There is a dual focus on the marketing of sport and marketing through sport, with sports marketing being examined from the perspective of both rights holders (sports organisations) and sponsors. FURTHER INFORMATION

Sport is now a multi-billion dollar global industry and the content of the taught modules is reflective of the global context in which sports organisations operate, with use made of a range of international case studies. The module 'The Sports Industry' explicitly examines the global business context of sport, while Principles and Practice of Sports Marketing incorporates international sports marketing as a key theme. Students will be given flexibility in assessments to draw on international materials, such as case studies of global and/or non-UK sports brands. Depending on the availability of suitable partners, students may be able to work on live international sports marketing consultancy projects, with either UK or non-UK-based organisations.

The MSc Sports Business Management is designed to enable students to make a significant contribution to the dynamic and complex global sports industry. The course will develop and enhance students’ business management knowledge and skills in areas such as marketing, HRM, finance and enterprise, strategy and economics. It is completely taught within the sport context by staff with sport management and consultancy experience. Graduates of the programme have gone on to work for a range of UK and international sports organisations including: leisure trusts, local authorities, consultancies, commercial sport providers, sports governing bodies and professional sports clubs. This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
The aim of this module is to explore current and future issues around sustainable sport management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing and venue management.

Global Strategic Sports Marketing Management
Many sports brands face domestic markets that are saturated, highly competitive and with little potential to grow sales revenues, a situation that may see them fall behind in the marketplace. Their main opportunity to grow is to target overseas markets in order to attract new customers and develop new revenues streams. Many sports leagues and brands sell the television rights for their marches to media companies in deals worth in excess of £2billion, who in turn sell these rights in as many as 100 different countries.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Globalisation of Sport Management
The rapid growth of the sport industry in recent times has led to a need for sport to be studied in a global context. With globalisation as a key concept to be addressed, this module will emphasise the need for sport to be managed effectively in order for optimal performance to be achieved. It is essential for sport managers to fully apprehend the influence of globalisation on sports and the sport industry through acquiring and applying contemporary business analysis and decision making tools.

Research Methods and Dissertation
The dissertation allows you to design and conduct an independent piece of academic research, providing an opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced scholarship skills. This combined research methods and dissertation module provides subject-specific methods training in preparation for the completion of a dissertation within the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship and leisure management. The research topic that you select must align with the title of the programme on which you are enrolled. The module begins with a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced. This proposal then guides the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000-word research report (dissertation) is produced.

Madrid Experience

During the months of May, June and July, students will enjoy the truly unique opportunity to live and learn in Madrid, Spain’s capital city and home to the 10-time European football champions, Real Madrid. Whilst undertaking a 30 ECTS credit Diploma in Sport Management at the Real Madrid Graduate School – which students would earn in addition to the MSc International Sport Management degree – the invaluable learning enhancement experience is expected to provide a further foundation for employability prospects in the global sport marketplace. With classes taught at the Real Madrid Graduate School’s facilities including the Real Madrid Sports City in the Valdebebas district of Madrid and the famous Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, students will obtain access to leading executives from the football club. Sustainable Stadium and Event Management

Current Themes in Sports Law
Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods
The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

The sports market is a multibillion dollar industry, experiencing rapid expansion in countries such as China, Russia, Brazil and the Middle East, opening many doors to those with a specialized skillset. This is an interdisciplinary program designed to teach management skills, covering areas such as: sports marketing and management, sports advertising, media relations and sponsorship. The industry offers diverse and dynamic opportunities to graduates, ranging from professional sports to managing events and corporate sponsorships.

This programme is designed for people who wish to develop a critical research-based knowledge and expertise of a broad range of key issues in international business and management at postgraduate level while also enabling a focus on specific areas of study according to personal interests or career requirements. These areas include economics and finance, marketing, employment relations and human resource management, business ethics, globalisation and development.

The distinctiveness of this programme draws from the way it presents the multi-disciplinary context of the academic domain of international business and the way it promotes an interdisciplinary connection with cognate fields such as management, business, economics and organisation studies.

The programme has 5 compulsory courses which provide core training in principles of international business and management and research methods. Three optional courses enable a focus on specific areas of international business study. The opportunity to tailor the programme to personal interests and career requirements of students extends to the dissertation which is undertaken on an international business topic. The dissertation also enables the application and further development of a broad range of research-based skills which is emphasised throughout the programme.

The programme facilitates the attainment of a broad range of subject-specific, intellectual, practical and personal and social learning outcomes. Students completing the programme have the knowledge, skills and competencies to analyse critical issues in international business with qualitative and quantitative methods, and to design and implement international business strategy and policy development. It is particularly relevant if you are, or would like to be, a manager with responsibility for international business and policy affairs in a private or public sector organisation.

Based in the School of Business, Economics and Informatics, the Department of Management is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in teaching, research and consultancy in the broad field of management. The integrity of sporting bodies and organisations at every level is being brought into question, creating an urgent need to develop a coherent, professional response to these issues.

Our response is to establish sports ethics and integrity as a new, internationally recognised profession within the field of sports administration and governance in both public and private sectors; to develop 100 new postgraduate experts between 2016-21, selected from around the world who will enrich sport federations with their expertise in ethics and integrity and revolutionise the world of sport. Course description

The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity will equip students for high-level careers in sports administration and governance, with a focus on ethical sports, integrity and compliance. Students will receive training that enables them to identify ethical issues, engage in moral thinking, and translate decisions into moral actions – the three core skills required to develop sports integrity.

