Our MA programme provides a series of connected learning experiences, which are delivered through four modules. The Jewellery pathway within the Programme enables you to develop the skills, critical understanding and specialist knowledge required to follow a rewarding career as an independent Jewellery designer, develop your own business or to work within a related creative sector.
This pathway provides a tailored learning environment that encourages and supports your creative development, independence in creativity, imagination and ideas. This pathway will support your development of new interdisciplinary practices, conceptual skills and a broader understanding of the debates informing Art & Design practices. The course is suitable if you have an undergraduate honours degree in Design: Jewellery, 3D Design, Product Design or related disciplines, or if you want to develop your career and specialist academic knowledge in this discipline based on prior professional experience.
The programme provides a series of connected learning experiences (3+1 modules), which critically challenge you to develop and reflect on your specialist disciplinary practice.
You will be supported in identifying and acquiring the most appropriate research and practice based strategies for the development of your Jewellery creative practice.
Critical Contextual Studies and Research Methods
You will be introduced to a key set of research methods and thematic issues integral to the programme. These are delivered through a set of discursive lectures and seminars, resulting in a reflect essay exploring your contextual, societal or theoretical outlook related to Jewellery.
Personal Development and Professional Networks
You will reflect, evidence, evaluate and present your work across a range of outputs; exhibition, online journal and collaborative networks.
The culmination of the 3 previous modules provides a critical platform for a self-directed major piece of practice-based research. You will also be required to produce an extended piece of analytical and critical writing in support of your practice-based work.
You will work in a tailored, dynamic, creative environment which encourages independent thinking and original ideas.
The main teaching strategies for this practice-based course are delivered through structured seminars and critiques, workshops and individual one-to-one tutorial support. Although a practice-based programme, the MA places great emphasis on contemporary critical and visual cultural debates and appropriate research practices. You will work as an individual but also will take part in group activities, presentations and discussions.
You will have opportunities to engage and learn from invited artists, designers, experienced researchers and speakers from industry through our [email protected]’s lecture programme.
The pathway emphasises directed independent learning, negotiated independent project work and individually focused research. Jewellery & Metal (J&M) forms part of the School of Material. Within this context we are committed to exploring the rich and diverse field of adornment and object culture. We encourage an open-minded approach that in principle embraces all materials. But it is metal that constitutes the technological core of our subject and we believe that a deepening understanding of the metal elements is key in these developments; the Periodic Table is our reference in expanding our activity within the subjects of jewellery and metalwork.

MA and MFA students complete the same modules during the course except that MFA students complete an extra project module. The MFA project encourages you to develop professional skills that help you to identify, instigate, and deliver projects with external partners, such as communities, galleries or businesses. You find a project partner, agree a brief and then deliver the project to a professional standard.

The teaching method is based upon lessons, case analyses, company visits and presentations, group and individual work sessions, out-of class assignments and finalized by a Project Work with a practical approach to a managerial issue pertaining to the luxury industry. To complete the perspective on the luxury environment EMLUX activities include visits such as Baglietto (yachts), Damiani (jewellery), Van Cleef&Arpels (jewellery), Atelier Pino Grasso (fashion), Excelsior (concept store), etc.
In addition, true to its international vocation, EMLUX has developed a session in Paris, France, with a focus on French luxury that during the past edition was in collaboration with the University of Sciences-Po. Over the last five years, students on this course have benefitted from developing projects to a live brief in their Marketing and Innovation modules.
Students are briefed by a brand owner or founder and they develop original research for them, which has in some cases resulted in work placements and prizes for the best students.
Brands involved have ranged from sportswear to children’s wear and accessories as well as men’s and women’s apparel.
Student involvement in these live projects provides an extra dimension and insight for them to realise the challenges and opportunities of owning a fashion brand. How to maximise this and turn their ideas into realistic strategies and a potentially successful direction for a brand.
The idea of a Fashion Business Management MA was formulated in discussion with industry leaders. Building on the success of our Fashion Merchandise Management courses and in particular the close collaboration with industry we spoke extensively to senior fashion executives. Many felt that although doing an MA in Fashion Business Management would not ensure promotion, potential candidates who learn how to apply the knowledge they gain from the course can become leaders who can inspire others. Those candidates need to understand the values and culture of the industry and, most importantly, recognise the difference between information and knowledge and have clearly defined goals.
