Programme Description

This accredited programme enables graduates of any discipline the opportunity to obtain an occupational therapy degree at Masters level.

It is approved by The Health and Care Professions Council and is accredited by the College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Internationally recognised, the programme explores both the theoretical and practical contexts of occupational therapy in today’s society.

Occupational Therapists are skilled professionals who help people of all ages to carry out activities they need or want to do, but as a result of physical or mental illness, disability or ageing, they are prevented from doing. They are employed within hospital and a wide variety of community settings, often working as part of a health and/or social care team.

The programme is considered a broadening MSc as the subject matter is different to that of your first degree, but will be more demanding and require an increased level of self-directed study.

Learning and Teaching

The programme uses a variety of learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, practical classes and practice education placements which explore the theoretical and practice contexts of occupational therapy in today’s society.

Reflecting the inter-professional nature of working practice, some modules are delivered with physiotherapy, dietetic and/or social work students, offering opportunities to broaden your experience and explore common aspects of care provision.

Clinical Placement

You will work alongside a practice educator, a registered occupational therapist, or another health and social care provider. Minimum of 1000 hours of assessed placement experience.

Three/four practice placements during the two-year programme will offer diverse learning opportunities including one placement in a role emergent setting.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is viewed as an integral part of the total learning experience, therefore the assessment strategy is linked to the learning outcomes for individual modules - for example, verbal presentations, poster presentations, written assignments, case studies, reflective reports, portfolio development, research proposal, practice education and dissertation.

Teaching Methods

Independent learning is critical to the programme and teaching methods, which include key lectures, group working, tutorials and seminars. A variety of methods are employed, including university-based study, practice education placements and work-based learning which explore the theoretical and practical contexts of occupational therapy in today's society.

Employment Opportunities

On successful completion of the programme graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (the UK regulatory body) as an Occupational Therapist.

Graduates can obtain employment in a diverse range of areas, having the opportunity to work with disadvantaged and marginalised groups within hospital and community settings, charitable organisations and private practice.

It is divided into two phases: Fundamental and Customized. In the 8-month Fundamental Phase, you will acquire the core business skills that are crucial in carving out a successful business career. During the 8-month Customized Phase, you will tailor the MBA program to your personal aspirations and professional objectives by selecting from a wide range of options including elective courses, specializations, international exchanges or fieldwork projects.

Two Intakes

All of our MBA students experience the exact same core curriculum, regardless of intake. During the Customized Phase, students of both intakes have the opportunity to merge together into one class, creating a sense of teamwork in a collaborative community.

BUILT-IN FLEXIBILITY

Students in the January intake can finish all coursework in 12 months. By choosing a fieldwork project in the 4th term, you can put into practice your classroom taught knowledge and quickly transition back into a professional environment.

FUNDAMENTAL PHASE

Core courses 1:

Core 1 has been designed to help you build the foundations for an in-depth understanding of business, with theoretically-strong subjects such as Business Economics and Financial Markets. Teaching methods vary from lectures to simulations and business games (Negosim Business Simulation, Bach Business Game).

Core courses 2:

The courses of Core 2 cover advanced business topics, such as Corporate Finance and Strategic Management, expanding upon the fundamental knowledge you will have learned in Core 1.

Languages:

For those students who are not fluent in French upon arrival, French courses are obligatory during the first 2 terms of the Fundamental Phase. Students who are fluent in both French and English only must study a third language for the first 2 terms. Trilingual candidates may choose to study a fourth language if they wish.

NB. Language classes are organized based on student demand, and so a minimum of 12 students with roughly the same level of knowledge is needed to open a course.

Leadership Development:

Leadership is a transformative process enhanced through hands-on, practical experience and experiential learning initiatives. Seminars and student-run events are at the very heart of your curriculum.

Career Building & Coaching:

The Career Management Center is here to provide support and services that fall in line with your personal goals and professional aspirations. This includes many corporate outreach events and access to companies via on-campus fairs, corporate presentations and "roundtables" with influential leaders from various sectors.

CUSTOMIZED PHASE

Electives:

You can choose from a range of electives, allowing you to tailor your MBA to fit your professional aspirations. Some electives are offered in French.

Fieldwork project:

Fieldwork projects are all about learning through doing. These experiential learning projects are done in partnership with a paying client or company. The project must be closely linked with your future career plan and professional goals. This project can be a foot in the door in a new country, sector or industry, or can simply be a way of gaining further understanding of a sector which you already have some experience.

