Whether you are interested in traditional sports, emerging sports, e-sports, or marketing through sport, the MSc International Sport Management has been designed to support your academic and vocational development. Staff with significant sport business experience and contacts with industry partners teach the Masters course in a sport department, rather than a business school. What this means is that all of your modules are related to sport and are taught by people who understand the relationship between theory, practice, and industry requirements.

Teaching And Assessment

Modules covered on the course include: The Sport Marketing Process; International Resource Management in Sport; Strategic Management for Sport; International Sport Event Management; and The Research Process.

Our assessments are based on the types of tasks that sports managers are required to perform, such as writing reports, making presentations, evaluating information, financial analysis and developing strategic plans. You will undertake an applied research project to complete your Masters.

Your research skills will be developed via a reflective research portfolio in semester 1. Teaching and learning

Research is fundamental to the International Studies programme and you will be taught by a team of research-active scholars who are all specialists and publish in their areas of expertise. We include aspects of our research in all our courses, teach specialist modules in our areas of expertise and supervise dissertations in our specialist subjects.

Diverse teaching methods are employed including lectures, tutor/group-led seminars, analysis of case studies, group work presentations, individual presentations, and individual and small group tutorials.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is conducted through a variety of assignments linked to the expected learning outcomes. Assignments will include essays, presentations, projects, reports and the dissertation. These will be spread over the year to provide constant feedback and assessment. One of the compulsory modules is also partially assessed by a written exam.

Field trips

You are required to go on a four-day study trip to Brussels and The Hague. The trip takes place just before the start of Semester 2 (in late January) and starts with visits to key institutions of the European Union and NATO. Then its moves to The Hague to visit a range of international organisations, including the International Criminal Court and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which was awarded the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. This study trip provides you with first-hand experience of how these important international institutions work. The cost of the trip is included in the course fees.

Staff involved in teaching on the programme have, in recent years, been awarded a number of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) grants.

Dr Michael Lister co-led a project entitled 'Anti-Terrorism, Citizenship and Security in the UK', which examined the extent to which citizens of the United Kingdom feel that their security has been enhanced (or even diminished) by contemporary anti-terrorism measures.

Findings from Dr Mikko Kuisma’s ESRC-funded research project called 'Welfare State Practices and the Constitution of the Citizen: Nordic Models of Capitalism in an Age of Globalisation' have been published in a number of outlets including Policy Network, a leading international progressive politics think tank.

Dr Stephen Hurt was successful in a bid to the ESRC Research Seminars Competition together with colleagues from the Universities of Birmingham, Sheffield and Warwick, Chatham House and the Institute for Public Policy Research. The focus of the series is British policy to Africa and in particular the legacies of attempts by successive Labour administrations to transform this and the impact more recently of a Conservative-led coalition government operating in a context of financial austerity. The series will conclude with a parliamentary briefing at the House of Commons, hosted by the Africa All Party Parliamentary Group.

Meanwhile, Dr Rico Isaacs has conducted research funded by the British Academy into the effectiveness of Election Observation Missions (EOMs) in ensuring freer and fairer elections in the former Soviet Union. EOMs have been central to the Organisation for Cooperation and Security in Europe’s (OSCE) strategy to promote democracy in former Soviet states.

On the MSc International Management (Human Resource Management) course you will develop an understanding of a range of global businesses, their operations, and the cultural differences you will meet in the practice of international management. You will study the various business functions, such as marketing, finance and strategy, taking into account global environmental factors (economic, political and social) in which international organisations operate. You will also develop a specialism in key areas of Human Resource Management; the business function which many would argue is the most important in the sense that it delivers to the organisation the human resource without which nothing would be achieved.

One of the big differences on this course is the focus on acquiring the skills you will need to work in international organisations. You will learn about a range of international organisations and develop your general management skills and intercultural management skills. You will develop your specific Human Resources Management skills in this same international context. You will gain practical experience by working on a live consultancy project for a commercial or not-for-profit organisation and have the opportunity to take part in field trips to study organisations in other countries.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Accreditation

This course is dual accredited by CMI – a CMI accreditation means you have the option to graduate with your degree and gain a professional CMI qualification (Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership) and there’s no extra study involved. This accreditation is not only a hallmark of excellence, but also provides you with benefits. For example, student members can access online content, networking events, company visits, online seminars and mentoring.

