Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Accreditation

 This course is dual accredited by CMI – a CMI accreditation means you have the option to graduate with your degree and gain a professional CMI qualification (Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership) and there’s no extra study involved. This accreditation is not only a hallmark of excellence, but also provides you with benefits. For example, student members can access online content, networking events, company visits, online seminars and mentoring.

A CMI Induction event will be held so you can find out about the CMI qualification and membership and choose whether you would like to qualify and join. If you do choose to gain the CMI qualification you will need to pay a non-refundable fee for the CMI level 7 qualification in Strategic Management & Leadership, which is currently £265 and includes one-year membership of the CMI.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are academic researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Specialist facilities

We have invested over £30m to create modern teaching and learning facilities and created a new home at Headington for the Business School.

Completed in 2017 it contains:

  • A new gateway into the Headington Campus.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. You will have the opportunity to visit various company sites organised through our extensive network of corporate contacts and the Chartered Management Institute. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for a 1 year paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. By gaining this professional experience you will be well prepared for your future career.

You will develop a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice, combined with a specialist perspective on brand management, including brand values and a wide range of related communication channels.

This course will prepare you to work for a branding or marketing agency or for a marketing, branding or communications department within an organisation. With practical case studies and live scenarios, you will apply brand management theory and analyse and critique what makes a successful brand. You will enhance your employment and future career prospects, through developing your knowledge of marketing and brand management theory and how it is applied in practice.

The Management English course prepares students for the IELTS test, and students can sit this test in Sheffield. Students wishing to enrol for a course of academic study in Sheffield (a Masters degree, for example) will be entered for the University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test, which is accepted as equivalent to the IELTS test by both Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University.

Commercial Visits
Visits to British businesses and organisations are arranged. The visits provide a chance to meet British business people in a work situation. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to extract relevant business information from these situations. Students broaden their general knowledge of western business practice and gain insights into their own special areas.

Length of Course

Field trips

An elective, non-credit module - International Business In Practice: Study Trip gives you hands-on experience of the ideas and practices of global business.

You will meet with leaders of global firms, receive presentations from global academic experts and tour company facilities. There is a particular focus on the economic system of the country being visited

You will develop a practical knowledge of the state and development of the economy; leading companies and industries; global participation; and social, cultural, and historical influences.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. Our library provides specialist business resources (both hard copy and via online access) to UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, a wide range of constantly updated key texts, and postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. You will have the opportunity to visit various company sites organised through our extensive network of corporate contacts and the Chartered Management Institute. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

Our MSc International Luxury Marketing course enables you to learn about planning and applying luxury marketing management strategies within a framework of international marketing. You will approach luxury marketing and its business challenges from a very international perspective.

The course integrates academic and practical knowledge with practical case studies and live scenarios and you learn to assess situations from financial, commercial and cultural standpoints, to reach decisions on solutions and actions. If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for a 1 year paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. With specialist modules in luxury businesses you develop marketing strategies in a luxury context and develop and understand how building customer trust and champion luxury brands is critical. You will gain the insights and critical skills to make decisions about the operational and strategic business activities of luxury brands and their distribution channels in a range of international business environments.

Graduates will be well placed to be employed in marketing roles throughout the world in luxury sectors such as jewellery, fashion, tourism, fine wine, spirits and prestige cars. These positions are not confined to in-house marketing management, but also can be in media, digital, brand and communications agencies, in particular those specialising in the luxury marketplace.

Course content

Compulsory Modules

You will study eight compulsory modules and a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. In addition, you will choose two optional modules and you can complete either a dissertation or client project or, if you start the course in September, you also have the opportunity to apply for a 1 year paid work placement in a marketing role. If you choose not to take a work placement, the course lasts 12 months. If you start in September and take the work placement the course last 24 months.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Teaching Location

All teaching takes place on our newly redeveloped Headington Campus in the Clerici Building (the new home of Oxford Brookes Business School completed in 2017) and the John Henry Brookes Building. The Clerici Building has undergone a huge redevelopment creating a new home for the Business School, including a lecture theatre, teaching rooms, social learning spaces and a café.
