Programme Aims

Programme Structure

To complete the MSc Internet Technologies with Business students must complete 8 x 15 credit modules. Students must choose and complete 2 of the Glendonbrook optional modules and 3 of the Digital Technologies optional modules to complete the MSc Internet Technologies with Business. 2 of these modules must be completed in semester 1 and 3 in semester 2. All students must complete a Dissertation worth 60 credits.

ASSESSMENT

Modules are assessed primarily by exams and also include a combination of group exercises, presentations and time-constrained coursework and assignments with varying levels of weighting depending on the nature of each module.

How you will be assessed

The taught modules are assessed by continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. The project is assessed by dissertation.

Coursework is often very practical, eg writing computer programs, designing interfaces, writing reports, constructing web sites, testing software, implementing databases, analysing problems or presenting solutions to clients.

Learning and Teaching

The MSc in Internet Systems and e-Business is a full-time taught programme aimed at all graduates who want to train in modern computing. It provides an opportunity to acquire the skills required to pursue a career in Internet-based information systems. The programme is also suitable for those who have been in industry or other employment, possibly involving increasing recent work with IT, and now want to improve their career by means of formal training and a recognised qualification. Students are registered for 12 months from the course start date at the beginning of October each academic year. The programme starts with an introduction to programming and then covers key details of software engineering and Internet technology.

The programme consists of seven lecture/tutorial based core modules plus a research project. The two modules in Object Oriented Programming, and Web Technology, each feature 18 hours of lectures plus 8 hours of tutorial contact time.

The three modules in Digital Imaging, Distributed Computing and Research Methods and Professional Issues each feature 12 hours of lectures plus 8 hours of tutorial contact time. The lecture module on Software Engineering for the Internet has 20 hours of tutorials. The lecture module on Enterprise and Distributed Systems use a variety of teaching methods. It might typically feature 24 hours of lectures, 8 hours of tutorials and a total of 91 hours of laboratory/practical classes. The total contact hours for all 7 of these modules is therefore 96 hours of lectures, 68 hours of tutorials and 91 hours of laboratory/practical classes.

A major individual research project is also undertaken during the course under the guidance of an appropriate staff supervisor. This provides an open-ended challenge to each individual student. Regular meetings are held with the supervisor to discuss project progress and planning issues. At the end of the project students are required to submit a dissertation documenting their project work. Students should expect to have around 5 hours of contact time with their supervisors over the course of their research projects.

Module delivery

Full-time MSc programmes are of 12 months duration. Modules are based over two 15 week semesters with the rest of the 12 months spent on a guided personal research project. Many of our students undertake industry-oriented projects.

The intensive 2-3 week module teaching structure may appeal to those in employment who wish to study on a part-time basis. To maintain the relevance of previous study, part-time students are recommended to complete the programme in as short a time as possible, although up to seven years is permitted for the MSc.

Modules listed are correct at the time of publication, however, we continually review content, so modules may change.

Assessment

Taught modules, with a total modular weight of 120 credits, assessed by coursework and in-class tests. Project: 60 credits.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be made based on your laboratory report of 2,500 words for each module and on your individual 20 page journal-style dissertation paper based on the final project. There are no examinations. Some dissertations may involve work with industry, or with other Departments within the University.

Some modules may involve group or team work when a single laboratory assignment report from the team will be required.

What does the course consist of?

The course is built from eight taught modules plus one project module. Each of the eight modules lasts for approximately four weeks and consists of a combination of lectures, tutorials, private study and a mini project. Each of the modules is designed to build upon the student's growing knowledge and skills.

A first of its kind, this new MA in Film Curating explores both the traditional and the rapidly changing ways in which films are programmed by curators and received by spectators. In film exhibition today, the old and the new coexist: audiences still watch films in cinemas, but digital technology and the internet have multiplied ways of consuming moving images. Digital technology has also transformed the relationship between film and art: galleries and museums now routinely exhibit film in shows and installations. Film festivals are flourishing in new formats and locations as never before. These changes have profoundly affected practices of curating and programming.

This intensive (1-year, full-time) MA includes in its curriculum: the old and the new aspects of programming and curating; theoretical considerations of audience; spectatorship and reception; and the changing spaces and temporalities of film exhibition. The MA combines these strong critical, theoretical and academic foundations with site visits and internships in London galleries and exhibition spaces, as well as screenings and programming in the Birkbeck Cinema. Students will be taught by internationally distinguished academics and cultural practitioners such as Professor Laura Mulvey. Lectures from industry professionals and experienced curators provide a first step towards possible careers in art and film or for further research into the cultures of curating.

It includes an understanding of system administration and security, distributed programming, contemporary software technologies and a critical understanding of enterprise architectures, frameworks and strategies for building internet-enabled enterprise systems.
