Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Advancements in technology such as the increased use of Wi-Fi, are creating exciting career opportunities for graduates with the right skills. Graduates of this Masters award can enter the telecommunications industry in many different roles, conduct research or work towards a PhD.

Internship

Internships are only available to students studying full-time: Following successful completion of six taught modules, you will be competitively selected to join participating UK companies or University Research Centres on a six-month period of unpaid work placement before returning to undertake your major research project. All students who have an offer for the MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (with internship) are guaranteed an internship either in industry or in a University Research Centre.

There are 25 internship places available. Students who wish to undertake an internship must apply for the MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (with internship). It is anticipated that there will be significant demand for this programme and applicants are advised to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Applications will be considered on a first come first served basis and the numbers of students offered a place on the programme with internship will be capped.

If the course is already full and we are unable to offer you a place on the Masters course with internship, we may be able to consider you for the standard MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications (without internship) which is a shorter programme.

Assessment methods

Each of the six taught modules is typically assessed through 50% coursework and 50% closed-book class test. The major project is assessed through presentation to a panel of examiners, viva and written report.

Facilities

A state-of-the-art University library gives you access to most of the world’s leading publications. Other major facilities include a Cisco Academy networking laboratory, a Wireless Communications laboratory including a 1-65 GHz anechoic chamber and a satellite communication earth station, and a Communication Systems simulation laboratory equipped with PCs running the latest versions of MATLAB, SIMULINK, STK and other software.

In addition, we have recently opened a Calypto lab, which has software licences and support for the Catapult C toolset. This is used to develop advanced electronic products, such as the next generation of smart phones, more quickly and cost-effectively and to help engineers overcome design challenges in the increasingly complex world of board and chip design. The lab is sponsored by Calypto Design Systems Inc, a leader in electronic design automation. We are one of only four UK universities and 60 universities globally that have been granted permission to use the software worth £1.9m.

The new Renesas Embedded Systems lab comprises 25 new high-end terminals running cuttingedge tools. The facility was designed in collaboration with Renesas, the world’s leading supplier of microcontrollers, whose sponsorship helps ensure that students are always working with the latest technologies and development tools.

Embedded systems are at the heart of many engineering devices and you will investigate how they are designed and implemented in hardware and software. You will learn how to critically understand and apply circuit and system simulation techniques, with an emphasis on products that incorporate embedded technology. You will also understand the design of embedded systems, including microcontroller architectures and real-time embedded hardware operating systems.

The optoelectronics course offers an intensive but flexible learning pattern, with two start points each year – February and September. There are three major blocks during the 18 months’ study (full-time), which includes 12 months of teaching and a possible six months of internship*. The Master's programme in International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship seeks to prepare aspiring individuals for a managerial career within either the tourism or aviation industry. The course offers the opportunity to interpret and assess trends and changing management practices within the tourism and aviation industry. In doing so it widens career opportunities and the possibility of movement between the two sectors. The mode of study is full-time - studied over 18 months and the internship component is completed after all taught modules have been passed.

You will be expected to undertake a total of 1,200 hours of planned full-time work experience or internship in a tourism or aviation organisation. Course detail

The MA programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of tourism and aviation management, by drawing upon international case study material, to understand the global operations of both the tourism and aviation sectors. The course seeks to exploit synergies between the tourism and aviation industries to critically inspect the management-related issues, which is a key strength of the programme structure. The programme is taught by experienced team of academics, all with a background in either tourism and/or aviation management. Many of these staff are extensively published and are asked to speak at events and conferences throughout the world.

MA International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship adopts a blended teaching and learning strategy. Assessment

Assessments feature both formative (in-course) and summative (final) assessment. Normally a module comprises of no more than two or three pieces of work. No formal examinations are set. The course embraces the use of essays, reports, presentations, case studies, portfolios, audits, in-class tests, project plans, industry-based briefs, business games and work-place simulation (to name but a few). Traditionally the teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the school at Masters level has been to engage with a wide variety of assessment techniques reflecting the broad abilities of different students to meet the assessment outcomes of the various modules.

The Internship

The internship requires that you work for a minimum of 1,200 hours (equivalent to 30 weeks) with a hospitality employer. These positions can be in either paid or non-paid employment. The important thing is that the internship allows you to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired on your course to a practical work-based situation. The internship will allow you to improve and acquire new skills, explore various career opportunities, network and work with others a part of a team.

