This LLM course covers the concepts and enforcement of international criminal law, It focuses on international crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of international criminal courts and tribunals (genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression). The core principles, law, and institutions of international criminal law are contextualised against international law and human rights, and international humanitarian law.

You'll study the following subset categories of International Law:International Criminal Law, International Human Rights Law and Humanitarian Law by exploring the contours of the duty to prosecute those who commit international crimes. And, focus on the application of domestic and international law to the question of jurisdiction over international criminal activities, including universal jurisdiction of national courts.

The course explores the procedural aspects of international cooperation in criminal matters, with particular attention to extradition and problems associated with obtaining evidence from abroad.

Assessment

Content, knowledge and understanding is assessed through coursework, or coursework, presentations and on-line assessments.

Assessment methods reflect the development of legal skills within particular modules, for example the advocacy presentation within the Advocacy Module and the Case study within the Case Management Module. Oral assessments assess your ability to effectively and critically research, evaluate, write and present a coherent legal analysis of a particular issue drawing upon relevant law reform proposals, assessing conflicting interpretations of the International Criminal Law and proposing new hypotheses relevant to the topic being assessed.

Coursework

Coursework can take many forms (based on the practical or theoretical content of the module) including essays and reports. Typically coursework pieces will be 6,000 words in length. Students will explore a topic covered in depth, providing a critical, practical, insight into the topic analysed.

New international criminal law:

This programme is particularly relevant if you're looking for careers in the new international criminal law institutions such as the International Criminal Court or in agencies with rapidly increasing criminal justice competencies such as the UN or the EU.

You'll acquire in-depth knowledge of international criminal law and procedure, international human rights law and international humanitarian law. You'll have the necessary knowledge and skills to practice international criminal law before international tribunals or national courts.

This LLM will appeal to you if you're interested in the increasing trend in international human rights law to criminalize and prosecute mass human rights atrocities, both in domestic courts and international tribunals, like the International Criminal Court.

Non-governmental organisations:

Other graduates may embark on careers in non-governmental organisations, such as Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch, or in the area of international legal practice. The teaching is delivered by industry professionals and it emphasises professional collaborative workflows and the roles of all personnel in the Editing Department in the context of digital film production. Subjects covered include: working with digital cinema camera recording formats (e.g. Arri’s Log C format), colour grading, audio post production and delivery platforms.

The course offers deep exposure to the skills, knowledge and creativity required to get a secure foothold in the competitive world of Editing and Post Production (EPP). Individual and group tutorials support our students on every module and we use Moodle as our Virtual learning Environment (VLE).

Students can work on projects with VFX in the Division of Creative Technologies and SFX in the School of Engineering.

Placements

Gaining work experience through work placements and internships is important and we have strong links with industry. The course provides opportunities to engage in collaboration with industry partners. Students have recently completed placements at Scoop Films, TRAAC Films, ITV and more.

This MSc Environmental and Architectural Acoustics can be used as a conversion course for maths, physics, architecture, engineering or audio technology graduates. It's also suitable for professionals from fields such as music production and technology, engineering, environmental health, and many others.

LSBU has been offering courses in Acoustics for over 35 years, and houses the only centre for study with this level of facilities in the South-East of England,including full-size reverberant and anechoic chambers and an exceptionally well equipped and staffed laboratory, with access to the very latest instrumentation and technology.
This is a professionally focused applied degree and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern measurement equipment and techniques. The modules are directly relevant to the practice of acoustics, and also consider the broader aspects of investigation and control of the built environment. Half of teaching time is spent in the laboratory, and this focus is reflected in the balance between coursework and exams.

Individual modules can be taken separately as part of continuing professional development. For the final project module you'll devise and complete a piece of investigative work in an area of interest in considerable depth; the topic and scope of the project are selected with the guidance of an academic supervisor. For those applicants who already hold an Institute of Acoustics Diploma, there is an option of direct entry to the second year of the part-time Masters course.

Employability

Over the past decade a very high proportion our students have found employment in an acoustics related industry, and one or two outstanding students per year go on to undertake research on our sponsored PhD programme.

Completion of the MSc satisfies the academic requirement for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. The process of attaining Chartered Engineer status is offered through the Institute o fAcoustics or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Acousticians work in a great variety of industries and environments and this profession is in high demand, especially in London, thanks to the wide range and speed of new infrastructure development.

