The postgraduate course raises awareness of theories of communication, culture, language and society and their applications in business interactions. The distinctiveness of the programme lies in the focus of the course’s three principal components: emphasis on intercultural and communication theories applied to work-related contexts in International Business; multi-disciplinary pathways; and Research Training.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

You will receive input from a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops. A student-centred approach is emphasised in the teaching and learning process.

Economic globalisation and rapid developments in ICT mean that many organisations now operate on an international scale, or at the very least interact with consumers, clients and/or partner organisations in other countries. Even ‘local’ companies and organisations may have a multicultural workforce, or offer their services or products abroad. As a result, communication has become increasingly international and intercultural.

Organisations seek to create communication strategies that support their overall strategy and objectives. In doing so, they need to interact with stakeholders who may have a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. These stakeholders may include employees, customers, suppliers, financial backers or even local governments. In the Master’s specialisation in International Business Communication, you’ll learn about the all factors, including cultural and linguistic ones, that play a role in communication and need to be taken into account in order to create effective communication strategies.

Learn to communicate effectively in an intercultural workplace. Advance your knowledge of language and cultural theory, as well as your business and professional communication skills, in a community of students from all over the world. You’ll even have the chance to spend a semester on a European campus.

Course duration: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time (September starts); 16 months full-time or 33 months part-time (January starts).

Overview

In our increasingly global world, contact between cultures is of vital economic and sociocultural importance. Our Master’s course will give you the skills and knowledge to build a successful career in an intercultural environment.

You’ll gain an understanding of how cultural differences impact on human interaction in both the workplace and society. With modules that focus on topics like migration, identity and cultural relations, you’ll advance your theoretical knowledge at the same time as improving your business and professional communication skills.

You’ll also learn to use different methodological tools that will help you understand language and communication, as well as sharpen your analytical skills. This will give you the confidence to think independently and innovatively around the interdisciplinary, and often multinational, challenges of the modern world of work.

As a full-time student, you can choose to spend one semester at a European university (the Eurocampus). At the Eurocampus, your studies will be equivalent to those of Cambridge-based students, and you’ll still work in English.

On both our Cambridge campus and the Eurocampus, you’ll be working alongside students from all over the world, including the USA, Canada, Germany, France, China, Japan, Taiwan, Spain, Italy, Finland, Turkey and Lithuania. This will give you additional experience and understanding of intercultural environments to support your academic studies.

Careers

Our MA Intercultural Communication will prepare you for many different roles with international companies, local government and European institutions. Past graduates now enjoy careers in intercultural training (e.g. for Communicaid), work with Non-Governmental Organisations such as UNESCO and UNICEF, intercultural mediation in educational or social contexts, language teaching, translation/interpretation services, international property sales and business, education or embassy administration.

One of our recent students, Stephen Trinder, began an assistant professorship position teaching English at Silla University, South Korea immediately after graduating. In 2014, he was appointed to a lectureship position at The Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, heading their Intercultural Studies course. Stephen is now continuing to study for his PhD with us.

After you graduate, you might also decide to move on to a research degree, such as ourPhD English Language and Intercultural Communication.

Our course gives you the option to spend one semester at a European university, or study in Cambridge only.

On the Cambridge-only route, you’ll show your progress through written coursework: 6,000-word essays for all modules except Impacts of Migration, which requires a 5,000-word essay and a presentation. You'll also complete a 15,000-word dissertation.

On the 'Eurocampus' route, you’ll be assessed through a combination of methods depending on the institution.

Awards and distinctions

By taking this course, you’ll be studying on a programme that has twice been awarded the UK Trade and Investment National Languages for Export award (for the Eastern region in the UK), in the category 'Innovative courses in adult, further and higher education which prepare students for working in, or with, people from non-English-speaking markets'.

Study abroad options

The Eurocampus takes place every year during the September semester at one of the following institutions: Universität Bayreuth, Germany; Anglia Ruskin University, UK; University of Jyväskylä, Finland; Universidade Aberta, Portugal; Università della Svizzera Italiana, Switzerland; Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, France; University of Tartu, Estonia; University of Utrecht, Netherlands.

