Course detail

This full-time combined-level MSc is developed for qualified and registered healthcare professionals with a Diploma of Higher Education who wish to study for a master’s degree over a 30 month period.

Your first 15 months will be equivalent to a final year of a BSc before progressing to study at master’s level, with a particular focus on the importance of developing a critical understanding of research methodology and comprehensive bioscience principles to enable you to adopt a holistic approach to assessment and care.

You will develop essential theoretical and practical skills concerning healthcare and analyse how social, political and cultural factors have the capacity to both sustain and undermine the delivery of equitable healthcare. You will be required to draw upon your professional, practice and policy guidelines to develop or enhance approaches to healthcare practice.

Following your first year of study, you will be provided with opportunities to develop your professional knowledge, skills and attitudes in selecting, synthesising, analysing and appraising data from a range of sources and for a range of purposes. You will also engage with complex healthcare issues in a global context, where legal and ethical principles are applied and you will be encouraged to be mindful of the fragility of healthcare services and practices.

Opportunities for inter-professional learning are provided on the option units. You will be required to work with near-peers in paired and small group work during scheduled learning, and, in some units, in guided learning activities. The course will prepare you to drive and influence change and development of your healthcare practice.

They are also designed so that you can rehearse ways of thinking and acting that are professionally relevant. Assessment tasks are graduated to provide you with opportunities to develop your academic literacies and enquiry skills over time.

Your assessment is supported in a range of ways including: comprehensive assessment briefs; use of formative assessment techniques (including those embedded within summative assessment tasks); through use of exemplar answers (including those previously submitted by students where possible); through rehearsing approaches to assessment tasks during contact sessions; through scheduled tutorials which focus on academic literacies including literature search, critique and referencing skills.

You will receive feedback on submitted work within 15 working days and can discuss your work in scheduled tutorials and/or office time. You will also have to access to central support services designed to support the development of study skills and academic writing.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Child) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Child) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Child) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Child) is made up of five modules:

Child Nursing graduates care for children and young people in hospitals in their own home, special schools, and children’s centres.

COURSE SUMMARY

This prestigious course is for qualified nurses would want to develop their knowledge and skills in order to advance their careers in the specialism of research, education, practice or international nursing.

The MSc Nursing will empower you to take forward your practice and patient care through critically exploring professional biography, the therapeutic relationship and embedding an evidence based and person centred approach to care. 

By studying modules relevant to contemporary clinical practice, you take control of your personal, professional and academic development whilst engaging in critical debate about the issues at the forefront of nursing practice. You will gain skills in applying new knowledge to your practice and achieve mastery of nursing related to your chosen award. An innovative feature of the International pathway includes a bespoke module of observational clinical experience and simulated practice for international students.

We also offer our MSc Nursing programme as a one year course which is taught on a blended basis, meaning that whilst you study in Salford for semester 1, the remainder of the course is taught via distance learning. See the course page for details.

COURSE DETAILS

There are six pathway options open to you as part of this programme, and your choice might depend on where you see your Masters programme fitting into your career. The modules you select will vary depending on the pathway chosen (see details below).

For the PgCert, you will need to study Critically Exploring Professional Practice and one further optional module and for the PgDip you will need to study Critically Exploring Professional Practice and three further optional modules.

The pathways you can choose to follow are:

MSC NURSING: INTERNATIONAL  

A new and innovative award that is open to both international and UK nurses, who will study together the global context of nursing. The pathway includes an opportunity for international students to undertake some bespoke observational placements in the UK healthcare system, supported by application  of  skills  in  a state-of-the-art high-fidelity clinical simulation suite. 

MSC NURSING: EDUCATION  

This pathway is led and taught by experts in the field. This award allows you to concentrate on teaching and learning in both clinical practice and academic contexts. You will work alongside expert teachers who will support you to develop as a teacher with a thorough understanding of a range of learning and teaching strategies.This option may particularly suit those in new clinical teaching roles, or those seeking a future academic teaching career.  

MSC NURSING: RESEARCH  

Using the evidence-base to improve patient care lies at the heart of this pathway. You will gain advanced knowledge and skills in all aspects of research and have access to international expertise from our research groups.  

MSC NURSING: PRACTICE  

This pathway is open to nurses practicing in the UK only. It allows you to build on your current skills, plan, implement and evaluate patient care at an advanced level within the context of your own workplace. There is an emphasis on combining practical skills with sound theoretical principles.  

