- Acquire a specific knowledge and the understanding needed to work in HRM in an international context and to contribute to its development

The mission of the MSc International Human Resource Management and Organizational Development is to build the abilities and skills necessary for future managers to recruit, manage and enhance talent while facilitating change in multicultural and international environments. The program provides an understanding of the approach to handling international human resource management operations and the differences in international and domestic HRM.

Through a blending of theory and practice, using case studies and applied learning, students will develop the competencies to understand the HR issues facing business today and positively impact organizational structure and dynamics.

The MSc International Human Resource Management and Organizational Development focuses on the human resource and organizational issues facing companies that operate in the global market. It aims to train managers able to contribute to corporate performance and social responsibility through the effective management of the company's most valuable asset: its men and women.

"The MSc in International Human Resource Management and Organizational Development combines theoretical knowledge with a strong technical and practical orientation to enable students to master key operational know-how and soft skills. Students will be able to apply this knowledge to decision-making in HR and organizational development within different geographical contexts. The program has an international focus, as an ever-increasing globalization of business impacts HRM.

Program delivery relies on a mixture of pedagogical methods and techniques from traditional to interactive lectures, e-learning activities, readings, exercises, case studies, presentations, simulations, individual and multicultural team-based work.

Students will also experiment a course based on a new pedagogy: serious games.

The Final Management Project - a supervised research paper of 20,000 words - allows students to become experts in an HR-related topic of their choice covering not only technical concepts, but also professional practices and implications."

The program explores how HR strategy fits into overall corporate strategy, the key differences between International Human Resource Management (IHRM) and domestic HRM, and the skills required to recruit, manage and enhance talent. 5) Research Methodology and Final Management Project Workshop

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

In addition to the core courses, students can attend personal and professional development workshops. These workshops cover current topics of interest, recent trends in management and career development. They serve as a complement to the core modules.

COMPANY ANALYSIS AND PROFILE

Students will select a company with international business located in different national culture. The purpose is to evaluate the impact of organization design on human resources roles and responsibilities. The objective is to gather public and internal information to develop their own analysis of the situation.

The program encourages effective teamwork as the major part of modules expects students to work in groups. These groups will consist of students of different nationalities and rhythms, as some students attend courses part-time.

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND PROJECT PROPOSAL

A research techniques module has been created to provide the skills required to effectively work on the Final Management Projects and on future professional projects.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project, a written work of approximately 20,000 words, conducted under the supervision of a tutor from GGSB. Students will choose an aspect of International HR Management and are encouraged to link the chosen subject matter to their future career. The project can be completed in parallel with full-time employment or an internship based in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Operating in an international environment requires foreign language fluency and therefore a foreign language module is an option on the program for all students.

Non-French speakers may study French (beginner to advanced level). This option is highly advised for those who are looking to become professionals in France. French speakers may choose from a number of other languages at beginner level.

Careers

Graduates of this MSc program will be qualified for posts in both multinational corporations and companies experiencing rapid expansion in international markets.

Graduates may equally enter the consulting field in the areas of HR and organizational development.

This degree is at the cutting edge of development theory, policy and management. It provides students with the critical and analytical skills to enable them to operate effectively in international development environments. Covering macro and micro level perspectives, the course offers rich insights into the challenges of contemporary development theory, policy and management. The course is structured around the compulsory core modules of International Development Theory and International Development Policy, with flexibility built in through the optional course units chosen by students to meet their own objectives and interests.

The objectives of the course are to provide an integrated, cross-disciplinary framework for the postgraduate study of development. The unifying focus of the course is the analysis of strategies for overcoming poverty. Students will gain knowledge of different development paradigms and an awareness of their evolution. Students are encouraged to develop comparative perspectives (between different regions/countries, disciplinary approaches, schools of thought) and through individual study, seminars and written assignments to develop their knowledge and critical and analytical skills in this field.

Teaching And Assessment

This course examines a wide range of subjects such as conflict and security, civil society and non-government organisations (NGOs), the impacts of China and India’s rising economic power, gender, the environment and resource conflicts, advocacy and citizenship.

Our MSc in International Management is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months. The dissertation gives you an opportunity to undertake a substantive piece of independent research that matches your own academic interests. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to the practical problems and issues of a company, and it will allow you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams and working individually.

In Semester 1 you will study four compulsory units and one optional unit. The compulsory units are:

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track. Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

BMT Hi-Q Sigma to present Case Week Project

BMT Hi-Q Sigma, a Management Consultancy providing advice and insight across Government, Defence, Energy and Transport industries, will present a business problem to practice track students as part of Case Week in June.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with presentations to BMT Hi-Q Sigma.

