Over five days the course will provide you with a basic knowledge of:

This is a professionally focused applied degree and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern measurement equipment and techniques. The modules are directly relevant to the practice of acoustics, and also consider the broader aspects of investigation and control of the built environment. Half of teaching time is spent in the laboratory, and this focus is reflected in the balance between coursework and exams.

Individual modules can be taken separately as part of continuing professional development. For the final project module you'll devise and complete a piece of investigative work in an area of interest in considerable depth; the topic and scope of the project are selected with the guidance of an academic supervisor. - Acoustics laboratory
This module aims to convey the nature of sound and vibration with a considerable depth of knowledge through practical means, giving you an understanding of how to accurately measure sound, how sound behaves, and practical aspects of noise control. It introduces you to the basic principles of acoustics, familiarises you with modern sound level meters, measurement parameters and measurement techniques for noise surveys, room acoustics, sound absorption and sound insulation. You should be able to produce an accurate report to consultancy level which is critical of the laboratory, experiment, technique or instrumentation by comparison to the appropriate international standard.

- Architectural acoustics
The module provides specific acoustics knowledge as relevant to buildings and in particular rooms. The aims of the module are to gain understanding of room acoustics, measurement of room acoustic parameters and the various means of modelling the sound field in rooms across the frequency range.

- Measurement and control of sound
This module is designed to teach, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which noise may be created, as well as to provide the analytic and practical skills required to control noise and vibration from a variety of sources. The module instils the knowledge of how to undertake noise and vibration measurements to meet specific acoustical standards and guidance.

- Subjective and environmental acoustics
Teaches, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which the ear/brain interact to hear. The aims of the module are to: appreciate how human hearing deteriorates dependent on a number of variables; how legislation has developed to protect workers and how hearing protection can help under certain conditions; to appreciate the difference between subjective loudness and objective measurements; to learn how acoustic comfort criteria and legislation have been developed and applied to protect people in different environments.

- Environmental management
The module develops understanding of the way that human social and economic activities impact on the environment. The emphasis is on how managers can assess and influence the environmental impact of their particular organisation, with reference to key technologies and the political and legal constraints within which organisations must operate.

- Research methods
This module focuses on the essential communication and analytic skills required in research, including techniques for successful dissertation writing.

Over the past decade a very high proportion our students have found employment in an acoustics related industry, and one or two outstanding students per year go on to undertake research on our sponsored PhD programme.

Completion of the MSc satisfies the academic requirement for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. The process of attaining Chartered Engineer status is offered through the Institute o fAcoustics or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

- Architectural acoustics:
Many types of new buildings need careful acoustic design to make them sound good, to protect them from nearby noise sources, to make them productive and pleasant places to live or work in and to make them commercially successful. This is especially true for places like concert halls, but equally applicable to universities, residential buildings, leisure centres and many others. Day-to-day tasks could include: design meetings with architects and other engineers, noise surveys of existing and new sites, design using computer and physical models, communication of the design to the client and design team, project management, site supervision and commissioning of the finished projects. - Environmental noise:
Noise is a major issue for society: 80 million EU citizens live in unacceptably noisy areas. Environmental health officers consider noise in planning new developments, such as housing affected by noise, or new noisy activities, and enforcement of existing noise concerns including the sources of complaints from the public. Consultants in environmental noise work in small specialists firms or large multinational consultancies, including engineering firms. Junior staff measure noise and use computer models to predict noise levels from new developments such as roads, railways and industrial plants. This module introduces the theory behind digital signal processing and how DSP can be implemented in real-time. You will gain an understanding of how to program hardware to perform fundamental DSP algorithms such as filtering and spectral analysis. You will gain a fundamental understanding of DSP algorithms and how to implement them in hardware for real-time applications.

- Pattern recognition and machine learning
This module introduces the fundamentals of both statistical learning theory and practical approaches for solving pattern recognition problems. Further, it consolidates lectures with experimental computer-based assignments to inculcate the basics of machine learning and classification. The module covers the fundamentals of pattern recognition and provides the essential background to machine learning and classification.

