The MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management is designed to prepare graduates for management and senior management positions in a complex and dynamic industry.

Our curriculum is international in scope and is suitable for UK and international students from a range of disciplines. The programme will help you to develop an ability to think critically about the relationship between tourism and management in different contexts and across a range of functions e.g. marketing, policy, business evaluation, strategy and applied research. Throughout our MSc, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability which positions people and the environment at the centre of tourism development and destinations.
Our dissertation module is the flagship of our programme, where you get to demonstrate and apply all the knowledge and skills you have acquired to study a contemporary tourism management issue of your choice. We encourage students to pick a dissertation subject that not only interests them, but is directly related to the kind of employment they are looking to secure following their graduation. Added to that, you can opt for our Work Based Learning module which allows students to work with a tourism business client in a consultancy role, or you may choose to travel abroad to take advantage of summer school opportunities in Europe and further afield.

This is an exciting Master’s programme designed for those who want to develop a dynamic career in the global hospitality and tourism industry. The course is designed for graduates from hospitality, tourism, business or related disciplines, who wish to build a detailed understanding of international hospitality and tourism management.
Throughout this course you’ll get the opportunity to develop broad industry knowledge, allowing you to make appropriate judgements concerning the strategic and operational challenges faced by international hospitality and tourism businesses. You’ll then be enabled to devise and implement relevant strategies to address these challenges. Two specialist tourism modules – International Tourism and Niche Tourism - enhance your knowledge of tourist destinations and markets. Other modules include Management of International Hospitality Organisations, International Marketing, Hospitality Operational Analysis and Planning, and International Human Resource Management.
The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Extensive use is made of contemporary case studies and, where appropriate, fieldwork visits and guest lectures will take place.
This is a broad course that prepares you for a successful management career in the international hospitality, events and tourism industries. You will be introduced to key concepts, including the psychology of consumer behaviour, how to create a marketing plan, hospitality operations and strategic financial management. You don’t need to have previously studied hospitality, events or tourism management and prior work experience is not required.
After completing your academic studies, you will have the option to undertake a one-year paid work placement as part of the course (sandwich mode). You will be fully supported in finding a placement and supervised throughout.

The innovative learning experience on this course is very much student-centred and interactive. You will take part in multicultural group work, case studies, workshops, seminars, lectures, events and one-to-one tutorials. Alumni and senior industry professionals contribute to the programme through guest lectures. You will have the opportunity to be personally mentored by an industry leader.
The tutors are internationally renowned for their research and consultancy activities, and their excellent links with hotel, tourism and events industries. They bring commercial expertise into the classroom to inform you of contemporary developments taking place in hospitality and tourism industries.
Assessment is based predominantly on individual coursework and the dissertation. There is an examination in the Strategic Financial Management module.
Each year, there is a series of field trips to events such as the World Travel Market and visits to destinations, attractions, hotels, museums and the corporate office of a leading international hotel company.
Field trips are optional and are paid for by the student.
The full-time mode involves approximately 15 hours of contact time per week, but in addition there is a significant amount of independent and group study time. You will therefore be expected to take a great deal of responsibility for your own learning and to manage your time effectively.
