As the growth rate of emerging economies doubles that of advanced economies in the years leading to 2030, sustainable tourism plays a significant role in the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

This course meets the growing demand for specialists in tourism planning, marketing and industry management who not only have a broad and deep understanding of global business activity, but also a clear insight into the consequences of planning and policymaking on the environment, society, culture and the economy.

In this industry-focussed course you will explore sustainable organisations across urban and rural development and regeneration; natural resource management and wildlife conservation; and the diversifying benefits from international and domestic tourism. You will gain enhanced practical and analytical skills to develop tourism policies and practices built on sustainable practice in a global setting.

Our academic staff are widely regarded as research pioneers in the field of high-yield, independent (or backpacker) travel, and the associated impacts on urban tourism and the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises.

To broaden your understanding of the international market and the role that a sustainable tourism industry can play in emerging economies, study overseas. You can attend a partially funded intensive field school to examine the patterns of development within an Asia-Pacific emerging economy, such as Fiji, Vietnam or Cambodia. Or you can participate in an international student exchange semester at one of our prestigious partner universities in Sweden, Estonia or Latvia.

Graduates are employed in a variety of government and private-sector tourism organisations: state, regional and national tourism offices; management consultancy firms; advertising agencies; media and TV research and journalism; internet communication organisations; local government tourism agencies; international education organisations; and airline and tour operators.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Foundations for international sustainable tourism management studies, Part B. Core Master's study and Part C. Advanced expertise. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

[Note that if you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit.]

PART A. Foundations for international sustainable tourism management studies
These studies will introduce you to international sustainable tourism studies at advanced undergraduate or graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field. .

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of the tourism industry, policy governance and research, to develop a critical understanding of the relationships between tourism and sustainable development with a particular emphasis on emerging economies and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises within them.

PART C. Advanced expertise
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options.

The first option is a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests. This option includes the opportunity to undertake an internship in the field.

The second option is a 24 point research thesis. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this second option.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator

This programme provides a sound foundation in business and management principles and the development of specific specialist tourism skills and knowledge that are essential for a successful career in tourism management today. The programme includes an optional placement with a tourism business or a tourism organisation, to provide students with an opportunity to gain professional experience in various aspects of tourism management, which is increasingly becoming a key requirement in the tourism employment market. HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

The MSc International Tourism Management course focuses on strategic decision making in relation to tourism operations, tourism marketing and strategic tourism management. As well as traditional teaching and learning methods such as lectures and seminars, specific subjects adopt a mix of experiential approaches to facilitate the achievement of richer, deeper, and critical learning.

The course has an international focus, and all modules are applied to an international context, incorporating international case studies and in-depth examples. Course Overview

The MA International Tourism Management programme is available as a full or part time campus based programme as well as a part-time online programme. In part one of the programme students will study a number of modules which will enable them to gain a systematic understanding of the nature and development of tourism and destinations, marketing and management.

Tourism specific modules will initiate discussion about the development of places as sustainable destinations, destination management, place image, socio-cultural, environmental, economic and political impacts of tourism and the potential of sustainable approaches to tourism development.

Additionally, students will also develop an understanding of management principles and marketing applied to the tourism context and will engage in critical thinking about contemporary global issues which form the backdrop to the discipline. In part two of the programme, students can elect to undertake a dissertation, integrated case study or business development proposal. Exit awards also include Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.

This programme is designed to deliver a substantial theoretical and practical understanding of the role and contribution of the tourism industry in the context of international development. You will gain the skills required to manage sustainable tourism businesses, alongside the specialisms of strategic destination management and marketing. You will explore tourism’s relationship with the socio-economic and political contexts within international development, tourism disasters affecting tourist destinations, and the role of tourism in the development of countries that have experienced conflict. An emphasis upon the micro-economic contribution of enterprise projects to support development and sustainability also features within the curriculum; delivered through the Ashoka Changemaker philosophy.

Upon completion of the programme, you may wish to progress your studies through a doctoral qualification.

Course content

The programme encourages you to analyse and evaluate the relationship between sustainable development principles and the management of destinations to achieve long-term viability of resources; and the role of event tourism in destination development as a catalyst for physical, economic and socio-cultural regeneration. In addition, the programme provides insight into the political economies surrounding development and the contribution that tourism makes to a destination’s risk mitigation, social renewal and recovery after disasters and post conflict scenarios.

Drawing on a variety of case studies and projects, the programme explores the global scope of tourism, the policies and strategies associated with successful management, the role the industry plays in international development, and the stakeholders involved in its development. The programme will also prepare students for the practical, project based, and customer focused characteristics of the tourism industry.

Semester 1

From the beginning of the programme, you will be introduced to some of the main themes in destination and tourism management, to enable you to analyse the strategic and dynamic nature of international tourist destinations and issues facing managers of such destinations. Modules in semester one will highlight the need to ensure long-term viability of destination resources through themes such as sustainable development and political economies of international development.