It will also enhance your understanding of the world of work and what constitutes professional practice in the workplace. In doing so the internship seeks to enhance your career prospects and allow you to become more focussed in determining a potential career pathway. Please note the University does not guarantee a work placement for your internship – the onus is with the student to pro-actively seek an internship, which requires working closely with the placements team.

Career and study progression

The course combines, academic rigor with contemporary managerial and strategic issues in luxury hospitality management. Whilst this enhances your employability in the growing and dynamic hospitality industry, it can also be applied to a range of other professions.

Skills such as brand management or customer experience are also valuable in industries such as PR or advertising, whilst studying business in a global context prepares you for numerous other career paths.

For a start, it is a course unique to the University of Dundee – there's nowhere else in the UK that offers a stand-alone graduate qualification in internships with this level of personal support and tuition.

How you will be taught

During the initial 4-week Preparation and Planning module, learning and teaching will be based around intensive, face-to-face, highly interactive and participatory lectures, seminars and tutorials.

During your internship, you will make full use of MyDundee, the University's Virtual Learning Environment to enhance and extend your learning. Students on internships based in Scotland will return to university 4 times during the internship to continue your career management development in a collegial environment. What will I study?

The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all our ‘Business with’ Masters pathways. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis, developing your strategic awareness, leadership potential and understanding of the theory and practice of international business. In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Marketing Management.

In the second semester you will build an understanding of the role of relationship marketing, and by doing so, recognise the importance of customer retention and the internal customer. You will also learn about the marketing processes within the context of a globalised world, with an understanding of the business implications. Throughout the course, you can develop an appreciation of the varying approaches to marketing for organisations working within a dynamic global environment and the effect these challenges place upon marketing planning in an international context.

Following your second semester, you will undertake the Advanced Practice element of this programme which consists of either an internship or an applied group consultancy project where you will work with a real organisation on a live business problem. You will benefit from valuable work experience and develop key business insights.

For those completing an internship, you will also undertake a dissertation in a marketing context, supported by an academic supervisor with relevant expertise from this subject area. You will be able to draw upon your learnings and experience from your internship for this. For those not undertaking an internship, you will complete your consultancy project.

Advanced Practice stage

This stage of your programme offers you the opportunity to secure a 12-15 week internship or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, both an excellent way to put your learning in to practice.

This stage of your course takes place between your second and final semester and is one semester (15 weeks) in duration.

The full duration of your programme depends on your start date:
-September start dates: your programme will last up to 22 months. You will have a summer break after Semester 2, and commence your Advanced Practice stage in September.
-January start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in January. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in September.
-May start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in May. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in January.

Internships

If you undertake an internship as part of this stage, it may be paid or unpaid, and will last 12-15 weeks. The internship can be sourced by students or the University. We will support you in the application process and equip you with the necessary internship application and selection skills (e.g. CV writing, interview techniques etc). All internships will be approved by the University to ensure that they offer you an appropriate learning experience and working environment. During your internship, you will be allocated an internship tutor who will visit you during your internship and support you in completing the internship assessment.

The module is assessed by a reflective portfolio which is focused on your development via this employment opportunity.

Consultancy project

The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation, working on consultancy-based projects on real business scenarios.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is taught using a range of methods, including: lectures, seminars, and workshops, where you will develop your understanding of today’s global businesses. You will be expected to engage in further independent study, involving directed and self-directed learning, to further build your knowledge.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. There will also be weekly academic support sessions designed to build your confidence and ability as a postgraduate learner. You will also be allocated an individual guidance tutor at induction. You will meet this tutor at regular intervals across your period of study.

Assessments for this course are based on a mix of assignments, presentations and group work.

Careers and further study

Graduates on the programme have joined a wide range of businesses, including graduate training schemes. A significant number of graduates have gone back to work for a family business or even started up their own businesses.

This makes it ideal for students seeking to add a practical dimension to their studies and understand the demands of workplace supervision and management. Internship opportunities exist throughout the industry within the UK.

Format

A variety of teaching methods will be used within course module deliveries especially to capture the applied aspects of project management. In fact the core modules were constructed with teaching variety methods from the outset. The pathways modules need to capture sector expectations and final dissertation offers a wideness of choice.

Assessment

The assessment offers a balance of assessment approaches of assignment only and some will have a mixture with an examination as an end assessment.