All projects are advised by an HEC faculty member and last a minimum of 3 months.

International Exchanges:

We offer international exchanges with more than 40 partner universities worldwide. This is a rather selective process and we send around forty students per year on international exchanges.

Specializations:

During the second half of the program you can tailor the MBA program to suit your career goals and interests by choosing from one of five specializations available.

Career Building & Coaching:

During the customized phase of the MBA program you will benefit from a personalized approach to career building, including information sessions, job search training, bootcamps and workshops.

The Research Degree Programme includes an induction period, research skills training, seminars, and a requirement to present your research work on a regular basis. You will have one-to-one meetings with two allocated Research Supervisors.

The options in creative practice are suitable for those whose main focus is in composition, choreography, performance, or any related activity which embodies practical components, including those whose research incorporates interdisciplinary collaborations. In addition, historical research projects that utilise archive resources at Trinity Laban are also admissible under this option.

The options in science and pedagogy are available for those specialising in empirical approaches to topics in music and/or dance research and those who wish to concentrate on educational and pedagogical aspects.

Under normal circumstances, research degree candidates initially register for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme, allowing them time to develop their research methodology and refine their topic. The projects will be assessed at a midway stage, at which time transfers to the PhD programme may be considered.

Registration can be either in full-time or part-time mode, and there are two intakes for the Research Degree Programme in each academic year: January and September. We also offer options for suitably experienced Staff Candidates to pursue doctoral study, and in appropriate cases, submission by prior publication is possible.

All candidates are required to submit a detailed research proposal, which outlines the area(s) of study and a description of how these correlate with existing areas of scholarship, both theoretical and practical. You will also be asked to state how the proposed research project is represented in terms of the research interests of Trinity Laban, and, if necessary, how the resources of the institution will be utilised.

There are two deadlines for submission of applications. They are 1 June for the September intake; and 1 October for the January intake.

Your application will consist of (up to) six elements: (1) an outline research proposal, (2) a summary CV, (3) certified copies of all degree certificates, (4) a copy of English Language certification (if required), (5) for proposals engaging in practical elements, a portfolio of your creative practice, and (6) the Trinity Laban RDP application form.

Overview

This is an advanced course for students who want to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the biology, welfare and conservation of domesticated and wild animals managed for production or leisure.

Course Modules

The MSc programme is delivered over 1 year on a full-time basis during two teaching blocks (semesters one and two) and a period of supervised and independent study (summer). It may also be completed over a two-year period on a part-time basis. The first two semesters (15 weeks each) include 4 taught modules. The dissertation is studied during the subsequent 20 week period in the summer. Each taught module is worth 15 credits whilst the dissertation is 60 credits.

The full MSc degree course consists of 120 compulsory taught credits plus 60 core credits from the dissertation. The Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) can be awarded with 120 taught credits. Whilst a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) can be awarded on the successful completion of any 60 taught credits. Credits obtained from the dissertation can also be used when considering whether a postgraduate diploma can be awarded. Before progressing onto the Masters dissertation from the Diploma, students would need to complete the Research Methods module or its equivalent as a prerequisite.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally hold a good BSc Honours degree (2.2 or above) from a recognised university in a related science subject such as animal science, agriculture, biological sciences, zoology, veterinary or bioveterinary science or other appropriate life-science degree. Applicants with a BSc (Hons) 3rd class pass, with extensive industrial experience may also be considered for the Masters programme. Applications from non-UK students are particularly welcome. All applications received will be reviewed and decisions for admission to the programme will be made on individual merit. Applicants may be interviewed if there is some doubt over the extent of academic qualification or linguistic skills.

Applicants for whom English is a second language are required to demonstrate a level of competence that enables them to study at a postgraduate level. A test score of 6.5 is required in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests.

Learning & Teaching Methods

The teaching methods are a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, visits and student managed learning. The self-guided study takes place under the supervision of experienced staff from the Centre of Equine and Animal Science at Writtle University College. Students are assessed using a number of methods, for example written examination, reports, essays, seminars, debates, oral presentations, case studies and project dissertation.

The research project is an essential part of the MSc programme and provides the opportunity to carry out an independent piece research, critically analyse data and write a dissertation. The project will normally include hands-on practical experimentation to teach students how to gather and process data and problem solve. The project is supervised by an academic member of staff and takes place over an extended period during the spring and summer. The project can be based either at Writtle University College or other suitable external institution.

