The module explores the role of technology and the creative process in the development of brands. Focusing on the emergence and growth of virtual realities and e-communications, students will examine how the creation and delivery of a new brand concept through creative technologies represents a transformational shift in the entrepreneurship, commerce and professional practice of the contemporary marketer.

Fashion Buying, Merchandising and Distribution

This module provides students with a critical understanding of the buying, merchandising and distribution functions within a fashion organisation. The associated management processes are explored in detail, including analysis of market trends, product concept, sourcing, buying, merchandising, logistics and distribution channel decisions.

Personal and Professional Development

Enables you to identify, understand, develop and articulate your personal abilities in the context of your future career aspirations.

Research Methods

Develops your advanced skills related to a range of research methods needed for academic and practical research at a Masters Level.

Dissertation/Project

The final element of the programme is the dissertation, which provides you with an opportunity to design and undertake a piece of original research in a selective area of international fashion marketing. The research project can assume one of three forms: An Applied Research Project, an Inquiry Project or a Business Consultancy Project.

Students are introduced to the concept of customer insight and its role in marketing decision making. A range of models of consumer behaviour, including consumer value, are examined in the context of strategic decision making and relationship building.

Strategic Decisions in the International Fashion Marketplace

Core to organisational success is strategic planning, implementation and evaluation. This module considers the challenges facing organisations in the contemporary marketplace and explores the creation and consideration of solutions that arise from such. Adopting a marketing planning perspective this module will equip students with the necessary tools, skills and insights to generate a comprehensive, cohesive and congruent marketing plan.

The course is organised into three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities, which are based on specialist reading, research and case studies. Modules are assessed through essays, reports, group work, presentations and examinations.

All of our Marketing MSc courses share six core modules. This specialist route includes one subject-specific module (Digital Marketing), but also shares a range of optional modules which enable you to tailor the course to your own interests and career aspirations.

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice, which will require you to make recommendations for real-life marketing practice. The aim of the MA Fashion Studies program is to create polyvalent and critical researchers and professionals able to adapt to the heterogeneity of the fashion industry and its various sectors. In particular, our students develop competencies in fashion communication – from fashion writing and criticism to "image-making"; in trend-forecasting and marketing analysis; in fashion curating; in the research and archival practices connected to private and public museums or/and brand heritage. Students develop awareness of the different realities and constraints of the field of fashion and its commercial aspects, developing a personal and critical view on this creative industry. Possible career paths bring students to work in fashion PR and communication agencies, fashion magazines, fashion consulting, fashion museums and galleries, private archives, auction houses, fashion brands communication and marketing departments, trend-forecasting agencies, and fashion retailing and also to pursue PhD degrees at top universities around the world.

European Hub

Thanks to faculty contacts and the program's strategic geographical position, MA Fashion Studies functions as a European hub, giving students access to other important fashion cities like Milan, London, Antwerp, Berlin, and Stockholm as well as international fashion institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum or the Fashion Museum of Antwerp (MoMu). The program sponsors public events, panels, open lectures and symposia on fashion, inviting established and emerging fashion scholars, curators, and professionals. The Parsons Paris Gallery and workshops with fashion editors, stylists, and photographers stimulates students to publicize their own work while, thanks to its relationship with the New York campus, students also have opportunities to collaborate with overseas MA Fashion Studies peers and spend a semester abroad.

Overview

MA Fashion Marketing and Branding at Winchester School of Art is designed to balance the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to succeed in marketing roles in international based fashion and textile brands.

This MA programme will explore the specific marketing challenges and opportunities that exist within the world of fashion and its supporting textiles industries. The global nature of the Fashion industry, coupled with rapid advances in communication and digital technologies, have changed the nature of how we view the world of fashion and how consumers' tastes develop. In this context, the world of Fashion demands a focused and knowledge based approach to marketing.

You will critically analyse your ideas in relation to contemporary issues and theories of fashion and textile marketing from a local and global perspective. You will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinking and skills required for a successful career in Fashion Marketing and Branding, enabling you to respond positively to the changing demands of clients and consumers.

Our MSc International Luxury Marketing course enables you to learn about planning and applying luxury marketing management strategies within a framework of international marketing. You will approach luxury marketing and its business challenges from a very international perspective.

The course integrates academic and practical knowledge with practical case studies and live scenarios and you learn to assess situations from financial, commercial and cultural standpoints, to reach decisions on solutions and actions. If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. With specialist modules in luxury businesses you develop marketing strategies in a luxury context and develop and understand how building customer trust and champion luxury brands is critical. You will gain the insights and critical skills to make decisions about the operational and strategic business activities of luxury brands and their distribution channels in a range of international business environments.

Graduates will be well placed to be employed in marketing roles throughout the world in luxury sectors such as jewellery, fashion, tourism, fine wine, spirits and prestige cars. These positions are not confined to in-house marketing management, but also can be in media, digital, brand and communications agencies, in particular those specialising in the luxury marketplace.

Course content

Compulsory Modules

You will study eight compulsory modules and a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. In addition, you will choose two optional modules and you can complete either a dissertation or client project or, if you start the course in September, you also have the opportunity to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role. If you choose not to take a work placement, the course lasts 12 months. If you start in September and take the work placement the course last 17 months.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

We're investing over £30m to create a modern teaching and learning facilities and creating a new home at Headington for the Oxford Brookes Business School.

Set to be complete in 2017, you'll see:

  • 30 teaching rooms and a collaborative lecture theatre
  • a new Main Hall with soundproof wall, perfect for teaching and events like graduations
  • social learning spaces and a cafe
  • a new gateway into the Headington Campus.

Our library provides specialist business resources (both hard copy and via online access) to UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, a wide range of constantly updated key texts, and postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses.

Teaching Location

If you are starting your course in September 2017 you are likely to experience all your teaching at the Headington Campus.

Field trips

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.