A student enterprise suite (opened by Swansea Alumnus Sir Terry Matthews in 2013): The School of Management is one of the few UK universities which gives students access to a dedicated entrepreneurship start-up suite. We offer a range of business support facilities such as business mentoring for start-ups and an active entrepreneurship society. We also provide a range of physical facilities for students including a hot-desking suite for student start-ups, print copy facilities, 3-D printing for rapid prototyping and a range of meeting or production spaces.

A financial trading and simulation room: In summer 2013 the School of Management opened a new trading and simulation room. This facility includes state-of-the-art computing facilities and is designed to support simulation activities – both within the financial sector such as investment and trading as well as a range of business topics such as supply chain management, decision analysis and operations management. We are one of a select few schools in the UK to offer a dedicated trading and simulation suite to our students. The suite is home to our investment society and is backed by global trading and investment company OSTC.

Expanded student social space: We provide a Junior Common Room (JCR) for all our undergraduate and postgraduate students to meet, relax and socialise. We also provide several group work rooms with presentation facilities for students to come together on group projects and practice team working or presentation skills.

This course will give you a firm understanding of development theory in an international context, with a particular focus on how to bring theory into practice and build your practical expertise in range of development disciplines.

The course aims to enhance your capacity to critically evaluate economic, political and social factors that are affecting the development policy environment, on a national and international level. Throughout this Master’s degree, you will develop management techniques and skills, and the ability to apply them in a development context.

Through empirical research and analysis, you will have the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in a particular aspect of development management.

The course is designed to prepare you for a career in development management with an international organisation, a non-governmental body or a government development agency. Our graduates are NGO programme officers, trade advisors, project managers, micro finance specialists and development consultants. Some of our graduates have also set up their own development charities or proceeded to PhD research and teaching.

Our regular contributors to teaching and learning activities include experienced field practitioners drawn from international development organisations and NGOs.

Active and enquiry-led learning is a central learning method on the course. Learning is based studying on real-world case studies with official project materials and survey data from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and other development agencies.

Accredited internship

All students on our full-time business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme Reflective Practitioner Module. This is an 8 week unpaid accredited internship, which can be taken in addition to option modules and will help students to gain invaluable work experience. The internships, which are with London-based organisations, take place during the summer period. To apply, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV to the Business Experience Team; the team then shortlist from the applications and conduct group meetings with the applicants.

Ultimately it is up to our internship employers to decide whether they would like to interview the candidate(s) and offer him/her an internship. We have received very positive feedback from both postgraduate students and employers and expect that the internship programme will continue to remain popular amongst our students.

Associated careers

Course structure

The International Business and Economic Development MSc can be studied over one year full-time or two years part-time and is divided into two stages: eight taught modules (seven of which are compulsory) and a dissertation on either International Business or Economic Development.

All of our MSc programmes require some mathematical analysis, and we recognise that students have widely differing backgrounds in mathematics. The first week of all our MSc programmes includes compulsory intensive teaching in mathematics, refreshing and improving your skills in order to equip you with the techniques you will need for the rest of the programme.

Students who successfully pass the taught element of the programme, proceed to the dissertation stage, where you undertake a supervised project of your choice on a Business or Economic Development issue. Advice on choice of dissertation topic and management is given during the taught stage of the programme. The dissertation stage develops students’ research skills and follows on from the Research Methods module. Student dissertations are supervised by academic staff.

Assessment

Assessment is based on a combination of coursework assignments, projects, presentations, reports and written examinations (in May). The programme is completed by a research-based dissertation of 12,000 words on an approved topic between May and September.

What you’ll study

Semester 1
You’ll begin with an introduction to the Professional Management Practice programme. Running throughout the first two semesters, this class offers a combination of workshops and learning exercises. You’ll have the opportunity to identify and develop the soft skills needed as a future international manager or leader.

You’re required to complete a practically-oriented project. This gives you an opportunity to explore, at length, some aspects of theory or methods, or knowledge or skills introduced on the taught element of the programme. You can focus on either International Management or Law. The project is supported by a class in project methodology.

Work placement

This course includes a number of elective classes for you to choose from. If you're interested in studying abroad, the Managing in Europe elective class provides the opportunity to do this with classes taught at Toulouse Business School, France.

Collaborative learning

The MSc in International Management & Law is designed to be a collaborative learning experience. It's a partnership between academic staff and students, and between students from different cultural backgrounds. Working together allows those involved to build upon their collective understanding in interrogating, at an advanced level, the global issues impacting organisations.

Course content

Semester 1
The MSc in International Management & Law begins with an introduction to the Management Development Programme. During this introduction, it's impressed on you that you're responsible for developing both your knowledge and skills and that you should approach your studies as active learners. This introduction is complemented by an Integrated Skills Workshop which focuses on your personal approach to learning and managing themselves.

