Our MA Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese) is a highly competitive, sought-after master's, ideal for those with an interest and aptitude for translation or business interpreting.

You may be working already as a translator and interpreter in mainland China, Taiwan, the UK or elsewhere, or looking to establish yourself with the specialist skills needed to excel in this profession.

The focus of the course is on written translation from English to Chinese and Chinese to English, as well as business interpreting between English and Chinese. In particular, you'll develop translation and interpreting skills suited to working in business and tailored to market needs in mainland China, Taiwan, the UK and other regions.

The course is highly practical so you'll have plenty of opportunities to hone and develop your skills. You will:

  • gain extensive experience in translating a wide range of texts, from general business communications to specialist and technical materials
  • take part in weekly simulated 'real life' business liaison scenarios to enhance your interpreting and negotiation capabilities
  • gain practical experience of translation management software
  • develop sought-after and important business skills such as editing and proofreading
  • gain useful insights into marketing yourself as a freelance translator and interpreter

Learning and teaching

The teaching at Bath is highly regarded internationally. You will be taught exclusively by experienced tutors who have worked as professional translators and/or interpreters; many have interpreted for heads of state and government ministers and work for global organisations such as the EU and UN. As such, they can share a wealth of experience with you and provide useful connections to help with potential job opportunities and internships.

We also regularly arrange visits from representatives of the language services of international organisations, government departments and commercial enterprises, to give you insights into their working practices.

Graduate prospects

Studying on this course will give you the in-depth training needed to work as a Chinese-English translator and interpreter in a variety of contexts, with a strong focus on translation and interpreting for business.

You may go on to work as a freelance translator and interpreter and potentially set up your own translation and interpreting business. You could also work as an in-house interpreter or translator, teach at a university or take your skills into other fields.

We also have an extremely active alumni network and tight-knit community that shares career advice. This enables us to help with short-term interpreting and translation opportunities supported by recent graduates.

In the consecutive and simultaneous interpreting modules you will gain invaluable experience of real working conditions and have opportunities for experiential learning and reflective analysis.

Our simulations are joined by professionals from a variety of fields who participate as live guest speakers on a case-by-case basis.

The practice-based components of the programme are complemented by background lectures which will help you to understand the major principles of interpreting and translation, and provide you with a conceptual and methodological framework for analysing, discussing and justifying interpreting-related decisions.

State-of-the-art facilities are in place to enable you to practise each interpreting mode in the most realistic environment possible. You will have access to three conference suites equipped with ISO-approved double interpreting booths to practise simultaneous interpreting according to professional standards.

A portable interpreting system allows for training in mobile interpreting, for instance simulating the tour of a museum, factory or plant. Our facilities also include a two-way and multipoint video-conferencing system that makes it possible to simulate remote interpreting, with clients and interpreters interacting via video link.

The programme pays particular attention to the emerging forms of distance interpreting, which are an increasingly important feature in the professional landscape. We are the first university to teach remote and mobile interpreting based on research findings in this area.

Programme structure

The MA Interpreting is studied over one year (full-time mode) only. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

In addition to enjoying regular contact with professional interpreters in your practice-based modules, you will benefit from course components that address the business and industry aspects of the profession.

For example, insights into the industry will be provided by the external guest speakers we invite to our Translation Studies seminars.

These include professional translators, interpreters, subtitlers and audio describers; professionals working in public services, companies and international organisations; representatives of professional translator/interpreter associations as well as translation/interpreting researcher.

You can also become a student member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and/or the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL), and become a full member after graduation.

The MA Interpreting is studied over one year (full-time mode) only. 

Language-specific options are paired with English. If you are a native speaker of English, you can take up to two Consecutive and Dialogue Interpreting options (in another language). If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally take one Consecutive and Dialogue Interpreting option (your mother tongue paired with English).

You can also choose one ab initio language if you wish to expand your portfolio of translation languages.