Careers

Graduates are likely to use their award to secure management-level jobs and/or to improve their promotion prospects if they are already employed both in international and national organisations. Many opportunities exist in either government services or related agencies services: for example senior positions in DEFRA as quarantine officers or animal health inspectors. There are also numerous career opportunities in companies specialising in farm animal nutrition and pet food manufacturing, breeding and reproduction, veterinary medicines and pharmaceuticals. There also opportunities in charities engaged in animal welfare such as the RSPCA, zoos, animal rescue centres and safari parks. Also, independent wildlife agencies such as the RSPB, Scottish Natural Heritage, Natural England, and the Countryside Council for Wales would be interested in Animal Welfare and Conservation graduates. Some graduates may take up lecturing positions in universities and colleges or proceed to do further postgraduate study e.g. PhD.

Part-time student fees for each semester will be charged on a pro-rata basis. There are limited bursaries for part-payment of fees (for UK students only) from the Alice Noakes Memorial Trust. Applications for these bursaries can only be made via the course manager on admission to the course.

The programme is specifically designed for Medical and Dental practitioners who want to improve their teaching skills. The programme offers participants an opportunity to develop some practical teaching skills and acquire the knowledge to underpin their educational practice with Masters level study. The programme will offer you opportunities to review your teaching techniques and includes practical teaching projects. The assessments require you to engage at a high level.

Whilst you will follow a common menu of face-to-face modules, each module will allow you an opportunity to consider application and implementation to your own teaching practice. Course assignment all relate to your individual practise and work setting. In addition you are able to influence your learning by selecting from a range of contemporary issues that you feel suit your particular needs or interests.

The course team has experience in Medical and Healthcare Education. Teaching sessions are delivered by QUB staff in collaboration with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).

The programme is delivered on a part-time basis on up to five evening classes each semester from 6.30pm-9pm. This programme is delivered at Queen’s University Belfast and two intakes are offered each year, January and February. There are 5 exercise films and a graduation work in the MA Filmmaking programme, shot on film and digital. One film is prepared, shot, delivered and screened in every 12 weeks of your work. Students normally work on quite a few more depending on their time and specialty.

Students are taught by working UK filmmakers. Exercise films are made on built sets, shot on professional level film and digital cameras, recorded on Nagra V, edited on Avid Composer and given a professional dub in Soho.

Our 2-year postgraduate multi-discipline MA Filmmaking course requires that you have a 3-4 year degree which does not have to be media related, or a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience. This Sustainable and Efficient Food Production postgraduate course centres on increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact within the extensive pasture-based production sector. The programme provides flexible, accessible, postgraduate level training for people employed in the agri-food sector. Training comprises distance learning modules and work-based research projects. These are accessible as CPD or as credit-bearing units, which can be built towards a range of postgraduate qualifications.

Taught by experts at both Aberystwyth University (AU) and Bangor University (BU), the Sustainable and Efficient Food Production course offers you a highly vocational option. In the most recent joint submission to the Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014), the department was placed in the top 10 universities in the UK for research intensity and 78% of our research was world-leading or internationally excellent.

To achieve an MSc students must complete five optional modules (including up to three from BU) plus Research Methods and a Dissertation.

We have designed our training to be as accessible as possible, particularly for those in full time employment. Each topic comprises a 12-14 week distance learning module worth 20 credits which can be taken for your own continuing professional development or interest; or built towards a postgraduate qualification. The research elements of our qualifications are carried out in your work place with regular academic supervision. The training is web-based which means that as long as you have access to a reasonable broadband connection (i.e. are able to stream videos such as on YouTube), you can study where and when best suits you. Learning material includes podcast lectures, e-group projects, guided reading, interactive workbooks and discussion forums, as well as assignments and e-tutorials. By signing a re-registration form each year you will have access to e-journals and library resources for the full five years.

Assessment

There are no exams within this programme. Taught modules are assessed via course work and forum discussion.

This scheme aims to facilitate knowledge exchange between academia and industry. Students must complete three taught modules including research methods and a 120 credit work-based dissertation / research thesis (approximately 20,000 words in length).

While the primary academic focus is on the completion of an advanced piece of research, the collaborative route provided by a work-based research project provides an ideal opportunity to embed new knowledge in the work place and ensure that research is relevant to industry. As such, it is crucial that a student’s employer is supportive of both their research aims and the time commitment that the proposed research will involve. Self-employed students should aim to undertake research which will be closely aligned to their business.

Students may build on the MRes to work towards a Professional Doctorate.

