:

- Entrepreneurial awareness and skills
- Opportunity recognition and idea evaluation

All four courses and the associated assignments must be successfully completed to the standards required by the University in order to gain the Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship.

Format

The programme is run on a part-time basis and takes place over 12 months leading to the qualification of Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship awarded by the University of Cambridge. The programme is delivered largely online through a dedicated interactive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Students are required to attend two intensive and participative residential sessions at the Cambridge Judge Business School: one week at the start and a further two weeks at the mid-point of the programme.

The majority of the programme is delivered online with students expected to spend a minimum of 172 hours over the 12 months engaged in online study. The students receive supervisions via one-to-one tutoring and mentoring for about 18 hours per year (14 hours with mentors and 4 with course tutors). Some of these supervisions are delivered remotely (e.g. by phone call or Skype); some are face-to-face during residential sessions.

Students are expected to review and summarise academic literature related to each course of the programme. Students deliver a summatively assessed oral presentation during the second residential session of the programme.

Assessment

1 x Enterprise project. A coherent major project, requiring students to conceptualise an entrepreneurial business opportunity, analyse and evaluate market feasibility, prepare a robust business case and devise and present strategy and implementation plans for their project (14,000 words) – 50% of overall marks for the programme.

1 x Reflective essay. Demonstrating and analysing progressive learning and development (2,500 words) – 10% of overall marks for the programme.

Class tests within each of the residential sessions to explore students critical understanding of core academic content – 10% of overall marks for the programme.

1 x Oral presentation of the enterprise project to assess both application of knowledge and presentation skills – 10% of overall marks for the programme.

Active participation in online learning activities and discussions, assessed according to published objective criteria related to course outcomes – 20% of overall marks for the programme.
Students receive detailed written feedback after each written assignment and have the opportunity to discuss this feedback with their assigned tutor.

Helmsmanship

Helmsmanship is a unique, two year, non-award bearing course which will help you to develop the non-clinical skills required for consultant-level appointments at tertiary centres. The course is designed to provide personalised comprehensive training in the attributes required to be an effective senior clinician.

It is delivered by Cambridge University Health Partners together with the Judge Business School. The faculty includes clinicians, senior NHS managers, organisational development consultants, Judge Business School academics, and experts from the wider Cambridge community.

The course is practically focussed, developing advanced skills in education, teamworking, leadership and management in an environment which encourages personal development, organisational intelligence, iconoclasm, and resilience. It is delivered in a variety of formats, using innovative tools to engender skills such as consultant level responsibility, development and improvement of clinical and non-clinical services, change management, and the effective supervision of teams and engagement with colleagues.

Helmsmanship is not delivered in any other environment and is designed to fit within the Clinical Medicine Programme at Cambridge.

Assessment

Students are assessed throughout the taught modules of the programme using a variety of techniques and interrelated strategies including evidence of regular reflection. Demonstration of active participation in the programme will be required. There may also be a requirement for the students to take part in peer review of other students.

The MPhil in Technology Policy is an intensive, nine-month professional practice master's programme designed for people with a background in science or engineering who are interested in developing the skills needed to meet the challenges of integrating technology, management, economics and policy. Although the programme straddles the boundary of business and government and has a strong common core taken by all students on the programme, it allows for more in-depth study of public and private enterprise perspectives.

The programme's focus is on business–government interactions, and its aim is to provide students with both the wider political and institutional context and the analytical skills delivered by Cambridge Judge Business School faculty working in operations, strategy and, most especially, economics and policy. The MPhil in Technology Policy programme provides the context and skills needed to cope with the rapidly evolving environment in many technology-rich sectors, including information and communications technology, defence and aerospace, energy and electricity, manufacturing, transport and logistics, pharmaceuticals and health.

Educational aims of the programme are to prepare students for doctoral work in the fields of strategy, marketing or operations at CJBS (the programme is an integral part of the CJBS PhD programme for these fields, by:

  • providing teaching in research methodology, in particular in econometrics and mathematical modelling;
  • providing teaching in foundational subjects, such as economics; and
  • providing research seminars in which students will learn about the current debates in their field of specialisation and about the canonical literature that underpins these debates.

Learning Outcomes

Students will receive confirmation of a PhD offer in February.

Learning Outcomes

Students will gain a sound understanding of finance theory, financial products, financial reporting, valuation, etc., derived from a programme of core courses. Format

The MFin programme consists of core courses, a range of electives covering the main areas of applied finance, projects which enable the integration of theory and practice, a weekly City Speaker Series seminar and a number of summer activities.

Teaching is typically delivered through formal lectures, supported by classes and workshops, and supervised group and individual projects.

Students will normally attend an average of 20 hours of lectures per week, as well as regular guest speaker events, though this varies depending on the term and the choice of modules.

Workshops are delivered on some courses by faculty and teaching assistants from within the Finance and Accounting subject group.

Placements

As part of the summer component of the programme, students may wish to pursue an internship with a bank or financial institution. A number of internships are sourced through the programme.

Assessment

Assessment is achieved through a mix of written examinations, essays, projects and presentations. The assessment methods vary on elective courses, with some courses using a combination of methods.

