Our MSc in International Event Management requires an open, critical and inquiring mindset for the social-scientific and applied study of events and management. You will be expected to critically evaluate existing knowledge in the field of event management, debate key issues such as sustainability, ethical event production, or legacy planning, and consider strategic responses to forces impacting on events from the global operating environment.

This is an academic course with a high degree of vocational relevance. The content and delivery of the course is strongly underpinned by the course team's expertise, research activities and in many cases first hand experience of the industry. Industry expertise and application is drawn from areas as diverse as festivals, business events, marketing, consultancy, sport and leisure, all of which enrich the design and delivery of the course.

Course structure

Full-time students attend workshops on two days per week with the part-time route usually requiring one day per week. Teaching methods include group work, case studies, presentations, and live projects. The course is delivered through a variety of approaches including lectures, presentations, tutorials and case studies, with an emphasis on interactive learning.

Areas of study

Adopting a social scientific approach to the analysis of the international event industry, specialist subjects include international event strategy analysis and development, critical issues surrounding risk in modern societies, event project management and international event marketing, sponsorship and fundraising. Conceptual analysis is applied through use of a variety of case studies from mega sport and cultural events to more localized cultural, business or charity events.

Is your career aspiration to be a manager and business specialist within the international events industry? If so, this course aims to provide you with a specialist education in the management of international events to enable you achieve your aim. This programme will build on your existing knowledge and experience.

A key strength of the MSc is that it is modular in structure and delivered in blended learning mode with all modules being taught in 3 day intensive blocks. The block delivered modules are supported with online discussion groups and three learning set days per module.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

A range of teaching and assessment methods will be employed to develop learning through block delivery with the use of Blackboard Learn for dissemination of teaching and learning materials. As a student you will benefit first-hand from the research we undertake. Staff engage in research and consultancy activities within the event and tourism sector. In addition students will benefit from talks from industry leaders and working with live event projects. Methods of assessment will be both formative and summative. Methods include; short synopsis, reviews and peer reviews, case studies and business reports, computer modelling, individual and group presentations. No modules will involve formal examinations as a means of assessment.

This qualification offers a world of opportunities in terms of career options in one of the world’s fastest growing sectors. Event organisers are responsible for the production of events from conception through to completion. Events can include: exhibitions and fairs; promotions and product launches; fundraising and social events.

The event industry is composed of a diverse range of work in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors and a management career can found within event management companies, in-house for an organisation or freelance.

Event organisers must be able to complete a wide range of activities such as researching markets to identify opportunities for events; consulting and liaising with clients, producing detailed proposals for events (e.g. timelines, venues, suppliers, legal obligations, staffing and budgets) to ensuring compliance with insurance, legal, health and safety obligations.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. At the same time by way of elective modules the programme permits students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

Where appropriate it is international in scope and coverage. The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities.

During the course, students will also study standard trade terms, major international trade conventions, the sale, transport and regulation of goods, customs regulations, services and capital in the EU and beyond, e-commerce, electronic contracts, and computer crime.

Practice-based case studies give students the opportunity to apply newly acquired skills to the real world. A work-based project, either with a current employer or under placement, also provides first-hand experience of the field of international trade. The University can help finding placements, which could mean working with employers such as Medicom Healthcare, Lawdit Solicitors and other similar organisations.

Previous students have benefitted from a programme of guest lectures from speakers including commercial solicitors, managing partners, police officers, trading standards officers, barristers and members of the judiciary.

Course Content

LLM International Trade Regulation comprises five core units, including a work-based project which accounts for a third of the course.

Law and Regulation of International Business Organisations: This unit focuses on the functioning and types of business organisations typical across the world, and their legal regulation. Subjects include corporate social responsibility, the Law of Corporations, shareholder rights and the duties of directors.

International Commercial Enforcement and Dispute Resolution: This unit is primarily concerned with mechanisms of obtaining redress in international commercial disputes. It focuses on what is traditionally called ‘private international law’ or ‘conflict of laws’ but it develops further to cover areas such as arbitration and arbitration agreements.

