It is particularly suitable for those who seek to develop an academic career in research. It is also suitable for those seeking a professional career in this area, or for those already established in such a career who wish to extend their skill set and familiarise themselves with the latest themes of research in the areas of international accounting and finance.

The core of the programme is the stream on international accounting which consists of three subjects taken over semesters 1 and 2. These seek to provide students with an international perspective to the study of accounting so that they can develop an understanding of the reasons for national differences; the tendencies towards harmonisation; and the problems of multinational companies. This is done within the context of supporting classes on accounting theory and research methodology.

The course provides theoretical training in the major areas of international accounting including Corporate Finance, Theory, Standards, and Managerial Accounting. Students can also take optional modules in other key finance subjects such as financial markets or financial reporting.

Semester 1 modules are examined in December while modules taught in semester 2 are examined by the end of April/early May. At this point, students will be directed, by their supervisor, to begin the dissertation phase of the degree (although they will be encouraged to begin thinking about their research topics in Semester 2).

The dissertation should take students around four months to complete with final drafts being submitted in late August/September.

The increasing influence of international financial reporting standards and the shortage in some countries of international accounting expertise have led to significant demand for relevant education. Delivery and assessment

Successful completion of the taught modules leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. The Master’s degree is awarded on satisfactory completion of a dissertation following the Diploma examinations. Dissertation topics range over all areas of relevance to accounting and finance and allow completion of a case study or research topic dissertation.

The MSc in International Accounting & Finance course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, focused on:

• an introduction to careers in finance and the opportunity to speak to representatives from over 75 companies during a number of different industry specific fairs.

• a refresher course of basic financial mathematics, statistics, computing and electronic databases.

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:

• eight core courses (15 credits each)
and
• five electives (10 credits each)
or
• three electives (10 credits each) and an Applied Research Project (20 credits)
or
• one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in International Accounting & Finance, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

The Accounting, Finance and Economics Research Group at Royal Holloway has an established and growing reputation. This new programme combines key international, business-focused accounting courses, with courses which examine the economic issues involved in environmental economic development.

It will provide students with a critical understanding of the principal theories and concepts related to accounting and environmental economics and detailed knowledge of one or more specialisms related to these subjects.
