The course has been specially developed to meet the needs of school chaplains working in schools and academies. A diverse and exciting range of modules will enhance your theological, liturgical, spiritual and pastoral skills. Your study will consistently ask what is the practical school importance of key questions and issues. At the end of the course, in the dissertation, you will reflect theologically in depth on your own specific ministerial context.

The course is suitable for ordained and lay individuals. There is an increasing diversity in Christian ministry and that provision is only likely to become more varied in the future. Teaching is ecumenical and would be appropriate for those ministers seeking to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in a range of relevant theological areas.


Course content
You will study a varied and exciting series of modules aimed to develop your theological skills and understanding and help you apply this new knowledge to your specific context and concerns.

The MA is studied part-time by following a two year taught module programme followed by a one year dissertation module. The taught modules are delivered at residential schools in August, January and May.

At the beginning of the course you will explore critically the methodological presumptions which underpin practical and public theology. This provides a grounding for your theological engagement with your context. Further core modules are a practical theology project, spirituality, and ritual and liturgy. You may then undertake advanced study in important public theology topics such as biblical studies, ethics, pluralism and diversity, and missiology.

The modules are assessed through a variety of tasks including essays, book reviews, case studies, research project reports, and presentations. The final dissertation is 15,000 words.

The full rate for the MA is £640 per module which equates to £19200 per year. This is payable for each of the 3 years of study.

Reduced fees are available for those recommended for study by their local church authorities, the department of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies department of the University of Chichester, or by SCALA.

The reduced fee is £480 per module equating to £1440 per year for each of the three years of study.

Accommodation costs are in addition to the academic fee.

What you will study

The curriculum has been developed in consultation with industry and can be broadly grouped in three areas: the introduction of new facts and concepts in measurement and control; the application of facts and concepts to real measurement problems and systems; and subjects which are of general importance to the professional engineer, for example safety and safety management and management ethics and project planning.

Students complete eight taught modules - four in trimester A and four in trimester B; and a Masters project in trimester C.The MSc project will be carried out at the student's workplace; this can be in an area relevant to the company's production/maintenance function, thus providing maximum benefit to both the company and the individual.

Control Systems

Consolidates advanced classical and modern control design techniques emphasising the practical considerations in applying control design in an industrial environment. The appropriateness and difficulties encountered in applying various design techniques in practice will be explored. In particular system sensitivity, robustness and nonlinearity will be studied.

Data Acquisition and Analysis

Develops the ability to evaluate, in a given situation, the most appropriate strategy for acquiring data and understand the merits of this strategy with respect to other approaches. A range of modern time and frequency domain analysis techniques will also be discussed.

Industrial Case Studies

Following on from the foundation in measurement and instrumentation provided by the Measurement Theory and Devices module, students will now be equipped to study in depth instrumentation in industrial processes. This module will cover aspects of designing sensor systems for industrial measurements, instrument control, system troubleshooting and optimisation in industrial applications.

Distributed Instrumentation

Develops the ability to evaluate, in a given situation, the most appropriate strategy for acquiring and transmitting data and understand the merits of this strategy with respect to other approaches. A wide range of different instrument communication and networking techniques will be studied. In addition the module provides practical experience of hardware setup and software development, relating to these techniques.

Industrial Process Systems

Identification and system modelling from real data play an important role in this module. This approach thus leads to more complex and realistic models that can be used to design more robust and reliable controllers that take into account problematic physical effects such as time-delays and sensor noise. The module will cover more advanced aspects of control design such as feed forward and multivariable control.

Measurement Systems

A range of advanced measurement systems will be studied in depth. Sensors, signal processing, low-level signal measurements, noise-reduction methods and appropriate measurement strategies will be applied to industrial and environmental applications. The influence of environmental factors and operation conditions will be considered in relation to the optimisation of the measurement system.

Measurement Theory and Devices

Adopts a generalised approach to measurement theory and devices, allowing students to become familiar with the characteristics of measurement systems in terms of the underlying principles. In this way, the students will be able to develop a systems approach to problem solving. They should find this methodology to be a considerable benefit to them when they have to apply their expertise to solving more complex industrial measurement problems.

Professional Practice

Develops the students' ability to select, develop and plan an MSc research project, to research and critically analyse the literature associated with the project and to present research findings effectively, it will also provide students with the ability to apply a competent process of thinking to project planning and give them a critical understanding of safe and ethical working.