For example: The module Strategic Innovation Management initial assignment involves group work and requires a presentation creation and delivery. The final assignment is an individually developed document requiring you to conduct research on the use of projects in an organisation. There is no examination for the modules and assessment weighting 40/60.

There are only a total of 5 modules that require examinations as part of their end assessment for the course with maximum of only 4 examinations required for selected pathways.

Career and study progression

Project management plays an important role in nearly all organisation, from SMEs through to the largest global corporations. Knowledge and skills gained within this course will enable graduates to take on the role of project manager and/or become an effective member of a project management team.

Graduates are encouraged to further their study at the level of MPhil and PhD. We actively encourage students interested in research to make their interest known early on in their course.

ORGANIZATION

The international Master in European Project Planning and Management has a total duration of 5 months (800 hours) organized as follows:

- 2 months of classroom based training and project work. The classroom based training has a duration of 8 hour a day, from 9.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. The classroom based course is held in Florence (Italy). The classroom based part of the Master course is held at Pixel, in Florence (Italy).

- 3 months of internship, in public or private organizations. The intern works as an Assistant European project manager. The internship is held in one of the partner organizations based in one of the European Union’s member states.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have 15 to 25 years experience in European project planning, management, assessment and auditing.

Practical simulations are carried out for each topic analyzed. The objective of the practical activities is the simulation of the planning and management of European projects. At the end of the Master, every work group will have produced: a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership, administrative requirements, supporting documents etc.

INTERNSHIP

The Master offers the participants the opportunity to carry out a three month internship abroad in one of the European Union’s countries. The organizations hosting the students for the internship are all actively involved in European projects. Every student carries out the internship with the role of Assistant European Project Manager. The internship therefore gives the participants the opportunity to immediately put into practice the skills acquired through a direct involvement in the management of European projects.

About the program

This postgraduate professional program is designed to develop graduates to be work-ready for careers in nutrition and dietetics across practice areas including clinical dietetics, private practice, food service management, public health nutrition, sports nutrition and nutrition research. This program develops student competencies to exceed the accreditation requirements of the Dietitians Association of Australia, making graduates eligible to apply for accredited practising dietitian (APD) status within the Dietitians Association of Australia. This program is distinctive because of its emphasis on developing evidence-based practitioners that have had intensive preparation in evidence-based dietetic practice, nutrition research and international engagement. All students will be required to participate in an international placement as part of their program.

Learning and teaching methodology

The Bond University Master of Nutrition and Dietetic Practice program uses an education model comprising a combination of lectures, workshops, case studies, field trips, simulations, internships and research. In keeping with the program philosophy of producing dietitians with a difference, the program places an emphasis on real-world experience from the first semester. Students engage in activities such as case-based learning and simulation to develop their competency as nutrition professionals.

Specialist consultant practitioners and dietitians with industry expertise provide students with insight into dietetic practice and career opportunities in the profession. Students also benefit from the extensive professional experience of nutrition and dietetic academic staff in a range of fields, including clinical dietetics, sports nutrition, the food industry, private practice and public health nutrition, as well as their national and international professional networks.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in relevant workshops offered by the Bond University Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice (CREBP), providing them access to highly qualified academics with international research track records, some of whom are responsible for developing global evidence-based nutrition guidelines.

Course detail

This postgraduate award in food business and management has been designed to produce graduates who are exceptionally well equipped with the aptitudes and competencies necessary to design, manage and lead developments within the food industry. This course will provide both a coherent programme of academic study and an in-depth educational experience focusing on the role of the manager and management issues within the international food industry, food service sectors, hospitality, and an exploration of cutting-edge food research.

This course takes an innovative approach, led by a multi-disciplinary team, that studies the food business sector ranging, from management theory and practice to food supply chain management. It embraces product innovation, within a social science perspective, whilst acknowledging the ethical and nutritional responsibility of business in modern society.

Internship

The Internship Course seeks to provide a 28 week period of paid work experience incorporated into the period of study. This makes it ideal for students seeking to add a practical dimension to their studies and understand the demands of workplace supervision and management. Internship opportunities exist throughout the food service industries both within the UK and overseas. The internship process is co-ordinated by the University's own dedicated internship team and draws upon contacts with the industry. The London School of Hospitality and Tourism generally has exceptionally good links with leading industrialists, many of whom are Patrons, Fellows and Alumni of the School.
