The International Master’s in Statistics develops your practical, statistical and computing skills to prepare you for a professional career in statistics or as a solid basis for further research in the area.

Research areas

Biometry and ecological statistics
Specific interests are in biometry, cluster analysis, stochastic population processes, analysis of discrete data, analysis of quantal assay data, overdispersion, and we enjoy good links within the University, including the School of Biosciences and the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. A recent major joint research project involves modelling the behaviour of yeast prions and builds upon previous work in this area. We also work in collaboration with many external institutions.

Bayesian statistics
Current work includes non-parametric Bayes, inference robustness, modelling with non-normal distributions, model uncertainty, variable selection and functional data analysis.
Bioinformatics, statistical genetics and medical statistics
Research covers bioinformatics (eg DNA microarray data), involving collaboration with the School of Biosciences. Other interests include population genetics, clinical trials and survival analysis.

Nonparametric statistics
Research focuses on empirical likelihood, high-dimensional data analysis, nonlinear dynamic analysis, semi-parametric modelling, survival analysis, risk insurance, functional data analysis, spatial data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, feature selection and wavelets.

Careers

Students often go into careers as professional statisticians in industry, government, research and teaching but our programmes also prepare you for careers in other fields requiring a strong statistical background. You have the opportunity to attend careers talks from professional statisticians working in industry and to attend networking meetings with employers.

IMAPA is a 2 year (120 credits) Master's programme in partnership between the University of Leuven (KU Leuven, Belgium), the University of Olomouc (UP, Czech Republic), and a number of associate partners across the world. The programme aims at educating students in both a professional orientation (students can choose between education and active lifestyle), and a disciplinary specialization (students choose between biomechanics & exercise physiology, integrity and (dis)ability in sport and motor control-learning & psychology).

IMAPA aims to provide state-of-the-art research and teaching methodology in adapted physical activity (APA) and the social, pedagogical and technical aspects of physical activity adapted to the needs of persons with a disability. The programme combines the expertise of a number of universities throughout the EU and the world, and offers students comprehensive training and expert knowledge in the many aspects of adapted physical activity.

Each year, international expert academics and professionals are invited to conduct teaching and research assignments. The programme promotes the exchange of ideas between professionals and future practitioners from around the world. International

The first academic year takes place at KU Leuven (Belgium), in the second year the students will follow the first semester at the Palacky University of Olomouc (Czech Republic). Flexible 

IMAPA is a flexible programme, allowing students to custom design the content of their curriculum depending on the competences they wish to acquire. Students can follow the entire programme as KU Leuven students, or fit a number of selected courses within their home university programme, while remaining registered at their home university.

The professional aim of the programme is to educate competent and critical professionals, who are able to design and evaluate adapted physical activity programmes using an evidence-based approach for people with a disability across the life span. Adapted physical activity is a developing field and graduates will be considered as having the key abilities to advance and develop its scope. To address the wide application of the field, IMAPA offers generic tools to use exercise as an intervention, which can be translated into different contexts. To achieve this professional aim, the programme provides specialization options to emphasize the competence to work in educational or active lifestyle settings, catering for students' special professional interest and potential work outflow.

The disciplinary aim of IMAPA is to educate people to conduct research in order to advance the field of APA. In addition, the programme offers scientific discipline specific specialization (Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Motor Control/Learning, Integrity and Dis/ability in Sport). As such, IMAPA provides basic scientific skills that will enable graduates to pursue an academic career or undertake further research or doctoral studies.

Graduates who successfully completed the course will have acquired the scientific knowledge and critical insights to develop and bring the field of adapted physical activity forward in different national settings. Given the wide area of adapted physical activity, as applied in the various countries, graduates will obtain the broad tools to implement and evaluate health, sports and leisure enhancing programs for people with disability.

The most important of these general tools is an evidence-based approach to intervention. Graduates of the IMAPA programme will also have gained sufficient research competence to work in research settings. They will have developed the skills to design innovative research questions in adapted physical activity and to report on scientific findings. Graduates will have gained the analytical ability to highlight the needs of people with a disability in different countries and identify current barriers for implementation of adapted physical activity. Furthermore, they will ensure appropriate intervention programmes and policy statements in the area of exercise and health for people with a disability. Overall, they will have an internationally-oriented spirit and seek out multicultural collaboration. The international master on “Control for Green Mechatronics” (GREEM), within the “Robotics and Control” mention of the French Ministry of Education, promotes a high-quality educational offer in the area of design and control of mechatronic systems with a particular focus on two points: their functional performances and their energetic efficiency. The consideration of the energy efficiency makes the GREEM international master very singular and very innovative and makes it answer a real actual societal matter which is the effect of technological devices to the ecology. After graduation, the students will have mastered the area of green mechatronics where they will be able to design new or re-design existing mechatronic systems, to model and simulate them, to calculate controllers for their automation and their performances improvement, and to setup networks of mechatronic systems, all together with consideration of the energy efficiency. Furthermore, international experience possibility is offered to the students: exchanges with partner universities at the international level are possible with eventual dual-degree, internships at the international level are encouraged, a great part of the courses are given in English, and French language and culture courses are given for non-francophone students.

Site of training

The site of training is Besançon, a French old city that combines old stones buildings, French culture, various activities from sports to cultural, and students life. Approximately 10% of the population are students or interns in Besançon city and in its agglomeration. The center of applied languages (CLA, http://cla.univ-fcomte.fr/) which is a part of the university (UFC/UBFC) is one of the most important center for learning languages in France and hosts approximately 4000 interns per year coming from various countries for some days or for several months. Public transportation is very practical and the old-city is doable by walks.

