Our MSc in Advanced Computer Science and IT Management is taught in collaboration with Manchester Business School. As such, the programme benefits from the offerings of both schools. Manchester Business School is the largest campus-based business and management school in the UK offering world-leading business education informed by leading edge theory and practice. Similarly, the School of Computer Science is renowned as a world-class centre of excellence in computing teaching and research.  

This course is ideal for students who have the desire to drive technology into effective use in business. Information systems are pervasive in every aspect of industry, business and society and therefore there is growing demand for people who have a high level of technical knowledge and are prepared for a leadership role, utilising entrepreneurial and management skills in the solution of business problems. This course is centred around a Management theme, which encompasses relevant MBS course units, and combines it with a choice of complementary Computer Science themes such as Data Management, Software Engineering, and Advanced Web Technologies. The students take modules from 4 theme pools, two in IT Management and two in Computer Science. The course also provides a specialisation inInformation Management .

Coursework and assessment

Teaching and assessment take place through small group lectures, supervised laboratory work, mini-projects and independent learning. Course units are assessed by a mixture of written examinations, computer based practical work, and a range of coursework assessments including assessed mini-projects, group projects, reports and essays. The MSc requires a project dissertation to be submitted.

Course unit details

The collaborative nature of the course ensures that students benefit from the offerings of both the School of Computer Science and the Manchester Business Scool. Taught course units can be chosen from the broad range of Advanced Computer Science course units. In addition, there are course units especailly developed by the Manchester Business School covering topics on computing and IT support for strategic analysis and management, strategic change and effective decision making in corporate organisations.

Programmes for computer science or computer engineering graduates who wish to develop a specialism in computer systems and advanced software engineering or computer networks.

We offer specialist programmes with an emphasis on all aspects of networking some with extra content on wireless and mobile aspects. There are computer security and computer forensics programmes suitable for the practitioner who wishes to further their skills.

“I chose the MSc Computer Science as a conversion from my previous War and Society degree, primarily employment opportunities. The course was by no means easy for me coming from an arts background, and the first few weeks I felt a little over my head, but thanks to the truly stimulating content from the syllabus and the high quality of the teaching within the department I soon caught up and began to thrive on the course. My project revolved around a comparative study of the Haskell Web-Framework Yesod and ASP.NET. Student Profile

Francesca Madeddu, originally from Italy, completed an outstanding Master’s thesis (which earned her a distinction) investigating interaction with augmented reality on mobile devices. More specifically, she investigated how to interact with virtual Egyptian artefacts placed in real scenes. Course outline

The Computer and Systems Engineering Master's programme focuses on the education of designing and using modern complex computer systems. Nowadays computer systems are used more or less everywhere, they are extremely diverse and most of them are "invisible" to users. Such systems include not only traditional PC-s and sophisticated supercomputers, but also computer systems "embedded" into cars and mobile phones, for instance. Most of these computers are interconnected via various wired and wireless networks and do not work in isolation. These embedded systems can be either stand-alone items or an integral part of a larger system and represent the combination of software and hardware designed to perform specific functions.

When studying the Computer and Engineering Systems programme, students are exposed to systems design and modelling, computer architectures and programming, to name few of the topics. Exposure to those topics will position students well for jobs at small, medium and large companies. Their jobs will involve defining, designing and using embedded computer system in areas such as automotive electronics, consumer devices, telecommunications, etc.

The Computer and Systems Engineering programme is supervised by two departments of TUT - Department of Computer Engineering (DCE) and Department of Computer Control (DCC). Students can choose between two of the following specialisations:

  • Computer Systems Design (supervised by DCE) focuses on the modelling, analysing, designing and testing of complex systems consisting of both hardware and software components;

Program Structure

The programme comprises 120 ECTS, distributed into the following components:
▪ Four compulsory modules (Advanced HCI, Information Processing and Presentation, Virtual/Augmented Reality and Mobile HCI), each comprising 9 ECTS.
▪ Elective module (24 ECTS in total).
▪ Two research projects (15 ECTS each).
▪ The Master’s thesis module (30 ECTS).

