Course content

Today’s need for Internet security products and services, has led to a demand for people with relevant knowledge and expertise to design, implement and manage secure Internet applications. The MSc in Internet Technology and Security is designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills whilst providing the opportunity to become specialised in a field that is highly sought after.

While primarily having a technological focus, this pathway also provides an awareness of the business context, encourages development of interpersonal skills which can make a vital contribution to problem solving in business.

All modules are 20 credit modules except for the dissertation which is a 60 credit module. An MSc is awarded on successful completion of 180 credits (six 20 credit modules and one 60 credit dissertation module). Not all the designated modules may run or be offered in Stage two due to staff availability or low numbers of students choosing a module.

Methods of Learning

Theoretical lectures and seminars are reinforced by practical examples and case studies and using state of the art computer simulation tools and laboratory facilities.

Assessments

Assessment is by coursework, oral presentations, group work, practical reports, critical reviews and all students undertake a substantial independent research dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

You will have access to approximately 150 PC and Linux workstation computers housed in six bespoke computer laboratories, all with digital projection facilities, and maintained by two technicians. These facilities were brand new, state of the art hardware and furniture for the start of the calendar year 2010 in the newly refurbished Newton building.

The MSc in Telecommunications & Internet Technology aims to provide students with an appreciation of the evolution of mobile technology and Internet protocols together with a detailed understanding of the key technologies that will support the ecosystem of the future Internet. The programme provides a holistic view on the technologies and related architectural paradigms for the evolution of the Internet to the Mobile Internet. The key strength of the programme is the close link with the state-of-the-art research environment at the Centre for Telecommunications Research at King’s College London that provide a rich intellectual environment for students to achieve their goals and be highly competitive in their employability aspects.

In addition to the taught modules students are required to complete an individual project (and write a Thesis) to be eligible for the award of the MSc degree.

- Course purpose -

Undoubtedly, the growth of mobile and wireless communication systems and networks over the last few years has been explosive. Interestingly enough, this growth is taking place all over the world providing in both developed and developing countries. Therefore, in this very dynamic industry the prospects of personnel recruitment with well rounded knowledge are significant. The aim of the course is to provide the next generation of engineers that will manage and steer the developments in these new emerging Internet technologies.

International perspective

Technological developments generally cross borders, with the Internet perhaps the most obvious example. While internationalization offers opportunities and possibilities, it also gives rise to a host of issues from a regulatory perspective. The Law and Technology masters ensures you are well-prepared to operate in an international context by continuously applying an international perspective to the issues at hand.

No background in science or technology required

Prospective students do not require background knowledge in technology or science. Of more importance is your affinity with the social aspects of technology. Students with backgrounds in areas other than law can apply if at least 90 ECTS of the courses in their bachelors were similar to those of the bachelors at Tilburg Law School. A premaster program (currently only in Dutch) is available for students who do not meet this criteria.

Learning in the Law and Technology masters is interactive, informal and cross-cultural. You join an international student body, within which students regularly work in international teams, participate in discussions and present their ideas on legal concepts and issues. This programme is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). On successful graduation from this degree, the student will have fulfilled the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP) and partially fulfilled the education requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Chartered Scientist (CSci). For a full Chartered status there are additional requirements, including work experience. The programme also has accreditation from the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education (EQANIE).

Career options

Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be proficient in computer security and systems security and are in a position to follow careers in system development and administration where knowledge of security and forensics will be an asset or work in a range of specialist roles including: forensics investigators, security consultants or network management specialists.

Programme summary

There are a lot of new and existing global problems related to the availability and quality of water for personal, agricultural and industrial use. And these problems require sustainable solutions with a minimal impact on the environment. Water technology has unfortunately not been a focal point of most academic research and education programmes, despite its enormous importance to society. Instead, the expertise of various research groups is usually concentrated on other processes and in some cases, only later dedicated to water treatment in spin-off projects. New technologies will be necessary to develop new concepts for the treatment of waste water. And also for the production of clean water from alternative sources like salt (sea) water, waste water or humid air in order to minimise the use of precious groundwater. These challenges require academically trained experts who can think out-of-the-box and help to find practical solutions in the near future. A dedicated joint Master Water Technology programme has been created to train and educate these experts.

