The current economic situation is marked by a serious crisis and affects all levels of our lives, either within a social perspective as well as from an entrepreneurial and political point of view. The historical period we live in will be certainly remembered for a long time, partly for being longer than the initial 2007 predictions, and partly for the seriousness of the recession itself. Within this context and at a company level, immobility becomes incompatible with survival.

Foreign Trade is one of the ways out. Out of the few companies that are getting around the crisis, many of them feature a greater international orientation, this decision being made a long time ago, when the economy worked differently.

Unluckily, and right when it is mostly needed, not all companies are ready to face the global market, and the challenges come at the worst possible time in terms of investing capacity, among other critical aspects. Within this context, inexperience also plays against it, and this natural uncertainty that is affecting quality in such a complex way does not help decision-making processes.

Regardless, Foreign Trade presence is no longer an option and rather becomes an obligation. Globalization being the reason behind it. Hence it is time to take a further step and open up to foreign trade if we want to have a future at an entrepreneurial level.

How do you start, though? How to acquire strength? What are the risks and how to deal with them? The Master in Internationalization of Companies and Access to New Markets has been set up to be a contribution, a set path and a turning point to all those entrepreneurs and professionals who have to find answers to such questions as well as having to make decisions within the exercise of their responsibilities.

The Master in Internationalization of Companies and Access to New Markets will provide you with the necessary tools to implement nationalization in your own company. The target of such program is:

To step up company internationalization and to promote foreign trade activities.
To develop a wide perspective and comprehension framework of all the aspects integrating entrepreneurial relations at an international level.
To provide professionals and companies with practical and useful tools and guidelines, from both a strategic and operational point of view, aimed at managing the internationalization challenge in a secure and successful way.

ECTS Educational System

The Master in Internationalization of Companies and Access to New Markets is regulated by the European Credit Transfer System, a system which measures and values the required work to be done by the students in order to acquire all the necessary competences, knowledge, and skills to overcome the different subjects of the Master.

This master has a total of 60 ECTS, equivalent to 1500 hours of student involvement of which 15 ECTS correspond to the completion of the final Master project.

Methodology of the Master

The methodology of the Master in Internationalization of Companies and Access to New Markets is based on active participation of students in many activities, such as analysis and resolution of real business experiences and case studies. Therefore our methodology is based on “learning by doing”, relying on software tools and Simulation Systems Business.

Companies tend to employ graduates who have developed awareness to issues of internationalization, who are competent to work in multinational working groups, who can analyze international markets, and those who can develop major projects. The International Management, Legislation and Society program aims to give students an education that enables them to adapt quickly to an international environment, whilst understanding the dynamics, and knowing how to effectively identify solutions to managerial problems.

Learning objectives

The curriculum presents two types of courses: subjects relating to the basic disciplines (business, economic, and law), and subjects relating to business issues and problems typically associated with the processes of internationalization of firms. This is done to balance traditional knowledge of management with the specialization and the development of specific internationalization-oriented skills. In addition to traditional business disciplines, there are courses that intend to develop the capability to work in different social and cultural contexts, and to review, develop and implement internationalization of firms.

Career opportunities & professional recognition

Graduates from the International Management, Legislation & Society program are exposed to a wide range of career opportunities. Why do languages change? Why does your mobile device suggest funny completions for words you are typing? How did it happen that Finnish is spoken mostly in Finland, but its linguistic relatives are scattered over a larger area? How can you study a language that does not have a standard orthography? Why can you sometimes tell where other people come from just by their accent? Why do some people stick to their dialect, but others give it up when they move to the city? Should you try to support language diversity? Can we save languages that are spoken by a very small number of people? How can computer-synthesised speech be made to sound more human? Why do some languages seem so much more difficult to learn - are they inherently more complex?

This Master's programme will provide you with an understanding of the nature and diversity of human language and with the theoretical tools for working with language material. If you are interested in languages but are unable to decide which of them you want to study, this Master's programme offers several fields of specialisation. One of them might be just perfect for you.

During your studies, you will:
-Gain an in-depth understanding of the basic structure of language, its subsystems (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics) and their mutual relationships.
-Learn the fundamentals of linguistic analysis and language description.
-Familiarize yourself with linguistic concepts, theories, descriptive models and the associated research methods.