More about this course

The Interpreting MA is a vocational course grounded in theory and practice and specifically set up to train professional interpreters. The course offers you an opportunity to acquaint yourself with the theoretical and professional frameworks of interpreting applied to a range of interpreting types: Public Service Interpreting and Conference Interpreting. Remote Interpreting (telephone and video-conferencing) is embedded in the course.

A key part of the course is a work placement during which you will perform live interpreting tasks under supervision and shadow professional interpreters at work. The course offers a wide range of language combinations paired with English: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese. Further language combinations with English may also be available, such as Arabic, subject to demand, staff expertise and availability. In the past we have offered Romanian, Dari and Lithuanian.

Students on the course benefit from excellent interpreting facilities. Our Interpreting Suite is equipped with six AIIC (Association Internationale des Interprètes de Conference) standard soundproof booths, each with audio and video digital recording facilities. The Interpreting Suite facilities are the same as those used in Brussels for the European Commission and each booth is equipped with broadband and audio-visual digital recording. Conference Guest Speakers and events are filmed and stored on our virtual platform, so that students can revisit the events.

Students will also benefit from the use of our virtual platform to access teaching materials and documentaries, presentations for conferences and recordings of mock conferences. They will be able to chat and exchange their views in forums on the virtual platform, which is accessible from any computer with an internet connection. They will also be able to present their written assessment via the virtual platform, from a computer with an internet connection.

You will be assessed by a variety of coursework, interpreting exams, presentations, essays, and independent work and a research project (at MA level).

The MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Conference Interpreting is designed to equip you with the knowledge and advanced interpreting skills required for a career in conference interpreting. All our interpreting trainers are practising conference interpreters in language combinations that reflect market demands. Most trainers are also AIIC members. The programme offers simultaneous and consecutive interpreting training in five languages - French, German, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. These are key languages in international organisations such as the UN and EU and are also in demand on the freelance market.

The MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Conference Interpreting can be studied over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time). Part-time study is strongly supported and is actively facilitated in the timetabling of teaching hours for the MA, wherever possible.

Postgraduate Diploma   (PG Dip)

The Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) in Conference Interpreting is a slightly shorter course available for students who do not wish to complete a professional portfolio or research dissertation.

Two distinct conference interpreter profiles

As a prospective student, you will offer one of two profiles, reflecting the two distinct profiles of practising conference interpreters:

  • Profile 1: You have English as your native language (A language) and two passive foreign languages (C languages). You will be trained in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting out of both C languages into your A language
  • Profile 2: You have Russian, Chinese, French, German or Spanish as your native language (A language) and English as an active foreign language (B language) or English as your A language and one of the five languages mentioned as your B. You will be trained in both types of interpreting in both directions (i.e. B-A and A-B)

Why Manchester?

The University of Manchester's MA/PG Diploma in Conference Interpreting is designed to offer intensive training to enable students to develop the necessary skills for a career as a professional conference interpreter. Class sizes are kept small, to ensure that students can receive individualised feedback. This in turn enables students to progress at their own pace. Students develop their interpreting skills under the guidance of a core team of interpreter trainers - all of whom have worked for international organisations such as the EU or UN, either as staff or on a freelance basis. In addition, students attend professional skills master classes, in which visiting conference interpreters and potential employers offer insights into the profession.

We have two interpreting suites equipped with 12 booths and Brähler consoles used widely in the profession.

Internationally recognised

The course design reflects best practice criteria set out by the internationally recognised professional body for conference interpreters, AIIC (the International Association of Conference Interpreters). It includes a module specifically focused on professional development, allowing students to focus on the contexts in which they can expect to work as conference interpreters. To ensure that students have an understanding of the dynamics of interpreting in multilingual meetings, simulated conferences are run during the second semester, during which interpretation is provided from several languages. Students considering a career in research benefit from MACINT's location within the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies - with staff research interests ranging from translation and conflict to the interpreting profession.