Cloud Computing and Web Services

This module provides analytical and practical coverage of cloud computing and web services. It focuses on the technology, frameworks and associated standards: cloud models, cloud platforms and scalability. It also provides coverage of current web service technology and data transport representations, and integrated cloud and web service application development. Current examples from industry technology are used throughout.

Big Data Landscape

This module covers the process of managing Big Data throughout its lifecycle, from requirements through retirement. The lifecycle crosses different application systems, databases and storage media. Students will gain an understanding of the full Big Data value chain. They will be able to analyse the challenges and opportunities associated with the different stages that Big Data passes through.

Data Analytics

This module covers the basic concepts of statistics needed to understand the critical concepts of data mining, machine learning and predictive analytics used in the visualisation and analysis of data, particularly Big data. Students will gain an understanding of data preparation, the process models used in analytics, the algorithms and their requirements, the implementation of these algorithms using current technologies, and their applicability to different types of scenario. They will also gain advanced practical skills in the design, implementation and evaluation of analytical solutions to problems involving Big Data.

Big Data Platforms

This module covers the platforms that support data storage, processing and analytics in Big Data scenarios. It focuses on highly scalable platforms that provide operational capabilities for real-time, interactive processing and on platforms that provide analytical capabilities for retrospective, complex analysis. Internet of Things

This module provides fundamental and practical coverage of the set of converging technologies known as the Internet of Things (IoT). It focuses on representative IoT applications, technologies, frameworks and associated standards that support and underpin IoT applications, such as sensor networks, messaging protocols, security, data storage, analytics, services and human interaction. The module provides in-depth practical coverage of representative IoT implementation frameworks including cloud-based service delivery models.

IT Professional Issues and Project Methods

This module seeks to develop understanding and practical skills in advanced project methods which are inline with industry regulations, standards and practices and are applicable to complex IT projects. Study is undertaken in an integrated fashion to ensure that the professional frameworks within which such projects are developed, deployed and managed are fully understood.

Masters Dissertation

Students will investigate a topical or emerging theme in Cloud Computing or related technologies. The dissertation acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of the student and the technical community in some specialist technical area. It serves through its length, complexity and rigour as a suitable vehicle for extending students' range of personal, interpersonal and communication skills. In addition it serves to develop and extend a range of high-level thinking skills, including analysing and synthesising skills and affords the opportunity for the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in a major piece of technical work.

Work placements

Students will be made aware of placement opportunities provided by our industry partners. Typically a placement would be undertaken after graduating from the MSc programme but opportunities can sometimes be made available for students to undertake their MSc Dissertation in partnership with a commercial company.

Assessment methods

The methods of assessment include class tests, coursework assignments, practical tests and technical reports. Practical implementation and evaluation form a significant part of the assessment for the taught modules and for the work of the MSc dissertation.

The module examines topics relating to electric power generation, transmission, distribution and utilisation. Advanced Industrial Communication Systems

Measurement Theories and Devices

Energy, Audit and Asset Management

Professional Practice

Focuses on two themes, the first aims to develop student moral autonomy within a professional technology framework. It will examine moral issues and moral decision processes through evaluative enquiry and application of professional codes of conduct specifically in relation to design, information technology and the Internet. The second theme enhances the student's knowledge of concepts, methods and application of technology and environmental management as applied to a new or existing venture.

Renewable Energy Technologies

Renewable energy is regarded as an integral part of a sustainable development strategy. This module concentrates on the renewable energy technologies most likely to succeed in the UK and other temperate countries, i.e. solar energy, energy from waste, wind, hydro and biomass.

Condition Monitoring

Aims to provide an understanding of both Mechanical and Electrical Condition monitoring and associated instrumentation requirements for successful condition monitoring. The main focus in Mechanical Condition Monitoring is vibration monitoring since this is the most popular method of determining the condition and diagnosing faults in rotational machines, although other techniques used in condition monitoring are also covered.

The development of these Masters options is in direct response to the specification of benchmark requirements for professional competence by the UK's Engineering Council (UK-SPEC). This programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The module also focuses on the interaction between the national economy and the construction sector including the forecasting of construction demand. It will also cover the microeconomic issues including supply chain management.

