This course is for experienced internal communication practitioners or PR professionals who want to develop their strategic internal  communication and management skills. It provides those working in internal communications with a platform for continuous development.

On this course, you will take an in-depth look at the role that internal communication plays in organisations and in particular those going through change. You will develop your ability to use research to inform effective internal communication strategies and develop successful plans. The course focuses on core topics such as: internal communication; audit; change management theory; using research to inform and help develop internal communication strategies; moving from one-way communications to engagement; psychology of communication and the role of technology.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Twenty hours of on campus teaching comprises a variety of approaches including lectures, workshops, group work and input from senior practitioners and QMU academics. Work is set and contact maintained between teaching blocks through online discussions.

CIPR Internal Communication Diploma students learn alongside other CIPR and MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations students ensuring that you benefit from sharing experiences and develop a network of colleagues. As civil society's importance grows globally, understanding its dynamics is increasingly central for anyone who wishes to intervene on its terrain.

The optional development communications track within the Master of Arts in Global Communications (MAGC) explores how civil society actors use communication to achieve their goals. A cutting edge curriculum offers a combination of practical branding, PR, production, and social media courses complemented by crucial theoretical and analytical courses treating actual cases.

Theoretical foundation for broad understanding

This track is designed for both professionals seeking broader academic training and new students seeking a range of specific training and broad understanding. Students study specific issues of global civil society relating to broad categories of freedom and expression, advocacy, governance, and the rule of law. The theoretical part of this degree examines issues of power, political and institutional agency, discourse, and mediated communication. Current trends in governance, non-state and civil society organization will be studied.

Hands-on training for practical application

In addition to equipping students with new or expanded communications skills, the hands-on practical courses and modules enable students to think critically, on the basis of case studies, about interaction between the State, private business, and the third sector. Themes studied include both internal and external communication in organizations.

Practica have been run outside France in Morocco and India. Students will gain insight into communication between NGO members, within the NGO world and civil society, between NGOs, donors and governments, and between NGOs and the corporate world.

Core modules will introduce you to a range of analytical methods, ensuring you develop a solid foundation in the essential skills for consumer analytics and marketing strategy.

You’ll learn how to analyse geographic data using GIS software and understand the application of this in retail modelling, to evaluate new markets and locations. You’ll study predictive analytics, big data and consumer analytics, business analytics and decision science, and learn how to communicate results through data visualisations.

Alongside this, you’ll learn how to deploy data to inform decisions about marketing strategy. Marketing modules include marketing strategy, consumer behavior and direct, digital and interactive marketing. You’ll also deliver your own data-driven marketing research project for a company.

Optional modules allow you to further your knowledge in a related area of interest, either corporate social responsibility, internal communications and managing change, or applied population and demographic analysis.

Mass Communications at LJMU’s School of Humanities and Social Science considers issues of communicative power in a range of contexts to highlight their historical development and explore their continued relevance within a contemporary digital media environment.

An integral part of this MA programme is the year-long Research Methods module. This module introduces you to important methodological approaches pertinent to the study of mass communications and provides you with a grounding in key skills required for study at masters level.

In addition you will study Theories, Concepts and Debates in Mass Communications which looks at enduring issues such as the impact of mass media (within advertising, radio, print propaganda and TV broadcasting) on audiences.

The production and reception of contemporary mass communications is also explored in depth during the Digital Cultures module in which you will critically analyse research on digital media audiences, paying attention to research on web-based communication and the activities of fans. This module also features a distinctive collaborative project involving Tate Liverpool. Staff teaching on the modules will be drawing synergies between various Media subjects. There will also be a focus on current media practice and the technologies of convergence exploring the impact of digital environments on the communications industries.

The course aims to develop professional and academic skills in the area of Journalism and Media Communications. Therefore, the programme will explore how to make communication more effective in professional settings by looking at magazine journalism and its associated business models, internal and external corporate communications, the impact of technology on the communications industries, and developing an understanding of ethical responsibilities and current legislation for media professionals. In this new world, social media, public relations and magazine stories rub shoulders, complement and indeed, often deliberately, inspire each other. This calls for a new breed of communications professional - the 'multi-skilled practitioner'. This new paradigm focuses on how best to create content and increasingly involves engaging audiences and media practitioners in dialogue. In this contemporary media environment social media, PR and magazine journalism are increasingly overlapping and this MA programme aims to address these synergies.

The Mass Media Communications group is made up of academics who have professional experience of print, web design, journalism and PR and this will lend the programme a currency and employability edge that will attract students. In addition, the MA will seek professional recognition with the Periodicals Training Council (PTC), the lead body for best practice in training and development and people management for the magazine and business media industry.

Work Placement

Students completing the course will be awarded a University of Stirling’s MSc in Media and Communications Management degree (180 Scottish Qualifications Framework points [SCQF]). Internationally oriented and comparative in approach, the learning outcomes include:

The Media and Communications Management course includes six face-to-face and two online courses, plus a dissertation of 12,000 words at the end of the coursework period.