Programme Contents

Linguistic Diversity in the Digital Age is an integrated international programme that offers you a comprehensive view of all subfields of the science of language. As a student in the programme you will be able to choose among four specialist options: (1) General Linguistics, (2) Phonetics, (3) Language Technology, and (4) Diversity Linguistics.

General Linguistics
Gives you comprehensive in-depth training in a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches to language structure and language in use. Special emphasis is put on language typology in a global perspective as well as the documentation and description of endangered and previously undocumented and under-documented forms of speech.

Phonetics
Introduces you to the tools for working with the articulatory, acoustic and perceptional aspects of human speech from a multidisciplinary perspective. At the more advanced level, you will become acquainted with the methods of experimental phonetics.

Language Technology
Combines linguistics with digital technology in an interdisciplinary approach with close links to computer science. The focus areas include natural language processing (NLP) for morphologically rich languages, cross-lingual NLP and language technology in the humanities.

Diversity Linguistics
Encompasses all aspects of linguistic diversity in time and space, including historical linguistics as well as the extralinguistic context of languages: ethnicities, cultures and environ­ments. The areal foci in Diversity Linguistics are Eurasia and Africa.

These four specialist options interact at all levels. There is a study module common to all students in the programme regardless of the specialist option they choose. The integration of these four perspectives into one programme is unique - no similar programme exists anywhere else.

In the context of “Humanities”, the programme has the closest relationship to natural sciences, and many subfields of the programme involve methods directly linked to laboratory sciences, including digital technology and neurosciences.

The teaching in the programme includes lectures and seminars, practical exercise sessions, reading circles, fieldwork excursions, as well as work practice (internship). The broad spectrum of teaching methods guarantees optimal support for your learning processes.

Programme Structure

The scope of the Master of Arts degree is 120 credits. The degree contains the following studies:
-Studies common to all students in the programme (30 credits)
-Advanced studies in the specialist option (at least 60 credits)
-Other studies (up to 30 credits)

The target duration of full-time studies leading to an MA degree is two years.

All students in the programme take the same courses during the autumn semester of the first year.

Then you will focus on your specialist option (general linguistics, phonetics, language technology, or diversity linguistics). This block of studies consists of courses (at least 30 credits) and of the final project, which is your Master's thesis (30 credits).

Additionally, you choose other studies: modules offered either by the other specialist options within this Master's programme or by other programmes within the University of Helsinki. The size of such optional study modules is typically 15, 25 or 30 credits. Courses offered by other universities can also be included here.

The studies in your own specialist option as well as the other studies may also include an internationalization period (e.g. student exchange) and work practice or other working life oriented study units. Working life and career development perspectives are integrated in many courses in the programme.

You will complete your studies systematically. At the beginning of your Master’s studies, you will prepare your first personal study plan (PSP). In this, you will receive support especially from the staff of the Master's programme. Guidance is also given at the Faculty level.

Career Prospects

After graduation, students of the programme find employment in a wide variety of positions, in which special knowledge of language is required.

One path prepares you for a research career, and many graduates work as researchers in Finland and abroad. You can also work in the political, diplomatic, and educational sectors, as well as research administration. Further potential employers are found in the publishing industry, media and journalism, public relations and communications of business and public administration, as well as NGOs.

If you choose a technological orientation, you may work in language technology firms or more generally in the IT sector. Big international companies are in constant need of experts in speech and language technology. Additionally, there is a vibrant field of domestic companies, some established ones and many promising start-ups. Some students have founded their own companies and become entrepreneurs.

Note that it is not possible to graduate as a (subject) teacher in the LingDA Master's programme.

Internationalization

Linguistics is by definition an international field. Language capacity is a feature common to all human beings, and the objective of linguistics as a science is to study both the universal background of language as a phenomenon and the global diversity of languages as expressions of social and cultural heritage.