The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity will support students in developing an ethical mind-set and transferable skills that are indispensable for addressing the value and integrity issues facing national and international sporting federations, national Olympic Committees, and Paralympic Committees with a focus on:

Columbia University, a world-class Ivy League institution, and Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE), a Madrid-based leader in legal education, offer a companion degree program for individuals with a law background who are interested in a career in international sports.

Intensive study for the two professional degrees — Columbia’s Master of Science (M.S.) in Sports Management and ISDE’s Master in Global Sports Law — is completed on Columbia’s campus in New York City, the sports capital of North America, for 10 months during the fall, spring, and summer terms. The course builds on existing study or industry experience to develop the knowledge and skills required for personal and professional development. Your studies are made up of eight assessed modules, which include an industry-based research project in which you work with sport organisations to develop solutions to problems or explore potential market opportunities. You also have the option to complete a 12 week work placement, where you receive support and advice from a placement mentor. Course structure

Full time – 1 year – two days a week with four taught modules each semester followed by a project.
Part time – typically 2 years – tailored to your needs where possible and normally one day a week.

The course is made up of eight core modules, plus a research or work-based learning project. Modules provide a broad grounding across management disciplines in sport business. Most teaching is in small groups of typically less than 20 people, allowing for close interaction between students and academic staff.

Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course. During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

Assessment: coursework assignments, essays, management projects, problem solving exercises, group work, project, phase tests.

Every day, we receive on average 3,000 advertising messages, of which we will probably only remember four or five. The question is then to know what brands should do to survive in such a hyper-competitive environment, saturated as it is with commercial information.

Communication associated with events can then generate a retention rate then times higher than what traditional advertising methods can achieve. As a result, communication spendings on events account for over 7% of overall communication budgets, a figure that has been growing fast lately.

Located in Paris and given entirely in English, this programme will train you to work in the events industry, whether in the organisation or the promotion of events for the general public or for professionals.

This programme offers:

- Advanced level input by international lecturers (UK, Australia, Italy, ...);
- Field experience thanks to Challenge Projects, Junior Consulting Projects, and in-company work placements;
- Meetings with Events Communication professionals, whether in Paris, or Las Vegas (USA) for seminar abroad.

Professionalisation -

The programme fosters the development of students' competencies and network:

- One 5-week Junior Consulting Project (Pédagogie HEC Entrepreneurs) focused on the organisation or promotion of an event. Students work in teams of 3 or 4 on a real-life issue facing a company, identified and validated by the programme faculty;
- Three 2-week ‘Challenges': groups work on a real-life issue submitted by a company. Projects are Events related in a B2B or B2C context. One Challenge is scheduled right at the start of the programme;
- A Career Path Scheme to help students build their professional projects (personality tests, individual coaching, preparation for recruitment interviews,... );
- Two 1-week seminars in Paris & Las Vegas (USA) comprising professional meetings,
- One work placement/internship from May to December (4 to 6 months).

Course Overview

The MA International Tourism Management programme is available as a full or part time campus based programme as well as a part-time online programme. In part one of the programme students will study a number of modules which will enable them to gain a systematic understanding of the nature and development of tourism and destinations, marketing and management.

Tourism specific modules will initiate discussion about the development of places as sustainable destinations, destination management, place image, socio-cultural, environmental, economic and political impacts of tourism and the potential of sustainable approaches to tourism development.

Additionally, students will also develop an understanding of management principles and marketing applied to the tourism context and will engage in critical thinking about contemporary global issues which form the backdrop to the discipline. In part two of the programme, students can elect to undertake a dissertation, integrated case study or business development proposal. Exit awards also include Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.

PART 1
Within part 1 of the programme students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma or MA must take all compulsory modules and one optional module; students undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate must take three out of the four compulsory modules.

Key Features

The MA International Tourism Management programme combines a theoretical approach with practical skills relevant for the sector and promotes an understanding of key concepts from an applied perspective. Students will study a combination of management, social science and subject specific modules which will engage them in discussion about their discipline set within the wider global context. Graduates from the programmes will have developed transferable employability skills such as research, problem solving, data interpretation and critical thinking as well as gaining the knowledge and practical skills applicable to the sector.

Assessment

Assessment for both online and campus based versions of the programmes employs a variety of coursework formats which engage students in critical thinking about practical issues. In addition to more traditional essays and reports, assessment across the programme also includes presentations, podcasts, online discussion, articles, seminar report, critical discussion, case studies, interview report, portfolio, poster presentation.

Career Opportunities

The MA International Tourism Management programme combines a theoretical approach with practical skills relevant for the sector and promotes an understanding of key concepts from an applied perspective. Graduates from the programme will have developed transferable employability skills such as research, problem solving, data interpretation and critical thinking as well as gaining the knowledge and practical skills applicable to the sector.

Online students, although already in related employment will also enhance their future employability by benefiting from industry based case studies, guest lectures in the form of podcasts and recorded interviews. The online learning environment will also provide significant opportunities for students to share professional best practice and ideas within and across subject domains and cultures.

Previous graduates from UWTSD Tourism Masters programmes have gained positions in organisations such as the National Trust, Museums, National Parks, research and consultancy and Higher Education employment. Graduates from this new suite of programmes are also likely to find employment within PR firms, local authorities, theatres, festivals, hotels, sports venues, corporate events.