The Eurocampus location for the next two years will be:

The Eurocampus placement must be full-time, but the Cambridge deliver can still be taken part-time.

The deadline for Eurocampus applications is 1 April for September starters. There is no deadline for January starters, as the Eurocampus placement will begin the following September.

International Business at Winchester is a pre-experience course designed to offer you a broad management education, particularly if you have not previously studied business at undergraduate level, but are interested in developing a career in management. The knowledge and skills you develop on the programme are also of value if you have some previous business experience and are looking to advance your career further.

Built around Winchester Business School’s commitment to the United Nations’ Principles of Responsible Management Education, the course explores themes of the international business environment. You develop as a manager capable of responding positively to global challenges in the twenty-first century.

Individually and in groups, you consider a range of management problems and issues from different perspectives, taught through a variety of methods specifically designed to stimulate and stretch your intellect. You develop your capacity to apply the necessary skills to solve real-life problems in management, and increase your awareness of the need to generate sustainable value for your organisation and for society at large.

MA Communication and Applied Linguistics balances theory and practice and features units that have a high degree of professional relevance and training.

The course is structured on the basis of core units and optional units.

Core:

Theory and Practice of Communication: This unit deals examines communication theory and practice in a range of contexts. Students will use various analytical tools to examine different areas of communication (e.g. corporate communication, mass communication and semiotics. Through engaging with this unit, students can gain a practical understanding of communication which they can apply to their professional lives.

Analysing Discourse: This unit introduces various analytical tools (e.g. appraisal, speech acts, modality, metaphors, transitivity, cohesion, theme-rheme) which are valuable in the analysis of authentic discourses and texts (e.g. courtroom discourse, social media, educational science texts, newspaper texts, political speeches, advertisements, etc.). The importance of context in any analysis is emphasised.

Dissertation: Students undertake a piece of significant research, reported and analysed in an appropriate manner in an area of professional relevance. A research proposal will be produced in the first instance and supervision from a tutor will be available throughout the process.

2 options:

Technical Communication: This unit is designed to develop students’ ability to communicate technical information effectively to specific audiences. It will examine a range of factors that can influence the effectiveness of communication and provide strategies to overcome communication problems.

Intercultural Communication: This unit deals with intercultural communication issues in a global setting. Students can benefit from an awareness of the various factors including cultural factors, which influence communication in order to improve their own knowledge and practice of communication.

Communication in the Workplace: This unit examines how language is used in workplace settings. Analysing and evaluating a range of spoken, written and digital texts, can help students to reflect on and improve their own knowledge and practice of communication.

Digital Communication and Media Development: This unit is designed to give students a theoretical and a practical knowledge of digital media development and implementation. Students will use a range of software applications to design or develop their own digital marketing applications.

Second Language Acquisition: This unit reviews relevant research on the topic of SLA and builds on students’ previous experience of language learning, applying this to areas such as individual differences and types of learning, as well as to more formal approaches to SLA.

Professional Portfolio: This unit offers students the opportunity to profile their degree to their own professional and/or personal interests, allowing students the chance to study areas not covered elsewhere in the curriculum. Students negotiate an area for study and then pursue this with the support of a supervisor.

Exit levels

The credit system creates a flexible framework in which you can graduate with one of the following awards, depending on the number of credits gained:

MA Communication and Applied Linguistics (four core units plus the research management and dissertation units) 180 credits
Postgraduate Diploma in Communication and Applied Linguistics: 120 credits
Postgraduate Certificate in Communication and Applied Linguistics: 60 credits

Programme Assessment

Full time study is one full academic year, consisting of a taught part from October to June and a research part, in which the dissertation is written, from June to September. Part time students study for a period of two years. The dissertation is written in the summer period of the second year of study.

There are no formal examinations. A variety of different assessment methods are used which include essays, projects, portfolios, presentations and your dissertation. The research management unit will prepare you for your dissertation and you will be allocated a dissertation supervisor who will oversee your work throughout the process.
