Course content

Today’s need for Internet security products and services, has led to a demand for people with relevant knowledge and expertise to design, implement and manage secure Internet applications. The MSc in Internet Technology and Security is designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills whilst providing the opportunity to become specialised in a field that is highly sought after.

While primarily having a technological focus, this pathway also provides an awareness of the business context, encourages development of interpersonal skills which can make a vital contribution to problem solving in business.

All modules are 20 credit modules except for the dissertation which is a 60 credit module. An MSc is awarded on successful completion of 180 credits (six 20 credit modules and one 60 credit dissertation module). Not all the designated modules may run or be offered in Stage two due to staff availability or low numbers of students choosing a module.

Methods of Learning

Theoretical lectures and seminars are reinforced by practical examples and case studies and using state of the art computer simulation tools and laboratory facilities.

Assessments

Assessment is by coursework, oral presentations, group work, practical reports, critical reviews and all students undertake a substantial independent research dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

You will have access to approximately 150 PC and Linux workstation computers housed in six bespoke computer laboratories, all with digital projection facilities, and maintained by two technicians. These facilities were brand new, state of the art hardware and furniture for the start of the calendar year 2010 in the newly refurbished Newton building.

Careers

Recent studies show a continuing demand for well trained computing personnel. Successful graduates will have a whole range of possible employment paths in front of them within the broad IT/computing domain.

Network and hardware

We have our own high-performance network so you can access our advanced computing facilities. There are labs for teaching smaller groups, wi-fi coverage throughout the department, and you can connect your own laptop to the network. Mobile devices and tablets are available for you to borrow for project work.

We also use specialised equipment: an immersive virtual reality facility, robotics hardware and an acoustic booth for speech processing research.

Course purpose

Undoubtedly, the growth of mobile and wireless communication systems and networks over the last few years has been explosive. Interestingly enough, this growth is taking place all over the world in both developed and developing countries. Therefore, in this very dynamic industry the prospects of employment are significant for graduates with well-rounded knowledge of this field. The aim of the programme is to provide the next generation of engineers that will manage and steer the developments in these new emerging Internet technologies. 

Course format and assessment

We use lectures, seminars and group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the programme. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study.

You are expected to spend approximately 150 hours of effort (i.e. about 10 hours per credit) for each module you attend in your degree. These 150 hours cover every aspect of the module: lectures, tutorials, lab-based exercises, independent study based on personal and provided lecture notes, tutorial preparation and completion of exercises, coursework preparation and submission, examination revision and preparation, and examinations.

 Assessment methods will depend on the modules selected. The primary methods of assessment for this course are written examinations and coursework. You may also be assessed by class tests, essays, assessment reports and oral presentations.

Career destinations

Re-engineering the Internet towards its evolution to the Wireless Internet is the current driver of research efforts in both academia and research and development sectors in industry. Graduates from our programme will be very well placed to proceed into employment in both mobile network operators and industrial manufacturers of mobile/wireless network equipment. International perspective

Technological developments generally cross borders, with the Internet perhaps the most obvious example. While internationalization offers opportunities and possibilities, it also gives rise to a host of issues from a regulatory perspective. The Law and Technology masters ensures you are well-prepared to operate in an international context by continuously applying an international perspective to the issues at hand.

No background in science or technology required

Prospective students do not require background knowledge in technology or science. Of more importance is your affinity with the social aspects of technology. Students with backgrounds in areas other than law can apply if at least 90 ECTS of the courses in their bachelors were similar to those of the bachelors at Tilburg Law School. A premaster program (currently only in Dutch) is available for students who do not meet this criteria.

Learning in the Law and Technology masters is interactive, informal and cross-cultural. You join an international student body, within which students regularly work in international teams, participate in discussions and present their ideas on legal concepts and issues. For a full Chartered status there are additional requirements, including work experience. The programme also has accreditation from the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education (EQANIE).