The core Law class in the first semester is the Law of International Business. It introduces you to the concepts underpinning the regulation of businesses. It will explain the different types of business entities and introduce you to company and corporate law concepts.

In this semester the core International Management class is Managing Across Cultures. This class will help you develop an awareness, knowledge and understanding of the importance of the often overlooked 'soft skills' of management, particularly as concerns cross-cultural variations and their impact on the practices and processes of management. It'll examine the main concepts currently employed to understand the complexity presented to managers in their process of managing people across national and cultural borders, addressing the issues of the impact of culture on management structures and processes. It will then provide understanding of the role which cross-cultural management can play in achieving competitive advantage in international business.

Semester 2
The programme then leads into two core classes. The first is in International Management, namely Global Business Environment. This class is designed to inspire you with the platform of knowledge and understanding on the economic, institutional and socio-cultural contexts which form the background to International Management.

The core Law class is Comparative Law of Obligations. This will consider obligations law in the context of different constitutional arrangements around the world. It will include material on delict/torts, contract and restitution in countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, the EU, the USA and China and also some material on the law of obligations in the Islamic tradition.

Upon completion of the compulsory classes and towards the end of the taught programme, you choose elective classes, allowing you to explore a range of topics. Students enrolled on the MSc in International Management & Law will be able to choose classes from a shared pool of international, general management and law topics available.

Semester 3
The project class rounds off the programme in the third and final semester. This provides you with an opportunity to explore at length and in depth some aspects of theory or methods, knowledge or skills introduced on the taught element of the programme. The project is supported by a class in project methodology. At this stage of the programme you may be interested in aligning career aspirations with project work.

Learning & teaching

Modes of learning include lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, expert guest lecturers, self-study exercises, project work, and individual study and research. Individual class specifications detail the objectives, learning outcomes and content for each core module of the programme, with a breakdown of teaching methods and forms of assessments used.

There's a strong theme throughout the core classes of ongoing transferable skills development, including team-work, problem-solving, data handling and analytical skills, evaluation skills and written and oral communication. Particularly, the consulting in practice class provides you with professional, highly-transferable skills including leadership, project management, decision-making and negotiation.

Assessment

All core classes in the programme include coursework as an element of final assessment. Other methods of assessment are also used, appropriate to the focus of the class, including group and individual project work, presentations and online assessed exercises. Relative weighting of coursework and other assessment methods vary from class to class.

The dissertation or project will be assessed by in-depth project evaluation reports, supervisor feedback reports and a critical reflection of professional and personal skills.

A student enterprise suite (opened by Swansea Alumnus Sir Terry Matthews in 2013): The School of Management is one of the few UK universities which gives students access to a dedicated entrepreneurship start-up suite. We offer a range of business support facilities such as business mentoring for start-ups and an active entrepreneurship society. We also provide a range of physical facilities for students including a hot-desking suite for student start-ups, print copy facilities, 3-D printing for rapid prototyping and a range of meeting or production spaces.

A financial trading and simulation room: In summer 2013 the School of Management opened a new trading and simulation room. This facility includes state-of-the-art computing facilities and is designed to support simulation activities – both within the financial sector such as investment and trading as well as a range of business topics such as supply chain management, decision analysis and operations management. We are one of a select few schools in the UK to offer a dedicated trading and simulation suite to our students. The suite is home to our investment society and is backed by global trading and investment company OSTC.

Expanded student social space: We provide a Junior Common Room (JCR) for all our undergraduate and postgraduate students to meet, relax and socialise. We also provide several group work rooms with presentation facilities for students to come together on group projects and practice team working or presentation skills.

What will you study?

This course strengthens your critical understanding of general management, international business and strategy. As an International Business Management MSc student, you will develop your ability to question and critically assess business issues to find innovative options and solutions. You will build your understanding across a broad range of modules, with a core legal element built in through the International Business Environment and Trade module. Regular guest speakers add to the expertise of our lecturing staff and provide their perspectives on current events.

Assessment

Individual and group coursework, time-constrained coursework and consultancy report, with occasional examination.

Course structure

The International Business Management MSc is made up of eight modules worth 180 credits. Four of these modules, making up 120 credits, are core to the programme and provide you with the knowledge and skills you need for a career in international management. You will also choose from a broad range of elective modules to build on this core for the remaining 60 credits.

Your choice of elective modules means you will have the opportunity to gain expertise in individual business disciplines without limiting your employment options. If you start the course in September, you can choose one of three different pathways – Entrepreneurship, Project Management or Marketing.

If your first degree is in business management, you may be able to obtain an exemption from the core module Fundamentals of Business Management and replace this with additional elective credits. The exemption is subject to approval and further details can be obtained from the Course Director.