MSC NURSING: PRACTICE (NEUROSCIENCE)          

This new pathway aims to equip the qualified nurse with the skills and knowledge to create and implement innovative approaches to neuroscience care delivery.      

MSC NURSING

You can choose to focus on the general award in order to keep your career options open. The MSc Nursing will empower you to develop a mastery of your practice and take forward person centred care. You will have an opportunity to critically examine your practice and services and develop an evidence based  approach to improve patient care. 

TEACHING

A range of teaching strategies are used, including seminars, lectures, action learning, online learning, directed study, practice based assessments and peer supported learning. The MSc Nursing is underpinned by a student centred teaching and learning philosophy.

Part-time students usually study one module per semester; full-time students will undertake two modules per semester. All students must complete 120 level 7 credits before progressing on to the dissertation.

For the two year part-time option, students will study over Semester 3 whereas for the three year option, you will study over Semesters 1 and 2.

ASSESSMENT

A range of formative and summative assessments will cater for your individual learning style. These include:

It gives you the opportunity to explore the character of the contemporary world in an interdisciplinary manner, drawing upon a strong theoretical basis as well as an empirical grounding.

In the Master of Science program (MS), students select one of four functional roles to pursue as a clinical nurse specialist, administrator, educator or nurse practitioner. Dual roles are also available for additional credit.

Professional accreditation

Students successfully completing this course will be eligible for registration by the NMC on the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing part of the register (third part), and for registration as able to prescribe from the community practitioners formulary (V100).

Teaching and learning

The teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the course reflects its interprofessional, client-centred and practice-focused approach. Opportunities for sharing existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience are maximised. Lively debates develop within the sessions and you will be able to discuss relevant issues with others from different primary care trusts and the wider health and care environments. In order to make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group, a variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used. They include seminars, discussions, debates and group work. The Brookes Virtual Learning Environment (an online repository of lectures, handouts, information and learning exercises) will also be used as part of the teaching and learning process. Some modules will have a greater emphasis on E-learning as a primary source of education. Teaching strategies will encourage self-reflection, the integration of theory and practice and interprofessional collaboration.

Practice assessment is a key part of the assessment process throughout the course and many strategies are used to assess your overall practice competence; these are all clearly demonstrated in the course practice assessment document.

Approach to assessment

The course is centred on practice and you will spend 50% of time in the practice environment. Your community practice teachers (CPTs) are highly involved with the development and implementation of the course and there is a great deal of collaboration with the primary care trusts (PCT) education leads. You will be encouraged to critically analyse and evaluate SCPHN practice with your lecturers and CPTs, and your assignments will provide a focus for analysing practice. Your CPT will be responsible for facilitating your learning, supervising your progress and assessing your competence in practice.

Attendance pattern

This course is unique in nature as you will be paid full-time (or part-time) thus your attendance at university is recorded. Sickness and absence during the course will affect your sickness and absence record. Equally punctuality at university is a important part of your professional role.

Research highlights

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, along with research teams from many other UK and international centres.

Our academic staff have extensive experience of NHS and general management at both senior and director level. They also have a significant record of research and publications on the topics of management and leadership. The currency of the course is also assured by the lecturers' close involvement in the health and social care sector and their movement between that sector and education.

We are very pleased with the results received in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). 70% of our research in Allied Health Professions and Studies was rated as being of international significance in the assessment of research, of which 10% was rated as world-leading. The Masters in Nursing (MN) enables you to achieve a post-graduate qualification and professional registration. The MN underpins all aspects of nursing practice and leads to eligibility for registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council professional register in one of the four fields: Adult Health /Child Health /Mental Health /Learning Disability.

It is a full-time, three year, post-graduate degree course which aims to provide you with a range of learning, teaching and assessment experiences that will enable you to become a critically reflective, post-graduate nurse with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of your respective field of nursing.

Throughout this programme you will be in University studying theory (50%) and then have the opportunity to engage in clinical-based learning (50%) in a variety of hospital and community settings within the Lothian and Borders area. Integrated into this programme is the opportunity to engage in voluntary and elective practice placements locally or internationally.

What you'll learn

Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence in nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever changing health care arena.
Our nursing programme has been written to take account of the key drivers in health care at local, national and international levels and was developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

During each year of the programme you will learn alongside colleagues in all fields of nursing, and will work with peers from the MN and the undergraduate nursing programme. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills, knowledge and competences to work within a variety of health-care settings. There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. On completion, this course will support you to become a creative, innovated and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice.

Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.