A CMI Induction event will be held so you can find out about the CMI qualification and membership and choose whether you would like to qualify and join. If you do choose to gain the CMI qualification you will need to pay a non-refundable fee for the CMI level 7 qualification in Strategic Management & Leadership, which is currently £265 and includes one-year membership of the CMI.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed using a range of different methods including examinations, assignments, individual or group reports and group presentations. This range of assessments will help you to develop the analytical and presentational that employers within different organisations look for.

International Management in Practice: Study Trip

You can go to Budapest to experience a hands-on week, learning about the processes within international management. Students meet with leaders of global firms and international organisations, receive presentations from global academic experts, and tour facilities. This module is included in your programme fees, but you are responsible for paying for all travel and accommodation costs and some meals. This is a 10-credit module, which will be formally assessed.

International Business in Practice Study Trip

The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

The MSc International Tourism Management course focuses on strategic decision making in relation to tourism operations, tourism marketing and strategic tourism management. The MA/PGDip International Studies and Diplomacy (ISD) programme is designed for those engaged in, or planning to embark upon, a professional career requiring international expertise in government, not-for-profit, corporate or academic environments.

ISD aims to prepare students for a variety of roles, such as working within a Foreign Service or other government department; international civil service (such as the United Nations or European Union); international NGOs (working in fields such as development, humanitarian assistance and conflict resolution); multinational corporations and international media. The programme also suits those engaged in or considering research roles within a policy think tank, risk analysis organisation or doctoral programme and seeking to deepen their academic and practical understanding of international affairs and contemporary diplomatic practice.

The programme has a multi-disciplinary structure and draws on the teaching and research strengths of CISD and of the SOAS departments of International Politics, Law, Economics and area studies (especially of Asia, Africa and the Middle East) as well as a wide range of languages. The programme is convened on a multi-disciplinary basis, and teaching is through lectures, tutorials and workshops conducted by SOAS faculty and visiting specialists.

The Centre endeavours to make as many of the modules for International Studies and Diplomacy (ISD) accessible to part-time students. Where possible the majority of CISD lectures are at 18.00; however, lecture times will be rotated on a yearly basis for some modules (between evening and daytime slots) so that part-time students will have access to as many modules as possible over the duration of their degree. Associated tutorials are repeated in hourly slots with the latest taking place at 20.00. Students sign up for tutorial groups at the start of term and stay in the same group throughout the academic year. There is a minimum of two and a half hours formal teaching a week (lecture and tutorial) for each ISD module taken. Practical exercises may take place at weekends.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

International trade is the exchange of capital, goods and services across international borders. Countries specialise in exporting those products and services which they can produce most efficiently and import those where they are less efficient.

Logistics is about managing the activities along a supply chain, from procuring materials to delivering finished goods that satisfy customer orders. Effective logistics and supply chain management are therefore the key enablers of international trade.

Against a background of intensifying economic, political, cultural and military globalisation, there is now a heightened awareness of terrorism and international crime as threats to global security.

The Terrorism, International Crime and Global Security MA degree identifies the features of these respective threats and explores the challenges to national and global governance, human rights and ethics, criminality and regionalism. This course examines the character of these contemporary global threats, considers specific case studies, and contributes to the debate over how to respond intellectually and in practical policy to these major threats to global security in the post-9/11 world.

The Terrorism, International Crime and Global Security MA degree course is among the first of its kind to offer an integrated approach to studying terrorism, international crime and global security. UK and International Competitive internships will be offered to the most motivated students.