Construction Financial Management

Provides an understanding of financial management within the wider construction industry and how this can be affected through cyclical trends. All aspects of the financial management of construction projects are considered, with particular attention paid to capital investment decisions and cash flow management.

Development and Project Economics

The management of projects from a commercial perspective, i.e. the economic appraisal of projects.

Quantification and Costing of Works

Core competencies for the quantity surveyor. The module examines the measurement and quantification of construction works using a range of measurement methods. It also examines estimating and pricing methods of construction works based upon a variety of information.

Risk and Value Management

The management of risk on international construction projects including methodologies for risk identification, analysis, acceptance and transfer - vital elements to the success of a project - using hypothetical and live projects to place the topic in context.

Sustainable Design and Construction

Core construction technology competencies related to sustainability for the quantity surveyor. Providing students with knowledge and understanding of the principles of sustainable design and construction; and introduces the main requirements, technologies, tools, methods, processes and systems required to develop a sustainable building.

International Construction Project Finance

The financial management from bid preparation to contract financing, with particular emphasis on capital investment decisions and cash flow management, all within the context of international construction projects.

Project Management

Project management concepts, the roles and responsibilities of project managers and organisational structures within which project management operates.

Masters Dissertation

This course will equip you with the knowledge to develop enabling and life engagement focussed services and interventions for people living with dementia, and their carers.

The course is inter-disciplinary, exploring different approaches to enhancing life engagement for people who have dementia and their carers. The course is not limited to a health and social care perspective. The design focus looks at ways in which the environment (buildings, urban spaces, transport) can be designed or modified to provide meaningful activity and support for people with dementia and their carers.

This pioneering course has strong links with the Institute for Dementia at the University of Salford, an international centre of excellence in research, education and innovation. Advanced Practice stage

Internships as part of the Advanced Practice stage may be paid or unpaid. How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops to enable you to grow your knowledge of the business world. In addition, you will be expected to engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Assessment for this programme takes place through a mix of assignments, presentations and group work, giving you multiple methods for you to show your understanding of the course material.

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. Course Structure

Fast Track: If you’re a highly qualified student with a four-year degree, the Fast Track lets you run at full throttle to complete the IMM in one year.

Full Track: If you have a three-year bachelor’s degree or simply wish to go into depth and take advantage of all the options the programme offers, the Full Track is for you. You’ll complete the IMM in two years.

At this point in the programme, you’ll have built a solid foundation in business management. You’ll then select courses that will either prepare you as a specialist in your area(s) of interest or broaden your managerial knowledge even further.

For elective courses during this period, you may opt to study in Nantes or travel to one of our IMM partner institutions for a term in Asia or Europe.

If during this optional period you’d like to further develop or refine your expertise, work closely with a new group of peer and partner contacts, or sharpen your language skills, an additional Summer Term programme is available in Nantes free of charge. Small group study, projects and company visits are just a small part of these programmes.

Now it’s time to select courses that will either prepare you as a specialist in your area(s) of interest or broaden your managerial knowledge even further.

For elective courses during this period, you may opt to study in Nantes or travel to one of our IMM partner institutions for a term in North America, Europe, the Middle East or North Africa.

Dissertation

Fast Track: Concurrent with periods 2 & 3 (January to November)
Full Track: Period 5 (January to June) of 2nd academic year

Delve into your real-world international study of a business and management area that will influence the trajectory of your career. This dissertation is both academic and practical, allowing you to showcase what you have learned and how you plan to apply it.

You’ll write this dissertation and can defend it either in person in Nantes or via Skype.

Internship (optional)

Fast Track: Concurrent with period 3 (July to December)
Full Track: Concurrent with period 5 (January to June) of 2nd academic year

This internship option allows you to build connections with our network of French and international corporate partners. Apply your knowledge and skills within your sector, and further strengthen your international portfolio and employability. Internships in France are paid; this will vary from country to country, depending on local laws.

You’ll secure your internship with a company of your choice (with the assistance of our internal job board). The internship will be guided by a faculty member, so you’ll gain both a hands-on practical understanding and an academic one – something that looks good on any resume.

Within this programme alone, our student body represents 25+ nationalities from top universities around the world, and our faculty represents 15+ nationalities – with loads of international industry experience. We provide you with a highly international experience, even if you opt to stay in Nantes throughout the programme.