In the LingDA programme, internationalization is present in several forms and at several levels:
-The programme functions in English and accepts international students from all countries.
-The programme recruits students representing a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
-The students are encouraged to study and master many languages from both the practical and the theoretical points of view.
-The students are encouraged early on to get engaged in documentational and typological field work among speakers of little documented languages in various parts of the world.
-The students are encouraged to use the opportunities of international exchange that the university offers.

The programme has a high international profile and all teachers have wide international contact networks. At the university of Helsinki, linguistics was internationalized as early as the 19th century. Finland is a country where, in particular, ethnolinguistics and field linguistics were developed and practised much earlier than in most other European countries. Some of the regions where Finnish ethnolinguists have been active include North and Central Eurasia, the Near and Middle East, East Asia, South Asia, and Africa. This tradition of field-work-oriented linguistics is today carried on by the HALS (Helsinki Area and Linguistic Studies) research community. At the same time, the more recent fields of linguistics, including phonetics, language technology, and typology, have developed their own international profiles.

Research Focus

The MA programme Diversity Linguistics in the Digital Age combines several research fields in which the University of Helsinki has long been a global leader. Language research in Helsinki has always maintained its strong commitment to a better understanding of cultural areas and their history. Situated in an ideal place for the study of language history and contact linguistics of various Eurasian language families, the study of Uralic languages has a long tradition in Helsinki. Our interest in the culturally and historically informed study of language reaches well beyond that, though, spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.

Our language research is empirically driven and informed by linguistic typology. The question of linguistic complexity, its significance for language and cultural history, and its intersection with ecological models is a hallmark of the Helsinki School of Linguistics. We explore new horizons in area and language studies by combining cutting edge research in linguistic typology with field work based descriptive linguistics and linguistic anthropology.

A unique asset at the University of Helsinki is the presence of various language technology initiatives at the forefront of the digital humanities. The study of morphologically complex languages plays a great role here, and special attention is paid to lesser researched languages.

Each of the four study lines of our MA programme thus corresponds to a University of Helsinki focus area. Our language-related research is typically multidisciplinary and involves more than one linguistic specialty. This is also a crucial feature in our MA programme. Final project

Throughout the International Master in e-Supply Chain Management, you will develop all your skills and competencies, especially your entrepreneurial sense, since you will be required to develop an International Business Operation Plan during the master, which will have to be viable in the current market. The International Business Operation Plan will be developed in work teams.
Therefore, our goal is that as you go through the master you could be able to consolidate the knowledge learned in your project. Along the master there are three mentoring sessions held by experts, who provide guidance and support to project development.
Finally, at the end of the master each team will make a presentation of their project in front of a panel of specialists and experts, who will evaluate them.

Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences.

Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. Format

This course uses a range of teaching and learning settings including lectures, seminars/workshops, tutorials, situated learning (e.g. ‘live’ projects) and independent learning. The process of Masters level study, relating to an individual and independent arts practice, is one of dense critical self-reflection; this is achieved by including self-directed projects where students have the opportunity to negotiate their learning and assessment requirements.

The majority of our graduates continue with their creative careers. Graduates are particularly visible in the region – in group studios, exhibitions or events. Many graduates support their practice via teaching or demonstrator roles in further or higher education establishments. A number of graduates find work with museums or galleries. Our graduates are particularly proactive in initiating art-based projects – establishing new venues and curating group exhibitions, for example. A number are successful each year in securing artist residencies at home and abroad. Curriculum Studies includes, but is not limited to investigations into: teacher education, the social construction or knowledge, curriculum and instructional discourses, and the role of curriculum and curricular reform in K–12 and other learning environments. Students learn about issues of planning and development, program implementation and evaluation, and pre-service teacher education. Inquiry in the field is multidisciplinary and includes numerous perspectives and orientations such as: cultural studies, historical consciousness, post structuralism, feminism, multicultural education, semiotics, and critical theory. International faculty and graduate students interested in curriculum theory are actively involved in the Centre for the Study of the Internationalization of Curriculum Studies .

The MA programs require 30 credits, or a 9-credit research thesis and 21 course credits. The MEd programs require 30 credits, or typically 9 courses plus a graduating paper (for TQS certification in British Columbia). A minimum of 24 credits must be in graduate-level courses (including the 9-credit MA thesis or 3-credit MEd graduating paper) for all master’s programs. All on-campus master’s programs in the Department can be pursued either full time or part time. Theses and graduating papers often focus on questions or issues that cut across disciplines and professional fields. This year there are approximately 300 students studying in the department’s various graduate programs.