In accordance with the Weimar Bauhaus model, research-oriented projects contribute towards a large proportion of the master’s programme. The elective modules allows students to incorporate courses from other degree programmes such as Media Studies, Media Management, Architecture and Urbanism, and Art and Design alongside the general Computer Science and Media course catalogue. Graded language courses up to 6 ECTS may also be included, or an additional HCI related project. The fourth and final semester is dedicated to the master’s thesis.

The HCI Master was developed based upon our experiences with the long-standing Computer Science & Media Master program. CS&M graduates have all readily found employment in industry and academia, in R&D departments at large companies (e.g. Volkswagen, BMW), research institutes (e.g. Fraunhofer), as well as at universities, with many continuing into a PhD.

Usability is becoming more and more important for computer systems as computers are embedded in many aspects of everyday life. The ability to design complex systems and interfaces with regard to usability and appropriateness for the usage context increases in importance. HCI graduates can work both in software development, in particular in conception and development of novel interface technologies, and in the area of usability and user research, which both grow in demand on the job market. Our unique project-based study approach provides graduates with a skill set that qualifies them both for research and industry careers.

Higher Education Entrance Qualification:

Students need a school leaving certificate for studies completed at secondary education level. The formal entrance qualifications for international students are checked by uni-assist (see application process).

Academic Background in Computer Science (CS):

You need some academic background in CS, such as a bachelor's degree in CS, business informatics, HCI or related areas with a focus on CS and HCI. Students with a minor in computer science (at least 60 European Credit Points) may apply, here, decisions are on a case-by-case-base.

Only diplomas of international accredited universities will be accepted. Non-academic, practical experience in computer science alone does not suffice to qualify you.

Sufficient Marks from previous studies:

If the converted credit-weighted average grade of your Bachelor's degree is between 1.0 and 2.0 in the German system, your chances of acceptance are very good. Uni-assist does the conversion into the German system.

The Computer Science MSc provides a balance between computer science theory and practical software engineering skills, including teamwork for industrial or research clients. Graduates find employment in the IT industry, or complement their first degree subject with computer science knowledge, leading to interdisciplinary industrial positions and PhD research.

About this degree

You will learn fundamental aspects of how computers work by taking modules in computer architecture, operating systems, compilers, data structures and algorithms. You will also gain practical knowledge in areas such as human-computer interaction, App design, databases and software engineering. You will develop programming skills in modern languages, such as object-oriented Java for Android development. 

Team working, project planning and communication skills are developed by working in small groups developing software for real industrial and research clients. Optional modules allow specialisation in subjects such as functional programming, computer music, entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

As a postgraduate student on a Computing and Information Systems course, you will have the opportunity to complete up to six months of professional experience as part of your degree.

Our longstanding internship scheme gives you the chance to apply the knowledge and skills gained from your taught modules within a real business environment. An internship also provides you with professional development opportunities that enhance your technical skills and business knowledge.

Internships delivered by City, University of London offer an exceptional opportunity to help you stand out in the competitive IT industry job market. The structure of the course extends the period for dissertation submission to January, allowing you to work full-time for up to six months. You will be supported by our outstanding Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) should you wish to consider undertaking this route.

Teaching and learning

The teaching and learning methods we use mean that your specialist knowledge and autonomy increase as you progress through each module. Active researchers guide your progress in the areas of Games Development, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence and Audio, which culminates with an individual project. This is an original piece of research conducted with academic supervision, but largely independently and, where appropriate, in collaboration with industrial partners.

Taught modules are delivered through a series of 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions. Lectures are normally used to:

present and exemplify the concepts underpinning a particular subject;
highlight the most significant aspects of the syllabus;
indicate additional topics and resources for private study.
Tutorials help you develop the skills to apply the concepts we have covered in the lectures. We normally achieve this through practical problem solving contexts.

Laboratory sessions give you the opportunity to apply concepts and techniques using state-of-the-art software, environments and development tools. In addition, City’s online learning environment Moodle contains resources for each of the modules from lecture notes and lab materials, to coursework feedback, model answers, and an interactive discussion forum.

We expect you to study independently and complete coursework for each module. This should amount to approximately 120 hours per module if you are studying full time. Modules are assessed through written examination and coursework, where you will need to answer theoretical and practical questions to demonstrate that you can analyse and apply computer games technology methods.

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop an autonomous research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply your learning to solve a real-world problem, designing and implementing a solution and evaluating the result. At the end of the project you submit a substantial MSc project report, which becomes the mode of assessment for this part of the programme.