- Advanced instrumentation and control
This module develops advanced techniques in data acquisition and manipulation required for instrumentation and control applications. Further, it consolidates lectures with experimental computer-based assignments using industry standard hardware and software (NI DAQ and LabView). The module develops your knowledge and experience in data acquisition and virtual instrumentation used in Industry for control purposes.

- Advanced power electronics and renewable energy systems
The material in this module is divided into two parts. The first part covers the analysis and operation of power electronics and machines and their application in the areas of power conversion, power conditioners and electrical machine drives mostly, found on the 'load' side of the electrical power system but sometimes integrated into the supply network. This part will also include elements of computer control systems that are designed to produce non-sinusoidal waveforms and methods of dealing with undesirable harmonics and their effects on the power network. The second part of the module will focus on renewable energy and sustainability. This will include: solar cells, biomass, wind and wave power; intelligent environmental sensing and feedback (in areas of pollution, petroleum, energy consumption, etc.); and renewable design and effectiveness (solar, wind and wave).

- Technology evaluation and commercialization
In this module you will follow a prescribed algorithm in order to evaluate the business opportunity that can be created from a technology's unique advantages. You will be guided towards identifying a technology project idea that you will evaluate for its business potential. To do this you will conduct detailed research and analysis following a prescribed algorithmic model, in order to evaluate the business potential of this technology idea. The outcomes from this will serve as the basis for implementation of the selected technology in the business sense. Thus you will develop the appropriate commercialisation strategy and write the business plan for their high-tech start-up company.

- Technical, research and professional skills
This module provides training for the skills that are necessary for successful completion of the MSc studies in the near future and for professional development in the long-term future. More specifically, the module teaches how to search and gather relevant technical information, how to extract the essence from a piece of technical literature, how to carry out a critical review of a research paper, how to write a feasibility report, how to give presentations and put your thoughts across effectively, and how to manage a project in terms of time and progress in a group project environment. These are designed to enhance the technical and analytical background that is necessary for the respective MSc stream.

- MSc engineering project
This module requires you to undertake a major project in an area that is relevant to their MSc course. You will chose your project and carry it out under the guidance of your supervisor. At the end of the project, you are required to present a dissertation, which forms a major element of the assessment. The dissertation tests your ability to integrate information from various sources, to conduct an in-depth investigation, to critically analyse results and information obtained and to propose solutions. The other element of the assessment includes an oral presentation. The Individual Project carries 60 credits and is a major part of MSc program.

The acquired skills in computer control and AI techniques offer additional scope for jobs in the design of decision support systems that cross traditional boundaries between engineering and other disciplines. Marketing executives help develop marketing campaigns to promote a product, service or idea. The work can be exceptionally varied – from sourcing and placing adverts, to producing marketing materials such as leaflets and e-newsletters, to organising events. Excellent writing and confident presentation skills are essential to work in marketing. Good people skills are also a must as networking is particularly important. So is having a creative and adaptive mind. A traditional career path leads from marketing executive to senior marketing executive, then to marketing manager, and finally to marketing director. However the marketing industry is very broad, with many companies in all different sectors requiring varying degrees of marketing expertise, so options for progression vary considerably. Salaries for marketing executives in the early stages of their careers generally range from £20,000-£30,000, while marketing professionals with a wealth of experience can earn up to £50,000. The sector - ranging from international hotel chains, airlines and tour operators to conference venues, tourist boards and government organisations - is one of the most diverse and exciting industries around, providing management opportunities worldwide in business operations, marketing, sales, customer service, HR, research, logistics and policy. Employment in this sector is set to grow over the next few years and the demand for senior and specialised roles will increase.

To excel in this industry you need to be a good leader, manager, entrepreneur and show awareness of the ethical, cultural, environmental and social settings within which you are working.

This Masters degree helps prepare you for this. We encourage an entrepreneurial and questioning approach to the industry, examining growth and development through the prism of social responsibility and sustainability. - Field trip
Postgraduate students enrolled in the MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management join a residential five day trip Semester 2. For the last three years we have been to Belfast where we study the processes of city marketing. On your return we analyse the issues that the city faces in becoming a competitive destination and you write a City Marketing plan for Belfast.