Creativity and Regulation in the Global Digital Environment: This unit focuses on issues relating to the protection of creative endeavour in the digital environment, covering intellectual property rights, domain names, licensing, digital rights management and encryption, data protection and information privacy. You will also have a chance to build practical skills in the valuation of intellectual property and due diligence processes.

The International Market in Goods and Services: This unit focuses on the specifics of international trade, covering standard trade terms, major international trade conventions, the sale, transport and regulation of goods, and customs regulations. You will also study services and capital in the EU, e-commerce, electronic contracts and computer crime.

Work-Based Project: The work-based project provides an exciting opportunity to put your newly-learned knowledge to a practical purpose for either a current employer or as part of a short-term placement. Collaborative learning

Course content

Semester 1
The MSc in International Management & Law begins with an introduction to the Management Development Programme. During this introduction, it's impressed on you that you're responsible for developing both your knowledge and skills and that you should approach your studies as active learners. This introduction is complemented by an Integrated Skills Workshop which focuses on your personal approach to learning and managing themselves.

The core Law class in the first semester is the Law of International Business. It introduces you to the concepts underpinning the regulation of businesses. It will explain the different types of business entities and introduce you to company and corporate law concepts.

In this semester the core International Management class is Managing Across Cultures. This class will help you develop an awareness, knowledge and understanding of the importance of the often overlooked 'soft skills' of management, particularly as concerns cross-cultural variations and their impact on the practices and processes of management. It'll examine the main concepts currently employed to understand the complexity presented to managers in their process of managing people across national and cultural borders, addressing the issues of the impact of culture on management structures and processes. It will then provide understanding of the role which cross-cultural management can play in achieving competitive advantage in international business.

Semester 2
The programme then leads into two core classes. The first is in International Management, namely Global Business Environment. This class is designed to inspire you with the platform of knowledge and understanding on the economic, institutional and socio-cultural contexts which form the background to International Management.

The core Law class is Comparative Law of Obligations. This will consider obligations law in the context of different constitutional arrangements around the world. It will include material on delict/torts, contract and restitution in countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, the EU, the USA and China and also some material on the law of obligations in the Islamic tradition.

Upon completion of the compulsory classes and towards the end of the taught programme, you choose elective classes, allowing you to explore a range of topics. Students enrolled on the MSc in International Management & Law will be able to choose classes from a shared pool of international, general management and law topics available.

Semester 3
The project class rounds off the programme in the third and final semester. This provides you with an opportunity to explore at length and in depth some aspects of theory or methods, knowledge or skills introduced on the taught element of the programme. The project is supported by a class in project methodology. At this stage of the programme you may be interested in aligning career aspirations with project work.

Learning & teaching

Modes of learning include lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, expert guest lecturers, self-study exercises, project work, and individual study and research. Individual class specifications detail the objectives, learning outcomes and content for each core module of the programme, with a breakdown of teaching methods and forms of assessments used.

There's a strong theme throughout the core classes of ongoing transferable skills development, including team-work, problem-solving, data handling and analytical skills, evaluation skills and written and oral communication. Particularly, the consulting in practice class provides you with professional, highly-transferable skills including leadership, project management, decision-making and negotiation.

Assessment

All core classes in the programme include coursework as an element of final assessment. Other methods of assessment are also used, appropriate to the focus of the class, including group and individual project work, presentations and online assessed exercises. Relative weighting of coursework and other assessment methods vary from class to class.

The dissertation or project will be assessed by in-depth project evaluation reports, supervisor feedback reports and a critical reflection of professional and personal skills.

For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day a week basis and complete the taught element in two years. Students who complete the taught element of the degree, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in International Hospitality and Event Management. Students wishing to complete the MSc in International Hospitality and Event Management must complete the research element, which comprises of a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

Overview

Our PG Dip International Trade and Commercial Law course* offers an advanced qualification that is designed to build on your knowledge from the PG Cert programme modules and also introduce legal research skills and methods, international carriage of goods, private international law, intellectual property law and international commercial dispute resolution.

Law is a widely recognised and highly respected subject and the knowledge gained on our PG Dip International Trade and Commercial Law will open up many opportunities for you to develop your career a high-level career in an international law firm, multinational company or governmental organisation.