Students are assessed by individual and group written assignments and presentations with a fixed word limit.

Core courses are mostly assessed through a single examination.

Students are assessed on the presentation of the Equity Research Project and the Group Consulting Project.

Students are assessed by attendance at the City Speaker Series, Finance and Organisations Series and Management Practice sessions.

Students receive qualitative and quantitative feedback on most of their assignments. For examinations they receive quantitative feedback in line with Cambridge University regulations.

European law and EU law in particular are now more relevant than ever. At King's you will be studying for an LLM in European Law at one of the most exciting times in EU history. At King's you will not only be taught in a range of areas of EU law, you will also be part of an EU law community, built around the Centre of European Law, which was set up as far back as 1975. Course purpose

This programme allows you to deepen or to broaden your knowledge of law as an academic subject and assists your professional development by enhancing your problem-solving skills in a transnational context. Designed to maximise students' intellectual potential, it also keeps you grounded by drawing on the real world experiences of staff and other practitioners.

The LLM offers a sharpened focus on our key areas of excellence and a commitment to offer a premier programme and a world class student experience.

Aimed at recent law graduates (or graduates of joint degrees with a significant law content) as well as established legal professionals who may have graduated a number of years ago, the programme is rigorous and demanding and requires serious commitment.

Course format and assessment

In the first and second semester you study your selection of taught modules (half and full). These are in most cases assessed in the third semester (May/June) by written examination, or in some cases by the submission of an assessed essay.

The General Law programme at Aberdeen is one of the best programmes in terms of scope and areas of interest you can choose to study at advanced level. If your first degree was in a specific area of law there is nothing preventing you from choosing another area of law completely or a complementary area. You could study environmental law areas such as oil and gas law, energy and environmental law, low carbon energy transition with further environmental regulation. If you are more interested in criminal law you could look at Criminology, the politics of human rights, humanitarian law.  If you are more interested in business you might choose international law, intellectual property law, world trade organisation or for business with a creative aspect you might think about specialist in cultural property issues or law for business and arts and museums law.  There are many possible mixes of these general areas of law you might want to explore. Employment possibilities are huge from this range of areas of law and include all notable areas to practise law and careers within the legal profession to welfare sectors such as employment, business, HR and finance.

Law careers

You may become a Barrister if you wish to represent people at High Court and Magistrates court to put legal argument forward for decision. You could start off as a legal executive to later qualify as a solicitor with further training or after a number of years experience you may wish to become a judge. If you want some work experience you could become a court usher. Other careers include a Paralegal. This role undertakes much of a lawyers role in drafting documents, meetings and contracts.  If you decide your law degree is useful for other areas you may look at Civil Service careers, become a politician, work in the police, city, or teach.

This programme is ideal if you want to be a generalist to an advanced level rather than a specialist in a specific area of law. Who is it for?

The International Politics MA programme is for students who want to explore international politics more widely and then drill down to follow their unique interests and specialise their knowledge. The MA is designed to give you the chance to pursue your own questions about the way the world works – and to shape arguments where you feel it doesn’t.

Objectives

This is a course where you will challenge your own point of view. We probe the ideas that structure the way we think about the world and examine the institutions that determine events. We then focus on how you can use this new understanding to judge global affairs for yourself.

International Politics is an expansive and ever-changing subject so you learn about the broad contours of the field while developing specialisms backed by real-world research. The department’s academics are actively shaping policy, sitting on the advisory board for the Corbyn shadow cabinet, hosting talks on the human right to housing in London, and engaging in study groups around the Obama presidency. This keeps the content of the course effective and current, giving students a contemporary lens from which to view rapid political change.

These are some of the questions the course poses:
-Is the USA a benevolent global leader or a neo-imperial power?
-How does the shift in power from the West to the Rest reshape international politics in the 21st century?
-Can states act effectively in a world increasingly shaped by international institutions and global economic actors?

Placements

You may have the opportunity to undertake a placement, but it is not a formal requirement of the course. We encourage students to create their own, by fostering connections offered by the Careers Service. There is also the International Politics Careers Day, which explores career opportunities with international politics degrees and includes:
-Talks by speakers within the field (including alumni now working within the UK Department for International Development, the UK Ministry of Justice), UNESCO and the EU Commission.
-Talks by careers consultants and volunteering coordinators.
-Drop-in sessions with careers professionals focusing on CV writing, applications and volunteering.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by academics within the department with industry professionals offering insight in the form of talks for the Practitioner Series. This is a programme of talks from visiting speakers and alumni working within organisations such as The Refugee Council and Amnesty International.

Assessment

Each taught module is assessed by an essay, either a 5,000-word essay for 30 credit modules or a 3,000-word essay for 15 credit modules. Your final MA marks are derived from a combination of your essay and dissertation grades.

You are required to submit a dissertation of 15,000 words in an area linked to the MA degree. Your dissertation topic will be agreed with your personal tutor/supervisor.

Your work will be assessed by coursework alone, there are no exams. Many students develop their key interest first when they choose their elective modules, then when they write their essays, and finally when they write their dissertation over the summer term.

Throughout the year you can choose elective modules that suit your interests.