International Tourism and Hospitality Management Top-up

If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Year 1:
- Critical issues in tourism and hospitality industry
The module explores and analyses current policy issues in the tourism and hospitality sector as well as how these are interpreted by various stakeholders, how these stakeholders develop their policy preferences on these issues and how they deal with opposition and collaborations to further their goals.
The module will relate mostly to policy-making theory, but will also investigate the often chaotic and complex nature of the tourism and hospitality sector and what impacts this has on trying to set out a clear and unambiguous policy arena within which the industry and resources it depends upon can flourish.

- City marketing
Cities, be they historic, seaside, regional or capital, are the power houses of the tourism and hospitality industry. They shape and are shaped by tourism and hospitality which has become a major economic driver and re-imaging agent of city governance agencies as they seek to re-invent their themselves in the new global order. This module seeks to explain the role of tourism and hospitality and the visitor economy in the modern city and to critically analyse this in relation to a number of theoretical perspectives. The module will equip you with a critical understanding of broader perspectives required to manage and market tourism in the modern city and inform city marketing strategies.

- Cross-cultural management
This module examines concepts of culture and its multifaceted impacts on managerial behaviour in the tourism and hospitality industry. It reviews situations and issues that managers have to meet and resolve when working internationally. This module brings together knowledge, understanding, different interpretations and critical analysis of the contexts and issues relating to cross-cultural management.

- Business and management strategy
The module integrates the learning of management and enterprise theory with the practical processes of developing a business idea to the point of the completion of a business plan aimed to attract the financial backing.The module will cover theories of corporate strategy and strategic choice, human resource development, enterprise and business planning.

- Marketing strategy
Marketing is dynamic, pervasive and exciting. It steers innovation, strategy, revenue generation and profitability and, ultimately, drives economic development and corporate performance. This module, using theory and practice, explores how organisations in both the public and private sector address the key marketing challenges posed by an increasingly competitive environment. It looks at how they develop tactical and strategic responses, research and reach audiences, mount campaigns, create global brands, manage reputation and the importance of working in partnerships and networks to do this.

- Professional leadership
The module focuses on the active, professional aspects of leadership studies and starts from the assumption that all successful organised activity is initiated by leadership of some sort. Alongside engaging with contemporary theoretical perspectives, students will be encouraged to learn from their own and others experiences of leadership in practice, and to engage in classroom activities which enable them to develop their own leadership aptitude.

Choose from the following options:

- Dissertation
The relevance of the final year project is to give you the opportunity to undertake a piece of primary research and analysis and to enable them to manage your own learning under the guidance of a tutor. You'll choose your own topic, which should show originality and should offer a worthwhile contribution to the existing 'body of knowledge'. The module is double weighted and will be supported by a taught research methods programme that will incorporate the elements crucial for the completion of an in depth research project.

- Extended management report
Part-time = two modules a year for three years then dissertation in Year 4; or four modules in Year 1 then two modules plus the dissertation in Year 2, with dissertation extending into Year 3.

Tourism is an international service industry and so you can probably expect a busy, fast-paced job wherever you decide to specialise, interacting with different people and organisations around the globe.

Our LSBU post graduates work around the world. Many work for international companies, tourist boards, policy and development institutes, acquiring senior management skills as they progress.

The nature of the industry - the large majority of organisations in the sector are small to medium enterprises (SMEs) - also provides opportunities for you to start your own business. Web-based tour operations, restaurants and events management companies are all popular options for start-ups. You certainly have choices over the route you take into this vast sector.

- Career progression
There is a worldwide shortage of well qualified tourism and hospitality managers, particularly in Asia, and this professional Masters qualification will help you to progress your career. If you are academically minded this could also be a positive step towards a PhD and academic career.

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

Academic expertise

Department staff are experts in their respective fields of urban, environment, tourism, heritage and leisure and related educational policy. Many have professional affiliations, appointed positions and research links, for example with the Association for Tourism in Higher Education, Local Economy, The Landscape Research Group, The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Tourism Society. We integrate these links into our teaching wherever possible.

Tools and knowledge

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments.