The MSc Water Technology is situated in Leeuwarden, the capital of water technology, and is offered jointly by three Dutch universities: Wageningen University, the University of Twente and the University of Groningen. A combined technological approach, based on state-of-the-art universities in science and technology, will search for solutions to several developments within business and society; with a worldwide impact on the demand for and use of water. One dedicated Master programme with joint degree allows for flexibility and can be adapted to the changing needs of the labour market. Wageningen University offers a strong focus on environmental sciences, the University of Twente on science and technology, and the University of Groningen on fundamental sciences. Students will be educated in the multidisciplinary laboratory of the technological top institute for water technology called Wetsus.

The MSc Water Technology programme specifically targets students interested in beta science and technology. The programme offers a unique combination of scientific insights and technological applications from the field of Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering. This combined approach for problem solving within the global framework of water problems is an asset to the programme. The programme is a valuable addition for postgraduate students with a completed bachelor degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology; or in related fields with a strong knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and/or biology, and with affinity of water processes. Students are challenged with examples and case studies of real (research) problems that they might encounter as water professionals.

Students apply for the MSc Water Technology programme at Wageningen University, but will be registered at the other two universities as well. They will have access to the facilities of all three universities. Upon the successful completion of the programme, students receive one joint degree MSc Water Technology issued by all participating universities.

Specialisations

There are no official specialisations within the programme Water Technology. Students specialise themselves by doing a thesis within one of the research fields. Some examples are: Priority compounds, Virus Control, Applied water physics, Desalination, Concentrates, Biofouling, Aquatic worms, Advanced waste water treatment, Algae, Separation at source, Resource recovery, Membrane processes and operation for wastewater treatment and reuse and Sensoring.

Your future career

This study domain is becoming more and more relevant due to the urgent need for new technologies to meet global water problems. Water technology for public drinking water production and sewage water treatment is a very large market. Furthermore, the largest use of fresh water is for irrigation purposes. The industrial water supply and industrial waste water treatment also represent a significant market. There is no question that businesses involved in water technology will grow tremendously. Besides this, human capital is a basic condition to guarantee the success and continuity of the development of sustainable technologies. In many EU countries, the lack of talented technological professionals is becoming an increasingly limiting factor. The programme prepares students for a professional position in the broad area of water technology. Graduates have good national and international career prospects in business and research.

The Wageningen Food Science faculty is larger than that of any other European university. Ingredient Functionality

Product Design
While many new products are launched, not all succeed. This specialisation deals with the design and development of new or improved products. The focus is on the processes used in Food Technology, the design of new products from a consumer perspective and on modelling new product concepts/processes and predictive quality control. You major in Food Process Engineering or Food Quality and Design.

Food Innovation and Management
This specialisation combines courses in Food Technology with courses in Management Studies. It is intended for students who wish to work on product development in small businesses or who plan to start their own business. You will do a thesis in Management Studies and an internship in one of the Food Technology groups.

Food Biotechnology and Biorefining
This specialisation focuses on using micro-organisms or enzymes in food production. During this specialisation, you will learn about processes that can be used for biorefinery or agricultural raw materials. The focus is on biotechnological food production. You major in Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Process Engineering.

Dairy Science and Technology
This specialisation focuses on the dairy production chain. Its core programme consists of dairy-related courses and several additional courses, such as Food Components and Health, Advanced Fermentation Science and Predicting Food Quality. During the second year, you complete a dairy-related thesis research project and internship.

Sustainable Food Process Engineering
This specialisation focuses on the development of processes that are more efficient in their use of resources. Thesis can be carried out under the supervision of one of the following groups: Food Process Engineering; Operations Research and Logistics; Biobased Chemistry and Technology; or Food Quality and Design.

European Masters Degree in Food Studies

Gastronomy
This specialisation focuses on the molecular science behind products and dishes used in small scale settings. Scientific insights are used to develop improved food preparation techniques. This specialisation combines Food Technology with Nutrition and Health. You will work with products and humans in different contexts and study how sensory systems function, how this relates to products and how to analyse these aspects.

Your future career

Graduates find jobs with relative ease, especially in the Netherlands and Western Europe. Recent graduates found positions in the private sector (from small- and medium-sized companies to large multinationals), at Wageningen University or other universities as PhD students, and at research institutes domestically and abroad. Malnutrition in Africa could be fought by enriching their daily porridge, sorghumpap, with protein-enhanced termites. As food ingredients technologist, it is possible to look beyond the products found on the shelves of the local supermarkets.”

This program was designed to be taken on its own, but students who successfully complete the program may have their credits applied to the Master of Arts in Learning and Technology degree.

The Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology is delivered as a blended program (incorporating online learning with an on-campus residency), as well as a purely online model.