The applicant should have a level of English and a background on “control systems” following the UFC/UBFC criterias. Additionally to these, the motivations and the professional project of the applicant are also examined carefully.

ORGANIZATION

The international Master in European Project Planning and Management has a total duration of 5 months (800 hours) organized as follows:

- 2 months of classroom based training and project work. The classroom based training has a duration of 8 hour a day, from 9.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. The classroom based course is held in Florence (Italy). The classroom based part of the Master course is held at Pixel, in Florence (Italy).

- 3 months of internship, in public or private organizations. The intern works as an Assistant European project manager. The internship is held in one of the partner organizations based in one of the European Union’s member states.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have 15 to 25 years experience in European project planning, management, assessment and auditing.

Practical simulations are carried out for each topic analyzed. The objective of the practical activities is the simulation of the planning and management of European projects. At the end of the Master, every work group will have produced: a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership, administrative requirements, supporting documents etc.

INTERNSHIP

The Master offers the participants the opportunity to carry out a three month internship abroad in one of the European Union’s countries. The organizations hosting the students for the internship are all actively involved in European projects. Every student carries out the internship with the role of Assistant European Project Manager. The internship therefore gives the participants the opportunity to immediately put into practice the skills acquired through a direct involvement in the management of European projects.

In 2010, the Centre for Actuarial Science, Risk and Investment (CASRI) (http://www.kent.ac.uk/casri/index.html) was set up within SMSAS to reflect the widening scope of the teaching and research of the staff. Areas of research interest include economic capital and risk management for financial services firms, mortality and longevity modelling, longevity indices and markets. Other research topics include genetics and insurance, insurance economics, pensions and corporate reporting.

The UK Actuarial Profession
The UK Actuarial Profession is small, but influential and well rewarded. There are more than 6,500 actuaries currently employed in the UK, the majority of whom work in insurance companies and consultancy practices.

Survey results published by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (http://www.actuaries.org.uk/becoming-actuary/pages/what-can-actuary-earn) suggest that the average basic salary for a student actuary is £36,842 with pay and bonuses increasingly sharply as you become more experienced. The average basic salary of a Chief Actuary is £209,292.

As an actuary, your work is extremely varied and can include: advising companies on the amount of funds to set aside for employee pension payments; designing new insurance policies and setting premium rates; pricing financial derivatives and working in fund management and quantitative investment research; advising life insurance companies on he distribution of surplus funds; and estimating the effects of possible major disasters, such as earthquakes or hurricanes, and setting premium rates for insurance against such disasters. A unique programme

The FIFA Master takes its graduates on a unique journey through three different European countries to study sport. The International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE) is a two-year educational programme in the Erasmus+ framework.

This masters programme is jointly offered by the following three full partner universities:

Additionally, there are three associated partners where students can perform thesis research:

Classes in Edinburgh focus on fire dynamics, fire safety engineering and structural design for fire. Classes in Ghent have a more general fire safety engineering focus. Classes in Lund emphasise enclosure fire dynamics, risk analysis and human behaviour.

Our Building Research Establishment (BRE) Centre for Fire Safety Engineering hosts bespoke equipment to support groundbreaking research and teaching, with combined thermal and mechanical loading and use of the latest image analysis techniques.

The International Master in Anti-Corruption Compliance and Collective Action (IMACC) is the first master’s programme specially designed for anti-corruption compliance and collective action professionals involved with the business sector.
It is a practical, comprehensive answer to the ever-evolving regulatory environment and rising demand for specialized skills.
The two-year programme enables participants to upgrade their expertise and add value to their companies and organizations, while continuing to work, by implementing best practices in anti-corruption and compliance; identifying and mitigating various types of risks
initiating and managing collective action; conducting internal investigations; doing business based on the highest ethical standards.

Structure and Curriculum

IACA’s IMACC is a two-year programme consisting of six modules and a final project or thesis.
Four modules are completed in the first academic year, followed by two modules and the final project or thesis in the second year.
Each module has three phases: pre-module, an in-class session, and post-module (see Module Structure). Intensive in-class phases (either seven or ten days) allow for maximum learning opportunities within a condensed period of time. Classes take place approximately every three months at the IACA campus in Laxenburg, Austria (Vienna area) and, for study visits, possibly other locations worldwide.
The IMACC degree comes with a total of 120 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), enabling enrolment into PhD programmes if desired.
IACA is recognized by the Republic of Austria as an institution of post-secondary education to the effect that IACA’s study programmes and academic degrees are treated equivalent to those of educational institutions accredited in accordance with the EU’s Bologna process.

Choreomundus is an Erasmus Mundus programme that investigates dance and other movement systems (ritual practices, martial arts, games and physical theatre) as intangible cultural heritage. To apply, please visit the website.

The Department is home to the internationally-recognised Centre for Dance Research, which foregrounds the research of dance as cultural and artistic expression beyond, and including, theatre performance. Through seminars, forums and conferences involving staff and international invited guests, the centre supports a compelling research culture.

We also have excellent links with dance companies and creative organisations. In easy reach of London’s vibrant dance scene, the campus has superb studios and a state-of-the-art theatre for dance students.

Content

In the first semester all students start in Norway for an induction and an intensive course. For the rest of the first academic year, they are divided between NTNU Trondheim and UBP Clermont-Ferrand, and then spend their third semester in Hungary, and the fourth and final semester at the University of Roehampton. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a joint Masters degree from all four universities.