An MRes can be completed in 2-5 years but we would expect most students to spend 1 year on their taught modules and 2 years on their work based dissertation. 12 or 14 weeks for one module by distance learning. Three intakes per year (January, May, September).

Students will be eligible for a UK Student loan if their course is completed within 3 years.

The MRes comprises three taught modules (including Research Methodologies and Advances in Bioscience) followed by a 120 credit work-based dissertation (20,000 words).

We have designed our training to be as accessible as possible, particularly for those in full time employment. Each taught module comprises a 12 or 14 week distance learning module worth 20 credits which can be taken for your own continuing professional development or interest; or built towards a postgraduate qualification. The research elements of our qualifications are carried out in your work place with regular academic supervision. The training is web-based which means that as long as you have access to a reasonable broadband connection (i.e. are able to stream videos such as on YouTube), you can study where and when best suits you. Learning material includes podcast lectures, e-group projects, guided reading, interactive workbooks and discussion forums, as well as assignments and e-tutorials. By signing a re-registration form each year you will have access to e-journals and library resources for the duration of your registration.

Assessment

There are no exams within this programme. Taught modules are assessed via course work and forum discussion. Research is monitored and assessed.

The program is divided into two phases: Fundamental and Customized. In the 12-month Fundamental Phase, you will acquire the core business skills that are crucial in carving out a successful business career. In the Customized Phase, which can be completed in 6-12 months, you will choose from a broad range of electives and carry out a consulting project, be it with your current company or a different one. You can even apply for a one-week exchange program with UCLA. You also have the option to join the Full-time cohort for one term and do a specialization or go on an international exchange.

Undertaking a Fieldwork projects is a key part of the Part-time MBA curriculum, with an emphasis on learning through doing. This project can be a foot in the door in a new country, sector or industry, or can simply be a way of gaining further understanding of the sector/company you are currently working in.

Format

The flexible nature of the course allows you to study with us full or part time. The course involves both extensive independent research and discussion in the context of workshops, designed to encourage the development of your critical, analytical and reflective skills. You will be expected to prepare for each workshop and to participate actively in discussion with your tutors and peers.

Assessment

Taught modules on the LLM Commercial Law course are assessed through a combination of written coursework assignments and oral presentations. The culmination of the course is a dissertation of up to 15,000 words, which constitutes an original contribution to the corpus of legal knowledge within an area of commercial law.

International Business Tour
MBA students have the opportunity to embark annually on a Business Tour to one of the main economic hubs in the world, where they learn about operations of multinational corporations. A recent visit included a weeklong trip to one of the leading BRIC economies: India. Students had a unique opportunity to meet with senior directors of companies such as Cadburys, McDonalds and Merrill Lynch – as well as a number of local social enterprises and SMEs.

Graduate Entrepreneur programme

Brunel University is pleased to announce that we have once again been awarded ten places on this year's Graduate Entrepreneur programme, plus an additional ten places just for Brunel MBA Graduates.

The overall aim of this well-established course is to provide a sound scientific, technical and commercial understanding of civil engineering issues and practice. You will be introduced to the broad nature of civil engineering through the integration of knowledge from structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering. The course will also provide training in engineering research methods and will develop a range of related transferable skills. The programme is presented in two stages:

In Stage 1 students follow taught modules to the value of 120 credits, with a limited amount of choice between optional modules.

Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles will be used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme. You will attend lectures and participate in examples classes. All students must complete 120 credits in Stage 1 in order to progress to the dissertation, for which they are allocated a supervisor from among the teaching staff. Dissertation topics are normally chosen from a range of project titles proposed by academic staff, usually in areas of current research interest, although students are encouraged to put forward their own project ideas.

Assessment

Achievement of learning outcomes in the majority of modules is assessed by a combination of coursework assignments, plus University examinations set in January or May. Examinations count for 60%–70% of assessment in Stage 1 of the programme, depending on the options chosen, the remainder being largely project work and pieces of coursework.

The award of an MSc requires successful completion of Stage 2, the dissertation, with a mark of 50% or higher. Candidates achieving a 70% average may be awarded a Distinction. Candidates achieving a 60% average may be awarded a Merit. Candidates failing to qualify for an MSc may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma for 120 credits in Stage 1. Candidates failing to complete the 120 credits required for Stage 1 may still be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate for the achievement of at least 60 credits.

Career prospects

This course's graduate employment record is excellent, with the majority of graduates joining engineering consultancies.
