This programme combines a mix of theory and practice in the study of international human resource management (HRM) and prepares students to work as HRM professionals or people managers within global organisations.
By studying this programme students will receive grounding in the field of international HRM with a specific focus on its development into a strategic function within global organisations. As well as developing a comparative awareness of the various elements of HRM practice, notably: training and development; recruitment and selection; and performance management, students will be equipped with a range of analytical, diagnostic and facilitative tools to support their future work in international teams. All students are required to complete a project during the programme but may substitute this with a dissertation, if appropriate.

We give you the opportunity to work with our academics on suitable research projects. This work leads directly to your dissertation, and in suitable cases you may be able to present a paper at a conference or publish your research. If you already have an interest in a particular area of research for your dissertation, we will provide you with the support that could also lead to a conference paper or publication.
Completing a dissertation develops your ability to research new ideas and approaches from a cross cultural perspective. You also develop the skills to formally present your research findings to your fellow students and course tutor.
Previous students have completed research in cross cultural management and expatriate development programmes. They have also worked on projects for their sponsoring company including • the development of under- represented groups in home countries • the relevance of western practices to home country organisations • migrant labour • global reward.
The course includes attendance at a three day residential held outside Sheffield. The residential gives you hands on experience of managing an HR activity in a strategic and international context.

As of September 2013 CIPD and AHRI (Australian Human Resources Institute) have announced mutual recognition of professional membership for individuals holding corresponding professional grades of membership. This means that members joining under counterpart organisation (either the CIPD or the AHRI) will have their existing credentials recognised, providing access to the equivalent grade of professional membership.

For full-time students the Masters programme is ideal as it allows you to complete the requirements of the Institiute for the award of the Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management or Human Resource Development.
If you complete the part-time mode you will also complete the requirements of the Institute for the award of the Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management or Human Resource Development after 2 years of part time study.
Successful completion of the core and the option modules will enable you to become Associate Members of the CIPD with eligibility for upgrading to Chartered Membership.
We have an experienced teaching team who combine real work experience of human resource management with the academic qualifications, bringing a strategic and conceptual view to the topics covered. Sessions are interactive and we invite guest speakers, encourage students to work together on case studies, arrange visits and incorporate role-playing activities to develop practical HR skills.
For full-time students, the course runs over one full year. For part-time students it will run on one afternoon and evening over two years for the PG Diploma HRM / HRD stage, with an additional third year (part-time) for the MA IHRM. For some sessions, full-time and part-time students will be taught together, allowing UK-based and international students the chance to share experiences and bring a global perspective to HR issues.
One of the CIPD core modules requires you to apply the knowledge and skills gained on the course to conduct a piece of research on a ‘live’ HR issues and this further enhances individual skills and enhances employability.
-Our course will be fully approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and is equivalent to the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma which allows you gain associate level membership and eligibility to upgrade to Chartered Membership status on meeting the CIPD requirements.
-The programme allows you to study either on a full-time or part-time basis, so that you can combine work with achieving your qualification
-The course covers the core CIPD modules but allows you also to select modules in specialist areas so you will either focus on HRM or HRD. It also allows you to apply to the CIPD for upgrading to Chartered Member in either discipline.

Each 20-credit module involves 60 hours of learning activities which will include some lectures, seminars, group discussions, research activities and case study work. There will be a good mix of individual tasks and group work to foster learning. In addition to the 60 hours of guided study there is a requirement for self-directed study for all modules.
For the CIPD core modules the assessments include two exams, the compilation of a portfolio to show skills-based learning and a business report covering a piece of relevant research. For the optional and additional modules, assignments will include essays, practical case studies and an open book exam.
The course is designed around the skills and competencies required to become a professional HRM or HRD practitioner. A core module of the course is called Developing Skills for Business Leadership, and covers the skills and competencies specified by the CIPD.
You will be able to participate in practical, work relevant activities such as conducting a negotiation with an employee representative, holding a grievance and disciplinary interview with a member of staff, selection interviews and many more skills-based sessions.
The course is closely tied into the CIPD profession map, which has been developed by consideration of what the leading experts working in HRM and HRD need to know and understand to contribute effectively to the performance of their organisations.