* The start date of this course is still subject to University approval. In the event that approval is not granted by your course start date, an alternative date will be offered or a full refund given.

Course structure

The PG Dip International Trade and Commercial Law is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 120 credits.

Level 7 modules:

Law of the World Trade Organisation (20 credits)
International Competition Law (20 credits)
International Sales of Goods (20 credits)
Legal Research Skills and Methods (20 credits)*

Learning and assessment

Introduction

Studying online gives you the freedom to study when and where it suits you – at home, during your lunch hour or anywhere else you have internet access.

All of our online courses have an indicative study duration which is a guide to how long your course will take to complete. The actual duration may be longer or shorter depending on your speed of study, study options chosen and module availability. It’s possible to complete your studies faster than the indicative course duration by doubling up on modules at certain times; however, minimum study durations do apply.

All of our courses have regular start dates throughout the year. Our academic year is organised into modules, typically with a one- or two-week break between modules and a structured three-week break for the Christmas period. Students will receive a course timetable during the application process.

Teaching methods and style

As we are a 100% online university, we utilise a Virtual Learning Environment instead of a traditional campus. The system tracks and manages the learning process in real-time and provides you with immediate access to your learning materials.

This learning platform allows both students and tutors to actively take part in real-time conversations and you can listen to, and view, live lectures and seminars over the internet. All courses are delivered in English only.

You are supported throughout your course by a dedicated Student Adviser and have the opportunity to regularly interact with fellow students and your tutor. To ensure you receive the support you need from your tutor, we cap our class sizes at 20 students.

Assessment

We adopt an assignment-based approach to assessment instead of exams. Assessment for the PG Dip International Trade and Commercial Law will be based on a combination of written coursework.

You will always be aware of your current provisional grade right from the start of the programme, allowing you to evaluate the success of your current study methods and clearly identify areas to improve. We believe that this transparency gives you the information you need to make the most of your course. We achieve this by:

· showing your marks clearly in your gradebook, which can be viewed whenever you log onto the learning platform;

· the rapid turnaround of work assessed to ensure that your gradebook is always up to date;

· assessing your work throughout the module rather than waiting for end of year exams;

· ensuring you have regular contact with your Student Adviser; and

· the simplicity and transparency in the design of our assessment criteria.

We also have a policy of ensuring that work submitted by students is authentic. As well as the fact that all work is frequently assessed, we use a well established electronic monitoring system to check for plagiarism.

Career prospects

We are dedicated to improving employability amongst our graduates. Our online courses give you the opportunity to improve your career prospects and earning potential with a mix of key skills that are directly transferable to the workplace.

The legal knowledge gained from the PG Dip International Trade and Commercial Law could prepare you for a role in an international law firm, multinational company or governmental organisation.

FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM

A ‘tailor-designing’ approach towards education is at the core of how we design programs at HEC Paris. > What courses you take during the first semester depends on what you have done before joining HEC Paris. BALANCE BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE

The reason why we feel it is important to complement theoretical teaching by top researchers with practitioners lectures is that we have learned it is giving our graduates a small "extra edge" compared to graduates of other institutions. The more competitive the environment you are in, the more important having this extra edge is.

STRONG AND COHESIVE PEER GROUP

Who your peers are matters: for the quality of your learning experience, for the perception by potential employers and for the value of your network after you graduate. This is why academic performance is at the top of our admission criteria. But academic performance is not enough: smart, ambitious individuals will underperform if they do not cooperate. Business Life Capstone Event
As part of their Business Planning module, postgraduate business students were invited to collaborate with Brunel’s annual Made in Brunel exhibition to provide a route to market for real creative and entrepreneurial products conceived by Brunel’s engineering and design students. Students from MSc Management and MSc Marketing not only created commercialisation plans for the products, but were invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of industry professionals and academic judges.

BAT (Bloomberg Aptitude Test) with Bloomberg
The BAT is offered as a three-hour online test taken on campus within an invigilated environment with a Bloomberg representative. BAT was designed in conjunction with leading financial institutions and academics to uncover an individual’s knowledge and skills relevant for a financial career. Students can choose to submit their names along with test scores or anonymously during job recruitment drives.