Learning and living Europe: Study in 3 cities! Nice - Canterbury - Berlin

The Master in Advanced European and International Studies - Trilingual studies (MAEIS) provides an overarching and extensive view of the political, social, economic and cultural issues of the global world. The MAEIS is an international, interdisciplinary and itinerant programme which aims to educate the next generation of European decision-makers. Its encompassing teaching method at the crossroads of theory and practice helps the students to gain thorough academic expertise in European affairs as well as a firsthand-insight into the work as a Policy Officer at a European institution or international organisation. With its leitmotiv "Learning and living Europe", the programme follows an original approach that distinguishes it from other Master's courses in European Studies and International Relations: the trilingual studies programme is taught in English, French and German and takes place in three different study locations: Nice, Canterbury and Berlin. At the end of the programme, students can opt to do a professional internship (3 to 6 months).

Nice, France

The programme starts in Nice, France.

The first term encompasses introductory classes to all of the five modules (International Relations, European Integration, Economy and Globalisation, Federalism and Governance, and Professional Skills), completed by international conferences and seminars dealing with current world politics events. This term is concluded by a mid-term exam and a three-day-simulation.

Canterbury, UK

The second term takes place in Canterbury, UK, in co-operation with the University of Kent.

During this term, students choose three courses among the curriculum proposed by the School of Politics and International Relations of the University, in line with their specialisation. At the end of the term, students write an essay for each of the three courses.

A one-week study trip to the European and international organisations in Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg is organised during the second term.

Berlin, Germany

During the third term in Berlin, Germany the programme aims at deepening the students' knowledge of European integration and contemporary problems in international relations, through several thematic workshops.

Our partner in Berlin, the Institut für Europäische Politik provides a dialogue with European integration experts and offers an insight into political life in Berlin. Students have the opportunity to advance in their research work, as they are free of obligations from mid-May to mid-June to work on their thesis. The programme concludes with the defence of the thesis and oral exams. With their graduation, students become part of CIFE’s worldwide Alumni network. The Master programme is credited with 60 ECTS.

Optional Internship

Subsequently, students who have taken this option, will do an internship of three to six months. The internship can be accomplished in a European institution, an international organisation, national diplomacy, consultancies, non-governmental organisations or research institutes. At the end of the internship, students submit a substantial internship report, which is assessed by a board of examiners. Internship and internship report are credited with supplementary 30 ECTS.

Teaching Modules

International Relations

Complex interdependency, dynamic power figurations and imbalances characterise today's world politics, an arena that is influenced by diverse actors in multi-level processes. Since its establishment in the early 20th century, the academic discipline of International Relations (IR) has been shaped by different schools of thought. We will explore the major theories that draft a comprehensive or holistic explanation of international politics, in order both to identify presuppositions in public debates and to apply those theoretical tools to academic analysis.

European Integration

At the beginning of the new millennium, the European Union can look back at considerable achievements such as the completion of the monetary union. On the other hand, the EU remains confronted with greater challenges: new member states need to be fully integrated, the EU institutions must be reformed, a common identity for foreign and security politics must be reinforced, the acceptance of the EU amongst its Member States' populations needs to be strengthened.

Federalism and Governance

For the last fifteen years, federalism has known a revival as an international field of studies. Three major developments can be considered. The first is the study of the EU, not analysed any more as a process of integration but in terms of federal institutional comparative approach. The second development is multi-level governance, that can be conceived as an extension of federalism as it deals with any form of multi-tier institutional system. This cooperative/competitive approach has appeared to understand the institutional consequences of the process of globalisation in post-industrialised societies, and of the subsequent changing of nature of sovereignty in the relevant states. Eventually, federalism has become a tool of conflict resolution.

Economy and Globalisation

This course aims at giving an overview of the forces that drive world trade. International economics analyses the exchanges of goods, services and capitals between countries. It also analyses the conditions under which these exchanges take place. If the rule of free trade appears to have priority, in actuality, many countries resort to protectionism, in spite of WTO rules. Globalisation is at the heart of the concerns (or fears) of various players, such as political leaders, unions, businesses, households, civil society, etc. Are we witnessing the shifting of the world's centre in favour of South and East Asia?

Professional Skills Workshops

This module equips the participants with the professional skills and competences that will enable them to work in the context of the European and international organisations. They will take actively part in several simulation games and follow workshops on project cycle management, intercultural management, as well as on mediation and negotiation.