The MEd degree is designed primarily for students wishing to pursue professional study in education or to prepare for positions of leadership in varied settings and is often the choice of professionals who want to reflect on issues of practice with colleagues through a breadth and depth of courses. The MA degree is particularly recommended for students who may wish to pursue a doctorate at a later date, although the MEd does not preclude application to advanced study.

International perspective

Technological developments generally cross borders, with the Internet perhaps the most obvious example. The Law and Technology masters ensures you are well-prepared to operate in an international context by continuously applying an international perspective to the issues at hand.

No background in science or technology required

Prospective students do not require background knowledge in technology or science. Of more importance is your affinity with the social aspects of technology. Students with backgrounds in areas other than law can apply if at least 90 ECTS of the courses in their bachelors were similar to those of the bachelors at Tilburg Law School. A premaster program (currently only in Dutch) is available for students who do not meet this criteria.

Interactive and close-knit learning environment

Learning in the Law and Technology masters is interactive, informal and cross-cultural. You join an international student body, within which students regularly work in international teams, participate in discussions and present their ideas on legal concepts and issues. The program is designed to mold top talents for leadership positions in Europe and Asia. It addresses especially young professionals with a first degree in engineering, social or natural sciences and at least one year of professional work experience.

The richness of the program is based on the unique concept of combining a foundation in the core business disciplines with a focus on either European or Asian business. The curriculum comprises six core modules that will provide you with a general management perspective on business functions and how they can be integrated with a rapidly changing global economy, and two modules in the area specialization “Europe” or “Asia”. Additionally, two elective modules will give you the opportunity to tailor the program to your individual career objectives or organizational interests prior to the final Master Thesis. The program is accompanied by company visits, guest lectures, career counseling and personal mentoring.

Course Content

Module 1, International Communication Skills, aims to equip students with a deepened understanding of the importance of culture and trains students’ cross-cultural competences. Students are further introduced to communication and presentation techniques essential in today’s business.

Module 2, People and Management, deals with differences in work behavior determined by culture, explains how business decisions are influenced by the culture of a respective country, and enables students to develop their understanding of key issues of managing human resources in a global context.

Module 3, Finance and Accounting, addresses financial markets, trade financing, financial control of multinational companies, assessment of investments and risks, capital costs and risks in foreign trade, and is concerned with modern controlling concepts and instruments.

Module 4, Global Business Knowledge, provides learners with a deepened knowledge of internationalization strategies of companies, concepts and instruments of strategic management, and a systematic knowledge in marketing research methods in a global context.

Module 5, Area Specialization I, depending on the chosen focus (Asia or Europe), the module provides an introduction to the economic, political and social conditions of doing business in Asia or Europe.

Module 6, International Business Law and Taxation, introduces basic principles of international business law and addresses the purpose, kinds, regulation and use of taxation in international business.

Module 7, International Project Management, addresses fundamental principles of Project Management, its possible fields of application and its relevance for process optimization of a global value chain.

Module 8, Area Specialization II, is taught to the students based on module 5 and, depending on the focus choice, offers an understanding of the Asian or European economic and business fundamentals.

In modules 9, Topical Specialization I, and 10, Topical Specialization II, students can choose a topical specialization. Currently three topics are offered: International Tourism Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship. Depending on students’ interests more options can be offered from the Master portfolio of the School of International Business.

The Master Thesis Seminar introduces students to academic writing and prepares them specifically for the Master Thesis. It covers the standards in preparing scientific papers, the function of a master thesis, possible cooperation with companies, methods for literature search, and the rules of plagiarism.
In the Master Thesis students have to deal intensively with a research project or case study and put it in writing in the form of a scientific paper.

Students can attend an optional 22-week internship (also in combination with the master thesis) after the completion of the first 10 modules. If it is a professionally relevant internship and includes a written scientific internship report (15-20 pages), students can obtain 30 ECTS credits.