Architectural acoustics:

Many types of new buildings need careful acoustic design to make them sound good, to protect them from nearby noise sources, to make them productive and pleasant places to live or work in and to make them commercially successful. This is especially true for places like concert halls, but equally applicable to universities, residential buildings, leisure centres and many others. Day-to-day tasks could include: design meetings with architects and other engineers, noise surveys of existing and new sites, design using computer and physical models, communication of the design to the client and design team, project management, site supervision and commissioning of the finished projects. Environmental noise:

Noise is a major issue for society: 80 million EU citizens live in unacceptably noisy areas. Environmental health officers consider noise in planning new developments, such as housing affected by noise, or new noisy activities, and enforcement of existing noise concerns including the sources of complaints from the public. Consultants in environmental noise work in small specialists firms or large multinational consultancies, including engineering firms. Junior staff measure noise and use computer models to predict noise levels from new developments such as roads, railways and industrial plants. You'll study two taught modules and complete a dissertation. There is no placement option on the fast track route.

Placements

In addition to academic rigour, the Masters is highly oriented to support your professional development.

An optional placement in a relevant business area is available in the third semester of the full-time route. This will enhance your employability skills and apply accounting and finance theory to contemporary business practices.

If you take part in a placement, the dissertation may be linked to your placement experience. A placement is not currently offered on the part-time or fast track mode.

Teaching and learning

Participation and active learning is encouraged through workshops, seminars, case studies and student led discussion. This five-day course seeks to provide delegates with a basic knowledge of the methodology of environmental noise measurement, including the use and accuracy requirements of sound level meters and analysers and to enable them be aware of the significance of measurement data against the framework of standards and legislation for environmental noise.

LSBU has been offering courses in Acoustics for over 35 years, and houses the only centre for study with this level of facilities in the South-East of England, including full-size reverberant and anechoic chambers and an exceptionally well equipped and staffed laboratory, with access to the very latest instrumentation and technology.

The teaching team is mostly comprised by senior lecturers of the IOA courses and university postgraduate degrees in Acoustics, and you'll have access to our extensive on-site and electronic library and Learning Resource Centre to support your learning.

Students on this course will normally be in employment, but the course offers an opportunity to gain specialist knowledge that could help you stand out from your peers and provide you with skills that you can start using straight away in your day-to-day work.

Measurement of environmental noise is an increasingly important job for planning and regulating noise in a variety of areas, particularly in London, thanks to the wide range and speed of new infrastructure development.

LSBU offers both the IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control and MSc Environmental and Architectural Acoustics for those students wishing to pursue further study.

PgCert/PgDip/MA Housing Studies is a professionally-oriented course that will extend your professional knowledge and ability to perform at a senior level in the housing and housing-related professions.
Good quality housing is one of the most basic necessities in producing thriving communities and ensuring the health and wellbeing of individuals, so the job market around housing provides plenty of opportunities to graduates.

The learning style is designed to provide support through lectures, workshops and speakers from practice, as well as directed reading and regular progress meetings between students and tutors. All modules are assessed by coursework rather than exams.

You'll study different housing systems and visit a European country to investigate its housing practices - currently students visit Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The course is professionally accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Fast track to professional qualification

For those with substantial relevant experience it is possible to gain the PgCert qualification in just two semesters (Sep-June) on a part-time day release timetable. It is designed to appeal those who are unsure of their ability to enrol for a full Masters, but progression after completion is encouraged.

The Masters element requires the submission of a 20,000 word dissertation in the third year.

Modules

The first year concentrates on housing policy and the changing role of the housing professional. You'll examine housing and planning issues, and running the social business.

In the second year you'll explore housing economics and finance; housing law; and the interrelationship of housing and health. During the second year students you'll complete a comparative study of the UK and Dutch housing systems on a European study visit to the Netherlands.

Year 3

Award

The PgCert award requires completion of 60 credits, which you'll complete in the first year. For PgDip, an additional 60 credits are required in the second year. For full MA award, you'll complete the dissertation during your third year, achieving 180 credits.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a range of coursework, design and practice based projects, presentations and a dissertation. There are no exams on this programme.

Teaching and learning

All students take part in a field trip in the second year to the Netherlands to help relate theory to practice. You'll visit Dutch housing organisations and local government, and on your return develop a comparative case study for the assessment.

Teaching is delivered through seminars, lectures and workshops. The course makes full of our blended learning platform, Moodle. Online tutorials will be made available, allowing you to enhance your skills in self-managing your studies. This supports the more traditional teaching methods.

Teaching is supplemented by site visits and speakers from professional practice.

The full Masters course is accredited as fulfilling the academic requirements for the Chartered Institute of Housing professional qualification. Our students can register as student members and go on to become full members after completion of the Institutes' professional experience requirements. Students applying for full membership of the CIH must have work experience in a housing related field. This is included in the course fees.

Employability

As well as being a postgraduate course of study it is also a professional qualification accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing for those looking to further their career in both public and private sector housing organisations.