We strive to keep our course up-to-date with the latest developments in the profession and to find ways to make our course as useful and relevant as possible. To that end in 2015 we introduced the following exciting changes:

Additional simultaneous training

We now offer a four-week advanced simultaneous training course to MA students following their final exams. The aim is to give students a further opportunity to bring the standard of their interpreting up to the level required of professional conference interpreters. After the training, students wishing to complete the MA will produce a piece of written work outlining their preparation for a hypothetical interpreting assignment. Students will be encouraged to pick a meeting for which webcasts and documentation are available online, prepare, and then test the effectiveness of their preparation by having a go interpreting from the webcast.

For an additional fee, PG Dip students and graduates from other universities can attend this extra training period if the relevant language groups are running.

Subject-specific training to enhance background knowledge

A new module was introduced to increase students' knowledge of subject-matter that they are likely to encounter as interpreters. This includes the workings of major international organisations (e.g. EU, UN), diplomacy, international law, economics and foreign policy.

Additional language

Students taking the postgraduate diploma will be offered an opportunity, as part of their course, to work on a new or existing language by enrolling on one of the university's language courses.

All simultaneous interpreting activities take place in the fully digital Interpreting Suite which also offers the latest multimedia facilities for virtual classes, recording of interpreting performances, as well as original speeches for student practise. After the course

The course modules are designed to prepare students to work as professional conference interpreters on the private market, for commercial organisations or large international organisations such as the European institutions or the United Nations. Work placement is the key element of the course, as well as site visits and dummy booth practice in the European Commission, European Parliament, European Court of Justice and United Nations headquarters. Students who complete the course automatically fulfil the requirement to access the EU/UN interpreting accreditation test to work as conference interpreters. Graduates can continue to come to London Metropolitan University to practise conference interpreting thanks to our short courses and events (CPD).

Graduates are also fully qualified to work as conference interpreters on the private market in the UK and abroad, and to continue onto further study with a PhD.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

A strong command of English is required, since each of the foreign languages is combined with English.

You will be taught interpreting for use at conferences i.e. simultaneous interpreting in booths and consecutive interpreting which is often used at conference dinners or other big international events. You will also be taught interpreting skills and given advice and personal feedback in each lesson. You will be able to record your performance using specialist recording devices which enable you to not only receive personal feedback from your tutors but to further analyse this feedback and listen to your performance later on.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Two dedicated Brähler interpreting suites provide state-of-the-art learning opportunities. You will experience a mixture of practical seminars and workshops, including bi-weekly mock conferences.

As a student at the School of Language, Literature and International Studies, you will have access to a number of facilities which create an active and stimulating learning environment.

We use a variety of assessment procedures including coursework, practical tests, project reports, examinations and a dissertation. The assessment methods and criteria we use are closely linked to the learning outcomes of each module.

On MA Interpreting and Translation, you have to complete a total of 9 modules, one of which, the dissertation, is a double module. The course must be taken full-time over one academic year, though the dissertation is submitted 3 months after the taught modules finish. You will choose a language to combine with English and work to and from that language throughout the course, developing your interpreting skills.

During Mock Conferences which are held every other week, you will encounter a wide variety of real-life topics which your lecturers have already undertaken as an assignment. We have a higher frequency than is standard at UK universities as we and students have found them so beneficial. In these Mock Conferences real life interpreting scenarios are used with changing speakers, differing language combinations and illustrating all the challenges large conferences may entail.

You will be trained in the specific skills of high level technical/business interpreting; an area often neglected in conference interpreter training. The scenarios used here are based on real assignments undertaken by the various members of teaching staff on the course, who will later give you not only feedback on your performance but also tips and information on what happened at the actual assignment.

Not only is our course approved at the Professional Interpreter, Professional Translatorand Conference Interpreterlevels by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI); Monash is the only university in Australia to be a member of the Conference Internationale d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interpretes (CUITI), the world's oldest and most prestigious international association of tertiary institutions offering degrees in translation and interpreting.