Modules

The programme is composed of eight taught modules and a final project.

The eight modules provide you with a firm grounding in computer games technology, including mathematics, programming, and game engines and architecture along with specialist topics in computer graphics, physics, AI, and audio.

The project component gives you an opportunity to carry out an extended piece of work under the supervision of one of our specialist academic and research staff, at the cutting edge of games technology, in an industrial or academic context.

Designed for graduates who want to move into computing from another discipline, MSc Computing and IT Management provides you with a broad technical knowledge and a sound business context for managing IT systems.

Through this course you will learn the skills needed to develop business applications through a fundamental understanding of software and web development, e-commerce and database management. You will also gain an understanding of the professional skills required to lead IT managers by working as a part of a team on a business change project.

You will have the option of learning about new and emerging technologies, such as cloud computing, that are radically changing the opportunities and threats for the provision of IT systems. You may also opt for human-centric computing which focuses on defining and delivering effective information systems from a human-centric perspective. You also have the option of learning the knowledge and skills required to create interactive visualisations and explanations of data.

Students may choose to apply for a paid 7-12 month professional work placement to be undertaken on completion of Spring semester and before completing the MSc course with a 60-credit dissertation. This provides valuable work experience to develop your IT Professional skills.

The dissertation provides the opportunity of developing your research skills and applying technical and management concepts and techniques to solve a complex computing problem.

This two-year course offers a balanced combination of theory and practice, and can serve either as preparation for a career as an IT professional, doctoral research, or as a self-contained advanced qualification in its own right.

Teaching

The School of Computer Science and Informatics has a strong and active research culture which informs and directs our teaching. We are committed to providing teaching of the highest standard and received an excellent report in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review.

A diverse range of teaching and learning styles are used throughout the MSc in Computing and IT Management. Students will attend lectures, participate in seminars, workshops and tutorials, and carry out practical and laboratory work.

Students obtain support materials usually via Learning Central (Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment).

You will also undertake a project and independent study to enable you to complete a dissertation. Dissertation topics may be suggested by you or chosen from a list of options proposed by academic staff reflecting their current interest.

Support

As a School, we pride ourselves on providing a supportive environment in which we are able to help and encourage our students.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who will monitor your progress throughout your time at university and will support you in your personal development planning. You will see your Personal Tutor at least once each semester.

Our Senior Personal Tutor can also advise and respond to any personal matters as they arise. The School also has a formal student-staff panel to discuss topics or issues of mutual interest.

Students are responsible for obtaining their placement. The School actively assists students on “with Placement” courses in finding a suitable placement.

Feedback:

Feedback on coursework may be provided via written comments on work submitted, by provision of ‘model’ answers and/or through discussion in contact sessions.

Assessment

The taught modules are assessed through examinations and a wide range of in-course assessments, such as written reports, extended essays, practical assignments and oral presentations.

The placement is assessed through a reflective report that demonstrates that the student has developed skills as an IT Professional.

The individual project and dissertation will enable you to demonstrate your ability to build upon and exploit knowledge and skills gained to exhibit critical and original thinking based on a period of independent study and learning.

Compared to the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science students acquire greater ability to model and solve complex problems, integrating different advanced skills and technologies. The Master of Science programme in Computer Science and Engineering aims at training engineers able to develop and use information technology tools so as to satisfy the widest variety of applications. Four tracks are available, corresponding to four main cultural areas. The “Communication and Society Engineering” track focuses on the integration of computer science and communication skills, for designing, implementing, presenting and evaluating innovative multimedia applications. The methodologies for the management of data, such as data mining, pattern recognition, information retrieval, constitute the core of the “Data Engineering” track. The “ICT Engineering, Business and Innovation” track aims at building professional profiles that combine a solid computer science background with managerial capabilities, through a selection of computer science and management courses, integrated with a broad cross-disciplinary project, carried out in collaboration with companies and Management Engineering students and professors. Finally, the “Sound and Music Engineering” track (in collaboration with the “Giuseppe Verdi” Music Conservatory of Como) focuses on the concepts and processes that are behind generation, analysis, manipulation/ processing, transport, access, coding and rendering of audio and musical signals. The programme is taught in English.