Who It’s For

Instructors who work in or aspire to work in technology-mediated learning environments including K-12 education systems, post-secondary institutions, government departments, the corporate sector, and not-for-profit agencies. Delivery Model

The Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology is delivered as a blended program (incorporating online learning with an on-campus residency), as well as a purely online model.

Pre-Residency
Students begin the Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology program with a very short online pre-residency session that introduces them to the instructor, familiarizes them with the course content and materials, and connects them with other students in the program. This blended learning format allows students to benefit from the synergy of on-campus learning and direct interaction with leading faculty members, while still meeting the demands of career and lifestyle. The result is accessible, high quality learning with minimal professional disruption.

Residency
The 10-day residency is a carefully designed period of intense academic study in which students complete approximately 75 per cent of two courses – Learning Theory and Introduction to Research. The schedule of instruction and studying during the residency is structured to optimize the face-to-face access to instructors, develop networks with fellow students, and access the support services of the university if required. The typical daily schedule is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Team meetings, homework, and readings are done outside of these hours.

Online Learning
Distance courses are delivered entirely online through innovative, easy to use Internet technologies. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences.

Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. This varies from student to student and becomes easier as students familiarize themselves with Royal Roads University's distance learning technologies, and learn how to work effectively with team members in a virtual setting.

Learning and Teaching

The MSc in Internet Systems and e-Business is a full-time taught programme aimed at all graduates who want to train in modern computing. It provides an opportunity to acquire the skills required to pursue a career in Internet-based information systems. The programme is also suitable for those who have been in industry or other employment, possibly involving increasing recent work with IT, and now want to improve their career by means of formal training and a recognised qualification. Students are registered for 12 months from the course start date at the beginning of October each academic year. The programme starts with an introduction to programming and then covers key details of software engineering and Internet technology.

The programme consists of seven lecture/tutorial based core modules plus a research project. The two modules in Object Oriented Programming, and Web Technology, each feature 18 hours of lectures plus 8 hours of tutorial contact time.

The three modules in Digital Imaging, Distributed Computing and Research Methods and Professional Issues each feature 12 hours of lectures plus 8 hours of tutorial contact time. The lecture module on Software Engineering for the Internet has 20 hours of tutorials. The lecture module on Enterprise and Distributed Systems use a variety of teaching methods. It might typically feature 24 hours of lectures, 8 hours of tutorials and a total of 91 hours of laboratory/practical classes. The total contact hours for all 7 of these modules is therefore 96 hours of lectures, 68 hours of tutorials and 91 hours of laboratory/practical classes.

A major individual research project is also undertaken during the course under the guidance of an appropriate staff supervisor. This provides an open-ended challenge to each individual student. Regular meetings are held with the supervisor to discuss project progress and planning issues. At the end of the project students are required to submit a dissertation documenting their project work. Students should expect to have around 5 hours of contact time with their supervisors over the course of their research projects.

The program will be of interest to educators at all levels, including K-12 teachers, school administrators, those in the post-secondary system, business and industry, as well as those in most other adult learning situations. While the co-operatively-offered degree may be awarded at convocation at either CBU or MUN, the degree is conferred by MUN.

Rationale and Goals

The graduate programme in Information Technology is offered in partnership with the Cape Breton University (CBU). It is designed to facilitate the educational use of information technology in a wide variety of settings. The programme will be of interest to educators at all levels including K-12 teachers, school administrators, those in the post-secondary system, business and industry, as well as those in most other adult learning situations.

Information technology in this Master of Education programme encompasses computer, communications, networking and multi-media applications. The overall intent of the programme is to:
-Provide educators with skill sets and pedagogical expertise that will enable them to address computer and related information technology in a teaching/learning situation.
-Develop potential information technology leaders for the educational system.
-Develop instructional designers, for a variety of educational settings, who are able to combine information technology with learning theory to enhance curriculum development and delivery.
-Provide a basis for the continued professional development of educators in the area of information technology.
-Develop an awareness of the applications of information technology in a wide variety of educational contexts.
-Develop research expertise and potential in the use and application of information technology for teaching and learning purposes.

Candidates for the programme will have attained, prior to acceptance, some fundamental knowledge and skills with respect to information technology through prerequisite experiences, and have attained a recognised undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline with at least a second class standing (see specific regulations for details). The programme components are designed to enable candidates to build on their prior experience through the development of pedagogical links and information technology applications. It is intended that the programme be offered primarily as a part-time programme through distance delivered courses, with other delivery formats to be considered/utilised where feasible. Access to specific computer hardware, software, and the internet is required and will be the responsibility of each candidate.