Aimed at students with advanced bilingual proficiency, the course offers a foundation in the theories of translation and interpreting, as well as training in research in the field. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to conceptualise translation and interpreting studies as an academic discipline in its historical, cross-disciplinary and intercultural contexts.

There are two specialisations available in the course:

- Translation (offered for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish), and

- Interpreting and translation (offered for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish).

Through professional internships, you will gain real-world experience, pick up useful skills to prepare for the transition from university to the workplace, and build professional networks, improving your graduate employability prospects. Participating employers and industry partners may become a useful recruitment resource for graduates of the program.

This degree is also available in a double degree course with Jean Moulin Lyon III (France), with Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (Japan), with Southeast University (China) and with University of Trieste (Italy). In each case you will study one year in Australia and one year in the country of the partner university; and in each case you will receive two master's degrees, one from each university. The course is structured in two parts. Part A. Foundations for advanced interpreting and translation studies and Part B. Core Masters study. Depending upon prior qualifications, students in the Translation specialisation (only) may receive credit for Part A.

The focus of these studies is the theory and practice of both translation and interpreting and familiarising you with current research models and methodologies in translation studies. PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of interpreting and translation practice, providing intensive language-specific practice in written and oral transfer skills to the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) Professional level. In addition to the relevant theoretical frameworks, the core units will also provide you with the discourse analysis, ethical and professional frameworks that are essential for professional interpreting and translation practice.

Job titles from both the public and private sectors could include, but not necessarily be restricted to, translator, interpreter, technical writer, international communication specialist (in advertising, marketing, media, and public affairs), educator, administrator, etc. Equipped with new business skills, you could also work freelance or establish your own translation and interpreting agency or business. The MA in Welsh Writing in English offers an exciting array of modules from the traditional core of English studies in the context of contemporary approaches to the subject.

Key Features of MA in Welsh Writing in English

The MA allows you to range widely across English studies rather than confine yourself to a narrow field and draws on the individual research expertise of members of staff.

From the student’s point of view the MA is openly structured. You define your own pathway through the Department’s MA provision. This means that as well as choosing modules from the MA in English, you can select modules in any combination from the other specialist MAs offered by the Department, such as the MA in Welsh Writing in English and the MA in Gender and Culture.

You develop your dissertation project on a topic of your own choosing in consultation with a supervisor.

The College of Arts and Humanities has a Graduate Centre. The Graduate Centre fosters and supports individual and collaborative research activity of international excellence and offers a vibrant and supportive environment for students pursuing postgraduate research and taught masters study. The Centre provides postgraduate training to enhance academic and professional development and facilitates participation in seminar programmes, workshops and international conferences.

The full-time Welsh Writing in English course comprises three modules taken in each academic semester (a total of six modules) and then a dissertation over the summer. There are three core modules and three optional modules. The dissertation component draws on issues and themes developed throughout the year, or emerges from a topic of the student's proposing.

The only applied structural geology Masters in the UK. Providing you with advanced training in the practical application of structural geology, preparing you either for employment in the hydrocarbon or mining industries or for postgraduate study (PhD).

Fieldwork

The following fieldwork to the UK and overseas is free, and forms an integral part of the course. It is directly linked to learning outcomes in the classroom.

  • An introductory field day to Ingleton, North Yorkshire.
  • A 6-day trip to the South West of England. Consider both extensional and compressional tectonics, basin-scale to fault to reservoir scale deformation, fault seal analysis, kinematic and geometric fault evolution, restorations, and 3D fault analysis.
  • A 12-day trip to the Central Spanish Pyrenees. This trip serves as a summary trip where you will pull together elements from the entire course. Consider regional scale orogenic deformation through to basin scale to fracture scale. And the influence of sediment-structure interaction in basin evolution, and tie outcrop scale observations with seismic examples.