Semester 2

You will examine the vulnerability of destinations and the strategies and approaches needed by managers to develop and recover, particularly post-conflict. The strategic use of events in both the public and private sectors will be examined, particularly their use as a catalyst for physical, economic and socio-cultural regeneration. There is a strong emphasis on developing personal adaptability in cross cultural (work) environments as Master graduates can be expected to, and will have the expectation to – lead and manage other people internationally. You will also begin to prepare for the completion of a dissertation through a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced.

Semester 3

The research proposal produced in Semester two will guide the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000 word research report (dissertation) is produced, with the support of a dissertation supervisor.

Opportunities Abroad

In previous years students have participated in an optional study trip to an international destination. The cost of this optional trip would not normally exceed £500 for flights and accommodation. Students normally allow an additional £100 for their expenses.

The programme team also aims to provide a regional or national study trip annually to a tourism attraction or exhibition. In some cases students are required to contribute to the cost of entry; this would normally not exceed £50.00.

Methods of Learning

Typically you will have nine hours (approximately) of contact time with your tutor in the first semester and eleven hours (approximately) in the second. Overall you will spend 108 hours per module in self-directed study (reading and research).

Assessments

A variety of individual and group based assessments are used including reports, presentations, posters, e-portfolios, projects, client briefs, multiple choice tests and examinations.

The International Tourism Management programme will equip you with the skills and insights required to work in the diverse and dynamic tourism sector. Our stimulating and challenging programme takes a broad approach to understanding tourism and its relationships with the economy, environment and society, within a broad business-based curriculum.

Our curriculum is international in scope and you will develop an ability to think critically about the relationship between tourism and management in a range of contexts and across a range of functions e.g. marketing, business evaluation, strategy and applied research.

Throughout our MSc, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability which positions people and the environment at the centre of tourism development. The programme is delivered by a world-class team, highly respected for tourism research, consultancy and leading academic publications.

Our dissertation module is the flagship of our programme, where you get to demonstrate and apply all the knowledge and skills you have acquired to study a contemporary tourism management issue of your choice. We encourage students to pick a dissertation subject that not only interests them, but is directly related to the kind of employment they are looking to secure following their graduation. Added to that, you can opt for our Work Based Learning module which allows students to work with a tourism business client in a consultancy role.

By the end of the programme you will have the knowledge to understand and critically evaluate theories at the cutting edge of tourism research alongside data analysis skills that will enable you to predict the changing patterns of tourism demand and tourist behaviour. Graduates from the MSc International Tourism Management are well placed to find positions with international tourism corporations and businesses as destination managers and marketers, consultants, hotel and event managers as well as tourism development, planning and impact assessment roles in the private and public sectors.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our MSc International Tourism Marketing programme trains you in the necessary practical and analytical skills required to pursue a career in the public and private tourism sectors.

The programme modules explore established concepts and systems underlying marketing processes, as well as current specialist issues in tourism and marketing in the digital age.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme is designed to provide students with the essentials of a sound underpinning in tourism marketing. The programme takes an international perspective and an integrated approach.

It provides students with opportunities to be at the forefront of the latest tourism marketing thinking and practice. It aims to develop students’ relevant skills to study customers and the environment in which tourism marketing is conducted, to communicate effectively with the other departments within organisations and to formulate plans that are appropriate for specific tourism products.

The programme provides students with opportunities to work directly with industry partners through not only guest lectures, but also on a real tourism project through the Applied Dissertation initiative and during fieldtrips.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and understanding
-A systematic, in-depth understanding of the development, issues and influences relevant to tourism marketing
-A high level of theoretical and applied knowledge of the management operation, organisation and provision of business or service sector education
-An understanding of the research process

Intellectual / cognitive skills
-Independently critically evaluate approaches and techniques relevant to tourism marketing
-Evaluate outcomes and accurately assess/report on own/others’ work with justification and relate them to existing knowledge structures and methodologies
-Demonstrate high level learning and problem solving abilities in the range of modules studied

Professional practical skills
-Analyse and synthesise issues related to tourism marketing. Other skills developed include communication and presentation skills, computing skills, critical reasoning, data analysis, organisation and planning, report and essay writing skills, problem solving skills, interactive and group skills, and research skills
-Evaluate the ethical dilemmas likely to arise in research and professional practice, and to formulate solutions in dialogue with peers, clients, mentors, supervisors and others

Key / transferable skills
-How to identify modifications to existing knowledge structures and theoretical frameworks and therefore to propose new areas for investigation, new problems, new or alternative applications or methodological approaches
-How to conduct research and produce a high quality reports: this includes the ability to select, define and focus upon an issue at an appropriate level; to develop and apply relevant and sound methodologies; to analyse the issue; to develop recommendations and logical conclusions; to be aware of the limitations of the research work
-A range of generic skills relevant to the needs of existing and future managers, executives and professionals, irrespective of their sector of operation.
